The target practice story I knew of was that Napoleon did it before a battle but it's been handily debunked because there are images of it without a nose before Napoleon entered Egypt.

Also he was, unlike todays Salafists, an Egyptophile and would never have countenanced the destruction of Egyptian artifacts for any reason.

My understanding is that it was blasted off by Sayim al- Dahr, a muslim shiek in the late 14th century because "he was offended by it's life like appearance" and because the indiginous people would leave offerings to it as it was associated with the fertility of the Nile and with the fertility of women.

Of course this is now a point of contention because muslim's don't want people to know a muslim did it for islamic reasons.

Destroying an enemies past is a feature of conquest. The Russians and Germans did it repeatedly to Poland even before WWII. Destroying and dragging off the contents of libraries and cultural artifacts. This is done to destroy the "idea" of the country itself.

I'm not shocked at this since I posted a comment just last week about the Pyramids being destroyed by these savages just by what the Taliban did .

First of all, the pyramids have already been destroyed to a certain extent. They were originally faced with triangular blocks of stone so that they were smooth -- true pyramids --not notched like at present. Almost all of that facing stone was removed centuries ago for use elsewhere. Also they were broken into and looted of their treasures long, long ago -- usually not too long after the pharaoh's burial within them.
They'd be pretty hard to destroy, being basically solid stone. More likely the Islamicist will start with the later Egyptian temples, defacing and removing their carvings, writings, and art-work. Sad to think that the temples that were relocated at tremendous expense to save them from being flooded by the Aswan reservoir may now be razed by these savages.
Still, if they really want to destroy the pyramids, it could be done. I suggest they make a deal with Iran, allowing the Iranians to use them for their first nuclear tests. Or, if they're in hurry, they could just buy a couple of Pakistani nukes, and use those. The fall-out might claim a million or so Cairo-ites, but hey, if that happens, it's only in accordance with Allah's will

dhimmiwit, I use Bill Warner as my professor of Islamic history. He has studied it for decades with others of like concerns. Of course there are others. But I use Bill Warner in such matters.

Think what your more "enthusiastic" Muslims would do to the religious art treasures of Europe if they ever get the chance. And then there is the literature that would be banned, starting, very possibly, with Dante since he put Mohammed in Hell (where the SOB belongs if there is a Hell).
