Timur Kuran, of Turkish origin, and now professor of economics at Duke University has written much about Islam and economics, the latest of which is:

It is an excellent read and his thesis is telling as to why much of the Islamic world, remaining as yet unreformed, does not lend to sound and vibrant long term economic growth & success.

Once you factor out the question of oil—and even, often, when you don't—the most Islamic nations tend to be some of the most poverty-stricken and backward nations on earth.

Saudi oil wealth is subject to alternative forms of propulsion or energy being allowed to move ahead - with the development of EV vehicles and other technologies - things could look very different in that region.

Obama did say in his Cairo speech that they should not depend solely on oil - that they should diversify. Doubt if they will listen.

We are dependant on the oil as well - but for those who think that oil is the way forward - it would be hard to convince a person - that they should not buy a car that could travel 1000 or more miles on a single charge - and cost them $4-5 to recharge - and to buy a gas guzzler that would cost a few hundred bucks at least - to do the same journey.

Once the car /motor vehicle technology becomes like the computer technology - it's over for the Arabs.
