Raymond Ibrahim: The Historical Reality of the Muslim Conquests

Because it is now almost axiomatic for American school textbooks to whitewash all things Islamic (see here for example), it may be useful to examine one of those aspects that are regularly distorted: the Muslim conquests.

Few events of history are so well documented and attested to as are these conquests, which commenced soon after the death of the Muslim prophet Muhammad (632) and tapered off circa 750. Large swathes of the Old World—from the India in the east, to Spain in the west—were conquered and consolidated by the sword of Islam during this time.

By the standards of history, the reality of these conquests is unassailable, for history proper concerns itself with primary sources; and the Islamic conquests are thoroughly documented. More importantly, the overwhelming majority of primary source materials we rely on do not come from non-Muslims, who might be accused of bias. Rather, the foremost historians bequeathing to posterity thousands of pages of source materials documenting the Islamic conquests were not only Muslims themselves; they were—and still are—regarded by today’s Muslims as pious and trustworthy scholars (generically, the ulema).

Among the most authoritative books devoted to recounting the conquests are: Ibn Ishaq’s (d. 767) Sira (“Life of Muhammad”), the oldest biography of Muhammad; Waqidi’s (d. circa. 820) Maghazi (“Military Campaigns [of the Prophet]”); Baladhuri’s (d. 892) Futuh al-Buldan (“Conquests of the Nations”); and Tabari’s (d.923) multi-volume Tarikh al-Rusul wa al-Muluk, (“History of Prophets and Kings”), which is 40 volumes in the English translation.

Taken together, these accounts (which are primarily based on older accounts—oral and written—tracing back to Muhammad and his successors) provide what was once, and in the Muslim world still is, a famous story: that Allah had perfected religion (Islam) for all humanity; that he commanded his final prophet (Muhammad) and community (Muslims) to spread Islam to the world; and that the latter was/is to accept it either willingly or unwillingly (jihad).

It should be noted that contemporary non-Muslim accounts further validate the facts of the conquests. The writings of the Christian bishop of Jerusalem Sophronius (d.638), for instance, or the chronicles of the Byzantine historian Theophanes (d.758), to name a couple, make clear that Muslims conquered much of what is today called the “Muslim world.”

According to the Muslim historical tradition, the majority of non-Muslim peoples of the Old World, not desiring to submit to Islam or its laws (Sharia), fought back, though most were eventually defeated and subsumed.

The first major conquest, renowned for its brutality, occurred in Arabia itself, immediately after Muhammad’s death in 632. Many tribes which had only nominally accepted Islam’s authority, upon Muhammad’s death, figured they could break away; however, Muhammad’s successor and first caliph, or successor, Abu Bakr, would have none of that, and proclaimed a jihad against these apostates, known in Arabic as the “Ridda Wars” (or Apostasy Wars). According to the aforementioned historians, tens of thousands of Arabs were put to the sword until their tribes re-submitted to Islam.

The Ridda Wars ended around 634. To keep the Arab Muslims from quarreling, the next caliph, Omar, launched the Muslim conquests: Syria was conquered around 636, Egypt 641, Mesopotamia and the Persian Empire, 650. By the early 8th century, all of north Africa and Spain to the west, and the lands of central Asia and India to the east, were also brought under Islamic suzerainty.

The colorful accounts contained in the Muslim tradition are typified by constant warfare, which normally goes as follows: Muslims go to a new region and offer the inhabitants three choices: 1) submit (i.e., convert) to Islam; 2) live as second-class citizens, or “dhimmis,” paying special taxes and accepting several social debilitations; 3) fight to the death.

Centuries later, and partially due to trade, Islam came to be accepted by a few periphery peoples, mostly polytheists and animists, who followed no major religion (e.g., in Indonesia, Somalia), and who currently form the outer fringes of the Islamic world.

Ironically, these exceptions are now portrayed as the rule in America’s classrooms, as many textbooks suggest or at least imply that most people who converted to Islam did so under no duress, but rather through peaceful contacts with merchants and traders; that they eagerly opted to convert to Islam for the religion’s intrinsic appeal, without noting the many debilitations conquered non-Muslims avoided—extra taxes, second-rate social status, enforced humiliation, etc.—by converting to Islam. In fact, in the first century, and due to these debilitations, many conquered peoples sought to convert to Islam only to be rebuffed by the caliphate, which preferred to keep them as subdued—and heavily taxed—subjects, not as Muslim equals.

