I really respect RS's scholarship and I really enjoy his witty writing style, but again I must object to his self-defeating loose usage of the terms "leftist" or liberal." Neither he nor anyone else I see posting here bothers to define those terms. To the extent I can find a definition it appears to be "anyone who fails to oppose Islamic ideology." To then ridicule leftists and liberals because they don't oppose Islamic ideology is a nonsensical tautological argument.

The war against Islamic ideology is not a left vs right struggle. Nor is it a religious one. It is based upon the furtherance of modern western civilization values including justice for men and women of all faiths and creeds under the law. Using labels only serves to alienate many ordinary
citizens who might otherwise lend RS a more attentive ear. It's not necessary, much less helpful, to win the struggle against the spread of Islamic ideology to take a left or right political position. Moreover, it's especially unhelpful to allow yourself to be identified with controversial media whores like Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh.

I would encourage RS to soften the rhetoric ridiculing "leftists" and "liberals". I think it's bad strategy and one needs to think strategically in order to prevail against Islamic ideology. It does'nt require one to compromise his values.

The overall problem is relatively simple to comprehend:

1. Most people in the West continue to be blind to the evils and dangers of Islam.

2. "Most people" includes all types of people -- including the majority of Conservatives as well as many who don't identify themselves as any particular party and aren't very active in politics.

3. Nevertheless, while many non-Leftists continue to be blind to the evils and dangers of Islam, it does seem that Leftists more often go the extra mile and show more positive support for, and defense, of Muslims. Part of this is due to the fact that Leftists tend to have in their subculture stronger anti-Western feelings and attitudes, nursing a more profound and darker self-criticism of their own civilization's "shameful past", than do non-Leftists (this anti-Western pathos often gaining extra juiciness when it's expressed as anti-Americanism).

So, in a simple nutshell: Yes, non-Leftists of the West continue to be blind to the evils and dangers of Islam; but Leftists tend to be worse in this regard.

You have done exactly what I said was tautological. You defined leftists/liberals solely with respect to their attitudes towards Islamic ideology... and then proceed to slam leftists/liberals because they don't oppose Islamic ideology. If you can't see that this is tautological then, quite frankly, you are dumb as well as ignorant.

@Lemonlime - I agree with your propositions #1 and 2, but you also fail to define leftist/liberal so, in answer to your question, no, it is not at all clear that leftist/liberals as a group have attitudes towards Islamic ideology different than conservatives do.

One definition of "liberal" as it applies to politics is:
Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry.

It would no doubt come as a surprise to may JW readers that many liberals/leftists would characterize the NYT along with a lot other big money owned MSM as conservative even though JW readers willy nilly ridicule the MSM as leftist. These labels are not very reliable in identifying the attitudes of people towards any one particular social issue. Much like Einstein's theory of relativity, accurate placement on the political spectrum depends much on the location and movement of the observer. Attitudes towards various social issues such as abortion, tax reform, gay marriage, death penalty, immigration, distribution of wealth, are often used to define who is liberal and who is conservative, but the issue of opposition to the Islamic ideology is not yet so well defined as to lend itself for easy placement on the political spectrum.

Aside from pointing out the tautological reasoning of the left bashers here, I believe to ridicule all leftists and liberals alienates a lot of people who may think of themselves as liberal because of their views on more well defined issues. It is unnecessary to make the struggle against the spread of Islam a left vs right issue (or a religious one). Not only that, by allowing oneself to be identified as on the extreme right along with controversial ideologues like Limbaugh or Beck one tends to lose credibility with a lot of intelligent people who might otherwise listen more carefully to the arguments against
Islamic ideology especially as it concerns mideast politics.

Accordingly, one's attitudes towards Islamic ideology defines neither the liberal or conservative political mindset.
One's attitude towards Islamic ideology should be based upon whether one accepts the inherent values of the ideology and the more those values are exposed the more rational ethical people along the entirety of the political spectrum will come to reject it. Those who don't reject it are not necessarily liberals, they 're just not enlightened. Yet.
