Baha'is arrested in Iran -- for being Baha'is

The Islamic Republic of Iran again demonstrates the intolerance at the heart of Sharia. "Baha'i citizens arrested in Iran," from Mohabat News, August 2 (thanks to The Religion of Peace):

Iranian human rights activists report that Baha'is are being arrested in several Iranian cities.

According to Radio Zamaneh, The Society Against Education Discrimination reported on Wednesday that more than 10 Baha'i citizens were arrested in the past day in Esfahan, Shahin Shahr, Villa Shahr and Yazd.

The group also reports that a number of Baha'is have been arrested in Arak.

The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) confirmed that Esfahan Baha'i citizens were arrested, adding that on Tuesday, Esfahan intelligence ministry officials arrested these people at their homes and transferred them to an unknown location.

The report adds that the homes of these citizens were searched and their computers, CDs, books and documents were confiscated.

In the past three weeks, some 20 other Baha'i citizens have been reportedly arrested in Tehran, Shiraz and Mashhad.

The Baha'i faith is not recognized as an official religion in the Islamic Republic constitution and Baha'i citizens face widespread discrimination in Iran in all walks of life.

"Christian nurses poisoned for drinking tea during Ramadan:

Eleven Christian staff nurses at the Civil Hospital in Karachi were allegedly poisoned as punishment for drinking tea in their hostel rooms during the daylight hours of Islam's Ramadan fast"

http://bit.ly/OvRBj9

It's Ramadan month, it's jihad month.

The whole Islam is a religion that is rude and harmful to people. In the whole world there is no peace at all where the Islam rules the law. So what kind of god is Allah that it's making him happy that people are so bad to each other?
Jesus told us:"nobody saw the Father, but when you see Me you see the Father" and He showed us love and told us to do so. A relationship with Him makes us better people and that's not what I see in the country's where people were fighting for "freedom" and after all voted for an Islamic covernment, mening: unfreedom for everybody special for woman and with sharialaws. It's not better than before,it's worse. No freedom at all because of Islamic hate for everybody who isn't moslim.

Eliminating competition is the Islamic way...All will be for Allah, or else...

If the West does not win the war against Islam, a large part of the blame will go to the enemedia for not reporting this sort of incident. Thanks to you, Robert, at least the not-yet-brain-dead crowd knows the truth.

Yet in the West, the baha'i shill for islam

that figures because Baha'u'llah claimed to be the second coming of Isa.

Baha'i are messianic muslims. They are always striving for a New World Order. Also, the root of Multiculturalism (breaking the cross) is the Baha'i faith in Unity in Diversity. The Baha'i are usually right in the middle of your neighborhood Interfaith group helping Christians and Jews 'understand' islam.

Why is it that every time Baha'is are mentioned on JW, you have to pop up like a hell-spawned demon or the proverbial salivating dog of Pavlov and start maligning these people ? We never hear anything from you otherwise.

Baha'is are NOT Muslims, although originally they were a subbranch of Shia Islam. Alí-Muhammad of Shiraz, Iran proclaimed that he was "the Báb", referencing his later claim to the station of Mahdi, the Twelfth Imam of Shi`a Islam. His followers were therefore known as Bábís. As the Báb's teachings spread, which the Islamic clergy saw as a threat, his followers came under increased persecution and torture. The Mahdi concept is significant in that it clearly points to the fact that the Báb was essentially a member of the Shi'ite clergy, and by claiming himself to be the Mahdi, he therefore incurred the wrath of the mainstream Shia clergy, along with the Qajar dynasty, who had granted the Shia clergy considerable privileges.

Bahá'ís see the Báb as the forerunner of the Bahá'í Faith, because the Báb's writings introduced the concept of "He whom God shall make manifest", a Messianic figure whose coming, according to Bahá'ís, was announced in the scriptures of all of the world's great religions, and whom Bahá'u'lláh, the founder of the Bahá'í Faith, claimed to be in 1863.

Although Bahá'u'lláh was an early follower of the Báb, he did not claim his divine status until 1863, and by doing so he caused a rift between him and the successor of the Báb, leading the Báb movement at the time. Throughout the rest of his life Bahá'u'lláh gained the allegiance of most of the Bábís, who came to be known as Bahá'ís. The original Bábist movement with its Shi'ite origins turned into a marginal phenomenon. With the advent of Bahá'u'lláh, the Bahai movement became gradually 'de-islamified'.

Whereas many people believe the Bahai faith to be a syncretic religion, borrowing from many other faiths, such as Judaism, Christianity, Bhuddism,..etc, the Bahai faith has much more in common with Zoroastrianism than any other faith.

If we apply Islamic (Sunni or Shi'ite) logic to Bahai adherents, then a few things are immediately apparent:

1) Bahai's are regarded as both unbelievers by default AND apostates by default, because the Iranian government considers the Bahai faith as the continuation of religious (and therefore heretical) innovation within Shia Islam, initiated by the Báb, and the subsequent de-inslamifying of the movement to the point where it holds no key Islamic concepts. And apostates have to be punished more severely than mere unbelievers !

2) this is in marked contrast to Zoroastrianism. Zoroastrians are unbelievers by default, but they can't be considered as apostates. Simply because the remaining Zoroastrians in Iran today are the direct descendants of the earliest Zoroastrians, particularly those who have never submitted to Islam throughout their history.

Which is why Zoroastrians have their own parliamentary representatives in Iran, alongside Christians and Jews, and can still gather in their own places of worship, whereas a Bahai adherent automatically incurs the wrath of the mullahs and can receive the death penalty for simply being one. (Although all throughout history, Jews, Christians and Zoroastrians have been intermittently persecuted in Iran, and still are to some extent today) And it also explains why Bahai places of worship are destroyed.

Now, I should make a few things clear before anyone starts replying to what I have said on the subject:

1) I am an atheist and not a big fan of religions in general, however I have the common sense to recognize the fact that some religions are simply not deserving of the level of slander and persecution they are subject to, because many of them are infinitely more tolerant than Islamic ideology.

2) Some people really want to deliberately disregard historical contexts to prove their point and to denigrate others for whatever reason they see fit. Intellectual indolence is not the way forward when faced with a threat that concerns us all, it is divisive. It is the exact mirror image of the intellectual dishonesty of the PC/MC cultural relativists who claim that Islam is a religion of peace, disregarding all historical evidence to the contrary.

3) Putting things in context, I am trying to demonstrate the obvious internal logic Islamic ideology clings to, rather than making this an exercise in Islamic apologetics. In other words, in order to dispel Islamic mythology and the mollycoddling attitude of Western do-gooders, one has to be able to think like an Islamic supremacist first. Something which Robert Spencer has successfully demonstrated many times in the past, and we should be thankful for anyone providing us with such insights.

When Robert speaks out in support of Bahais, I sincerely understand why he does so, and I find myself absolutely flabbergasted as to why some people on JW seem to be so short-sighted on this matter, because it is totally uncalled for. Besides, all evidence points to the fact that Baha'is are not Muslims because essentially:

1) they don't reference the Quran
2) they don't adhere to the five pillars of Islam

which are by definition required to be considered Muslim in the first place. Which is what every Muslim understands and any Muslim clergyman will tell you.

I have told you this before. It seems to me you have a fundamental bone to pick with Baha'i adherents that stretches way beyond the merely philosophical and consequently consumes a disproportionate amount of your personal time that could be spent more constructively in many ways.

Grungy you certainly are. You should be proud of it (!)

Are Christians not Messianic Jews?

It's the same idea with the baha'i.

