London university considering alcohol ban to avoid offending Muslims

Relax: it’s only on “part of its campus.” Will the Sharia section of campus carry out stonings and amputations as well?

Anyway, as we all know, when in Muslim countries, non-Muslims should abide by Muslim customs, mores, and laws. And when in non-Muslim countries, non-Muslims should abide by Muslim customs, mores, and laws.

“London Metropolitan University mulls alcohol ban for ‘conservative Muslim students,'” by Matthew Holehouse in the Telegraph, April 12 (thanks to all who sent this in):

A London University may become the first in the country to ban alcohol from part of its campus to attract more Muslim students, its Vice Chancellor has said.

London Metropolitan University is considering banning the sale of alcohol from some parts of the campus because a “high percentage” of students consider drinking “immoral,” Prof Malcolm Gillies said.

One-fifth of the University’s students are Muslim, and of those the majority are women. It is an issue of “cultural sensitivity” to provide drink-free areas, Prof Gillies told a conference, adding he was “not a great fan of alchol [sic] on campus”.

“It’s a negative experience – in fact an immoral experience – for a high percentage of our students,” he said.

He went on: “Many of our students do come from backgrounds where they actually look on [drinking] as a negative. And given that around our campuses you have at least half a dozen pubs within 200m, I can’t see there is such a pressing reason to be cross-subsidising a student activity which is essentially the selling of alcohol.”

“Because there’s no majority ethnic group, I think it [selling alcohol] is playing to particular parts of our society much more [than to others]”….

    ‘Prof’ Malcom Goldilocks : ” . .it’s an immoral experience. .”
That’s a no-brainer. How on earth can a so-called ‘professor’ come out with such an unalturated laad of b***ox ?

Hey professor Gillies – why don’t you go and teach in Saudi Arabia !

You won’t have to worry about all of those horrible pubs there, and the Saudis will be very ” sensitive “, to your cultural sensibilities.

Try visiting Mecca – but you might want to have a few drinks first..

I hit on a Muslim babe at a university once, spending the whole night and a considerable amount of money buying her orange juice, and I confess I didn’t get anywhere with her. That’s what I call immoral.

OK, so my morals aren’t maybe of a really high standard. Why would I even hit on a Muslim babe? Life is mysterious….

  4. says

Now that I think about that night I wasn’t hitting on a Muslim babe at all. I heard next day that I had mistaken a piano under a tarp for a Muslim babe.

Good thing I didn’t get lucky that night. Still, that might have made for a better relationship.

    Buffoons.
Lots of Muslim students come to London precisely because they want a good time and a bit of debauchery.
They want the Andy Choudary experience.
They want a respite from the stifling societies of their home countries. London’s nightclubs, “gentlemen’s clubs” and casinos are full of them. They won’t be attracted by offers to make their University experience more like going to a Saudi educational establishment. This move definitely won’t help the finances of London Metropolitan (you’re forgiven if you’ve never heard of it as it is a venerable institution dating back ten years).

The problem with students who stay in Britain comes a few years down the line. Like Anjem (though he’s British born) they turn to jihad, and proceed to hate and despise the host society while subsisting on state benefits. Perhaps they think that jihad is the only way to expunge their previous debauchery and earn the six dozen perpetual virgins with a side order of young boys like pearls.

Well, o.k. Moslems make up 20% (!) of the students at this university, so we’ll ban alcohol on 20% of the campus, and ban burkhas and the various forms of Moslem headdresses on the other 80%. Fair enough?

So that’s how typical dumb professors explain away their stupidy and utter lack of intelligent logic……

Doh…yea, those who drink, and pay money, is the part of society played to. And the business people selling it that make enough money to stay there, called capitalism. They don’t need artificial quotas, defined by stupid professors who teach (probably socialism), because they can’t succeed at business.

And that catered to and well served drinking group, include the intelligent drinkers that will stay alive 1/3 longer then their tea totalling non-drinking counterparts (including muslim gang criminal losers), assuming 2 drinks per day for males (1 drink per day for females)….. And people, if you aren’t aware of this paragraph’s fact, it is a stunningly repeatedly scientifically proven medical fact, for the last 20 or 30 years of little and major medically verified studies. As is also to a lesser degree of proven verity, the concept of eating less than recommended caloric intake and remaining rather skinny, should increase lifespan by a quarter or so, called a calorie restricted diet.

    ………………………….

I don’t suppose they could simply refrain from buying alcohol themselves? Nah…of course not. Shari’ah must be imposed on *everyone*.

    ………………………….

Oh, not yet. But we may well see other disturbing things, like the segregation of women, the enforcing of Hijab; enshrining Muslim prayer and fasting during Ramadan; and the censorship of anything deemed “offensive” to Muslims in terms of books, lectures, and courses of study. Plenty of time for Shari’ah to “progress” to stonings…

    ………………………….

Since when did 20% become a “high percentage” of students?

Well, London Metropolitan University ranks *118th* in the Guardian University Guide”meaning it is a pretty mediocre institution. Perhaps the professors there have little understanding of even basic facts…

    Sounds tailor-made for Muslims…

  9. says

Although I strongly object to creeping sharia and unique accommodations to Muslims in the public sphere and work place. I have no objection if it is a private organization that makes an economic decision, as in this case, to attract Muslim students and that decision is fully disclosed to applicants. Private universities in the US have kosher dining halls, public ones have seperate kosher dining halls paid for by private funds (Hillel). If the private institution makes a mistake and drives away non-Muslims, the market has spoken, so be it.

