Raymond Ibrahim: Saudi Grand Mufti Calls for "Destruction of All Churches in Region"

According to several Arabic news sources, last Monday, Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah, the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, declared that it is “necessary to destroy all the churches of the region.”

The Grand Mufti made his assertion in response to a question posed by a delegation from Kuwait, regarding the position of a Kuwaiti parliament member who recently called for the "removal" of churches (he later “clarified” by saying he merely meant that no churches should be built in Kuwait). The Kuwaiti delegation wanted to confirm Sharia’s position on churches.

Accordingly, the Grand Mufti “stressed that Kuwait was a part of the Arabian Peninsula, and therefore it is necessary to destroy all churches in it.”

As with many grand muftis before him, the Sheikh based his proclamation on the famous tradition, or hadith, wherein the prophet of Islam declared on his deathbed that “There are not to be two religions in the [Arabian] Peninsula,” which has always been interpreted to mean that only Islam can be practiced in the region.

While the facts of this account speak for themselves, consider further:

Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah is not just some random Muslim hating on churches. He is the Grand Mufti of the nation that brought Islam to the world. Moreover, he is the President of the Supreme Council of Ulema [Islamic scholars] and Chairman of the Standing Committee for Scientific Research and Issuing of Fatwas. Accordingly, when it comes to what Islam teaches, his words are immensely authoritative.

Considering the hysteria that besets the West whenever non-authoritative individuals offend Islam—for instance, a fringe, unknown pastor—imagine what would happen if a Christian counterpart to the Grand Mufti, say the Pope, were to declare that all mosques in Italy must be destroyed; imagine the nonstop Western media frenzy that would erupt, all the shrill screams of "intolerance" and "bigot," demands for apologies if not resignation, nonstop handwringing by sensitive politicians, and worse.

Yet the Grand Mufti—the highest Islamic law authority of our "friend-and-ally" Saudi Arabia—gets a free pass when he incites Muslims to destroy churches, not that any extra incitement is needed (nary a month goes by without several churches being bombed and destroyed throughout the Islamic world). In fact, at the time of this writing, I have not seen this story, already some three days old, translated on any English news source, though "newsworthy" stories are often translated in mere hours.

Likewise, consider the significance of the Grand Mufti's rationale for destroying churches: it is simply based on a hadith. But when non-Muslims evoke hadiths—this one or the countless others that incite violence and intolerance against the "infidel"—they are accused of being "Islamophobes," of intentionally slandering and misrepresenting Islam, of being obstacles on the road to "dialogue," and so forth.

Which leads to perhaps the most important point: Islam's teachings are so easily ascertained; there is no mystery in determining what is "right" and "wrong" in Islam. The Grand Mufti based his fatwa on a canonical hadith, which Muslims and (informed) non-Muslims know is part of Islam's sources of jurisprudence (or usul al-fiqh). And yet the West—with all its institutions of higher learning, including governmental agencies dealing with cultural and religious questions—is still thoroughly "confused" as to what Islam teaches.

All of this is nothing short of a scandal—a reminder of just how deep the mainstream media, academia, and most politicians have their collective heads thrust in the sand.

Meanwhile, here is the latest piece of evidence of just how bad churches have it in the Muslim world, for those who care to know.

Does anyone know if this is true:

http://cj.myfreeforum.org/about2961.html

8 killed in a coach crash in a tunnel in Switzerland. It appears the bus travelled along the right hand wall of the tunnel and collided head-on with the concrete wall.
24 children were injured in the crash near the border with Italy.
Some of the injured were flown by helicopters to hospitals.
Both of the drivers were among those killed.
The bus was one of 3 hired by a Christian group. The other two reached Belgium safely.
200 people and eight helicopters were involved in the rescue operation.
The two-lane tunnel was not busy with traffic when the accident happened and driving conditions were normal.

My thoughts - This was murder. The driver was Muslim. They wont tell us that.

is it true for real that the driver was a muslim?
M

I don't know - I just read it on the linked site. It would certainly fit their actions in Belgium.