Too bad so sad, the baha'i are evil. they are evil because they work to promote the lie that islam is the progression on from Christianity.

there's that word "Progress"

The messianic muslim baha'i faith is the root of Progressivism

Religion: Baha'i
Monday, July 20, 1931
To the International Congress of Religion at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 went one Ibrahim George Khayru'llah to spread Baha'i in the U. S. Founder Baha'u'llah had died the year before and his son Abdu'1-Baha (servant of Baha) had become Expounder & Promoter. Born in 1844 on the very day when the Bab was making his great prediction, Abdu'1-Baha began expounding and promoting late in life, but under his able leadership the faith gained world following. In 1912 he followed Ibrahim Khayru'llah to the U. S., spoke in churches, synagogs, D. A. R. meetings, visited the late William Jennings Bryan who pontificated: "The Baha'i movement is the only power able to revive the Islamic world." Abdu'1-Baha, however, saw the movement serving a wider world. For Jews it could fulfill Old Testament and Talmudic prophecies; for Christians the visions of the Apocalypse; for Mohammedans the Redeemer, Imam-Mahdi.

Of Wilson, Shoghi Effendi wrote the following:

To. . . the immortal Woodrow Wilson, must be ascribed the unique honor, among the statesmen of any nation, whether of the East or of the West, of having voiced sentiments so akin to the principles animating the Cause of Bahá'u'lláh, and of having more than any other world leader, contributed to the creation of the League of Nations -- achievements which the pen of the Center of God's Covenant acclaimed as signalizing the dawn of the Most Great Peace, whose sun, according to that same pen, must needs arise as the direct consequence of the enforcement of the laws of the Dispensation of Bahá'u'lláh.

Baha'i can rot in hell.

"... Baha'i citizens face widespread discrimination in Iran in all walks of life."

The article repeatedly refers to Baha'i "citizens", yet it's clear that they're not citizens at all, but subjects.

Violence erupts at anti-Islam protest in Sweden
Swedish riot police clash with demonstrators during an anti-Islam demonstration in central Stockholm Saturday Aug. 4, 2012. Activists protesting an anti-Islam demonstration in downtown Stockholm attacked police in an attempt to break through a police line and get at the rival meeting, police said Saturday. Spokesman Kjell Lendgren said some 400 leftists had gathered to heckle the approximate 100 anti-Islam demonstrators, who were rallying to bring attention to what they perceive is the Islamization of Europe. August 4, 2012

STOCKHOLM—Swedish activists clashed with police amid a hail of bottles and fireworks in downtown Stockholm on Saturday as they tried to break through a police line and attack an anti-Islam demonstration.

Police spokesman Kjell Lendgren said around 400 leftists had gathered to heckle the 100-strong demonstration, which was rallying to bring attention to what it perceives is the Islamization of Europe.

He said the leftists shouted and blew vuvuzelas to drown out anti-Islam and nationalist speeches, but then started throwing bottles and lit fireworks at police, injuring two officers.

Lendgren said ten activists were arrested, after which the situation calmed down.

Both the anti-Islam meeting and leftist protest continued peacefully and were scheduled to end at 1600 local (1400GMT).

Nationalist groups such as the English Defence League were instrumental in organizing the anti-Islam event, which was described on the anti-Islam European Freedom Initiative's website as the "first worldwide counter-jihad action."

In the counter protest, local activists called for tolerance and warned of a rise in fascism. They referred to the nationalist groups as "Breivik's foot-soldiers" -- a reference to Norwegian ultra-nationalist Anders Breivik who killed 77 people in Norway last year.

''Too bad so sad, the baha'i are evil. they are evil because they work to promote the lie that islam is the progression on from Christianity.''

I would agree with Anushirvan; you appear to have an obsession with Bahai's, and with New Age daftness also, as seen in the Eric Alan Bell/Murfreesborough mosque thread.

Do the Bahai want to force sharia on the whole world ? Do they hate women, despise freedom of speech, freedom of conscience ? Do they want to murder people who reject Bahai'ism ? Do they want to stone people to death for adultery ? Flog them for breaking ramadan, or sharia ? Do they want to hang homosexuals ? Do they saw people's heads off, shrieking ''allahu akbar'' ?

I would submit, if they don't want to do any of these things, then they are entitled to whatever wacky beliefs they choose, as is anyone. And they are entitled *not* to be persecuted for them.

The tone of your posts makes me wonder, if you were ever in a position to do so, you would attempt to enforce *your* beliefs on others. I hope I'm wrong.

Muslim Brotherhood establishes militia inside Syria

The Muslim Brotherhood has established its own militia inside Syria as the country's rebels fracture between radical Islamists and their rivals, commanders and gun-runners have told The Daily Telegraph.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/syria/9450587/Muslim-Brotherhood-establishes-militia-inside-Syria.html

A colleague of mine is an Iranian Bahai. He told me that some married Bahai couples, even ones married for 50 years, have been imprisoned for cohabitation as their marriage is not recognized since Bahaiism is not considered a legitimate faith under Islam.

That says it all, really.

Thank you Robert for this post, time will tell whether the blasts of persecution extinguish such a lamp or make its flame more intense and stronger.

(Greetings grundgyoldvan, I believe we have held discourse before. While we have disagreed on many things I believe we found a common interest in the "challenging the militaristic version of Islam" and finding new lines of action that would build towards a more peaceful and harmonious planet.)

As a practicing Baha'i for the last 42 years I am respectful of your links Minoria and of the accuracy, detail and breadth of comments Amushirvan, as well as your support Jan and Jewdog.

It could be that we are facing as a species a level of change in thought akin to the struggle to understand that the World is not flat, that there are many other peoples and cultures on a round planet, and that we are trying to figure out how all of this fits together? The challenges could be such that we are witnessing what Christ alluded to when he said that "New wine cannot be put into old wine skins." That dramatically new knowledge requires new ways of thinking and working in the World.

A most critical perspective, which is clearly at the heart of JW's mission, is how religions view and work with concepts of war and peace. From an historical perspective what is the guidance available?:

Hinduism: Krishna's Revelation comes in the heat of battle, encouraging a prince to fight nobly.

Judaism: Promotes the adherence to a law of Justice within the body of believers but also "moves" people out of the Eastern Mediterranean through military means.

Buddha, coming 500 years before Christ, speaks only of battling our own evil passions, with no encouragement for fighting others (in my understanding).

{The only reference to war in Buddhism in an InterFaith database:

"Seeing your body as no better than an earthen pot, make war on Mara with the sword of wisdom, and setting up your
mind as a fortress, defend what you have won, remaining free from attachment."

(Buddhist, Dhammapada - Sayings of the Buddha 1 (tr. J. Richards)) }

Christ talks about not bringing peace but a sword, but it is mainly a sword of truth, and holds back his friends who would defend Him in the Garden of Gethsemane?

Muslims might suggest that Muhammad faced the same idol worshiping challenge that the Jews faced going into the Jordan river Valley 3,000+ years ago and responded accordingly to subdue the tribal warfare that was so prevalent.

The Bab actually spoke in favor of military Jihad, but only if it was done by a Bab'i king and "did not cause sadness". It is suggest by scholars of the Bab that this was in fact impossible and therefore was a way of containing Jihad.

Baha'u'llah, from the beginning of His public ministry in April 1863 begins to speak out against holy war, standing up and challenging both the Shah of Iran and the Sultan of Turkey/Caliph of Islam on this subject. In a "driving the money changers from the Temple like statement" Baha'u'llah publicly declares to the Sultan, while imprisoned in the worst penal colony of Turkey in the port city of Akka...

"O people of the earth! The first Glad-Tidings..., imparted unto all the peoples of the world is that the law of holy war hath been blotted out from the Book. Glorified be the All-Merciful, the Lord of grace abounding, through Whom the door of heavenly bounty hath been flung open in the face of all that are in heaven and on earth.

The second Glad-Tidings It is permitted that the peoples and kindreds of the world associate with one another with joy and radiance. O people! Consort with the followers of all religions in a spirit of friendliness and fellowship. Thus hath the day-star of His sanction and authority shone forth above the horizon of the decree of God, the Lord of the worlds."

- Baha'u'llah, Tablets of Baha'u'llah, pgs. 21-22

It is in verses such as these that the Muslim clergy find the Baha'i Faith so challenging. Bab'is and Baha'is have been putting their lives on the line for such a vision since day one of the process on May 23rd, 1844.