Meanwhile, as U.S. textbooks equivocate about the Muslim conquests, in the schoolrooms of the Muslim world, the conquests are not only taught as a matter of course, but are glorified: their rapidity and decisiveness are regularly portrayed as evidence that Allah was in fact on the side of the Muslims (and will be again, so long as Muslims uphold their communal duty of waging jihad).

The dissimulation of how Islam was spread in the early centuries contained in Western textbook’s mirrors the way the word jihad, once inextricable to the conquests, has also been recast. Whereas the word jihad has throughout the centuries simply meant armed warfare on behalf of Islam, in recent years, American students have been taught the Sufi interpretation of jihad—Sufis make up perhaps one percent of the Islamic world and are often seen as heretics with aberrant interpretations—which portrays jihad as a “spiritual-struggle” against one’s vices.

Contrast this definition of jihad with that of an early edition of the venerable Encyclopaedia of Islam. Its opening sentence simply states, “The spread of Islam by arms is a religious duty upon Muslims in general.… Jihad must continue to be done until the whole world is under the rule of Islam.… Islam must completely be made over before the doctrine of jihad [warfare to spread Islam] can be eliminated.” Muslim legal manuals written in Arabic are even more explicit.

Likewise, the Islamic conquests narrated in the Muslim histories often mirror the doctrinal obligations laid out in Islam’s theological texts—the Koran and Hadith. Muslim historians often justify the actions of the early Islamic invaders by juxtaposing the jihad injunctions found in Islamic scriptures.

It should also be noted that, to Muslims, the Islamic conquests are seen as acts of altruism: they are referred to as futahat, which literally means “openings”—that is, the countries conquered were “opened” for the light of Islam to enter and guide its infidel inhabitants. Thus to Muslims, there is nothing to regret or apologize for concerning the conquests; they are seen as for the good of those who were conquered (i.e., the ancestors of today’s Muslims).

In closing, the fact of the Muslim conquests, by all standards of history, is indisputable. Accordingly, just as less than impressive aspects of Western and Christian history, such as the Inquisition or conquest of the Americas, are regularly taught in U.S. textbooks, so too should the Muslim conquests be taught, without apology or fear of being politically incorrect. This is especially so because it concerns history—which has a way of repeating itself when ignored, or worse, whitewashed.

What really needs to be taught is the history of the most recent of the Muslim conquests -- to wit, their conquest of Western academia, which kneels before them in unison like so many servicable concubines and viciously purges any resistance to their invidious orthodoxy.

Islam has been at war with the West in a life & death struggle for 1400 years & the liberals think this will all go away under the banner of political correctness. Astounding ignorance of history.

they are seen as for the good of those who were conquered (i.e., the ancestors of today’s Muslims).

Yes, and we can see just how much 'good' this has generated in 1400 years... A song line, 'Still crazy after all these years'...

I wonder if the western liberal university professors who "suckle the tit" of Islam would ever consider living/ working under sharia law and the stiffling of debate that exists in all muslim universities. These academic PinHeaDs(PHDs)would have a very rude awakening to the real Islam, when their female spouses are forced to wear the chador gabage bags over their entire body.

Exactly!

The nagging question is why doesn't every Senator and Congressman take 2 minutes to read this little essay?

Last year Bill O'Reilly blithely said "I can't imagine a religious leader like Muhammad saying such things..." in reply to an apostate telling him what was actually in the Koran. So, a voice heard by millions didn't even bother to look into the Koran for himself and then pooh-poohed the evidence?!

Absolutely let's get the facts of history correct. And while the West continues self-flaggelation, let's not forget that the "black record" account of Cortez's New World conquests was magnified by a political diatribe, and that in over 200 years of the Inquisition, only 2,000 were put to death.

The West has turned the old proverb upside down. Now we refuse to see the "beam of sin" in our neighbor's eye, while crowing about the mote in it's own eye.

"The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became truth." George Orwell

Raymond,

Your most-excellent and concise essay ought to be required reading to all newborns in their native tongue. It ought to be required reading in all world history, religion and political science classes.

Islam is perfect in at least one way: it is the perfect example of a perfect Imperial/Colonial solely self-interested power that has no regard for those it conquers, vanquishes or subjugates. The West is too busy magnifying its collective imperial/colonial guilt, though the sum of all the West's imperialism/colonialism pales in comparison to that of the "Perfect Man's". And when I say "West", I mean ALL non-Islamic powers the world has ever known, put together.

