segregated facilities, hmmmmm, reminds me of segration laws that were struck down in the 60's. The good old USA is going backwards in time. I guess in the future, burkas will become manditory along with clitorectomies if women want to swim in San Diego!

If you "can't" swim-- dig that, the article says "can't" not "won't"-build your own. Also, the article says both that the pool is closing early and that this is after hours. Which is it? Our YMCA offers party rentals after hours on weekends, so if this group wants to rent the YMCA pool after hours, that is kosher, BUT... is the YMCA allowed to discriminate in employment by sending male lifeguards home? Would the article be so positive if it were some other group that wanted only male life guards?

There used to be actual discrimination against a group of people who wanted to swim and play golf at country clubs but were not welcome, so they built their own.
They, too were immigrants, and many of them came to America with nothing. When they wanted to swim they built Jewish Country Clubs, Jewish Community Centers, and Jewish summer camps.

The other sad part of the story is the "C" in YMCA. Not only are they NOT using this women only swim time as a chance to spread the Gospel, they would be horrified if someone even suggested it. That would be totally opposite of their modern mission.

Says it all, really. Managed to be in the water...somehow...in her home country but can't do it in ours without making a fuss. I bet the blokes didn't leave the scene when the girls went into the water in Eritrea.

Do these muslim women know what the C in YMCA stands for? Surely allah would disapprove of them swimming in the YMCA pool. Haram! Haram!

And we thought segregation in the United States ended fifty years ago. Sharia law is worming its way into everything.

CAIR probably is going to sue the YMCA for discriminating against Muslims for not calling themselves the YMMA.

I for one would like to see all Muslims (apart from ex-Muslims who have contributed to counterjihad e.g Wafa Sultan etc) kicked out of Western countries. If they want to swim free from infidels, they can and swim in the Red Sea or Persian Gulf or whatever. Come to think of it, most of them need a swim, its the closest they'll get to having a wash!

Maybe we could get the local naturists club to request a separate swim time. Wonder if the YMCA would accomodate them?

We had an insane Human Rights ruling in Toronto canada for a WMCA several years back.

The Human Rights Commission ordered the YMCA to be open to non-males and non-Christians , and, to have change rooms for both genders .
OK, lets see, the Young Men's Christian Assoc was now ordered to embrace jewish people and any female even if they are atheists.
Meanwhile there were Young Men's Hebrew Assoc and YWCA's and other public swim pools and rec centre's those people could go to.
But NOOOOOOOOO, lets get our name in the Newspapers and on TV to brag to our friends that we got the rules changed and confronted those intolerant bigot fascists trying to push their views on people.

Lets just sit back and see if the Muslims bend over backwards when lesbians or gay males want to use the pools at the same time as the intolerant bigotted muslims want special Rights and a segregated Swim schedule for muslim-only swimmers.

The YMCA has carried out the broadest and most ecumenical policies for a long time. (I belong to the oldest in Boston.)
And that is what makes it what it has become, growth from its origins.
Now, we have a cowardly concession to an element that has no appreciation for assimilation, let alone ecumenism.
It's a disgraceful retreat.

By way of antidote to this story, I encourage people to pick up Ayaan Hirsi Ali's "Infidel" and read the chapter where she describes the slow process of being 'deprogrammed' from Islam which took place while she was in Holland. She was doing some of it herself - she was already inclining that way - but she got a good solid push along from a bunch of non-Muslim Ethiopian girls. They poked fun and they laughed and they argued with her; and after they had joshed her into shedding her Slave Rag, and after they had persuaded her to get a bicycle and wear pants, they moved on to Shock Treatment: they took her to the pool.

"I began having a huge amount of fun. Every day the [non-Muslim] Ethiopian girls found something to do. One day they asked me, "Do you want to swim?"

"I said, "I can't. I'll drown". But they said, 'Rubbish' and I could borrow a swimsuit at the pool.

"So, less than a month after I first arrived in Europe, I found myself in an ill-fitting swimsuit, in front of a crowd of other asylum seekers, women and men.

"I cringed. I wasn't ready for this. Even while I was splashing in the pool I thought about Allah and the angels looking down at me. But when I looked around, none of the men was even noticing me. Every so often a man would look at me, but I in no way had the impression that because of me, any of them would end up in Hell or drowned at the bottom of the pool.

"The tall Bosnians, and the Zaireans, with their wonderful torsos; I found myself noticing them, too. But I was not going into any kind of fit, either".

"I kept coming back to it, arguing with myself, trying to justify what I was doing. I was supposed to cover myself because I was so beguiling that I would lead men astray; even the allure of perfume or high heels under a black hidjab could supposedly cause an intolerable chaos of desire.