------------

All of this is to raise the question: "How do we as a planet come to view War, Religion and Peace?" Given the quite variant conditions and needs of the times in which each of these religions appear, how do we put all of this together?

Yes it is difficult but could it be that when these seemingly powerfully different perspectives come together we get a hammer of peace and an anvil of war effect, both of which are needed to "beat swords into plowshares" on an intellectual, philosophical, and some would say spiritual, basis?

That this process is very, very difficult is not surprising given that we have not done it that much before. But Europe does have success in a similar process on at least two other occasions, the first being the Peace of Westphalia to end 135 years of sectarian conflict (~1635), and then the purging of war from the European psyche after WWII?

There is much to study when it comes to how systems of knowledge work, and how people work with systems of knowledge we think of as religions? Harmonizing the religions, Baha'is believe, is the cornerstone of building a new peaceful planetary civilization.

Best wishes, TS

Jan, you have the main point: Bahais are entitled to whatever wacky beliefs they want, so long as they don't subscribe to jihad or sharia or other totalitarian methods and goals. I'd heard that Bahais reject violence, death for apostasy, and the other well-known evils of Islam. If Bahais are not totalitarian seekers of State power, then it's wrong for grungy old van to criticize them so harshly. He needs to prioritize and distinguish between merely having wacky beliefs on the one hand, and seeking to use violence to set up a wacky global theocracy on the other. All peoples need to unite to support the victims of Islam's global totalitarian ambitions, not hit them when they are down, in the way grungy old van did here. "If we don't hang together, we'll hang separately." We can't afford to mix up Islam with other faiths which, though perhaps wrong, are infinitely more benign.

PAKISTAN - MULTAN: Pakistani police said on Saturday they had arrested five Taliban militants who were planning “terror attacks” in the central city of Multan and other towns in the region.

“The terrorists belonging to Noor Gul group of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were arrested on an intelligence tip off,” city police chief Aamer Zulfikar told reporters.

The ‘Noor Gul’ group has not been heard of previously, and Zulfikar did not say where or when the arrests were made.

“They were planning to carry out terrorist activities on the eve of the martyrdom anniversary of Hazarat Ali, the fourth caliph of Islam, falling next week,” he said.

I second your quote to Jan, traeh. I also second your quoting that great man from the 18th century, Benjamin Franklin (a shrewder individual in all of history would be hard to find).

Islam is the enemy of so much which is good and sensible and decent and logical and fair and.... So very much. Therefore, divisions among those who oppose Islam make no sense.

One fight at a time is ordinarily the optimum policy. I wish all those who comment here at JW and who invite divisions among those who oppose Islam would desist from their inapt and inept efforts. Hope you're doing well.

Many have argued that we worship three gods but biblical theology proves that the Christian faith has always stood up for the monotheistic God.

Thank you, Wellington, and likewise to you.

My sympathies extend to all of humanity suffering under the yoke of the profoundly diabolical islam. This includes people
who followthe teachings of the Baha'i and muslims themselves.

In my attempt, not do promote "divisiveness", but in an effort to distinguish islamo-naziesque groups from the harmless ones, I need to ask the following:
What role, position does muhammad play in the belief system of the Baha'is?

Prudently skeptic yours,

WW

In an attempt not to promote..I meant to type,

must start using larger font...

Greetings WakingWest,

The "Simple Answer" would be....

1. The Baha'i Faith is as close to Islam as Christianity is to Judaism.

and....

2. The Baha'i Faith is as far away from Islam as Christianity is from Judaism.

That may not feel helpful at first, but it is to say that the Baha'i Faith does build upon traditions and beliefs in the Abrahamic tradition that are also found in Islam, much as Christ builds upon the core foundation of Moses' Teachings.

But Christ also dramatically shifts the spirit and practice of religion from the strict practices of Judaism 2,000 years ago that sought to demarcate believers from the surrounding peoples. Christ essentially Teaches though: 'You must love all humanity like the Samaritan on the road to Jericho and not be so bound up with the law. Similarly you must rescue the woman at the well who is about to be stoned for adultery.'

In the same spirit, Baha'u'llah makes dramatic breaks from the beliefs and traditions of Islam by stepping forward to proclaim in Word and deed, the Muhammad was only the seal of the lessor prophets (the Nabi - Surah 3:40) and not the seal of the Messengers of God (Rasul-allah - Messengers of God with a Book). Thus the Hand of God is not tied up as per Ali Translation, Surah 5:64. Further, the quotes from Baha'u'llah's Writings above are moving towards a new and distinctly different religious vision for this time?

^^^
That was quite a verbose, BS-ish, mostly non-answer Truthseeker. A very … Muslim-ish answer, actually. (By the way, Christianity and Judaism are actually closer than not, so your wording, as vague as you try to make it sound, is more than a little bit Baha’i-indicting. And, despite what Muslims claim, there is actually no “Abrahamic tradition” in Islam. Islam is a much-later-fabricated opposite of “Abrahamic tradition.” And Christ, who you cite, had a genuine connection to that line of tradition. Muhammad didn’t. Muhammad pulled all of his claims out of his butt 600 years later in a different part of the world for self-serving, immoral and horrific purposes.)

But the point is this:

Should negative criticism of the Baha’is be one of the main focuses of the anti-jihad movement? Of course not, far from it. It barely even deserves to be on the radar screen at this stage.

However, to address this on a more speculative level, there is a larger, and perfectly legitimate question here: Are not religions (such as Druze, Ahmadiyya, Baha’i, etc.) that share any common stem with Islam at all, even if the belief is not manifested in particular types of malicious intent or action, at least in some small way contributing to Islam’s strength and lending Islam legitimacy when it should be afforded none?

My own instinct is that in the long run, if we are truly going to defeat the evils of Islam once and for all, the entire ideology must be pulled up from its roots and identified as wholly illegitimate from top to bottom. I see no other way. This would logically mean that any religion that shares a foundation with it is, by extension, tainted.

Many of the arguments I hear in defense of the Baha’i faith rest simply on the fact that the Baha’is are persecuted by mainstream, orthodox Muslims (needless to say, in line with mainstream Islamic dictates). And, indeed, the Baha’is are persecuted in this way. But just because a religious group is persecuted by Muslims, it doesn’t necessarily follow from that that the persecuted religion is therefore entirely innocent in the context of the broader anti-jihad struggle.

The Ahmadis are a good example. As regular JWers know, while they generally shun ‘jihad of the sword’ (which is nice, sort of) they nonetheless effectively enable mainstream, orthodox Islam (and thus violent jihad) through various other channels (with essentially suicidal consequences.)

Now maybe the more abstract and universalist-ish posture of the Baha’i faith renders it malleable enough that it can successfully carve out, like a cancer, its Islamic background entirely – in a sense purify itself. I don’t know, personally, and I don’t feel that it is a question worth spending a lot of time pondering at this point. My concern is the immediate enemy. However, it is perfectly legitimate for each of us to be held to account for our belief systems chosen through our own free will, no matter who we are. And I don’t think it’s inherently illegitimate to consider whether any religions that share a root with Islam are entirely innocent, no matter how genuinely well-intentioned they may arguably be today.

Thank you truth seeker for responding to my question which I sall repeat for the purpose of clarity and understanding:

What role and/or position does muhammad play in the belief system of the Baha'i?

You write” The "Simple Answer" would be....
1. The Baha'i Faith is as close to Islam as Christianity is to Judaism.
and....
2. The Baha'i Faith is as far away from Islam as Christianity is from Judaism”

I was hoping for a clearer and a more direct answer yet your response nonetheless provides a basis to from judgment.
Based on your example than it can be concluded that since Christianity is so close and is entirely derived and considered a sect in it’s earliest days from Judaism and thereby considered both to be quite intertwined than although not stating it explicitly, can it not than be stated therefore unequivocally that mohamad is thoroughly intertwined within the Bahia’s religion and indeed costitues on of it's major prophets.