Chris,

it is pure speculation with no evidence at all. Judging by the photos it was an accident waiting to happen, a lane ending at a concrete wall.

Killing and destroying are a very high priority among devout Mohammedans while loving and preserving are major priorities among devout Christians. This is part of the reason why I am so tired of those non-religious moral equivalency thinkers out there who chastise all religions approximately equally. Such folks are tedious, morally blind and counter-productive. They are in no way enlightened. Bill Maher could be Exhibit Number One here.

From the article:

"..the Grand Mufti “stressed that Kuwait was a part of the Arabian Peninsula, and therefore it is necessary to destroy all churches in it.”

Question:

what area of the world, precisely, is normally defined by *non-Muslim* geographers as 'the Arabian Peninsula'?

And - this one is for Mr Ibrahim - are there any clear definitions within historic *Muslim* texts of what *they* regard as the boundaries of 'the Arabian peninsula'?

Because Kuwait is right on the very north-eastern edge of what any reasonable person, looking at the map, would call 'the Arabian peninsula'.

(Though I remember a Mohammedan dementor here at this forum years ago, attempting to pretend that all of *Israel* was 'part of the Arabian peninsula'...!!! - a thing that no Western geographer would accept for a moment).

Great comment! ...so true, Wellington.

hHs any one sent this call for destruction of churches in "Arabian peninsula" by this tom dick harry mufti to our elite media and NYTimes and such. Maybe they can learn something about Islam which they don't want to learn from us. Our elite media needs to grow some gray matter in their heads.

Imagine what would have happened if Pope or any cardinal called for destruction of all mosques from all western countries or a Hindu religious leader called for destruction all mosques in India?? Muslims all over the world would have rioted and killed all over!!

LOL!! So true! Best comment ever

Better, yet, is that we'd get a two-fer: Since most politicians have their heads up their a**es anyway about islame, it would be a broadside to their heads as well.

The DailyMail posted this image at impact.

Apparently the road bends at this point, with the concrete curb expanding to accomodate a service entrance which juts out @ a 90 degree angle facing traffic curving away at the turn. It appears the right front tire hit the curb and jumped it with the driver unable to compensate in time before impact with the abutment. Tragic.

Sounds like something the Antichrist will say.

For those interested, here is my take on a key eschatological portion of scripture that deals with this very subject: http://wp.me/p1qlPa-gC

The Saudi Grand Mufti's predecessor, Bin Baz, based his divinely inspired conviction that the Earth is flat on his lifelong study of Islamic texts, including the Koran.

Just more evidence of the absurdities of Islam, a man-made religion, and a plague on mankind.

Who says Muslims aren't anti-Christian?

The hadith about only one religion in the Arabian Peninsula is clear proof that Muhammad and Islam are inherently intolerant, not peaceful or "fair."

How does one make Islam the only religion in Arabia? By peaceful means? No, through violence, forced conversion, mass murder, expulsions, fear, intimidation. And the trendline continues into the 21st century on a global scale.

Islam cannot compete on the basis of ideas; it has historically competed almost exclusively on the basis of force or threats thereof.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose: Infidelphobia, infidel-hatred, religiocide, genocide, slavery, bloodlust, etc.

Sahih Muslim, Book 19, Number 4366:
Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab:"Umar heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: 'I will expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula and will not leave any but Muslims.'"

Sahih Bukhari, Book #52, Hadith #288
Narrated Said bin Jubair: Ibn 'Abbas said, "Thursday! What (great thing) took place on Thursday!" Then he started weeping till his tears wetted the gravels of the ground . Then he said, "On Thursday the illness of Allah's Apostle was aggravated and he said, "Fetch me writing materials so that I may have something written to you after which you will never go astray." The people (present there) differed in this matter and people should not differ before a prophet. They said, "Allah's Apostle is seriously sick.' The Prophet said, "Let me alone, as the state in which I am now, is better than what you are calling me for." The Prophet on his death-bed, gave three orders saying, "expel the pagans from the Arabian Peninsula, respect and give gifts to the foreign delegates as you have seen me dealing with them." I forgot the third (order)" (Ya'qub bin Muhammad said, "I asked Al-Mughira bin 'Abdur-Rahman about the Arabian Peninsula and he said, 'It comprises Mecca, Medina, Al-Yama-ma and Yemen." Ya'qub added, "And Al-Arj, the beginning of Tihama.")