Christion who were forced to convert to Islam in Syria ...

I have so much time to read and post here in JW now I was blocked from IW …I used divide what ever time I have between the two …

My husband family was a well to do Olive land owners [spread all over north Syria and south of Turkey] Christian family, 700 hundred years ago. They were tired of paying Jiiza for all their lands they decided to convert to Islam in name only. I only discovered this information few yeas back from one member of family who cares to find the origins of families and their history.

I noticed when I met the branch that lived in Turkey that they act exactly non Muslim … no hijab for women .., western close with knee high skirts … they swim and dance with their husbands … they drive and work freely …...I remember whiching I was one of them. Not married to the branch of the side of family that lived in Syria side, they are stricter and all covered women worked but in between women moslty … they mixed with man but really .

It is amazing to me that the passage of time works against people believes and makes them change completely due to ignorance of own history and ancestry .

I meant to say Christians … not Christion

sorry

...in the first century, and due to these debilitations, many conquered peoples sought to convert to Islam only to be rebuffed by the caliphate, which preferred to keep them as subdued—and heavily taxed—subjects, not as Muslim equals.

This is what happened in India - Muslim rulers preferred to rule over Hindus and others - because the collection of the jizya afforded them a more lavish lifestyle than to rule over - Muslim converts who paid no such tax.

And they actually resisted calls to forcibly or otherwise encourage the conversion of their subjects.

I have wondered if the Taj Mahal was funded by wealth gained through collection of the jizya tax!!

::

Jihad - is like a rose by any other name!!

::

Islam is being taught by rote - in schools and possibly even in universities.

The complaints about the breezing over of Islamic history go some ways back - there was talk of why this was.

Because the violence of the Islamic conquests are seen in a religious context - they could never collectively view it as we would say the Native American - events. And what the school boards would want to do is the make history a religious matter - which is one of the reasons Islam's history of conquests is being minimized, unlike with the open examination and discussion of western history - in Islam there is the belief in the right to do it all over again.

::

Interesting fact - in India the Muslims applied to the court - to have their history erased from text and history books - as it was seen as being 'offensive' to Islam.

::

More, Indonesia's peaceful acceptance of Islam - should be examined closer. Anjam Choudary [Sharia4UK] in one video, was talking about how few jihadists it took to bring down a country. [Did not view it all] In it he made reference to how a small group of dedicated Muslims finally took Indonesia. Possibly Islam's presence and rise in Indonesia may not have been as passive as is widely claimed.

I came across this quote this morning and thought it appropriate to share on this thread because with "The Historical Reality of the Muslim Conquests" comes the inevitable Islamophilic demands for 'context' and limitations of criticism to the extreme minority of 'misunderstanderers-of-Islam'. . .
:

"When one studies the Inquisition or the Crusades, one does not feel obliged to make a clear distinction between ‘pure’ Christianity and those historical events. In a university, the examination of several analyses of history should be encouraged. The Muslim view is exclusively religion-based, and proceeds from the assumption that there is only one valid interpretation of history: the Islamic one. No criticism of jihad is accepted because it is a just war according to Muslim dogma.
This attitude imposes the worst law of dhimmitude on non-Muslims: the refusal of their evidence. The historical testimony of the millions of human victims of jihad is rejected on its face by this doctrinal attitude." - Bat Ye'or

Thanks for this; for the most part it is all true. There needs to be more balance in the text books and even church history books. Most sources I have read repeat something equivalent to this sentiment, "The non-Chalcedonian Christians (Copts, Jacobite-Monophysites in Syria) welcomed the Arab Muslims as liberators against the Byzantines (policies of Justinian and Hericlius) who were quartering troops to try and force them to accept the Council of Chalcedon."

It does seem that there is some truth to that; but that is not everything. Those Christian communities were deceived and then the Muslim conquerers instituted the Pacts of Omar ( 1 and 2) and Dhimmitude. Is there anyway to get data on that throughout the centuries that they later realized that they were deceived and that they got something worse? Many of the conquered peoples slowly converted to Islam because of societal and economic pressures. (Jaziye tax, no evangelism allowed, no new churches allowed, they were second class citizens and could not advance in society, etc.)

