Great speech Robert and Pamela. You guys make us think there is a hope to keep our freedom. As soon as Obama is kicked out of the office, I will enjoy it with a style.

The sentence describes an oxymoron - if you are too stupid you cannot know you are stupid.

I use to have a close friend whose IQ stretched beyond 150 - he is a mathematics genius. We use to enjoy discussing everything under the Sun and we spent several years being drinking buddies, till about a year after 9/11.

He is so defensive about Islam, because he thinks that they are treated by the world unfairly. He dosn't read anything about Islam or Muslims, but he was very quick to condemn anything I told him.

Here is the catch - most of these people are not dumb, but they somehow do not accept the vile nature, exposed by us, of Islam is an accurate depiction. Most people can't accept that Muslims are and can be seriously evil. They think the hand and head chopping happens in some remote places they will never visit. They are too busy condemning us instead of going and reading something real about Islam. It is a difficult task for us to make them see reality. We didn't meet for a beer for about three years or more. Nevertheless, I know the guy is very smart, unfortunately he is not prepare to read about the True face of Islam.

You have a better grasp of the Problem of the Problem than many Jihad Watch commenters. There are more complications you may or may not be aware of, but your grasp of the essential epiphany -- that neither stupidity nor evil can explain why most of our fellow Westerners persist in defending Muslims -- is essential. When Jihad Watchers haven't had that epiphany, they tend to fall back on the easier explanations, glibly accusing their fellow Westerners of mere stupidity -- or, worse, actually malevolence -- when, that is, they are not indulging in the crotchet-construct of those "Dastardly Elites" as the Explanation.

Probably the greatest expert today on the Left-Islam alliance, I would say, is Jamie Glazov. He points out that in order to acknowledge the truth about Islam, the Leftist would have to be prepared to lose a lot of friends.
Peer-pressure is very powerful in any area. Robert Spencer, Pamela Geller and friends have to daily endure the slander and ridicule of most of the Media.
As you say, the the subject is complex. One of the factors Glazov points to is the self-examination required in order to see the truth (in this instance the truth about Islam). It is interesting to note that lack of self-examination is certainly a feature of militant Islam. In the case of the Left the lack of self-examination is seen in the claiming of the moral high ground by Leftists. The Left always claims to be the compassionate Party. Glazov notes that Leftists don't give a damn about the plight of women in Islamic countries. The voice of Leftist-Feminists on this subject is a deafening silence (now that's a real oxymoron!) A feature of ideologies is their lack of respect for the individual. Millions of lives have been sacrificed to Communism and Islam.
Another big factor in "why most of our fellow Westerners persist in defending Muslims" is just plain ignorance. How many in the West know what is going on in Iran and Saudi for instance? Unless they visit websites like this one?
Possibly the most deadly factor causing the defence of Islam is moral and cultural relativism. So we must not criticise Islam since it is, on this reckoning, just as valid as the Judaeo-Christian culture.
