Tunisia: Islamic supremacists destroy un-Islamic artwork

More flowering of Western-style pluralism in "Arab Spring" Tunisia. "Protesters damage ‘offensive’ artwork in Tunisia," from AFP, June 11 (thanks to Benedict):

Protesters have damaged several works of art at an exhibition in Tunisia, in what appears to have been the latest in a series of attacks by Islamic religious hardliners on liberal or secular targets.

A group of men broke into the venue in the northern suburbs of Tunis overnight Sunday-Monday, slashing several canvases and dismantling one art installation, said the show’s director Luca Luccatini.

Earlier Sunday, several men believed to be ultra-conservative Salafist Muslims had turned up presenting themselves as a lawyer and bailiffs and demanding that four works judged “offensive to sacred values” be taken down, he said.

For AFP, you're "ultra-conservative" if you are a Sharia-enforcing thug, and also "ultra-conservative" if you're a freedom-loving opponent of Sharia.

“We called the police because their behavior was aggressive and they threatened to come back,” said Luccatini.

Supporters of the art exhibition later faced off with a group of bearded men dressed in the style of Salafists outside the gallery, which was broken into after it had closed for the day.

As well as the paintings that were destroyed, one installation, called “The Ring” -- which showed the faces of Tunisian women, Jewish and Christian, painted on punching balls -- was dismantled and removed, Luccatini told AFP.

He said he had filed a formal complaint over the incident, which he said smaks [sic] of “fanaticism”.

The interior ministry said police had seized four works that were attracting controversy in order to keep them safe.

The culture ministry, while saying it supported freedom of creation, denounced what it said were “all kinds of aggression against sacred values” as presented in some of the works on show.

Lamia Guemara, one of the artists whose work was damaged, told AFP: “I feel enormously angry. It’s sad that we’ve come to this.”

Indeed.

Last month, Justice Minister Noureddine Bhiri threatened to punish Salafist Muslims who push their views on others too hard, after radical Islamists forced a series of bars and shops selling alcohol to close.

But critics of the extremists have denounced the lack of action by the authorities in the face of the sometimes violent moves by Salafists.

These are not "protesters"—these are destructive vandals.

I can't know for sure from this description, but it sounds as though this art piece was against violence against women. Of course that would be against Islam's "sacred values".

Really? Or is this just *state censorship*?

"Culture ministry", huh? Not exactly a staunch defender of freedom of expression...

"... and also "ultra-conservative" if you're a freedom-loving opponent of Sharia."

An "ultra radical right wing", "islamophobe"... etc. BUT only if you're non-muslim, if you're a muslim who opposes this behavior-really small minority- then you're magically labeled a "liberal or secular".

Oh the buffonnery of western media and its goebbelian tactics.

There is nothing "sacred" about Islamic "values", which are rooted in blind superstition and inimical to human life. And if there are any muslims who do oppose this behavior, they are miserable, skulking cowards for not speaking out against it. Of course, what they are waiting for is the destruction of the "miserable house" of the "filthy kuffar" or "kafir" or whatever the proper moo-slum equivalent of the n-word is, so they can loot the West because theft and thuggery are indeed, "Islamic values".

Islam is a dark hole of human culture and progress. It draws cultured lands and civilizations in, but nothing ever comes out. Islam will flatten culture and civilization, sitting on top of the mud on Earth, until some random asteroid falls and wipes out the human race.

If civilization and scientific progress had continued, chances are the path of the asteroid could have been tracked and changed. But, if Islam prevails, there will be no warning, understanding, or prevention.

The Reform Jewish organizations, who side with Muslim groups like the Islamic Society Of North America, don't realize that Jewish texts and traditions will likely be allowed to remain undercover for a century or two at most. Then, the hard-liners will overthrow any trace of an organized government, and anything Jewish or otherwise cultured will be burned, defaced, and simply destroyed.

The advancement of human culture will simply crumble under Islam, like the Buddhist Banyans in Afghanistan.