In addition you wrote ” In the same spirit, Baha'u'llah makes dramatic breaks from the beliefs and traditions of Islam by stepping forward to proclaim in Word and deed, the Muhammad was only the seal of the lessor prophets (the Nabi - Surah 3:40) and not the seal of the Messengers of God (Rasul-allah - Messengers of God with a Book). Thus the Hand of God is not tied up as per Ali Translation, Surah 5:64. Further, the quotes from Baha'u'llah's “

Does the “dramatic” step which the Baha’i make break it away from the traditions and beliefs of islam to a degree sufficent to consider mohamd no longer a prophet of any ranking or degree?

Greetings WakingWest,

Both in belief and practice Baha'is turn towards and follow the Teachings, laws and ordinances of Baha'u'llah and not Muhammad or Islam. These can all be found and downloaded as Word.docs or PDFs for free at www.bahai.org at the top right corner of the website.

The life of Baha'u'llah is extensively documented at www.bahaullah.org

If the Baha'i Faith is not of God it will quickly fade into the oblivion of unworkable/obsolete doctrines. If it is of God it will grow in influence even as Christ was able to create a world wide civilization by breathing the breath of life into a band of fishermen and carpenters? The test of time is the ultimate judge?

Best wishes, TS

Hi Truthseeker,

You wrote,

If the Baha'i Faith is not of God it will quickly fade into the oblivion of unworkable/obsolete doctrines.

Islam did not quickly fade. Does that mean it is of God? Certainly no. So your statement above would seem to be mistaken.

I note that in the Judeo-Christian tradition, success on earth is definitely not always interpreted as a sign of goodness.

"All peoples need to unite to support the victims of Islam's global totalitarian ambitions, not hit them when they are down, in the way grungy old van did here. "If we don't hang together, we'll hang separately." We can't afford to mix up Islam with other faiths which, though perhaps wrong, are infinitely more benign."

My thoughts exactly, traeh.

*Exactly*, traeh. Your quotation sums up the issue admirably.

OT:

To my fellow Jihadwatch readers and commenters, I wanted to let you know that I'm going to be leaving the comment section and will not be returning. I've been commenting here under different monikers since 2005; I've changed monikers from time to time over the years for security reasons.

Although I'm leaving, I want to be clear that I continue to regard the Jihadwatch project as a great idea. I hugely appreciate the work (and courage) of Robert Spencer, as well as the other authors whose works have been featured here from time to time. Over the years I've developed a positive regard for most of the regular commenters here including those with whom I sometimes disagree.

The main and deciding factor is time. Islam is not my day job or my formal area of expertise. The amount of time that I do have available for this interest in the Islam problem would be better spent on other projects and in other places. I've done a good deal of independent research over the years on Islam and the Islam problem. The Islam-related projects I'll be working on in the future will deal primarily with the "educating the general public" aspect.

-------------------------------------------

An unfortunate aggravating factor that has edged me to leave a bit sooner than I might have, otherwise, has been the return of the previously-banned commenter "Hesperado," a.k.a., LemonLime. Aside from any number of other issues and controversies involving Hesperado, one of the most basic in my experience is that he misrepresents other commenters' ideas, and this leads the concerned commenter to have to spend additional time having to correct these misrepresentations. (Or, one could ignore the misrepresentations and let them stand uncontested). Aside from the sheer nuisance of this, there is the practical consideration of whether it is worthwhile commenting in the first place when there is a particularly persistent fellow who has seemingly endless amounts of time to go around and misrepresent other people's comments. After several years as a commenter, after this comment I frankly don't want to waste another minute of my time dealing with Hesperado. I therefore choose to leave the this comment section.

Oops. Given my tendency to produce typos, I suppose that was a fitting farewell. Correction in brackets: "I therefore choose to leave [this] comment section."

Bye folks. Have a good one.

Ouch! Well that's unfortunate. Anyway, I'm glad you are going to continue with all this in some other venue. Best of luck.

Kinana, I hope you won't take your declaration as binding, and that if you ever change your mind, you will visit again. Your contributions here have been important.

That's a shame, really. You will be sorely missed, in fact. On the other hand, I can't really figure out why this should be such a problem in the first place, though. I know Hesperado still runs his own blog, and quite frankly, I do think he has made quite valid points both there and here, in many cases. Just like quite a lot of others on JW, such as yourself. Maybe sometimes he lacks the subtlety to refrain from making it seem as if his discourse has an ad hominem attack aspect to it, but many of the conclusions he draws can stand on their own two legs, so to speak. That doesn't mean one has to agree with someone else all the time or most of the time. It has never bothered me to such an extent.

Let me make sure I was clear, Kinana, by adding that the "Ouch! Well that's unfortunate," in my 6:37 AM comment referred not to the typo, but to your decision to absent yourself from the proceedings at Jihad Watch, a somewhat painful prospect. But I wish you the best with your new horizons.

OT:

To my fellow Jihadwatch readers and commenters, I wanted to let you know that I'm going to be leaving the comment section and will not be returning. I've been commenting here under different monikers since 2004; I've changed monikers from time to time over the years for security reasons
An unfortunate aggravating factor that has edged me to leave a bit sooner than I might have, otherwise, has been commentators such as k of k who force me to contest a seemingly endless series of incorrect contestable points which almost always arise from a tendency to attempt to steerJW's central mission by way of his/hers personal agendas.
Although I trully appreciate k of k's company as we fight shoulder to shoulder defending our very lives against the jjihad, his other interests and intolerance of those who politically aim elsewhere continually are the factors which truly impede the rest of us from going on.
Dissent, different viewpoints and unflinching conviction to the point of annoyance enrich our dialogue and understanding making LL, Hesp certainly a nuisance sometimes to some, but yet make him an invaluable voice in our discussion. Learn on K of K, you'll be back, at least you fessed up to your self- applauding tactic using different monikers for security reasons.

To whom it may concern,

I am a Baha'i and a regular Jihad Watch reader, terribly grateful to and appreciative of Mr. Spencer and his work. I'm going to try to 'set the record straight' as to some of the concerns folks have in here about the content of Baha'i teaching.

-Muhammad is regarded as a Prophet from God, equal in station with Jesus, Moses, Zoroaster, Buddha and Krishna. Islam is understood as part of the unfoldment of God's plan for humanity. The conventional Baha'i vision of Muhammad, as enunciated by Baha'u'llah, His son 'Abdu'l-Baha, and major scholars of the faith, is that he was first and foremost a benign preacher and that all his military actions were defensive. We see him roughly as a Karen Armstrong or a standard interfaith warm-fuzzy sort would see him. We believe the Qur'an to contain at least some Divine guidance. The Trinity is understood figuratively, such that Baha'is do not hold Jesus and Muhammad's visions to have been opposed to one another.

-Baha'is reject the authenticity of the ahadith. As to the institution of jihad, however, we believe there was some reason God allowed it in the early stages of the faith. We don't know why. Baha'u'llah says it was in accord with the exigencies of an earlier age, the same way polytheism was during the Hindu dispensation, or a de-emphasis on a personal God, in exchange for teachings on detachment and renunciation, was for Buddha's ministry. Baha'u'llah abrogated the institution of jihad forever.. But it is held to have once been part of God's plan for humanity, for some reason. In a passage in an authoritative Baha'i text called Some Answered Questions, his son 'Abdu'l-Baha defends the social order that existed in the early Ialamic state, but makes clear that it was only temporary.

-Baha'i leadership has always been clear that the attitude of the Baha'is to their "parent faith", Islam, should be reverential. We should never allow the misperception that we are Muslims to prevail, but we should defend Muhammad as zealously as a Muslim would, albeit nonviolently.

