Silence of Egypt's President Speaks Volumes

Here's a different angle on Egypt's new Muslim Brotherhood president: it's not so much what Muhammad Morsi has said, but what he hasn't said. Considering all the anti-infidel talk emanating from those around him -- whether calls to destroy Egypt's pagan pyramids, calls to wage an all-out jihad against Israel, or calls to reimpose jizya on Egypt's Christian Copts -- not only has Morsi not condemned such talk, he hasn't even tried to distance himself from it. Such silence speaks for itself.

"In Egypt, Morsi's silence speaks volumes," by Joel Brinkley for the Chicago Tribune, July 17:

Mohammed Morsi has been Egypt's president for less than a month, and already senior clerics in his country and around the Islamic world are loudly calling for the demolition of the pyramids, Egypt's most important tourist attraction and among the Seven Wonders of the World.

Saudi Sheik Ali bin Said al-Rabi'i called them heinous "symbols of paganism." In recent days, similar calls have been echoing through Egypt and the region, including one from a Bahraini sheik who urged Morsi to "destroy the pyramids and accomplish what the Amr bin al-As could not." He was referring to the Prophet Muhammad's companion who conquered Egypt in the seventh century but didn't have the technological wherewithal to accomplish the task.

None of this should be too surprising. Islamic extremists are now destroying 15th century tombs in Timbuktu, world heritage sites, because they are considered "idolatrous." And remember in 2001, when the Taliban fired heavy artillery at two huge Buddha statutes carved into a rock face about 1,700 years ago. Taliban leader Mullah Omar had issued an edict against un-Islamic graven images. Numerous other examples exist, contemporary and ancient.

What's surprising is that Morsi has had nothing to say about this, not a word. Neither has he said anything about numerous "freelance" efforts to enforce other elements of Shariah law across Egypt, even though his new government hasn't said that's his plan.

Well, his extremist allies are already trying to enforce an ancient Koranic commandment that directs Islamists to collect a tax called the jizya from Coptic Christians and other "non-believers." Ahmed Imran, who was a Salafist-party candidate for office, recently declared that "Copts are obligated to pay the jizya." And as Raymond Ibrahim, an Egyptian-American author and columnist of Coptic ancestry, recently wrote: "Increasing numbers of attacks on Christians in Egypt revolve around extorting jizya."

The Koran (9/29) declares: "Fight those who do not believe in Allah" until "they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled." Once again, Morsi has said nothing about this.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with Morsi on Saturday but didn't talk about these problems. The State Department sees the unresolved power struggle between Morsi and the Egyptian military as the most important issue right now.

Not surprisingly, Clinton did manage to mention the importance of Egypt's peace treaty with Israel. But I wonder if she knew that a few days earlier Mohammed Badi, the head of the Muslim Brotherhood, Morsi's own political party, loudly proclaimed during his weekly sermon that it's the duty of "every Muslim to strive to save Jerusalem from the hands of the rapists and to cleanse Palestine from the clutches of the occupation."

Once again, Morsi had nothing to say.

In Afghanistan this month, a woman accused of adultery crouched in the dirt as a friend handed her husband an AK-47 assault rifle. He shot her multiple times, continuing to fire even after she collapsed, dead, as about 150 men stood on a nearby hillside, applauding. He then posted a video of the repulsive event for the world to see. The Afghan government did nothing.

What does this have to do with Egypt? In Afghanistan, Pakistan and some other states, extremists like the man who shot his wife are free to carry out "justice" as they see fit because the government looks aside. That seems to be the way Egypt is heading, too.

Already, the Washington Post reported, Islamic extremists who have fought in Afghanistan and Pakistan are setting up militant training camps in the Sinai, obviously up to no good, while the government does nothing.

As Ibrahim told me, "People are beginning to connect the dots. Morsi just became president, and we're already seeing changes."

Speaking at Muslim Brotherhood headquarters, Morsi said: "The second Muslim conqueror of Egypt will be Mohammed Morsi," the online newspaper El Bashayer reported. "And history will record it." Morsi has not refuted that report.

So, will extremists actually blow up the pyramids? After the Bahraini sheik's remarks went viral, he improbably denied making them. But Egyptian media reports say Salafist party officials want Egypt's new constitution to demand "the demolition of the Pyramids of Giza as they represent a symbol of unbelief." Already, Abdel Moneim al-Shahat, the Salafist-party spokesman, is advocating at least covering them with wax so all anyone will see "is a big blob," as Ibrahim put it.

