Play Station and IKEA: Latest to Offend Muslims

Play Station and IKEA are among the latest non-Muslim entities to offend Muslims. First, “a [Saudi] citizen was shocked when he bought an electronic Play Station game and found a stage that insults the Noble Koran,” claiming that “the game targets the Koran, specifically by opening fire on it.” The man lamented: “We are tired of saying ‘Who will take responsibility for this?’” and “expressed his astonishment that the game continues to be sold on our markets, and the ease with which our children can get it.” Elsewhere in the Arabian Peninsula, in the United Arab Emirates, Muslims are “angry,” “shocked,” and “wounded” because IKEA is producing a wine carrier under the name “Omar”—which Muslims associate with the second “rightly guided” caliph.

Those damn islamophobic videogames and... wine... carriers!.

Did Jack Thompson convert to Islam?

Do they offend themselves any time they might entertain the the thought that they are only a mere human?

(Mental puzzle for bored folks.)

This Islam thing would be so funny if it were not so dangerous. The whole religion is so baseless that anything and everything is against Islam. Not one muslim has any solid understanding of his religion and he/she can not defend it in a civilized manner with logic. They come up with all these absurdities. The whole idealogy should be so easy to refute but it is not, because they will not talk to you. They just want to kill you. What a menace to humanity this ISLAM is and SHAME on those ignorant liberal defenders of ISLAM=EVIL.

Oh, good grief. Who even knows what this is? Some "first person shooter" game where one of the targets is carrying a book? Who the hell knows—from the description, it doesn't sound as though it has anything to do with Muslims at all...

Here's the OMAR wine shelf:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30069762/

Actually, there is a whole line of OMAR shelving for kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms. Most of them have nothing whatsoever to do with wine. Here's one:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00069768/

IKEA has a series of product lines, including BILLY and IVAR. Most of the names are, unsurprisingly, Scandinavian.

There's a whole Wikipedia entry on IKEA product names:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IKEA#Product_names

The entry includes this paragraph:

Some of IKEA's Swedish product names have amusing or unfortunate connotations in other languages, sometimes resulting in the names being withdrawn in certain countries. Notable examples for English include the "Jerker" desk, "Fukta" plant spray, "Fartfull" workbench, and "Lyckhem" (meaning bliss). Similar blunders happen with other multinational companies.
..........................................

Of course, English-speaking budget-buyers just have a snicker at names like this—they don't feel "offended".

Wherever the OMAR name comes from, it *is not* a reference to the vile second Caliph of Islam.

Muslims always think everything is about them—and are willing to take violent offense over these imaginary "slights" at any moment.

Yeah sure, the second guided caliph the murderer. Of course they will be offended. They are offended when we talk about the main murderer and rapist and pedophile, Mo/allah. Morons, they are always in the "offended" mode!!

Q: ‘Who will take responsibility for this?’
A: You take responsibility for your own anger, primitive.

Muslims have a love-hate relationship with Sony's PlayStation.
CNet News Oct 18th 2008

The initial release of the video game "LittleBigPlanet" for Sony's PlayStation 3 was recalled after a reviewer discovered quotes from the Koran embedded in a musical track. The music for "LittleBigPlanet" was licensed by the Briish game developer from a record label. While the Koran doesn't explicitly forbid quotes being used along with music, some muslims find this combination offensive.

Pretty interesting. I seem to remember that the Omar moniker used to be pretty standard in the IKEA catalogue to name all manner of furniture with, like shelving units, etc. (yeah, I am guilty of it, so shoot me :-)

Quite funny that it would turn out to be offensive now. You might start wondering if this isn't a deliberate exercise in islamophobically rubbing Muslims up the wrong way (!)

This has to be a global IKEA conspiracy, surely (!)

Don't these muslims read the Bible?
Omar was the son of Eliphaz and grandson of Esau.

Omar bathroom gadgets? Does that include TP holders and cleaning brushes? You know, Umar never cleaned a bathroom in his life, and you know what pebbles and sand are for...What an insult to Umar...'Omar toilet brushes', $3.95 American...it's almost to much to bear...