I mention all this to make it clear that there has been much division among Baha'is as to how to handle the question of Islamic supremacism. Baha'is are forbidden from becoming involved in partisan political disputes or in wars -- that's why you never see Baha'i paramilitaries defending themselves in Iran or Egypt, for example.
They endure suffering with Christlike meekness, in the belief that God rewards patient longsuffering, and out of a determination to avoid conflict, enmity, hatred or contumely to any soul. Some of you will remember how the Dalai Lama reacted when Oriana Fallaci asked him about his enemies: "A Buddhist cannot have enemies!". Nor can a Baha'i.

The following are quotes from 'Abdu'l-Baha:

"So intense must be the spirit of love and lovingkindness that the stranger find himself a friend, the enemy a true brother, no difference whatsoever between them! It is incumbent upon everyone to show the utmost love, rectitude of conduct, and sincere kindliness unto all the peoples and kindreds of the world!|"

This explains why the Baha'is do not have a visible presence in the anti-jihad movement.

I am personally an anti-jihadist, however, and so am navigating this question with great trepidation. Baha'is do not oppose the idea of making reference to the ways in which Islam is used to justify violence and supremacism. We just aver that God Himself did not intend for Islam to be so. Islam does have a connection to God, and Karen Armstrong's view of Muhammad is God's view as well.

-We also depart from Muslim belief and practice in numerous particulars. Baha'is have the same views about aniconism as Muslims do, but permit non-Baha'is to show Baha'u'llah's image without opprobrium. We have had some internal disputes over the freedom of speech and conscence in relation to Baha;'i dissidents, but support them strongly in the wider society.

-The Baha'is do envision a world civilization in which the Baha'i ideal of the oneness of humankind, of religion and of God will inform ordinary people's relationships to their religions. We envision not a Baha'ized world, as it were, but a world whose animating principles are informed by the Baha'i Faith, such that humankind can prosper and religion is no longer a source of contention. No one need become Baha'i, and those who are not Baha'i will always be respected and receive "affirmative action"-type support in any majority-Baha'i milieu. But the Baha'i goal is a world civilization in which Muslims, Christians and others drop religiously motivated animus and agree to live in harmony, according to the Baha'i principle of unity in diversity.

-Not all Baha'is are loth to criticize Islam. The scholars Juan Cole and Denis MacEoin are both ex-Baha'is; one is a naked propagandist for Islamic supremacism, the other is a stalwart anti-jihsdist, friend of Israel and ally of Daniel Pipes.

What I'm trying to make clear is that the Baha'i relationship to Islam and to the anti-jihad is complicated. But please don't withdraw your support. We are loving people and we are on the side of human flourishing.

My, or "our" support for the victims of islam is resolute and includes all of humanity, even muslims dying and suffering under islam because of islam.

Our contention is the manifestly evident truth that islam's trouble arises fundamentally from the ideology of islam most especially it's central figure muhammad, his teachings and the reverence his believers logically derive form the quran.
It is in this spirit that we are forced to set aside diplomacy and fussy platitudes mentioning inconvenient irrefutable truths which may be offensive to some.

By your admission, you follow a set of beliefs which inexorably and genetically are islamic. This AM by simply doing a cursory overview of Bahia precepts, I come upon some truths which apparently where very difficult for previous posters to to make. Bahia'i believe in mohamad as being a prophet, your belief in having two wives is God sanctioned, you orient towards mecca (for obligatory prayers only etc. No question the Baha'i tend towards peace and universal harmony, unfortunately in doing so, the dogma they set forth are reduced to not so much as "complicated" relationships but more like compromises of convenience rendering the absolutes of the divine dilute elixirs contaminating it's principles and ideals.
Is mohamad, or islam an unbroken chain of Divine revelation
leading form Moses, Buddha, Christ down to the Baha'i?
Unless the divine was psychophrenic with a twisted malevolency, the answer is obvious but to the blind.

apologises, schizo-phrenic, not psycho...

Thank you grungy but old wise van.

Thanks to your discernment I educated myself a bit in the last 12 hours and to my chagrin, was able to discover for myself that indeed there was something fishy, reminiscent of a eccumentality aspect to the Bahia. They have defanged the monster but in doing so thay keep it alive leaving it capable of morphing back it's tail to came back at any time in it's more natural fierce glory.

"They endure suffering with Christlike meekness, in the belief that God rewards patient longsuffering, and out of a determination to avoid conflict, enmity, hatred or contumely to any soul. Some of you will remember how the Dalai Lama reacted when Oriana Fallaci asked him about his enemies: "A Buddhist cannot have enemies!". Nor can a Baha'i."

Now, basically, this is what we see happening in Iran all the time, according to the reports. Although in a sense this is an admirable trait on the one hand, you'd have to admit though that it doesn't serve any purpose whatsoever. Besides, I tend to believe that Bah'a'ullah more or less inculcated this doctrine of impartiality and low profile because historically speaking, he would've been well aware of the fact that his followers were going to be treated as default apostates in the long run. Islam being what it is however, any non-believer will automatically incur the wrath of the Islamic clergy and adherents , no matter how much one wants to advocate Transglobal Goodwill to people of all creeds. This could never apply to Islam, it is totally unrealistic. There is in fact no hiding from it possible. This simply doesn't mix or can be reconciled with Islam, point final. No matter how much you want to refer back to the roots of the Baha'i faith in Bábist Shi'ism, even. You can't appease Muslims that way. Scrap all of that, because that's basically the biggest conundrum your religion is presenting its adherents with. It will never materialize.

Sorry, this was addressed to Funky Child, of course. I pushed reply on the wrong commenter.

I find it very difficult if not impossible to see how the Bahia or any other ideology no matter how flowery it ornaments itself can hold my trust and respect when mohamad an and his demonic doctrines are integral to their practice and beliefs.

The bottom line is that the Bahia revere mohamad who is on their short list of divinely sent "prophets". They devoutly maintain many of the practices established by islam. The stain on it on this account overwhelms entirely my capacity to trust and respect it, regrettably so.

Thank you for looking beyond victim status

"Victim Status" yet another PCMC Unity in Diversity Cancer

I don't 'hate' per se

I just want people that have open minds here to look beyond the 'obvious' evil and see that which has enabled it

I hope I am not seen as a pariah because I stoked the coals of inquiry

No, not a pariah, this was just a minor difference of opinion and an appeal for unity against the aggressor.

Greetings,

There has been much discussion which, owing to the press of other events, has caused a delay in responding.

The Baha'i Faith does not carry on the traditions of Islam in the same way that Christianity broke with the traditions of Judaism. Some specific examples include:

- We do not pray towards Mecca, rather we turn in prayer to the resting place of Baha'u'llah just outside the penal colony of Akka, 15 miles North of Haifa, Israel.

- We Fast, but it is a sun up to sundown fast always between March 2nd and 21st.

- The law of divorce has been dramatically changed, couples must apply for a year of separation but reconciliation.

- The penalties for theft and murder have been altered, the cutting off of hands is no longer practiced.

- Adulterers are not stoned but fined in a geometrically increasing way for each repeated offense to preserve the sanctity of marriage.

- People are free to leave the Baha'i Faith and are to be treated fairly and kindly.

- People who attack the Baha'i Faith from within are counseled but ultimately expelled and are not associated with.

- As mentioned previously, the laws of holy war, the 160+ references to fighting in the Qur'an are to be blotted out and never brought back. The use of force, though, is necessary as per the World wide coalition that came together to stop Hitler.

-----------------

I agree with you Anushirvan that there are a number of areas in which the Baha'i Faith can never be reconciled with Islam and must stand distinct from it. An interesting question is why more Baha'is have not been killed?

Will the Baha'i Faith ever have a chance to make any impact on the World, most specifically changing traditional Islamic thinking about war? Please consider what happened to Christianity in the first 160+ years of its existence.

66 years after death of Christ the first of three major Jewish/Roman wars commenced, to be repeated two more times over the next 70 years and result in the Jewish nation being almost wiped out and certainly driven to the far flung regions of the Roman Empire. Under these harrowing conditions (an elephant rumble of the first order of magnitude) how did the small band of weak, insignificant Christian fishermen and peasants survive and ultimately flourish? How would Christianity grow through the focused wrath of the Roman Caesars 150 years later? Understanding this process helps put the current global religious/political process into a more understandable perspective?