Just think what these morons and so many other Muslim morons like them would do to the Sistine Chapel if they got the chance.

And to the Louvre.

And to the Uffizi.

And to so many, many other marvellous things, sacred and profane, all over the West and also beyond the West, wherever human beings have created beauty.

The storytelling totem poles of the Native Americans of the Northwest coast, the paintings and carvings of the Mayans, the tiki of the Maori, are just as much in danger as the Mona Lisa and the Michaelangelos and the Rodins.

Sita Ram Goel's catalogue of Hindu temples and shrines that were smashed and looted by the Muslims - and that would have been chockful of paintings and sculptures from top to bottom - runs to a thick volume of very thin pages...sort of like the NYC telephone book, only each listing is the name and barest description of a treasure destroyed by Muslims.

More on Sita Ram Goel's long, long list.

From a posting by Hugh Fitzgerald, former contributor to this forum.

In this thread (discussing a Muslim attack upon a temple in India):

http://www.jihadwatch.org/2005/07/india-terrorists-storm-ram-temple-killed-in-encounter.html

"There is a two-volume work, on thin, Indian-publisher-style paper, by Sita Ram Goel, that lists, page after page, the temple complexes of Hindus known to have been razed by the Muslim invaders, conquerors, masters of all they surveyed and seized.

"The list of Hindu temples (or temple complexes) goes on and on - thousands, tens of thousands. Just the names of those temples, not details of their statuary, their sculptures pulled down and broken into pieces, the stone taken, often to build mosques."

Something to think about.

Two apostates from Islam who regularly visit and/ or post at these pages are 'Bosch Fawstin' and 'fineliving'.

*Both* are visual artists.

Both could not joyfully and fully manifest their natural talent and vocation within the straitjacket that is Islam.

Fineliving has even told us, in a posting some time ago, how when she was a little girl and started innocently and happily drawing people and human faces her parents and teachers were horrified, and chided and punished her and stopped her from doing it, because visual (and also sculpted) representations of living beings - human, animal, supernatural such as angels) is strictly forbidden by the Sharia of Islam.

I haven't heard Bosch Fawstin's story: but one doubts whether *his* childish efforts to draw people and creatures - if he did such things, and most who have the 'art' bug tend to manifest it the moment they find out what a pencil and paper can do - would have met with much approval either, from his Muslim family.

Think of the millions of born-artists whose natural, innate gift and vocation was either wholly suppressed or else stunted and damaged and forced into the confines of Islamic calligraphy and abstract arabesques, because they were unlucky enough to be born inside the Ummah. How many, I wonder, may have been mistreated or even killed because they simply could not stifle their impulse to represent the people and creatures that they saw around them?

Whereas the artistically gifted, born into any part of the free non-Muslim world, tend to be admired and approved of by at least some and possibly many of the people around them - whether they be born to educated, sophisticated families in Japan, India, Europe, America, or whether they live in a remote Papua-New Guinea jungle, an island in the Pacific or a village in southern Africa.

My first reflexive thought was ''perish the thought of that'' . .then I got real, and came to terms with the fact that these freaks need to be met with stern action. They have no love of Art.
Hell, I got aboard a bus the other day, and took a seat behind a guy who was a dead-ringer for Anjem Choudary. He was poring over some Islamic text and making notes hurredly as I peeked over his shoulder and gave him a gust of my beery breath. .the chicken s**t folded his book and paperwork and resat himself a few seats forward.
Conclusion: Salafists are a**wipes when it comes down to a rumble.

From the article:

This reminds me of something that Gravenimage told us about, some years ago.

Because when she was a young artist, just starting out, one of *her* exhibitions was targeted by Mohammedan art-haters. **In America**.

She posted her account of that shattering experience here, in 2006, in the comments on this thread:

"I agree with you, Monkeywho [another poster - dda].

"Unlike most of the people here, I have actually been the victim of Muslim censorship. I hope you will indulge me if I recount this at some length.

"When I was first at College I worked at the International House in Berkeley.

"One of the directors saw my artwork and offered me a show.

