Iraqi women ask for tougher sentences for Islamic honor murderers

This AP story presents honor killing as a "tribal" phenomenon, and never mentions Islam. It's funny how Islamic apologists boast about how Islam covers every aspect of human life, and then, when confronted with unpleasant aspects of it, claim they're "cultural" and have nothing to do with Islam, as if Islam has not penetrated every aspect of Middle Eastern culture. Until the Islamic component of honor killings is addressed, such killings will continue, because even those who strike out against them are not addressing their root cause.

A manual of Islamic law certified as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy by Al-Azhar University, the most respected authority in Sunni Islam, says that "retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being purely intentionally and without right." However, "not subject to retaliation" is "a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring's offspring." ('Umdat al-Salik o1.1-2). In other words, someone who kills his child incurs no legal penalty under Islamic law.

"'Honor killings' require tougher laws, say Iraqi women," by Yara Bayoumy and Aseel Kami for Reuters, February 6 (thanks to Block Ness):

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Near the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, a father doused his three teenage daughters with boiling water and shot them because, he told a court, he suspected they were having sex. Two died.

He said he killed them to defend his honor.

Murder in Iraq can carry a death sentence but under laws that activists say are far too lenient for so-called "honor killings," the father was jailed for just two years. Medical examinations showed the girls were virgins.

The light sentence was a result of Article 409 of Iraq's penal code which is often used in cases of "honor killings" by men. Women's activists in Iraq, led by the only woman in Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's cabinet, Minister of State for Women's Affairs Ibtihal al-Zaidi, are lobbying to change the law.

But they say they face entrenched tribal values in a country where parliament includes many men from conservative parties.

Funny how other Muslim countries have the same "tribal values," even without the same tribes. Syria in 2009 scrapped a law limiting the length of sentences for honor killings, but "the new law says a man can still benefit from extenuating circumstances in crimes of passion or honour 'provided he serves a prison term of no less than two years in the case of killing.'" And in 2003 the Jordanian Parliament voted down on Islamic grounds a provision designed to stiffen penalties for honor killings. Al-Jazeera reported that "Islamists and conservatives said the laws violated religious traditions and would destroy families and values."

For decades Iraqi women have enjoyed more freedoms than women in many other countries in the Middle East. They are generally free from the strict enforcement of dress codes or restrictions on movement, and can join political life.

But conservative tribal norms still prevail and all too often girls or women are punished by relatives for what are perceived to be crimes of honor.

Memo to AP: "conservatives" do not murder their daughters for honor.

Such cases can be difficult to document. An Iraqi Human Rights ministry report said 249 women were murdered in 2010, including for reasons of "honor crimes," without giving a breakdown. Amnesty International cites the ministry as saying at least 84 women were killed in Iraq in honor killings in 2009.

Article 409 reduces a murder sentence to a maximum of three years if a man "surprises his wife or one of his female dependents (who is) in a state of adultery or finds her in bed with a partner and kills her immediately, or kills one of them."

Families can cover up the crimes and courts may turn a blind eye. Political party allies among the authorities can help provide false testimony or witnesses.

"One reason the numbers of honor killings aren't known is because when they're presented to court, they are presented as suicides," Surood Ahmed, from the Kirkuk office of Iraq's al-Amal Association for Women, told Reuters.

"The police are lenient with the perpetrator because they say 'we're sons of the society', so we can't be tough on him."...

Zaidi said she wants to change Iraqi law to provide equal sentences for male and female perpetrators, without the special exemption for male killers provided under article 409.

She recounted the story of a 12-year-old Iraqi girl who killed her father after she saw him committing adultery. She was sentenced to 15 years in jail.

"If a man saw one of his female dependents committing adultery, how would he be punished? Six months and he'll get out," said Zaidi, who wears a headscarf.

"A woman, even a 12-year-old, got 15 years in jail for an act she committed out of fear and horror of what she saw.

"Definitely, we have brought up this issue and we asked 'where is the fairness and justice?'. Here the sentence for a woman differs from a man's. Fairness and equality is required in this issue," Zaidi told Reuters in an interview Sunday.