---- (to be continued, sorry need to push the pause button) ---

Continuing 020,

Baha'i Credentials to speak about and stand up to Islamic traditions re. war....

- Between 1849-1850, 20.000 Bab'is laid down their lives rather than revert back to Shiite Islamic practices.

- Baha'u'llah in 1853 spent four months in the Shah of Iran's worst dungeon with a 100 lb chain around his neck.

- Baha'u'llah gave up his share of a family wealth that would have been equivalent to the Kennedys or Rockerfellers to promote the tenants of a new faith process.

- Baha'u'llah spent five years under house arrest in Western Turkey (Aderne/Adrianople 1863-1868)

- Baha'u'llah spends 9.5 years in the worst prison of the Sultan of Turkey (Abu Grab/Alcatraz), the penal colony of Akka/Acre, Palestine.

- Continued persecution of Baha'is in Iran, Egypt, etc.

- The arrest of Baha'i and murder of 20+ leaders in Iran after the 1979 Iranian Revolution rather than renounce their Faith.

- The willingness of College age Baha'is in Iran to submit to Iranian government actions to prevent them from attending colleges and try to economically depress up and coming generations of Baha'i's. They refuse to submit to renouncing their faith even the "little lie" of just writing in their Faith as Muslim.

-----

It is a difficult approach, but what would happen if they fought back, as opposed to organizing publicity and challenge to the persecution? The fight would would just spiral out of control and we would become labeled as terrorists ourselves?

All for now, respectfully, TS

I have to admit, historically it makes an awful lot of sense what you say. I know about all of this (like the imprisonment in Siyah Chal, etc.), because I take a keen interest in history in general. That's also basically why I tend to believe that above all else, adherents of the Baha'i faith do not deserve to be slandered or persecuted like they have been up til now. If anything, I find it quite strange that a minority of Christians seems to be unable to emphasize the commonalities, whereas they seem to be quite quick off the mark to criticize the Baha'i faith for its universalist tendencies, which are perceived as a threat by them. The historical analogies you make do make a lot of sense that way. Which is why I can't possibly perceive Baha'is as a problem that should divide the Counterjihad movement internally.

Thank you for your fair minded and thoughtful commentary Anushirvan. There are many evolutionary paths that can be developed to work with the challenges of "War, Religion and Peace". On one side is the "Roman Approach" of 2,000 years ago. Another is the "Wall of Separation" that now exists in Israel. We can be patient as we have done with Communism in Russia, China and Vietnam (fairly successfully in the last two case). A range of other options then the Baha'i approach. My sense of anthropology there were many primate strains before it came apparent that homo sapiens would become the dominant approach?

From my personal Baha'i perspective, I think that there is a place to repeatedly invite Muslims to lay on the table their vision of where the world needs to be heading and how we are going to get there, and how they propose enlisting others to join in. Baha'is are focused significantly on developing alternatives for people to evaluate.

Best wishes, TS

It is acknowledged that the Bahia islamic sect has been persecuted, at times quite brutally by the broader islamic community surrounding it.
The inherent violent streak generated by the teachings and example of mohamed manifest themselves universally and broadly even amongst their own coreligionists, no doubt.
What any objective observer is able to discern from this thread is that in answer to a previous poster’s simple question regarding the prominence of mohamed amongst the Bahia’s revered prophets, only lengthy obfuscating answers have been put forward, selectively mentioning where the Bahia and its progenitor islam differ.
You do speak of points of communality between the Bahia and Christianity but avoid the major points of similarity between islam and the Bahia. Despite your claims toward an enlightened pursuit of world harmony is telling the truth not also part of the Bahia ideal?
Anurshivan alleged that those mentioning the Bahia mohamad connection are “unable to emphasize the commonalities” It is interesting to note that while not truthfully answering the simple question first posed you write of the difference, and distance between
Christianity and Judaism, coincidentally diversionary? are you not bringing into the discussion differences ? So is if the truth is not acknowledged or accepted are we dealing with lies of simply individuals in denial or quite simply deluded. Is mohamad bahis prophet? Yes or no?

Baha'is believe Muhammad is a Messenger of God with a book, but Baha'u'llah has come to abrogate the Revelation of Muhammad and provide a new Message designed to meet today's problems as per the listing of some of the Baha'i beliefs above that are quite different from Islam.

To reject the Baha'i Faith because of a connection to Islam would suggest a logic that one should reject Christianity because it is connected to the verses of Deuteronomy that call for the killing of every living thing in specific conquests as the nation of Israel entered into the Jordan River Valley?

Might we be facing some of the most challenging questions we individually and as a species have to face?

- How do we recognize a Messenger of God?
- Who might be a Messenger of God?
- How do we understand the Will of God?
- How do we understand situations of war, religion and peace? (Both in a religious context but also in the history of the United States?)
- What attracted fishermen and peasants to Christ, but not Scribes and Pharisees?

Good luck, TS

Baha'i believe that muhammad is a messenger of God.
Baha'i believe that muhammad is a messenger of God
Baha'i believe that muhammad is a messenger of God

On this basis alone no matter what congruences may exist between the Baha'i and the Christian religions, it is categorically not possible theologically for Christianity as well as Judaism to reconcile with the Bahia. As someone who is at war with islam and it’s jihad, philosophically and otherwise, I resolutely cannot accept regardless of the qualifiers, as divine truth, any system of doctrine which incorporates such a grotesque blasphemous and contradictory precept such as this. No matter the qualifiers, but's abrogations or as I mentioned earlier, compromises of convenience.
Subjugation and murder are not right now and they have never been.
The passage you allude to refers to an attack commanded by Moses against a nation deprived of right and good to such an extent that they would sacrifice and burn their women and children. I suspect that today, much of the world would remain paralyzed witnessing atrocities of this magnitude, some by philosophies of non-interference even theological principles blinding them from the obvious.
Once again it is interesting to note a bit of anti-Semitism bleeding out of the points you attempt to make, no doubt the little inert mohamadism lies deep in the core.

Greetings WakingWest,

I acknowledge your frustrations that have occurred, but we share some common beliefs, such as...

- We both want to see concepts of Jihad (holy war) removed from both the practice, but most importantly the psyche, of the human species?

- The elimination of grotesque practices?

- The elimination of subjugation and murder (and war, with war being the greatest form of murder) in the long term of human development.

This discussion, though, is touching on the most significant of nerves about how God and humans are working in the World. I am going to list a range of scenarios that I suggest are seemingly very similar but not the ultimate end of where I would hope we would be. That said, it feels to me that, as uncomfortable as it may seem, there are a lot of similarities in the way war and discipline is practiced over time:

JUDAISM

Moses taught in Deuteronomy:
17,11 According to the law which they shall teach thee, and according to the judgment which they shall tell thee, thou shalt do; thou shalt not turn aside from the sentence which they shall declare unto thee, to the right hand, nor to the left. 17,12 And the man that doeth presumptuously, in not hearkening unto the priest that standeth to minister there before the LORD thy God, or unto the judge, even that man shall die; and thou shalt exterminate the evil from Israel. 17,13 And all the people shall hear, and fear, and do no more presumptuously. {S}

Deuteronomy 20:10-18
10 When thou drawest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it. 11 And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that are found therein shall become tributary unto thee, and shall serve thee. 12 And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it. 13 And when HaShem thy God delivereth it into thy hand, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword; 14 but the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take for a prey unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which HaShem thy God hath given thee. 15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations. 16 Howbeit of the cities of these peoples, that HaShem thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth, 17 but thou shalt utterly destroy them: the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as HaShem thy God hath commanded thee; 18 that they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods, and so ye sin against HaShem your God.

(WW you suggest that these were evil people that would burn their women and children, and that deserve what they get.