"I had had a few pieces in group shows, but i had not had a solo show yet. I was so excited! I was just 19.

"I arrived at work two hours early on Friday so I could mount my artwork in the cases. Like most young artists, it was a bit of a hodgepodge--landscapes, portraits, and a number of fairy paintings. One of the fairies was nude. This was a tasteful nude, with long flowing hair and butterfly wings. There were Children's illustrations from the Victorian period that were more explicit, so I thought nothing of it.

"As a "starving artist" I had hand-made most of my own frames from painted balsa wood, which is inexpensive but very fragile. Most of the larger pieces were unframed, and just mounted with tacks.

"After I finished my classes for the day, I raced back up to the International House to get another look at my artwork hanging on the wall.

"I was stunned to find that everything had been ripped down--there were chunks of wood and torn bits of artwork littering the bottom of the cases.

"My first thought was theft, but I soon realized that this made no sense--I was unknown at the time, and the cases themselves were intact.

"It being Friday, the office was closed for the weekend. I would have to wait until Monday to find out what had happened to my artwork.

"On Monday morning, I raced to the office as soon as it was open. The director seemed chagrinned.

"There had been a complaint about my art.

"I could not imagine who would have complained--and about what? Then I remembered the nude--was there, maybe, some old, uptight visiting alumnus who was offended?

"Then I learned that the complainants were *students*. This made even less sense to me. Conservative Christians, maybe? I really could not think of anyone.

"Then I learned that the complainers were Muslim students, particularly Iranians.

"This was 1979, and I knew about the "Islamic revolution" in Iran, and had heard about the religious crackdowns there. I had assummed, though, that any Iranian students here in the West would count themselves lucky to be well away from this kind of narrow-minded insanity. The idea that they would carry it with them to a Liberal Western University seemed inconcievable to me.

"I had not meant my show to be controversial--it was meant to be sweet and beautiful.

" I asked why they couldn't have waited for me to remove the "offending" piece.

"Oh, she said, she had suggested this.

"When they protested, she offered to hang a sheet over it until I could take it down.

"They insisted that it come down right away--and all of it, all of it, not just the nude.

"I don't think she ever considered saying no.

"We did not even discuss this as a possibility.

"I don't know if they themselves tore it down--more likely, it was just someone (perhaps the director herself) who simply did not know how to take the artwork down without severly damaging it.

" In any case, many of the frames were broken or dented. Many of the smaller unmounted paintings were torn beyond salvaging.

"One of the pieces I was able to save, ironically, was the nude itself, by trimming it rather severely where it had been ripped around the edges.

"A few days later, a neutral "History of the International House" display appeared in the cases. A few months later, I did get another show. I did not hang any nudes. By this time, I had already had a few shows elsewhere, at small galleries and cafes.

"I wish that I could tell you that I really learned something about the nature of Islam at the time. For a while, it was just an odd, painful anecdote.

"I am sad to say that it probably took another decade for me to really understand the significance of this event, how widespread the destruction of art by Muslims has been.

"It would take until 9/11 for me to completely realize the threat Islam made to the non-Muslim world." END.

Note: when those Iranian Muslims destroyed Gravenimage's exhibition they did so **on a Friday**.

I don't think that's a coincidence.

Hello dumbledoreasrmy

Your observation is very correct of what happens to the unlucky visual talent that is born into Islam

In my case I like to make something clarification about my story of Islam and talent …

It is true that I was prevented from drawing faces from when i was a chid .. but mostly by the islamic school I was sent to … not as much as by my parents … they did not pay as much attention to me and my drawing … they were too involved being the victims of islam .. My father the beater and my mother the victim …

It was done mostly by my Muslim teachers who tried to stump on it …and not just by my art class teachers, they only wanted me to draw everything but humans which I wanted to do the most .. it was done by many teachers from different subjects too [ I had the unconscious habit of not able to have a pencil in my hand without starting to draw faces on every available space on all my all book covers … as a teen I used to draw my teachers faces .