Given the expected abundance of Pakistani Muslims amongst the 6000 or so Muslims at London University – expect it to start looking like and behaving like “Lahore University” quite soon.

Expect the Islamic Jamaat, protests against music, hate crimes against non-muslims, rampant plagiarism and oh yes – forced wearing of headgear for women irrespective of their religion…

    I give it about 5 years…

  11. says

I’m confused. I went to university some time ago and there was no alcohol sold on campus. Students went outside campus, to nearby pubs, at the end of the day if they wanted to relax and drink. Since when was alcohol sold on campuses? Students are drinking in the daytime now? I don’t agree with the way alcohol is sold everywhere and all the time…nothing to do with Islam of course; “in my day” we had neither booze nor Muslims at university…it was nice…there were Trotskyists but you could avoid them easily enough.

I always thought it reflected a more civilized way of life in those old vintage films (30s, 40s) where you see some of characters after seeing the sights collapse at an outdoor table to a cafe in Paris or London — or in some smaller town in the south of France or in Spain — and when the waiter comes over, order “two sherries please, and a whiskey for our friend while we collect ourselves”. A cafe? serving hard liquor? I don’t think it’s the alcohol that has caused the deterioration in public order throughout Europe in the last 70 years.

  13. says

It is not a proper university, anyway( woodwork & knitting studies) – full of alien invaders, enrolled merely for the visa, sponging on benefits, plotting terrorism against the hand that feeds them. This latest shows just how pathetic are the British marxist ‘liberals’ seized by the throat by ‘political correctness’ and too dim and dhimmi to be able to think their way to the consequences of their capitulation to an evil, invading viral infection, with our destruction as its sole objective. If they knew, or cared, about what is happening all over the world, they might come to their senses and try to preserve what little of British culture and heritage remains – as it is, they may listen to the BBC, which is so heavily censored that they only get the ‘enrichers” side of the story – the rest of the time they also sponge on the state, with their heads in the sand, while islam kicks their arses!

  14. says

This is a NO-BRAINER- if “conservative Muslim students” dislike the consumption of alcohol as contrary to their faith then DON’T hang around bars( any more than pro-life Catholics would hang around abortion clinics, pacifists at military recruiting centres, vegetarians at abattoirs)!!! Funny how when it comes to the followers of the Prophet, the usual disdain shown by “trendy lefties” to religion becomes what the Victorians aptly termed a”wee timorous beastie”! LOL!

When will they force all students to face Mecca & pry 5 times a day ??

I always remember an old lady in London years ago when I studied there. ” England is no longer for the English” How prophetic she was back in the late 60’s.

I’d take my student elsewhere in a heartbeat. Education should be non secular !

  16. says

I suppose this is a red-herring but what does this University propose to do about Muslim dress codes for women?

Will they have a no-burqa zone to accommodate the other 80% who are not Muslim and may be offended by the attire? Well, obviously the real number who might be offended won’t be the entire 80% but perhaps the number might be as high at 20% of the entire student population. That seems to be a magic number to this University.

It is interesting that a University which should have professors steeped in the knowledge of Democracy and the concept of the will of the majority, would so misunderstand it that they would interpret will of the majority to mean 20% of the student body. Remind me not to take Mathematics at the Metropolitian University of London.

I suspect in a few years they will change their name to Muslimpolitan Madrasa of Londonistan. But that’s okay, by then the Muslims will represent 25% of the student body, a clear majority if there ever was one.

I also went to University some time ago. However, in the UK it is common to have licensed bars in on-campus Student’s Union buildings and in University staff Senior Common Rooms, and in urban campuses there are licensed public houses (pubs) within 50 to 100 yards of the campus. Some of the best education is to be had by discussion with peers at a bar. Bitter beer and pork scratchings, a facet of British culture.

London Metropolitan is public funded. There are two campuses, both with student social facilities

    For you and London Jim.

A famous old drinking song of students in universities all over the western world, from the high middle ages to the present day.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGJGd4yZUO4

A different version (complete with translation, and all the verses provided).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLUKfU2AOBY

In the long version there’s one verse that is particularly apposite:

    “Pereat tristitia,
    Pereant osores.
    Pereat diabolus,
    Quivis antiburschius
    Atque irrisores..”.

    “Let sadness perish!
    Let haters perish!
    Let the devil perish,
Along with anybody else who is anti-scholarship
    And anti-intellectual!”

That last bit about those who hate scholarship and the intellect…well..Boko Haram, anyone? Historically, Islam has *killed* thought, art and joy as well as banning wine and beer.

    Agreed !
Where I went you were always at a bar near campus . Gray”s Inn had a long wine bar at the entrance . We also sat term as part of the rituals at the Inn which required toasting each other until inebriated ! It was a sight to see these old esteemed Justices totally drunk at the end of the event .
    Great fun !

Slightly OT but in fact it was the Scottish national Bard(the famous Scottish poet Rabbie Burns) who coined the phrase “wee , sleekit, cow`ring tim`rous beastie, O what a panic`s in thy breastie! in his famous poem “to a mouse, on turning her up in her nest with the plough, november 1785.