DE: Baha'u'llah teaches that Messengers of God "doeth whatsoever They willeth" based on the "exigencies of the time". As we believe in Moses we accept that this level of Draconian rules were necessary to lift the Jewish people up to a higher level and to establish the belief of One God in the geographic heart of the planet. Times were rough back then. It was essential as well that Moses prevail over Pharaoh.)

------
ISLAM:

Punishment for those who "wage war" against God.
33. The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, of the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter.

34. Except for those who repent before they fall into your power: in that case, know that Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
(The Qur'an (Yusuf Ali tr), Surah 5)

The first 30 Verses of the 9th Surah which are some of the most powerful verses in the Qur'an re. fighting. Muslims would maintain that these verses were necessary to subdue the continually waring tribes of Arabia that buried their daughters alive.

I acknowledge that Muhammad did call out for people to go and assassinate two Jewish poets of Medina who were ridiculing him.

I acknowledge that Muhammad did watch the killing of the 600 members of the last Jewish clan that remained in Medina, but it is also true that this clan had become traitors while Muhammad was fighting the idol worshipers during the Battle of the Trench.

---------------
US HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT AND PRACTICE OF WAR:

Processes with Native Americans:
The long term practice of subduing the Native Americans through armed force, ethnic cleansing and in the case of passing out small pox infested blankets - genocide?

Processes in WWII:
British and American Generals, and possibly even Roosevelt and Churchill agreed to firebomb Dresden even though it has been stated that it may not have any major military value. 22,000++ died, obviously including many women and children. This operation was defended as a way to break the fighting will of Nazi Germany.

The nuclear bombing of Hiroshima (66,000 dead) and Nagasaki (39,000 dead - as per Internet data). These attacks were deemed justified to break the will of the Japanese leadership which I acknowledge did happen.

Processes since 2001:
Shock and Awe

Targeted drone assassinations

---------------------
---------------------

All of this is to suggest that in addition to Jihad that all war be removed from the planet. That there have been processes of war that have occurred throughout the ages that have a lot commonalities.

Can specter of war be removed? Actually I am hopeful, based on European History. The burning passions that have fueled so many wars throughout the continent, inspiring Napoleon and Hitler in the most extreme cases, have been totally abandoned/burnt up in ultimate conflicts. But equally significantly is the development of the institutions of the EU to keep those passions from being rekindled.

-----

WHAT ABOUT THE GROWING FLAME OF A GLOBAL JIHAD/SECTARIAN/RELIGIOUS WORLD WAR:

I acknowledge that virtually all of the pieces are in place to ignite such a conflict.

- Israel greatly fears Iran
- Iran hates Israel and wants to destroy it
- The Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas and Hezbollah hate Israel and want to destroy it.
- There are numerous verses in the Qur'an that inspire people to fight those who "drive you from your home".
- Israel though has prevailed in repeated attacks in 1948
- The US and Europe fear a nuclear Iran
- Russia and China support Iran in order to weaken the US and Europe.

The probability of an all mighty conflict is very high, and it would take a miracle to stop this run-away freight trains from colliding head on. If such a conflict does occur openness to setting aside the passion for religious conflict would be greatly decreased, as per Germany in WWII.

Does it have to be this way?

I acknowledge that while the Baha'i Faith has courageously stood up against Jihad and religious conflict, its voice is very small.

The only hope that I can see at this time is to dramatically challenge peoples thinking about where we are headed going into the future. I have done this in an InterFaith panel entitled: "Looking for creative new Middle East Policies" that did bring to light the dangers we face and need to quickly seek new possibilities. I also challenge thinking in my home town with virtually monthly letters to the Editor in our local paper.

The power of ideas did ultimately prevail in the case of Communism. In addition to ideas, there was also the attractiveness of the West relative to the Communist states. The states, like Rumania ultimately imploded. Are the processes in the Middle East a form of implosion that will prepare the way for major changes in the future, though regrettably such a waiting process may be overwhelmed by the pressures listed above that you are aware of.

We live at the juncture of the greatest kind of change the planet has ever faced in terms of the interplay of ideas, beliefs and practices? Good luck in your efforts to promote more peaceful practices.

Respectfully yours, TS

One can achieve a gargantuan task by simplifying the elements, please limit your point(s) so as not to obscure them with confusion.

The primary points now established mutually and accepted are the following

1) Baha'i believe that muhammad is a messenger of God

2)Subjugation and murder are not right nor have ever been.

Since you use Biblical reference, albeit as I shall prove later modified from the actual, to substantiate the basis of your conclusions, I will assume therefore that you will equally accept the following scriptural references to discover the flawed assumptions you are making.

One of many scriptural references clearly invalidating the precept that muhammad is a messenger of God are the following:

Is42:1-8 “Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles.
2 He will not cry out, nor raise His voice, Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street.
3 A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench; He will bring forth justice for truth.
4 He will not fail nor be discouraged, Till He has established justice in the earth; And the coastlands shall wait for His law."
5 Thus says God the Lord, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, Who gives breath to the people on it, And spirit to those who walk on it:
6 "I, the Lord, have called You in righteousness, And will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the Gentiles,
7 To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the prison, Those who sit in darkness from the prison house.
8 I am the Lord, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved images.

My elect One!. I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the Gentiles,
….My glory I will not give to another!!! no mohamad, no other….

MT 7:15 15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.
16 "You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles?
17 "Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
18 "A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
19 "Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
20 "Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

Mohamadean fruit=Murder, mercilessness, plunder, conquest by the sword….death , much death, etc. etc.

Accepting simultaneously the premise and believing that mohamad and Jesus Christ are both messengers of God is easily proven to be spiritually impossible and logically self-invalidating mutually exclusive premises.

It is curious to note that you misquote Deuteronomy in your attempt to equivocate everything under the sun in order to make Baha’is religion acceptance of mohamad and the legitimacy of islam a little more palatable.
You write “17,12 And the man that doeth presumptuously, in not hearkening unto the priest that standeth to minister there before the LORD thy God, or unto the judge, even that man shall die; and thou shalt exterminate the evil from Israel. 17,13
Shall exterminate? The word in Hebrew is בִֽעַרְתָּ֥
And in all translations this is interpreted as Purge, must/shall die put way evil, since this is so why incorrectly use the word exterminate?
You also wrote” WW you suggest that these were evil people that would burn their women and children, and that deserve what they get.”

This was in my reference to your characterization of Moses command to defeat the Canaanites, who where noted to be exceptionally cruel and you may have realized this if you would educate yourself a bit more than obviously throwing a bunch of smoke hiding and justifing your reverence to evil mohamad.
De 12:31 "You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way; for every abomination to the Lord which He hates they have done to their gods; for they burn even their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.

You unfortunately have been hopefully in irreversibly into a world view constructed of deliberately modified and selective bits of propaganda which lead those lasy of intellect and thought away form the the sometimes painful truth of our world. I for one are grateful for the European "conquerors" long ago who freed many of my ancestors in America from mohammedan-like tyrants sacrificing people and children for whatever belief they had.

Ts, the truth will set you free.

Unfortunately you have been, hopefully not irreversibly, mislead into a world view..

fighting the clock as always.

Greetings WakingWest,

You are clearly energetically engaged with what is the most challenging problem facing humanity, how we harmonize such divergent religious thought.

- Help me understand please how Muhammad is any different from Moses standing up to and subduing the Canaanites? For the first twelve years of his ministry Muhammad is as pacifistic of Christ in Medina? It could be said that he was opposing the "cruel, continually warring, idol worshiping, live daughter burying Meccans and the tribes in the surrounding areas"? That he was calling people to the worship of the one Spiritual God of Abraham, Moses and Christ?

- I agree that the culture of war that continued over time in Islam is not appropriate for a modern world, that better, much more peaceful fruits are now needed. I strive to seek out these possibilities and ways that we can define new lines of actions to consider.

How we investigate, explore and discover truth is an interesting question.

Respectfully yours, TS

"Help me understand please how Muhammad is any different from Moses standing up to and subduing the Canaanites"

I do not interpret any of the events you mention as "standing up and subduing" , I will use the word fighting instead.