But under the hot desert sun, the wax would melt in no time, possibly bringing calls for more extreme measures. If and when that happens, will Morsi, once again, simply look away?

The Silence of the Sphyx It seems Mohamed Morsi is to become the new Caliph.

Anything belonging to the world's cultural heritage should be protected in the same way that countries who belong to organizations, such as NATO, are protected; that is, an attack upon one is an attack upon all the members.

The UN should declare that an attack on the Pyramids would be considered an attack on us all as these artifacts are considered to be part of the world's heritage and are held in common.

Islamic clowns!

Why not destroy the pyramids, Egypt's most important source of money, other than simple hand-outs from the United States and Europe?

Muslim theologians would far rather accept handouts, than be economically productive. Islam is naturally socialist, preferring for everyone to be poor and ignorant, rather than tempted to live as self-aware individuals.

I have no objection to Egypt's destroying its pyramids, as long as the US discontinues its economic support of Egypt. I'm afraid Muslims will have to experience the logical consequences of their religion before there is even a chance they will begin to live as human beings.

The Silence of the Sphynx

"it's not so much what Muhammad Morsi has said, but what he hasn't said." That sounds rather Catholic of you with the idea of sins of commission & sins of omission :-)

It looks like the US has supported replacing a secular dictator with a theocratic dictator (similar to what happened in Iraq). It's not obvious such a change is in the best interest of the US, its allies, or even the majority of the Egyptian people.

I'm certain that Mursi isn't foolish enough to implement the destruction of the pyramids, as an onset decree, by the new president of Egypt. There are too many other pressing political issues which need to be addressed.Other than the obvious economic ones, the destruction of the pyramids, would create negative global reactions not in his or The Muslim Brotherhood's best political interests at
this point in time. Mursi has not yet amassed absolute power that comes from absolute confidence in him by the people. And bymaking the right politcal moves. In my oppinion, those moves, do not include the destruction of egypt's pyramids

So, it's come to this. The heritage of ancient Egypt is now dependent on people like Morsi, who is himself a forever deeply confused, profoundly inferior and nefarious human being. Ancient Egypt's some 30 dynasties deserved far better than this. But then expecting "better" wherever and whenever Islam is in the mix is never a winning bet.

Islam destroys far more than it builds. It destroys things aplenty and, far worse, the human spirit, which it either crushes completely (and its mortal complement) or puts in a spiritual straitjacket. Time by now most everyone gets this. Sadly, not there yet.

Talking about Egypt we have:

"Silence of Egypt's President Speaks Volumes"
I agree. It's a bit like Shakespeare's to "Damn with faint praise".
I feel an oxymoron coming on: "A deafening silence".

Let Morsi do what he wants. He was duly elected.

Let them destroy their heritage if they can. They will become a fourth world nation if they do, and nobody will ever bother them again.

If Fundamentalist Islam must fester in a country, let them fester there. They have been through several generations of people who have tried to help them develop, and they're turning their backs on all that.

So why bother? Leave them alone and let them TRY to find someone that will be willing to fund growth there. They have salted that field for at least a generation or more.

Last I heard, almost half the sites in Timbuktu have been destroyed. The Bamiyan Buddhas have been destroyed, and even calls to rebuild them have been denied by Afghanistan's supposedly "moderate" government. This is probably just as well—the Taliban will be back in power there soon, and would likely just blow them up again.

In the Maldives, "Islamists" have destroyed all evidence of that island nation's Buddhist past.

Is there any reason to believe the Muslim Brotherhood won't do it? Or that they won't begin destroying all that "Jahilyya"?

(I address American jihadwatchers in particular)

It appears that Mr Joel Brinkley has been doing his homework.

He has been reading - with some intelligent attention, it appears - Mr Raymond Ibrahim, at least.

This is an excellent article.

Email Mr Brinkley and thank him for writing it.

And contact the Chicago Tribune and express your appreciation to the editor/s, for *publishing* it.

Let them know that there are potential Customers out there, and therefore, potential Subscribers and Advertisers, who may increase in number, should more of Mr Brinkley's writing see the light of day in the Tribune.

Send them some Love Mail, just in case they are copping flak from Mohammedans because of this article.

I dunno. In that the pyramids are non-representational, they are arguably "Islamic". However, other monuments are likely doomed.