One time I was kicked out of Quran class because I was so bored, so I drew a pretty girl with long hair and a smile … I remember My teacher said, I was going to be in Hell fire and before that, I could go out of the Quran classroom, since it is not that interesting to me … haha … I think I started to hate Islam since then and I did not realize it, that and also the first time I found out beating wives is a must in Quran … I remember resenting Allah and his rules ...that allows men to do that to their wives instead of loving them.

I think having the mind of an artiest paved the way so to speak … it was the filter ground that allowed me to be able to see the true Islam not how it was presented to me.

I did not read about the other ex Muslim Fawstin artiest …that you mentioned .. I most have missed his posts … I am usually unable to read all the posts .. there is not enough time … haha

Take care

"critics of the extremists have denounced the lack of action by the authorities in the face of the sometimes violent moves by Salafists"

The "authorities" are very well aware that they will be for the chop if they interfere too aggressively with the salafists. Next there'll be a killer heading their way: this is how the minority - we are always assured the extreme extremists are only a minority - push forward their agenda to dominate an islamic society.

Considering how things are done to the western, secular societies and the self-censoring reactions following, I can only imagine how easily the salafist agenda is imposed in a society already primed for it.

Thankfuly the 'priming', that you speak of, was put into place long before Mohammed ever took his first suck of his mother's teat.

I'm an artist. My name is Larry A. Singleton. I live in Riverside CA. It broke by heart when I saw those Buddhist statues destroyed in Afhanistan. The reason I'm writing in the first place and putting my name is because prior to reading this I read the article about Joel Shrum and Jeremiah Small being murdered by Muslims. A week or so ago I watched the video of the Christian convert getting his head cut off by Muslims accusing him of being an apostate while yelling Allahu Akbar the whole time. I've watched beheadings before but for some reason this one just depressed the shit our of me. I didn't realize until the end that I had tears running down my face. My hands were shaking. And I was in a funk for a long long time. It still bums me out in ways I can't explain to myself even today. Right now.

To continue I won't even say the name Islamists. They might as well have been murdered by every peace loving Muslim in the world because they are equally to blame. I wanted my name on the record because I know this site is checked out by those sympathetic with those murderers and probably by the murderers themselves. I hope so. Because I just want to say, for the record, you're nothing but a bunch of low-life scum. You're the lowest form of species on the planet. And I'm saying that about Muslims specifically. You're a bunch of low down dirty cowards.

No other “religion” on the planet puts up with the kinds of crimes and atrocities Muslims tolerate in their own religion. Deceit and lying seems to be a part of your DNA. I'd attribute it to generations of inbreeding but unfortunately, even Americans are buying into the obscenity, the total fraud, that is Islam.

Muslims always like to point the finger at the fact that we have things like the Ku Klux Klan here in America. Thing about it is you'll never hear an outcry if the Muslim Brotherhood wanted to “adopt a highway” and do “community service” cleaning up the roadside as a PR stunt. (Which the Klan is doing by the way.) Which is unfortunate. The point is you ARE hearing it about the Ku Klux Klan. As a matter of fact, where ever they appear in America they usually need a police escort to keep the community from kicking their worthless asses. (I wish the Mexican and Black community would do the same with the gang bangers who strut around their communities like visiting dignitaries but....oh, well.)

One day Americans will get wise to the fact that the Muslim Brotherhood are the Klans ideological soul-mates. For now it's the Klan who'll get stoned whenever they show up in public.

To continue, it's the Muslims “Holy” books where you'll find more references to death and killing such as Sheikh Abdullah Bin Muhammad Bin Humaid-ex-Chief Justice of Saudi Arabia and his article on “Jihad” that you'll find in the Bukharis and Korans shipped over here from the Middle East.

Or let's compare the last words to your pedophile, mass-murderer compared to Jesus:

Jesus: “Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” Luke 23:34

Muhammad: “May Allah curse the Jews and Christians for they built the places of worship at the graves of the prophets.”

