What Hamas is teaching little Muslim kindergarteners in Gaza today is really no different from what Nasser's Islamic Egypt was teaching Muslim schoolkids in Gaza in the 1950s.

The formidable American journalist Martha Gellhorn - who reported on the Spanish Civil War, and also reported upon pre-WWII and post-WWII Germany, and visited the newly-opened Concentration camps after the fall of the Third Reich - visited Israel and neighbouring countries - Jordan, Lebanon, and Egyptian-ruled Gaza (which she compares both to a prison, and to a lunatic asylum - in 1960, and again after the Six Day War.

Observations of Gaza, ruled by Egypt:

"The Egyptian officials could not have been kinder, and I loved seeing them, the new ruling class, who, remind me, in their cheerful, inchoate, important busyness, of many new ruling classes I have observed round and about, over the years.

"It is difficult to believe that these pleasant young men, in shirtsleeves or uniforms, with their numerous callers, their telephones, their mounds of mimeographed forms, their empty Turkish coffee cups, have any connection with the vainglory, the xenophobia, the anti-Semitic hatred that smear the press and pour over the air of their fascinating city."...

"The refugee camps are much larger than those in Lebanon, small towns by Middle Eastern standards.

"They are by no means luxury establishments, but many people live in a nastier state in American and European slums [and Gellhorn knew exactly what she was talking about – she had visited the homes of the destitute during the Great Depression in America – dda.]

"The poor villagers of Gaza are not as well housed or cared for as the refugees.

"The Gaza Strip is not a hell hole, not a visible disaster. It is worse; it is a jail--with a magical long white sand beach, and a breeze, and devoted welfare workers (UNRWA) to look after the prisoners.

"**The Egyptian government is the jailer.**" (my emphasis - dda)

"For reasons of its own, it does not allow the refugees to move from this narrow strip of land.

"The refugees might not want to leave at all, or they might not want to leave for good; but anyone would become claustrophobic if penned, for thirteen years, inside 248 square kilometers. A trickle of refugees, who can prove they have jobs elsewhere, are granted exit visas. The only official number of the departed is less than three hundred, out of 255,000 registered refugees. It seems incredible. Rumor says that more refugees do manage to go away illegally, by unknown methods.

"These locked-in people--far too many in far too little space--cannot find adequate work. Naturally, there is less chance of employment than in the other "host countries."

From the same article, some general remarks about Arab - that is to say, primarily Arab Muslim, but it also deeply infected the Arab or Arabised Christians among those whom Gellhorn interviewed - Jew-hatred:

"The Arab [that is, Arab and Islamic - dda] psychosis (an ornate word but not too strong) about Israel is official, and infectious. There may be many reasonable people in the Arab [in the Arab/ Islamic - dda] countries who are able to think calmly about Israel and about Arab-Israel relations; if so, they choose safety and keep their mouths shut."

And again (and for 'Arabs' one might just as well write, 'Arabs and Muslims', or else simply 'Muslims' - dda):

"Arabs gorge on hate, they roll in it, they breathe it. Jews top the hate list, but any foreigners [sic: more accurately, non-Arabs, non-Muslims - dda] are hateful enough.

" Arabs also hate each other, separately and en masse.

"Their politicians change the direction of their hate as they would change their shirts.

"Their press is vulgarly base with hate-filled cartoons; their reporting describes whatever hate is now uppermost and convenient. Their radio is a long scream of hate, a call to hate. They teach their children hate in school.

{As we see amply demonstrated by the report we are discussing today, from Gaza, a full fifty years after Martha Gellhorn visited the region; but as is also amply demonstrated by investigations of the curriculum in Islamic schools all over the world, including Islamic schools in the UK, Australia, and the USA - dda}

"They must love the taste of hate; it is their daily bread. And what good has it done them?"

Gellhorn visited the Middle East - including Gaza - again, more than once, after the Six Day War.

There are a few telling excerpts from her articles and from her 'raw' notebook jottings from that period, that may be read in the biography 'Martha Gellhorn: A Life', by Caroline Moorhead. Moorhead is hostile toward and wholly uncomprehending of Martha's ruthlessly realistic view of Arab/ Muslim viciousness and venomous Jew-hatred, and refuses to recognise the validity of Gellhorn's ongoing and steadfast support of Israel. Nevertheless, the passages she cites - as 'evidence' of what she views as Gellhorn's wicked and unfounded prejudice against the Pooooor Poooor Widdle Persecuted Palestinians - are worth reading.

Here is the relevant passage from Moorhead's book:

‘For the Guardian, Martha had agreed to revisit the Palestinian camps of her earlier journey, and to write about the effect of the 1967 war on these refugees. Her notes make uncomfortable reading (only for those who like Moorhead have unthinkingly swallowed the Arab/ Muslim Big Lies and the Mohammedan pantomime of victimhood - dda).

‘Her opinions had not changed, but the language was more extreme. Nasser, president of Egypt for the past twelve years, was still the villain. [And he damn well was! What’s wrong with Moorhead? - dda].

"He should be shot, Martha noted in her diary, to ‘avenge the black corpses of the poor slave Italians in the Sinai.’

"Palestine was a myth, taught at home and school to a people who, if given the chance, would prefer compensation ‘for their imagined lost possessions.’

"The Gaza strip, ‘a garden spot, 150 square miles of rolling land covered with citrus groves and green fields’, shaded by the ‘waving plumes of eucalyptus trees’, its roads lined by flowering oleanders, was nothing other than a huge lunatic asylum. It was the nastiest place on earth, and needed psychiatrists, not aid workers.’"

‘The war had neither touched nor troubled the refugees, yet according to Martha those she talked to were sullen, resentful, suspicious, afraid, and full of hatred [just like today - - dda]. Re the term 'Arab':

It seems to me that just as Nazism codified, normalised and sacralised all the *worst* traits or besetting sins of the German ethnos (attempting to make dominant their shadow or 'demonic' self, to the exclusion of all other possibilities), so Islam codified, normalised and sacralised the Arab 'shadow' self, all the *worst* traits/ besetting sins of the Arab ethnos...and then set about trying to impose that ghastly paradigm on all other people, as well.

First of all, if you don't know that, ("how is seeking the lifting, blah, blah, blah...")  I'm obligated to recommend a book that, hopefully, you'll understand and will be able to answer a few questions for you when it comes to the origens of this whole "right of return" mess. Second to answer your questions directly it's not OUR "values of freedom & justice" that is at issue here:

The book I'd recommend you read is "The Haj". It's not a "college" book. It's a historical novel. But it's a good start. Before you start playing "ambassador" in issues you don't understand I suggest you do your homework.

I'm not the most sophisticated person on the planet but I couldn't see how they could honestly be asking me that question.