Abu-Simbal contains multiple images of a diefied human as well as several "idols". To top that off, it was saved from the rising waters of the Aswan High Dam by none other than "the Great Satan", the USA.

Yeah, its days are numbered.

Wherever Islam goes to, civilisation and culture leave. It's as simple as that. The whole Middle East was once full of great cultures, Mesopotamia, Persia, Carthage. As soon as Islam arrived culture vanished in the haze. Today there is only one civilised country in the MidEast, that's Israel. That's the country the mahoundians want to destroy, they can't live with a great civilisation next to them. Islam is this planet's cancer, we've got to get rid of it.

The Pyramids of Giza don't belong to NATO you fucking fool. Who gave the UN the right to dictate to a sovereign country what they can and can't do to their own property???

And by the way if you Tulley believe that President Mohamed Morsi would allow the pyramids of Giza to be destroyed then you Tulley are a lunatic. Not only do the pyramids represent the very first human civilization, they're tombs not idols! Destroying a grave is a major sin in Islam. This article has already been proven to be nothing more than pure Bullshit! (http://thedailynewsegypt.com/2012/07/11/another-hoax-cleric-calls-on-president-morsy-to-destroy-giza-pyramids/)

''Destroying a grave is a major sin in Islam.''

Tell that to the muslim savages in Timbuktu, who have destroyed *muslim* graves, and the moron muslim savages who desecrated war graves in Libya.

'D' clearly doesn't get out much.

'Tulley', I believe Morsi will do it when he feels in a strong enough position. It's what muslims do. When they can. Dementors, destroyers, murderers.

I have to inform that the news about Islamic clerics wanting to destroy pyramids is a hoax, look here:

http://thedailynewsegypt.com/2012/07/11/another-hoax-cleric-calls-on-president-morsy-to-destroy-giza-pyramids/

The parody Twitter account of Al-Mahmoud tweeted the statement on the same day Morsy was announced president of Egypt. The reports are coupled with reports that Salafists are demanding Morsy to enforce the Hijab (veil) on women. While the conservative Muslims in Alexandria were able to win a campaign to cover up a prominent mermaid statue last year, most cases are exceptions rather than the rule.

"The Pyramids of Giza don't belong to NATO you fucking fool."

skevin, they pyramids *are not* safe. Since they were built as tombs whose occupants were due veneration, they are profoundly "un-Islamic".

Never mind that no one in Egypt has practiced this faith for centuries—there were no practicing Buddhists left in Afghanistan, either, and that did no save the Bamiyan Buddhas.

David Dowse wrote, re "D":

By the way? Are you a Muslim?

He is, indeed, David. There have been a number of different posters signing in under "D", but if you click on his name you will find that his TypePad avatar is light blue shot with black—that's the Muslim "D".

You hear this a lot—the idea that it is completely ethical for a nation to destroy great art and archeology, because it is theirs, rather than a legacy of all mankind.

France is currently hovering just below 10% Muslim. If they top the 50% mark at some point, then according to "D" they can blow up the Louvre if they so desire.

What absolute crap. Not only have we seen the destruction of the famous tombs in Timbuktu at the hands of pious Muslims in the past few weeks as Jan points out, but grave desecration is a very common Muslim tactic in general.

Jordanian Muslims infamously used Jewish grave stones to line latrines. Christian graveyards in Europe are increasingly targets for Muslim desecration. And pious Muslims in Libya recently desecrated graves of WWII Allied dead, taking especial delight in destroying Jewish graves.

Here's a grim video of the latter atrocity, as well as more on the grisly phenomenon in general:

Personally I agree that they should be destroyed. I’m a new Canadian Muslim and I see them as idols. Who cares a bout dead fascist slaver god-king kufrs. SMASH THEIR IDOLS! FUCK ANCESTOR WORSHIP! FUCK DECADENCE!

That certainly proves that Muslims have no desire to destroy the pyramids. sarc/off

What about the Timbuktu tombs? Half of these medieval monuments have already been destroyed by the pious Muslim of Ansar Dine. And the Bamiyan Buddhas? Destroyed.

The Salafists have called for the pyramids to be covered in wax as an interim measure. That this would not work well under a north African sun would no doubt lead to calls for more permanent measures.

And the calls are already there—they have been reported in the Arab press. Are *all* of these "hoaxes"?