In these events, one of the major distinctions that are apparent between Moses versus muhammad is that in one case you are dealing with an attack on a culture of sadistic, brutal group of child and woman burning psychopaths, compared to the other group who carried and upheld the highest ethical and moral law known to man, perhaps to date. So take your guess who attacked one and who attacked the other. I already referencet to you a book providing the evidence of this and whoch is in no need to abrogate.

I hold then opinion that the world at present is facing an unprecedented critical stage at the brink of tremendous calamity streaming principally from the great error which any number of islamic countries will make bases on their animus toward the west. If you are a Bhai living in iran or pakistan continue to make any effort you can to bring back you compatriots from the insane path they are on, if outside the islamic world, associate4 as much as possible from islam and whatsoever you do , do not assist it.

typo, disassociate, not "associate4"

Greetings WakingWest, I too .....

"...hold then opinion that the world at present is facing an unprecedented critical stage at the brink of tremendous calamity..."

Such a calamity as we have never seen in terms of the collusion of great tectonic belief systems coming together, colliding galaxies even, and forging a new reality.

Could write more but need to go. I live in the US. You do not sound like a native English speaker. What country or part of the World do you live in?

Good luck, TS

As the laws of physics are imutable, as the realisation that 1+1=2, in any part of the Universe, so hold some of the laws humankind's conscience can understand.
These precepts and understands where made evident eons ago. Deceit came later obscuring and darkening some of these simple truths. Pride, ego and intellectual dishonesty
will blind you and me.

muhammad was an unrepentant murder.
Bahia revere him with the claim of him being a messenger of God.

Remove and separate any evil from what you consider to be sacred.

My ancestry goes back more than a few centuries in the Americas, but includes European roots as well. I was born in the US, but have lived and studied abroad. For years I have lived amongst the poorest and amongst the richest, with criminals and saints, I have immersed myself with several Christian Churches, have pracitced a little TM(Hindu), but my academic focus and interest has been in the sciences, I took a singular English course in English while at college.

TS, please indulge my curiosity and tell me about your background.

May you find the courage you need not to compromise that which is universally sacred with that which is just culturally local

No4U,

Your moniker appears to be new (2012 only), but you appear to have some kind of baggage or hostility or grudge against me. Not sure why. Perhaps you could explain it to me.

Your post seems half an attempt at lampoon of my post, and half an attempt to smuggle in various absurd and unsupported allegations.

Why did you wait until now to comment on one of my comments?

"An unfortunate aggravating factor that has edged me to leave a bit sooner than I might have, otherwise, has been commentators such as k of k who force me to contest a seemingly endless series of incorrect contestable points which almost always arise from a tendency to attempt to steerJW's central mission by way of his/hers personal agendas."

Examples, evidence please. [Present case excluded; I think I'm allowed to (a) let my fellow commenters know when I'm leaving and (b) defend myself from someone who so rudely and cowardly uses the occasion to heap up absurd and baseless allegations. I'll ask for you to attempt to substantiate these allegations, or is that too much to ask of you?].

"Although I trully appreciate k of k's company as we fight shoulder to shoulder defending our very lives against the jjihad, his other interests and intolerance of those who politically aim elsewhere continually are the factors which truly impede the rest of us from going on."

Again, what specifically are you talking about?

"Dissent, different viewpoints and unflinching conviction to the point of annoyance enrich our dialogue and understanding"

..which has nothing to do with my above-stated objection to Hesperado's (LL's) conduct.

"...making LL, Hesp certainly a nuisance sometimes to some, but yet make him an invaluable voice in our discussion."

Where are the examples of this "invaluable" content contributed by Hesperado/LL? Do you have any idea how hostile he has been toward Robert over the years?

"Learn on K of K, you'll be back, at least you fessed up to your self- applauding tactic using different monikers for security reasons."

Not "confessing," just telling; there is nothing wrong with changing from one moniker to another in succession. Moreover, I've already informed my fellow commenters when I've made such changes.

Not "self-applauding". That doesn't even make sense in light of what we are talking about. How could mentioning my changing monikers over the years for security reasons possibly be construed as "self-applauding" here? Almost everyone on the site uses a moniker for security reasons among others. It's nothing to brag about. I'm simply explaining above that while I've been here since 2005 I haven't used the moniker Kinana of Khaybar for that whole period, in case anyone was wondering why they haven't seen the moniker as early as that.

-"Kinana of Khaybar" (late 2007/early 2008 to present)
-"Khaybar Oasis" (roughly 2006 - late 2007)
-2nd moniker (later part of 2006)
-1st moniker (Oct 2005 - later part of 2006)

I don't mention the first two names to most other commenters, unless I trust them. I was threatened and cyber-stalked by an angry Muslim (who was taking an unhealthy interest in my location) under my first one, and a friend accidentally connected me to the first one when I was using the second one. That said, someone who really wanted to put things together could probably do so, and at this point I'm not terribly worried about it.

traeh,

Thanks traeh. BTW, I changed emails some time ago when Google changed aspects of its policy, so I have misplaced a bunch of emails. How can I contact you? Through one of your blogs (Dune Rune or Quoting Islam)?

I'll come back to this thread.

Anushirvan,

Thanks. As I have written elsewhere about this I don't have a problem with substantive or genuine disagreement. In fact I enjoy debate, as anyone who's followed this site over the years who knows me would also know. One of the main problems with Hesperado/LL concerns misrepresentation. Don't just take my word for it; he's been doing that to Robert for years as well--even more so to Robert than to me. But that's not even the main reason I'm leaving, which as I've said is due to time considerations and what I think I can most effectively accomplish. I think I'll accomplish more if I work more on long-term projects and cut down on the commenting.

Minor correction:

It looks like "No4U" has a comment in 2010. The small number of his/her other comments that come up on Google are in 2012.

Not sure why someone with whom I've apparently never previously interacted, and who hardly ever comments, suddenly comes in guns-a-blazin' to defend Hesperado and attack me on the occasion of my exit. Of course, he (?) may have interacted with me under some other moniker.

Sorry for the delay in responding WakingWest, have been quite busy.

You speak of a "Spiritual Physics" which is an interesting way of us trying to grow to deeper levels of truth. Religious believers have definitely worked hard to understand the reality of the Creation based on framework of understanding. It has been difficult for people to sometimes see these realities based, as you say, on the blinders of ego, emotion and attachment to power/qualities of this World.

Moses standing before Pharaoh and challenging Pharaoh's belief that he was the embodiment of the sun god. How many people in the world still love, adore or even believe in such a reality that Pharaoh presented? It would seem that over time religious beliefs, just as better understanding of the laws of Physics have improved?

Baha'is respect Muhammad for standing up against a host of idol worshippers just as Moses stood up against Pharaoh.

Baha'i focus and reverence today is all focused on the new Message of Baha'u'llah.

Each day is a new opportunity to learn more about the Creator and to better live, understand and hopefully move with the Spirit of the Creator.

My ancestors came on boats 300-500 years ago. I grew up in the Center of the US and began to have a spiritual transformation during a summer of meditation, including TM and going back my Christian heritage, in the summer of 1970. It was sparked by coming home from Washington, DC where I was standing in front of the White House in the mass anti-Vietnam War demonstration following the Kent State killings. During that summer a realization emerged that we can talk about economic, political or social change, but what is most important are the second by second change that occurs at the level of heart and soul where we strive to connect with our ability to have compassion, empathy and understanding with others.

The ultimate questions though is how we are engaged with a World that is dramatically changing with the massive explosion of knowledge and electronic interconnectedness?

It is interesting that in years past the greatest motivator for men was to become a powerful general and conquer the World such as Alexander, Caesar, Genghis Khan, Napoleon, Hitler, etc. Now we see Bill Gates and Warren Buffet creating a vision that the goal of wealth and power is to promote philanthropy and the betterment of civilization. Is this a sign of progress?