Why are these petulant children in the UAE all upset about a wine cart anyway? Alcohol is haram, afterall.

Hypocrites!

IKEA's "Omar" wine is probably named after Egypt's famous Omar Khayyam Cabernet. But those ignorant Arabs probably never heard of it. I've had it and it is quite good, probably made by Copts. Screw those dumb Moslems/Arabs if they can't share a glass.

Omar Khayyam:

The terrorism, beheadings, suicide-bombers, FGM, homophobia, misogyny, and pedophilia by muslims is OFFENSIVE to the 6'000'000'000 Humans on Earth that DON'T follow their death-cult .

Do they see any mass-riots or bounties put on the heads of Imam's or muslim businesses?????

NO, it's the 1'000'000'000 inbred savages that bitch and whine every day to the point that people are sick of the this Jihad crap for allah and their pedophilie prophet.

Muslims now know that " Terrorism works, so we don't have to"
Terrorism threats in canada has out Governemnts and Corporations bowing to this islamic supreamacy knuckle-dragging Brown-Shirts that have run many Welfare and Insurance scams.
palestine House in Mississauga Ontario was nailed last year for smuggling in 300 pro-Shariah Hamas-friendly illegals to bilk Welfare as they file for Citizenship papers by their Muslim Lawyers even after they fled canada back to Palestine or any other islamic hell-hole they crawled out of.

You would think that the femiNazi's would be outraged that their muslim sisters are baby-machines to pump-out Jihad-Joe's for allah's Terrorism in canada in the future. But NOOOOOOOOoooooo, the leftists and Liberals have a friend in the islamists because they all have comtempt for freedom and Liberty. They also hate the West and the jews, and this is why I think the Rosie, Ellen and Anderson Cooper will rue the day they stood beside the pro-Shariah goons because they will be the first ones beheaded as useful-idiots exploited by the Muslim Brotherhood in the USA.

The good news is that there will be 3 less idiots in the USA , 4 if they go after Michael Moore .

I can dream can't I ?

************************************************************
BTW
Cooper produced a DVD about war-Zones, he also was used as a dupe by the pro-hamas propaganda wing to take him on a tour of a Staged-Ghetto in Gaza where bogus destruction of buildings fooled him into believing they were bombed by the IDF Air Force planes.
In canada , 'Queer's For Palestine' is a group too stupid to know what waits for them once the islamists get power, they are also too stupid to see that not one of the 57 OIC's allow a PRIDE-Parade unless it's a parade of gays to the nooses in Iran or Saudi Arabia.

They can demand whatever they want. However, they have no right to expect us to take them seriously.

At some point we should try laughing at them. Laughter is the one thing that they can do nothing about. It is their own actions that brings on this ridiculous situation. They hate it because it shows them what their own hate looks like.

That is how to deal with this cult: not by killing, but with laughter, mockery, and love.

Now this is getting f**king stupid... pardon my Arabic. Who do these inbreds think they are? I want to tell them to grow up before a real grown-up comes along and slaps them hard.
I don't care and nobody else should care if it offends your superstitious OCDs, you lobotomized idiots! Grab your unholy book and stick it up your fat, hairy butts!

Attention, Muslims! The infidels have been deceiving you! On the final step of the production of any infidel device, a tiny piece of pork skin in placed in a secret place that you won't find! You are now unclean!

Bwahahahaha!

Bwahahahaha!

Dr. Infidel says -"Stop the jihad or we will mess with your minds!"

IKEA jihad? D'ya think?

Well, I'll be damned, when I grew up, it was always, ya know, "omar the tentmaker" (been awhile since I heard that commonly used), who'da thought he was only moonlighting as a tentmaker?

"the Noble Koran...."

You mean there's another one! Here I thought there was only one Koran, and it's far from noble and almost impossible to insult. I'd like to see a copy of this "noble" one.

When are we going to get the words "Tough Shit" back into our vocabulary?

Good! Keep it up!