Or how about martyrdom you low down dirty stinking losers:

I like to take a page out of Richard Wurmbrand's book “Tortured for Christ”. In his Forward, appropriately titled “Martyr”, he gives an excellent description of what a martyr is:

"Many today believe that a martyr is simply someone who dies for his faith. Unfortunately, by this definition we have lost the true significance and depth of martyrdom. St. Augustine once stated, "The cause, not the suffering, makes a genuine martyr.

According to the original Greek, "martyr" means "witness." The writer of Hebrews states that "we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [martyrs]" (Heb_12:1), and Jesus instructs us in Act_1:8, "You shall be witnesses [martyrs] to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

“The New Testament martyr not only personally testified to the truth and power of Jesus Christ, but was instructed to take that witness to others, regardless of the cost. Later in the book of Acts, we read about the stoning of Stephen, making him the first to pay the ultimate price for that witness. It is at this time that the word martyr took on a much stronger meaning as one who not only is a witness but as one who is willing to give his life or to be martyred for that cause.”

“to give his life”

Not TAKE a life for the “cause” you worthless morons!

The reason you kill Christians is because you know how easy it will be for them to show the evil that is Islam compared to the Good that is Christianity....and well anything else compared to Islam.

We've all heard the words of those Muslims released from prison in Egypt. Let me know if they sound anywhere close to this Lhasa Monk who had been put in prison by the Chinese and tortured almost every day of the eighteen years that he was in there. When he got out the Dali Lama asked him, “Were you ever afraid?” He replied, “Yes, there was one thing I was afraid of. I was afraid I may lose my compassion for the Chinese”.

The only Muslim I can think of who comes even close to anything like that is Mahmoud Mohamed Taha. I like to think of him as the Mahatma Ghandi of Islam. I also think as good and kind and educated as he was, he was also misguided. He was misguided because he was fighting a losing battle trying to win a fight he couldn't possibly win. He was trying to turn his Islamic religion into something it's not. His fellow Muslims finally drove that point home by executing him for apostacy. For the first and only time in history they had it right. Not for murdering the best thing that ever happened to that religion. But for proving that that's what Islam would always be...an instrument of murder and human misery.

It also spoke to the spirit and true nature of Islam. Taha and his followers were “freaks” Where Islam was concerned. There were thousands that attended his trial..... and they were all chanting for his death. His Republicans were the minority.

And it's a shame because Taha pretty much called it and he didn't even realize it. In the Preface to his book, "The Second Message of Islam" he quotes one of the Messenger's companions who said, “No sooner had we dusted from our hands the soil of the Messenger of God's grave than we disowned our own hearts.” "From that point onwards", Taha writes, “Islamic civilization continued to decline....”

And I could stop there but I want to give one more example of just how worthless and pathetic this “perfect” religion is in comparison to....well, everything else.

What DID happen with the “perfect mans”......“deciples”? They fell on each other like a pack of dogs. When reading the history of the Caliphs who succeeded Mo, or the rightly guided ones as they were called, their names and the names of Mo's descendents are splattered in the blood of assassination and betrayal. Caliph Ali, Mo's cousin and son-in-law was assassinated by one of his former supporters, while his son, Al-Hussein was murdered along with the rest of his family. The Caliph's reign, (of terror), was called the golden age of Islam. Yeah, and I've got a bridge....

And all you Mooslims out there in that perfect religion of yours....what happened to the followers of Jesus? What kind of men were they compared to the backstabbing jackels who went on to commit mass murder and rape on a scale not even seen during the Holocaust? With all their faults. With all their idiosyncracies, they stuck to their guns and became lessons in humility that has lasted for over 2,000 years.

They're the kind of examples that enspire people to BUILD churches. YOUR “desciples” have encouraged generations to BURN THEM DOWN.

I should apologize. Maybe I shouldn't admit it but I go to Bible study. I try to meditate. I try to work on this Irish temper of mine.

And then I remember that this is a character defect that is actually encouraged in Muslims. To Muslims Anger and Hate is a good thing.

