Shakila, the ex-Muslim writing from a Muslim country at the Liberated blog, has Easter greetings and some momentous news here.
Easter greetings from the Liberated One
Youssef's story about a gay Muslim couple whose marriage was blessed by a Muslim imam has some interesting details which the report apparently found unable to suppress:
First, the reporter points out that one of the gay man, Zahed, "...says that he faces more obstacles with the French law than discrimination from Muslims."
So this sets up the impression that we are worse than they are.
But buried further into the story, we learn almost parenthetically and casually, from a quote of Zahed's own words, that:
"Despite the threats that I get by phone or from the Internet, as well as, my struggle with the negative views that I get from Arabs and Muslims alike, today I feel more comfortable in my
own skin,” he said.
And furthermore:
The couple does not intend to travel to an Arab or Muslim nation for fear of being discriminated against. “We want to stay in France, because my husband really likes this country."
Aw, come on now -- you also want to stay in France because you know it will be infinitely safer than any Muslim country -- notwithstanding all the death threats and "negative views" you get from "Arabs and Muslims alike".
The report concludes with a final quote from Zahed:
However, if it becomes impossible for him to stay, "we will return to South Africa to live,” Zahed told France 24.
That's a strangely elliptical phrase -- "if it becomes impossible for him to stay" in France. What could possibly "make it impossible"? Unless those "negative views" and threatening phone calls and messages on the Internet are far more palpable and deadly than Zahed conveyed at first -- giving him good reason to fear that he and his partner may have to look over their shoulders every day, for fear of Muslims attacking them -- even in France.