So now it is Playstation they have a problem with.
What a joyless, soulless people.
But then I hear that they also don't like Bugs Bunny or the
Starbucks logo either.
The late Ayatollah Khomenni said that there was no such thing as having fun in Islam.
He was right.

IKEA should develop a line of OMAR URINAL and DOUCHE !

isn't it obvious what is happening here? the sheik wanted an ikea bedroom range for child brides that combined the latest childhood comforts with practical conjugal provision for the husband.

when ikea refused to be culturaly sensitive there was a reason to lambast it found, and being completely teneous wasn't a problem as ignorant followers of peace are easily whipped up into a murderous frenzy.

this is not a conspiracy theory it's true!

Hi Tours. It looks like you and I were thinking along the same lines (sort of)

Rather than naming the rack after a vintage of Cabernet I think it may have been named for Omar Khayyám himself. He was an 11th Century Persian 'Renaissance Man' who was a poet, mathematician and Astronomer.

He would probably be unknown in the West except for Edward FitzGerald's wonderful translation of his poetry under the title Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.

Several of the rubaiyat (quatrains) are about drinking wine which may come as a surprise to Jihad Watchers who know alcohol is not permissible for a Muslim.

For example, the following quattrain (Fitzgerald's trans.):

Here with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough,
A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse - and Thou
Beside me singing in the Wilderness -
And Wilderness is Paradise enow.

or

And lately, by the Tavern Door agape,
Came stealing through the Dusk an Angel Shape
Bearing a Vessel on his Shoulder; and
He bid me taste of it ; and 'twas - the Grape !

or

And David's Lips are lock't; but in divine
High piping Pehleví, with "Wine! Wine! Wine!
Red Wine!" - the Nightingale cries to the Rose
That yellow Cheek of hers to incarnadine.

I have wondered at the content of the Rubayat since I came across it in the early 1970's. It seemed to me that the prohibition against alcohol within Islam must be of a later 'vintage' than we think which suggested that the content of the Qur'an was evolving even as late as the 11th century.

If this was not the case then the only other explanation I could come up with was that the prohibition on alcohol was not enforced equally within the Muslim Empire. If it was enforced equally, then the chances of the poem's survival, let alone the author's, would have been slim.

That Khayyám was a Muslim can't be in too much doubt for the following quatrain is part of the Rubayat:

The mighty Mahmud, the victorious Lord,
That all the misbelieving and black Horde
Of Fears and Sorrows that infest the Soul
Scatter and slays with his enchanted Sword.

So, if Khayyám was a Muslim, why is he writing about drinking wine and in doing so why does he not mention that it is forbidden? Also, the Rubaiyat is a love poem, it is spoken to a women. One of the greatest lines of the poem "Ah love could thou and I with fate conspire" was assigned one of the most beautiful paintings for the Fitzgerald translation. An example of the painting can be found here:

http://www.google.ca/imgres?start=181&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&rlz=1C1NNVC_enCA477CA477&biw=1024&bih=608&tbm=isch&tbnid=jrixUvM1ehu3xM:&imgrefurl=http://elelixirdelavida.tumblr.com/&docid=8w1Wrekav_HySM&imgurl=http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lt7f5g7OcY1qg1g42o1_500.jpg&w=500&h=686&ei=bz0AUMzdH4Xa6wHozuDJBw&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=356&sig=117818544612648614426&page=8&tbnh=151&tbnw=110&ndsp=25&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:181,i:15&tx=54&ty=70

If drinking was unIslamic, how did Omar Khayyám expect to get to first base with his intended one? It seems to me that the Medieval Muslims did not put the same emphasis on alcohol prohibition as do the modern day nut bars of that religion. It is also interesting that Omar in mentioning the prophet of Islam (as quoted above) didn't add the formulaic "Peace be upon him." It is also noteworthy that he references a tavern, a drinking place, in the poem. That suggests that in 11th century Persia, there were pubs!

For information on the poem, see the following article:

http://www.victorianweb.org/authors/fitzgerald/rubaiyat.html

Peter, the "Prophet" and his "companions" were *hardly* "moderates".