I do think we should acknowledge that the word, Jihad, by itself, means "struggle", "effort", "striving", but that most of the time in the Qur'an and Hadith it is used in the context of war and battle and killing / slaying/ fighting (Qatal) the unbelievers and Christians and Jews (Surah 9:29 - the word "Qatal" is used there, "to kill"/"to fight"/ "to slay". Or it is also used to describe those who are to strive by helping the fighters with their hospitality and material possessions and money.

Also, I think the Sufis are much more than 1% as Sufism in multi-faceted, and at various levels affects both Sunnis and Shiites. But Sufism was developed later as a reaction against pure external rituals, rules, and laws. From my understanding, only Wahhabis reject all of Sufism, but even some Salafis accept some aspects of Sufism.

O'Reilly's comment speaks to the situation of millions - The words of Mo and the fact of the crimes committed at his urging are so unbelievable that they can't possible be so. Therefore they are false by ex-post-facto, and fact-free, nay fact-erasing and fact-denying assertion. But false to be sure....I mean, there's NO WAY that craziness could be true, right???? So people pointing to the facts are just agenda-driven haters.

That's the mentality.

Also, Muslims claim that their Jihads/Qatal/Harb against Persia was a just opening of the way for Islam to spread.

Iranians (Persians) to this day, even though 98% of them are Muslim (mostly Shiite), still have a struggle with Omar and the Jihads that the Muslims did in order to conquer and subjugate Persia/Iran. The Iranians, for the most part, consider Omar to be an unjust aggressor of war-fare; and some have a celebration of making an effigy of Omar and blowing him up with fire-crackers or cutting him up with scissors after reading poems and curses upon him.

You can see a video of an Iranian lady relating the trial of Saddam Hussein and his attacks against Iran to the unjust attacks of Omar and the letters that Omar and Yazdegird wrote to each other at that time.

Raymond Ibrahim: The Historical Reality of the Muslim Conquests
.............................

Excellent piece, Mr. Ibrahim.

And this is not just some accident of history—it is acting well within the tenets and values of Islam.

"Surely, the gates of Paradise are under the shadows of the swords." — Muslim (20:4681)

Large swathes of the Old World—from the India in the east, to Spain in the west—were conquered and consolidated by the sword of Islam during this time.
.............................

And it didn't end there.

Islam conquered Nubia—large swaths of sub-Saharan Africa, between 700 and 1606. Islam made incursions into southern Italy and Sicily between 831 and 902. Islam conquered most of Anatolia between 1060 and 1360, and finally took Constantinople in 1453 after battering the Byzantine Empire for *over seven hundred years*. Following this, Islam began violent incursions into the Balkans.

By 1683 Islam was laying siege to the Gates of Vienna in the very heart of Europe.

Quite so. In fact, Muslims have been generally quite proud of their history of bloody conquest. It is only in the modern age—and to set Infidels at ease so they can better be lulled to inaction—that it has been politic to downplay Islam's grisly depredations.

More:

Meanwhile, as U.S. textbooks equivocate about the Muslim conquests, in the schoolrooms of the Muslim world, the conquests are not only taught as a matter of course, but are glorified: their rapidity and decisiveness are regularly portrayed as evidence that Allah was in fact on the side of the Muslims (and will be again, so long as Muslims uphold their communal duty of waging jihad).
.............................

Yes—we ourselves are complicit in this grotesque and ahistorical whitewash of Islam on the grounds of "political correctness". And it is all too convenient for Muslims to use such Taqiyya—*for now*.

Even now, we see Islam becoming much more openly aggressive as pious Muslims feel their strength.

If we don't act soon, there will come a time when Muslims will be all too happy to acknowledge their "glorious" past—but only when the Taqiyya has well done its job in fatally disarming us.

Actually, I believe that the Western academy is heavily corrupted, and not just by Islam. The dogma that homosexuality is the one writ-in-diamond aspect of human sexuality when all else about human gender is "fluid" and studies that child abuse in lesbian households is "zero" (and read the comments after the news stories reporting it!) are other examples from other quarters.

How much supposed "scholarship" on Mao's China, by people who'd dismiss reports of Communist atrocities as "anecdotal", was no more than parroting back the line given during arranged trips to Potemkin villages in the wake of Nixon's trip?