Malik's Muwatta, Book #45, Hadith #45.5.18
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Two deens shall not co-exist in the Arabian Peninsula." Malik said that Ibn Shihab said, ''Umar ibn al-Khattab searched for information about that until he was absolutely convinced that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had said, 'Two deens shall not co-exist in the Arabian Peninsula,' and he therefore expelled the jews from Khaybar."

Saudi Arabia's Grand Mophead is correct; this IS exactly what Islamic law states: There are to be no non-Islamic houses of worship anywhere on the Arabian Peninsula?

Is the Chief Mophead a nasty "Islamophobe" for stating what the sharia states so clearly?

How do we get the idiots in Dar al Harb to see Islam as clearly as its proponents?

It's pretty obvious that it will take more than simply an airtight case to move our politicians to embrace reality. Any politician will have a thoroughly upstream battle to even breathe a word about Islamic philosophy.

"Who says Muslims aren't anti-Christian?"

That would be Obama and just about anybody from the MSM....

"And yet the West—with all its institutions of higher learning ... -is still thoroughly “confused” as to what Islam teaches."

So many of our institutions of higher learning are so in thrall to Islamic [esp. Saudi] donors that they're the sources of much of our confusion about Islam.

They take it for granted that there are no non-Muslims on the Peninsula using churches. They also must be pretty sure of their impending plunder of the West to support Muslims, as Mohammad said that jizya (tribute, plunder) is an income for Muslims (Sura 28:57) and they have eliminated the non-Muslims to plunder there.

From the stuff-you-can't-make-up dept:

Moreover, he is the President of the Supreme Council of Ulema [Islamic scholars] and Chairman of the Standing Committee for Scientific Research and Issuing of Fatwas.

They actually have a process to do this? Silly me, I thought these fatwas were just issued on whims.

Had Saddam conquered Kuwait, it wouldn't have remained a part of the Arabian peninsula. Not that it matters - Muslims are opposed to non-Muslim temples anywhere in the world, not just the Arabian peninsula. They just don't have the numbers elsewhere to enforce it as blatantly.

Scientific research: interpreting the Quran from exclusively Islamic premises is considered "science". It is the only eternal truth, you see.
I've seen this before. It means that before we can even begin to doubt the conclusions we have to waste a lot of time discussing what is "science".

Why haven't I read this in the national newspapers ? come on journalist do you job and let the world know what's happening in countries run by sharia law.

Raymond Ibrahim: Saudi Grand Mufti Calls for "Destruction of All Churches in Region"

...............................

Well, that's true. And, as Dumbedore's Army notes, some Muslims take "the Arabian peninsula" to include not just Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, and the Gulf States; but even Kuwait, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and *Israel*.

Ultimately, it hardly matters what the scope is, because Muslims regard this as just a first step to the razing of churches throughout Dar-al-Islam.

After all, Muslims are now violently destroying churches in such far-flung paces as Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt, Kosovo, and Nigeria.

They've already started on Europe, and no doubt will soon start in on the West itself if we let them.

The canadian Government is cracking down on the hypocrisy for the Saudi money pouring in to buy up canadian land for islam and build mega-Mosques for future attactions of more muslims to be shipped to canada and impose Whahhabism and Shariah Law by the number demanding it one day. The saudi's are now being called to the carpet for why they refuse to allow canadian Dollars from Non-islamic org.'s to get into their nation when canada has an unfettered access for them to build Mosques or fund Militant or Hamas linked org's like CAIR canada that Crusaded for Shariah Law ( sheema khan endrosed this barbaric law that has gotten about 12 girls murdered since 9/11/01)in Canada but now denies it to the Public.