But Islam has indeed been unevenly enforced throughout its history.

You can still find cocktail bars in Cairo, Istanbul, and Jakarta—although perhaps not for much longer.

Some pious Muslims have tried to claim that all of Omar Khayyám's work featuring wine, women, and song is symbolic, and should not be read literally.

But this is obviously ridiculous. Not only is his work too true to life to be entirely imaginary, but why would an orthodox Muslim use things that were obviously Haram in such an open manner?

After all, it's not as though he is placing these events in "Paradise". He also writes about having a hangover, which is completely Haram in any Islamic context.

The fact is, Khayyám is viewed in radically different ways—many pious Muslims consider him an apostate, while many hopeful Westerners take his existence to mean that Islam really can't be all that bad.

He wrote: "Enjoy wine and women and don't be afraid, Allah has compassion"—which seems to imply that he realized that orthodox Islam frowns on such matters. And, of course, many devout Muslims would disagree with him rather pointedly about Allah having compassion for such lapses.

He was unorthodox in other ways—he didn't believe daily life was strictly controlled by Allah, nor did he believe in Judgment Day; in fact, much of what he wrote leads one to conclude that he didn't believe in an afterlife at all—things that would get him killed as an apostate in many parts of Dar-al-Islam today.

On the other hand, he also wrote fairly orthodox sermons.

And even though he was—by the standards of his time and place, at least—a fairly rigorous scholar, he also believed that one only came to know God through intuition, not reason.

Many have considered him Sufi. Some have blamed the "blasphemous" aspects of his poetry on poor translations by Fitzgerald. (sound familiar?)

And of course, one can never assume that a writer-especially a poet-is always writing entirely from his own point of view.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, few Persians had read his work until Fitzgerald's translation popularized his work in the West.

So—Khayyám may have considered himself a Muslim, but he was certainly not an entirely orthodox one.

Here's the staunchly Anti-Jihad New English Review on Omar Khayyám:

http://www.newenglishreview.org/Norman_Berdichevsky/Omar_Khayyam%27s_Rubaiyat_-_an_Antidote_for_Islamic_Fundamentalism/

I consider this take overly optimistic, but it is interesting.

Thanx for the information and thoughts G.I. Appreciated. Also, thanks for the link to the Bedishevsky article. A good read and hopefully not as optimistic as you think.

You pointed out that "many pious Muslims consider him an apostate, while many hopeful Westerners take his existence to mean that Islam really can't be all that bad."

That is a scary thought. I love the Rubaiyat but I can't imagine judging the moral value of a religion based on a love poem of one of its adherents.

The poem does bring into question however, some of what we understand of Islamic doctrine. It should not have survived almost 1000 years in the custodianship of Muslim hands. It should have been destroyed in the same way the Buddhas in Afghanistan were destroyed. Yet it wasn't and even more interesting, it survived in a way that got it into the hands of the one man most suited to not only ensure its survival but also to ensure its dissemination to the world. What concept in Islam protected this poem?

I think we sometimes don't quite properly reason out what we have learned about Islam. Let me give you an example. We consistently say that the Muslims will use taqiyyas to further their goals and yet that very thing is what they eschew regarding peace with Israel.

Why are Hamas and the PA not lying through their eye teeth to create a Palestinian state knowing full well that in a few years after the formation of that state they can attack Israel with the help of Egypt and other Muslim states in the region? Hell, forget taqiyya, the concept of hudna, as we understand the term, should induce them to sign any peace treaty the International Community request.

They have nothing to lose and everything to gain from such a deceptive approach but they eschew it. Why? I think the answer is that there is a bit more to taqiyya and hudna than we think and that bit more is what is stopping them from implementing such a grand deception.

In a similar fashion, there may be something about Islamic doctrine or Islamic history that we aren't taking into consideration with respect to the survival of the Rubaiyat.

Anyway, enough soap-boxing, have a nice weekend G.I. Talk to yah soon.