Zaidi said she was planning to present a recommendation to the cabinet to modify Article 409 to require the same sentence for male and female killers. But she believes any proposed changes to the law are likely to provoke a "strong reaction."

"At the end of the day, we are a Middle Eastern culture where tribal norms dictate affairs," said Zaidi, an Arabic linguist and independent member of Maliki's ruling coalition.

"We will require some time before these recommendations turn into law ... there needs to be social awareness about this issue."...

good luck on that one.

"...[the father] suspected they were having sex. Two died."

::

Medical examinations showed the girls were virgins.

Well, I'm happy to hear that was taken care of! SICK, SICK, SICK!

Islam - Where the burden of proof of innocence lays solely with the dead.

Ancillary facets to Muslim honor killings...

1) Muslims will often attempt to mitigate the barbarity of stoning sentences for adulteresses by claiming, accurately as it is, that lapidation is an exceedingly rare punishment in the Islamic world. What they don't tell you is the reason for this is that most families spare themselves the public spectacle and humiliation by taking matters into their own hands and honor-killing the suspected offender.

2) For every honor killing in the Muslim realm, there are hundreds of thousands of women who live in abject fear of their husbands, brothers and/or fathers, living servile, assertive-less lives in order just to survive.

This is the reality that Western feminists never broach as they offer up their Muslim sisters as sacrificial lambs on the alter of political correctness.

Hi Boneshack! ...hey how are you? I was thinking about you today with all the tornado activity in your neck of the woods. Please stay safe, dear friend :)

As much as musliods walk around with erections and have sex on their minds constantly, I'm surprised there are any virgins at all left in the middle east.

Thanks, my friend! I've been well, but busy moving the troops around the globe.

Those storms were, indeed, a little too close for comfort!

Alas, we patriots here in the 479xx will fight to the death to prevent this sh*t from ever occurring here. Mark my words.

Take care!

"he suspected they were having sex"

Or was papa mad they were not having sex with him?

Islam provides the value system which regards premarital sex as a grave sin, worthy of harsh punishment. The Quran states that the punishment for fornication is 100 lashes, delivered without mercy, and the Hadith adds, on top of that, banishment for one year. The Quran says do not kill someone, except for a "just cause," or for "spreading mischief." Because premarital sex is considered a great wrong and is illegal in Islam, Islamic law allows for reduced or waived punishment for a parent who kills his or her children who commit such sin-crimes. Islamic law incorporates notions of honour.

In addition to these factors, almost any un-Islamic behaviour by a Muslim can be regarded as apostasy, and, once again, Islamic law (including in Iraq) demands death for apostasy, and, once again, parents may avoid punishment or receive reduced punishment if their kill a teenage child who was deemed to have committed apostasy.

Ultimately, though, the problem is with the beliefs, goals, values, and, most importantly, behaviours of Muslims. The idea that the beliefs properly regarded as within a religion are only those explicitly stated in the core religious texts is simplistic and unrealistic. (Moreover, those in the West who leap to the defense of Islam every time an honor killing occurs are often the same people who blame Christianity for all kinds of actions carried out by Christians which aren't explicitly prescribed or allowed in the Bible). There simply isn't any religion in existence that is merely a list of explicit commands and rules found in its primary scriptures (e.g., Quran and Hadith). The ensuing discussions about whether a practice is "really" Islamic, or the extent to which it is Islamic, often seem to give insufficient attention to the main point: The problem is with Muslims who support honour killings and with those who condone the killings through passive conformity. Most honour killings are carried out and condoned by Muslims, and they are doing this on the basis of their beliefs and values, which are heavily influenced by Islam.

As for this supposed dichotomy between Islam and Arab tribalism -- the entire structure of shari'ah is based on Arab tribal mores. Islam does not reject the values of the society from which it sprang; except for the polytheism and the practice of burying newborn girls alive. Indeed, it freezes them for all time

So it won't do to say that this particular act is fueled by tribalism and not Islam; they're one and the same

I've always found it ironic that Muslims make a great song and dance about Isalm ending pre-Islamic Arab female infanticide: because it seems that within dar al Islam, anytime from about age 8 on up, a female may be killed out of hand by just about any male - whether a stranger or a kinsman - on the basis of mere malicious rumour, suspicion, and the overheated and distinctly unhealthy - even incestuous - prurient imaginings of her male kin.