The spread of Islam in the West and the willing Dhimmi of the Left Academy (I will not dignify it with the name "liberal", which means loving freedom) is simply more evidence that we are living in a decaying culture that is destroying itself from within. The money from the Sa'udi Wahabbis merely fell upon people who were ready to be corrupted further.

"Indonesia's peaceful acceptance of Islam - should be examined closer. "

The overly praised scholar of Islamic history, Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936), is probably nearly single-handedly responsible for creating that meme -- that Indonesia was Islamized by peaceful osmosis, not conquest -- which continues to be parroted to this day, even by many in the anti-Islam movement. For Hurgronje was, and continues to be, deemed the go-to expert on Islam in Indonesia.

A scholarly article I ran across suggested an interesting revision of this Hurgronjean Paradigm that continues to rule Academe on this issue, based on an interesting little-known detail: Hurgronje dismissed innumerable accounts from native Indonesian lore that recounted violent coercion and invasion by incoming Muslims (including extortion of local leaders to use their power violently against their own people). Why did Hurgronje dismiss all this historical material? Because it was "lore"; he defined it as mere fable, and discounted any historiographical worth it may contain. Historians need to revisit all that lore and sift through it scientifically, and to recall that modern anthropology has taught us that cultures that pass on their histories orally through artful stories often have quite a bit of truth woven into those seemingly fanciful accounts -- instead of simply relying upon the word of one giant in the field, thereby committing the fallacy of Argument by Authority.

It depends also on one's perspective. Given all we know (or should know, by now) about Muslims and Islamic texts and history, I simply find it preposterous that any region anywhere on God's Green Earth could possibly have been taken over peacefully by Muslims (unless that region was populated by Eloi retards). Such a preposterous notion demands a much higher standard of proof to be even considered for inclusion at the bottom of our stack of More Important Things.

Ibn Battuta, in his accounts of what he saw in Sumantra, pretty much belies the claim that the conversion of Indonesia was peaceful. In Java, one of the rulers of a dynasty did convert, and made the rest of the population convert w/ him. While it was claimed that the Indonesian populace simply followed the religion of their rulers, that was hogwash, b'cos pre-Islamic Indonesia was a blend of Buddhist & Hindu, even though the rulers were themselves Hindu.

The places that the Muslims found it easiest to convert were hitherto Buddhist islands like Maldives, Socotra and other islands in the Indian ocean, including the ones in Indonesia. It should be noted that when Indonesia got its independence, only Java & Sumantra were Muslim, but since then, they've spread that cancer to the entire archipelago.

Actually, much of coastal Kalimantan and southern Sulawesi were also Muslim at the time of Indonesian independence. However, it is also true that the Indonesian government encouraged migration to other parts of the archipelago from Java and Sumatra.

Fine article by Raymond Ibrahim. Quite true. What has particularly amused me about history textbooks which mention the Islamic conquests is that such conquests are ordinarily described as examples of "Islam spreading" or "Islam expanding" or other anodyne phrases along these lines, but Western conquests of other lands are invariably described in negative terms, the favorite being a totally pejorative use of the word "imperialism." Of course, Islam was neve imperialistic. Nope, it just spread or expanded.

Infidel Pride wrote:

In Java, one of the rulers of a dynasty did convert, and made the rest of the population convert w/ him...
..................................

There are many similar reported cases.

I always used to take these at face value, and assumed both that the ruler in question was convinced through peaceful preaching and that they entire populace followed through love of and obedience to their monarch.

I'm sure it sometimes did happen that way. But given Islam's horrifically bloody history, I'm also sure that some of those rulers were presented with "an offer they couldn't refuse"—either a "voluntary" conversion to Islam and command that their people convert with them, or else their own ouster and murder and the slaughter of many of their subjects.

In addition, there are often a few dissenters, even with the most homogeneous and obedient population. One cannot help but wonder what happened to them...

graven image,

As I wrote above, there is copious Indonesian lore of violent attacks and assaults on the Indonesian peoples by Muslims. This lore was completely discounted by the great historian Snouck Hurgronje because he assumed it was just fanciful fables not fact; and no other historians apparently have bothered to take another look at this issue (though there could exist one or two scholarly articles buried deep within the dusty pages of some relatively unknown scholarlyy journals somehwere). So his word (because he was a giant in his specialty, the history of Islam in Indonesia) on the matter has become gospel in Academe -- which then percolates out into the non-Academic world as a meme parroted over and over again (even by people who should know better, like Hugh Fitzgerald).