Just like reading is a bad thing. The Middle East has had less books translated into Arabic in the last one thousand years than some countrys have had in just one year alone. At least that's what I've heard.

I'm thinkin' it's got to be the case otherwise there are two books that would convince even the most stallwart Muslim that maybe he's on the wrong track. Those books are “The Haj” by Leon Uris and “Slavery, Terrorism and Islam" by Peter Hammond. You can also go to my Facebook page and read “Arguments to Islam...” in Notes.

To those who are desciples of Taha I do apologize. Seeing that story about Shrum and Small just set me off. Every American schoolboy in, at least, Junior High, should be required to read the two books I just mentioned and also have the opportunity to see that video of the Christian Convert being beheaded. Every girl should watch “The Violent Oppression of Women in Islam" produced by David Horowitz and read “Infidel” by Ayaan Hirsi Ali and “Because They Hate” by Brigitte Gabriel.

Again I apologize but I think one of the diseases this country suffers from is “Ignorance of the Facts”. Brought on by the massive problem with illiteracy in this country.
Again, if this is inapropriate, I apologize. There have been some people here who have shown some real patience with me. Man, I just see this stuff and I get so pissed off.

Sorry

This is a perfect example of why the absolute ruler, dictator or king, is the most productive form of government in a Muslim society. The Salafists are not tolerated, and realize that if they raise waves, they will be eliminated in gruesome ways. A Muslim ruler is under no illusions as to the nature of his culture.

A liberal society, devoted to individual rights, is simply not set up to deal with the Islamic robots who value destruction more than their own families.

Paradoxically, small numbers of Muslims in a free society seem to do fine, as long as they don't become numerous enough to provide political cover for the hardline, purist elements.

Yes, I think about these people—along with the born-singers and musicians who have had the misfortune to be born into the Muslim world.

What a terrible, terrible waste.

And thank you for reposting the story of my experience with Muslim censorship. Over thirty years later, this is still a painful memory for me—and one that I now recognize as far more significant than I did at the time.

I can identify with the thing about drawing faces, Fineliving. To this day, my most common doodle when I'm on the phone or let my mind wander is human faces. My most frequent doodle is a woman in profile with long hair—an image that would be considered Haram on many levels.

I think this is true of many artists, though—human faces are what we find most interesting.

I know what you mean—I'm always behind...

Bosch Fawstin is the creator of the Anti-Jihad strip "The Infidel". The framing story is semi-autobiographical, featuring an apostate Muslim artist and his brother, and their very different reactions to 9/11.

The artist creates a strip featuring the Anti-Jihad super hero Pigman, who battles his nemesis, SuperJihad. The artist's own brother re-embraces Islam, becoming far more devout...

There have been several articles here at JW about Bosch Fawstin's work. Here is one of the most recent ones:

"An artistic response to the atrocity of 9/11"

http://www.jihadwatch.org/2011/05/i-recently-released-the-first.html

He also posts here from time to time, often linking to his latest Anti-Jihad work. His work is very powerful. He is also *very* prolific—something I wish I could say for myself.

Larry wrote:

Me too, Larry. And Jihadists have made it clear that they mean to go after other great monuments and works of art, including the pyramids and the Eiffel Tower.

I hadn't realized that you were an artist. Do you do any specifically Anti-Jihad work?

Of course, I realize that *all* art, by its very nature, is created in defiance of the Jihad—whether this is something the artists specifically intend or not.

Burning and Looting

This morning I woke up in a curfew;
O God, I was a prisoner, too - yeah!
Could not recognize the faces standing over me;
They were all dressed in uniforms of brutality. Eh!

How many rivers do we have to cross,
Before we can talk to the boss? Eh!
All that we got, it seems we have lost;
We must have really paid the cost.

(That's why we gonna be)
Burnin' and a-lootin' tonight;
(Say we gonna burn and loot)
Burnin' and a-lootin' tonight;
(One more thing)
Burnin' all pollution tonight;
(Oh, yeah, yeah)
Burnin' all illusion tonight.

Oh, stop them!...