She does not have to have done **anything**. She may have been as grovellingly submissive, worn the slave-rag obediently (right up to and including total covering), never gone outside without a male 'owner' in attendance...and she can *still* be murdered on the basis of the suspicion - or the fabricated, malicious accusation - of having committed zina. No matter HOW Islamically 'good' she is...she can *still* be killed.

Every woman in dar al Islam lives under a temporarily suspended death sentence that may be randomly activated at any moment, anytime one of the males around her - already programmed, violently, from infancy, to hate and fear and despise everything female, decides he would like to kill a woman.

It is not for nothing that one of the characters in Ayaan Hirsi Ali's scathing little film, 'Submission', is a girl who has been gotten pregnant after being incestuously abused **by her uncle**. She expects to be 'honor' murdered once the pregnancy becomes known. Ayaan, to create the film, drew on her cumulative experience of life inside the Ummah, including the various things she had witnessed when working as an interpreter with the Dutch social services.

In Israel an Arab Muslim mother murdered her *daughter* (note well: it is not always the men who commit these murders; women do them as well, or assist in them). The girl's 'crime' was to have been raped and impregnated by...her **brothers**. Of course mama would not dream of punishing her dear spoiled brat sons. It was all her daughter's fault...

Islam, the vampire. They like the blood of virgins, too!

I resent Reuters reporting that the girls were still virgins. The mere act of including that detail implies that if they had NOT been virgins, their murders would have been somewhat deserved or at least with mitigating circumstances.

It IS pertinent to report that the Iraqis performed a ghoulish virginity test on burned cadavers, and probably on the third surviving daughter, fighting for her life in Intensive Care.

Oops. Not burned cadadavers; scalded and bullet ridden cadavers. But virginal.

My heart is so heavy to think of all the suffering. Not only can a girl child be killed if one of her male relatives *suspects* she is misbehaving, but she can be sexually exploited from infancy if her parents arrange a marriage to an adult male. After all, she is tilth and male mohammedans have a right to plow that field, even without actual penetration.

How mohammedism damages the minds of so many people. Male and female.

One of the political reasons the U.S. supported Saddam Hussein was that we thought he was "secular" and would not commit jihad against the U.S., at least overtly. Part of that farce was Saddam's throwing bones to Western media by "allowing" women in Iraq to be seen as more liberated than other Muslim women. It was all a rouse, but the media is still being manipulated to fool and appease Western sensibilities regarding Islamic jihad.

If MuhamMADians had not stopped .female infantacide' there would not any litle girls for them.

an old article, in which Jamie Glazov interviews the author of a book called 'the Red Zone'.

The author, Stephen Vincent, does not fully understand what he has seen - he does not recognise that what he saw in the 'red zone', in Islamic Iraq, was nothing more than Islam, Islam, Islam on-the-ground - but his testimony, his accounts of *what* he saw, is still telling.

I think the average educated jihadwatcher will take more from his account than he himself was capable of doing with it.

In The Red Zone
By Jamie Glazov
FrontPageMagazine.com | Thursday, December 09, 2004

Excerpt, to show you what I mean:

"FP: One dark phenomenon you encountered in Iraq was the barbaric treatment of women by a culture controlled by tribal Islam {sic: I would say, 'Islam', or 'classical mainline Islam' - dda]. Tell us a bit about the suffering of women that you witnessed.

'Vincent: My experiences in Iraq, together with what I witnessed in Iran in 2000, led me to wonder why the civilized world doesn’t rise up en masse and say Enough! We will no longer tolerate the way that Muslim nations in the Middle East treat women! Alas, in today’s multicultural world, such outrage is impossible.

'Meanwhile, in Iraq the compass of women’s lives—their legal and social rights, hopes and dreams and image of themselves—slowly constricts. Criminals prey on females, forcing them to remain indoors after dark.