The pakistani Community in Toronto and in canada has stayed quiet over the slaughters back home to non-muslims and the brutal attacks on Churches while Muslims in canada enjoy canada's freedom to practise THEIR faith.
Muslims seem to have a fall-back point to absolve islam from this violence and blame it on those FEW Misunderstanders that hijacked thier peaceful faith, and now we see that the Toronto Police are open to allowing the Niqab in the Uniform if it helps hire more Muslim females to meet the targets expected by Barbara Hall at the Human Rights Commission.
This is the same Barbara Hall that now takes side with my employer that I opposed for their pro-hamas friendship to sponsor a Public event where Laws are broken for Child-abuse and there is some quasi-pedophilia displays by naked males exposing themselves to little girls. The islamists have used the fear of Terrorism or a beheading to force the people in power to get Shariah Law imposed in Canada By-Proxy , and just this week Quebec has the guts to demand the end to Halal foods being imposed on non-muslims as the Producers fail to label the packages in some case.
Quebec wants to stop the Halal compliant Lunchrooms in Schools, plus stop this barbaric Torturing of animals and humans where they slit the throat of the victims to bleed to death and agonize the slow death.
Some muslims have once again pointed at "THE Jooos" for getting special exemptions from the laws as if islam is equal to any peaceful faith, but what is the point of having Anumal-Righrts laws in canada if Muslims now want to hide behind islam to torture them and feel right at home as if they are back in thier old islamic hell-hole where they saw off heads and chop of limps as a favour to allah.

Mufti calls for destruction of churches in the Peninsula?

Is he insane?

There ARE NO churches there, except in Kuwait and Bahrain. And these churches (besides the cathedral in Kuwait), are mostly houses, large villas, etc., that have been "converted" into worship spaces.

David, I believe the Saudi Grand Mufti is using the term "region" in a very broad sense, and likely includes churches in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and the "Palestinian territories"—and possibly Iraq and Egypt, as well.

These would include some of the oldest churches in existence, including some that predate Islam itself.

It also likely includes such iconic places as the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.

Here's an ancient church in Syria:

Another very old church in Syria:

The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem:

There are many, many more throughout the region—in spite of 1400 years of Muslim depredations.

Definition of "Arabian Peninsula": http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/arabia
___________________________________________________________

"A·ra·bi·a   /əˈreɪbiə/

noun

A peninsula in SW Asia, including Saudi Arabia, Yemen Arab Republic, People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Kuwait: divided in ancient times into Arabia Deserta, Arabia Petraea, and Arabia Felix. 17,800,000; about 1,000,000 sq. mi. (2,600,000 sq. km).
Also called Arabian Peninsula.

As I said, I believe there are no public churches in the Arabian Peninsula, except, to the best of my knowledge, Kuwait and Bahrain. Most houses of worship are underground, and in every sovereign state of the peninsula, Islam is the official religion. All others are not allowed to "show their faith" (open worship, festivals, feast days, etc.).

Well, he may be, but...

If that is the case, he doesn't have a basic knowledge of the terms of geography (peninsulas vs land masses), or he's practicing Taquiyya, or he is a blasphemer for wantonly modifying the words of the hadith which he seems to cite in his Fatwa-like declaration.

In any case of the three, a peninsula is still a peninsula and cannot be further defined as a "region" by us or the Mufti.

David Dowse wrote:

I had to laugh at this, David! (And no, I *don't* mean at you)

The other day, an Egyptian cleric managed to not only uncritically cite a notorious antisemitic calumny concocted by an American Fascist sympathizer in the 1930s and falsely attributed to Benjamin Franklin, but he *also* managed to confuse that worthy with that other Franklin, President Roosevelt. Hey—what's a couple of centuries between friends?

So the idea that the grandly-named Saudi Grand Mufti might have a rather shaky grasp of geography—even that of his own region—would hardly surprise me.

In any case, whichever of us might be correct in our speculations, there is no doubt that this "Grand Mufti" is a vicious moron of the worst sort.

“In fact, at the time of this writing, I have not seen this story, already some three days old, translated on any English news source, though "newsworthy" stories are often translated in mere hours”.