' Islamic clerics pressure them to don black abiyas—even when the heat tops 140 degrees [fahrenheit - dda].

'Tribal leaders and Shia imams agitate for shari’a—misogynistic Islamic law—to regulate every aspect of a woman’s existence.

'Polygamy, honor killings, divorce by repudiation, temporary marriages (essentially religiously-sanctioned adultery) have returned, at least as matters of serious discussion {note: all of these practices are bog-standard Islam and have been practised all over dar al Islam throughout all of its history - dda].

'What I learned from Nour [his 'native guide' - dda] —and what I discuss in much of In the Red Zone--is the psychic claustrophobia of Iraqi society.

'Reputation and virginity are everything—should a woman lose the first, she is ostracized from “good” society; lose the second before marriage and she risks being murdered by her “shamed” family.

"**On the street, in restaurants, taxi cabs, mosques, and public place, men (and women) stare at females, waiting—hoping—they will do something that will disgrace themselves and fuel invidious gossip.** {my emphasis - dda: and note that such invidious gossip can and does **get women KILLED** ]

“The relationships between Iraqi men and women [that is, between Iraqi MUSLIM men and women; I doubt things are half as bad within the Christian community, and I very much doubt it was the case among Iraqi Jews, or among the Mandaeans - dda] are sadomasochistic,” Nour told me. From what I saw, she is right."

Let's rephrase that:

"The relationships between Muslim men and Muslim women are sadomasochistic".

Or, to put it crudely, one might argue with some truth that the whole of dar al Islam resembles nothing so much as a giant S & M brothel - the highly illegal kind, run and frequented by psychopathic serial killers. A giant S & M brothel in which underage children may be used and abused even unto death, in which a large percentage of the 'stable' are abducted slaves, and out of which issues a neverending stream of dead bodies, especially the dead bodies of children (prepubescent and barely-pubescent boys and girls) and women.

No surprise that the Muslim war on women is heating up in Iraq as the Americans and coalition forces—who offered some vague brake on the barbarities of Islam—prepare to leave.

Also no surprise, Muslims are also targeting gay people there. This, from Care2:

New Wave of Violence Against Iraqi LGBTs?

by Steve Williams
March 6, 2012

Reports suggest that a new wave of violence against Iraq’s LGBT population may have begun, with some sources claiming that more than 40 people may have been kidnapped, tortured or murdered because they are suspected of being gay.

Reports the IGLHRC:

The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission has today received reports from Iraq of a wave of targeted killings of individuals who are perceived to be gay or lesbian. According to Iraqi human rights activists, in early February 2012, an unidentified group posted death threats against “the adulterous individuals” in the predominantly Shiite neighborhoods of Baghdad and Basra. The threats gave the individuals, whose names and ages were listed, four days to stop their behavior or else face the wrath of God, and were to be carried out by the Mujahedin. According to sources inside Iraq, as the result of this new surge of anti-gay violence close to 40 people have been kidnapped, brutally tortured and murdered. The Iraqi authorities have neither responded to this targeted violence nor have they publicly denounced it. It is widely believed that these atrocities are being committed by a group of the Shiite militia.

More details have surfaced via the Organisation of Women’s Freedom in Iraq:

New barbaric attacks started against the Iraqi lgbt in many cities like Baghdad and Basra while using inhumane methods such as hitting the head and body parts of gay victims with building concrete blocks repeatedly till death or by pushing them over high building roof which took place in Basra city. The actions of killings, torture, and dismembering against those who were described as “adulterous” by Islamic Shia militias, besides hanging lists on the walls of several sections in Al-Sadr city and in Al- Habibea region, had all terrorized the society at large and especially the Iraqi lgbt community, knowing that those attacks are directed against anyone suspected with gay practices or appearance.

The first killings took place on the sixth of February 2012 and continued or rather escalated till the current days. One of the hanged lists in Al-Sadr city included the names and addresses of 33 person, while other lists included other tens of names in other areas. News confirmed that 42 gay men were tortured and killed so far, mostly by concrete blocks, while some by dismembering.
