Saudi judoka who got Olympic rules changed to wear hijab is blue belt and would never have qualified for Olympics

The Saudis, I'm sure, aren't disappointed with her losing the match as she clearly won much more for them by getting the clowns at the IOC to bend and stoop to their ideology.

They should rename the sport "Jewdo" - that ought to keep these losers away...

This is only going to end up hurting women from muslim countries who want to compete. I can just picture them being pressed into wearing a hijab as a condition for competition in national and international tournaments. And once they get there, the hijab WILL be used against them. Outside of a BDSM convention you're never going to find a more strangle- and choke-happy group as judoka. Give them a piece of cloth and they'll find a way to wrap it around their opponent's neck. And are we now obliged to stop the match if a headscarf gets dislodged or pulled off as with belts? This is going to become a huge mess for those of us that love Judo, and all because the IOC apparently keeps their balls in S.A.'s handbag.

...it sounds to me like this was planned by Saudi Arabia from the beginning. She was just a pawn for the Sheiks to see if the IOC would bend their rules for muslim women....which they did. Picture the Islamic world with the arms held high...SCORE!!!!!

What infuriates me is that the Olympics are to be neutral when WE, non-Muslims asked for instance for a minute of silence for some Israeli athletes who lost their lives at the Olympics. If so, the Olympics should refuse in all fairness to recognize the special rags and attires that are a truly visible sign of a particular ideology. I think the IOC should quit trying to be culturally-correct in their desperate attempt to be inclusive of those who are culturally-incorrect. Donning Glad-bags may have a place in certain backward societies but these political fetishes should not be insisted upon at the expense of degrading the Olympic Games or the absolute pinnacle of physical competition that they represent.

I for one, am glad that the Saudi woman was allowed to participate. As more and more women start participating in various events their people will realize how absurd their laws are and maybe at some time the mullah power will dissipate and people will be free to follow religion or not.....

This is already being celebrated as a great victory for the liberation of women. That I fail to see: it only shows the incompetence of the Olympic Committee when up against absolutist rulers and dictators.

The Saudis only very hesitantly acknowledged a very few rights of their female athletes. That this reflects their attitudes towards women in general is largely hushed up, and I see little to celebrate here.

The Saudis forced through their own interpretation of the Olympic rules with regard to Judo: no doubt the high percentage of Gulf Royalty among the top echelon of the Olympic Committee helped. What are such doubtful people doing there, by the way???

The Saudi female here mentioned was accompanied by a male guardian, her brother. This is all very correct according to Saudi law and practices, but only demonstrates that the Olympic Committee folded yet again.

What should have been acclaimed as progress for womens' right has become a showpiece for the Saudis: they run the show and Saudi Sharia applies averywhere.

She can say that again: not only didn't she qualify for the event - another win for the Saudis - but it must have been extremely uncomfortable for her being let outside at all among strangers, and multitudes of Infidel men staring at her.

The last Olympics cost close to 5.5 Billion USD. The host countries normally lose money.

Femen stage topless anti-Islamist Olympic protest in London

In my checkered career, I was involved in martial arts for a number of years...I trained under a number of high level black belts of whom one a 9th degree is my good friend...
The name of this system was Kajukenbo...The emphasis was on combat, not sport...The belt system was white for beginner, then blue, green, brown, and black...There was a fighting test for each promotion...Blue belts could defeat a white belt, but not a green belt...and so on...Blue belts would never qualify for the level required of the Olympics...

I didn't think I'd say this (on the original thread I hoped she'd be flattened), but I do feel a slight tinge of pity for her.

She's only sixteen, doesn't look very bright, and lives in *Saudi Arabia.* I would bet she was given absolutely *no choice* whatsoever, and obeyed her father.

What *is* very curious, is why she was allowed to take up the sport at all, given what we know of women's status in Saudi. Are there Judo clubs for women in Saudi ? How and why did she become interested in it ? Why did her father allow her to become involved in it in the first place ?

And has he sold his daughter for it, and will he take her life when it's expedient to do so ?

I would be curious to know what effect if any this girl's appearance makes among women in Saudi Arabia.

I watched a 100m race with an Afghan woman participating with her head cover, long sleeve T-shirt, shorts and stocking under the shorts. Needless to say she came in very last though not pathetic like this blue belt Judo student. I hope that humiliating defeat and ridiculousness of her attire against those magnificent bodies of female athletes, would help ignite fire in her which she take home to her sisters.

Methinks I have seen more than one of the black athletes at these Olympics making **the sign of the cross**.

I'm pretty sure I saw the Ethiopian lady doing it, as she went sailing down the straight to win the women's marathon.

And I think I saw one of the Jamaican gentlemen doing it, too.

(I attend an Anglican church which includes some members of a 'High Church' persuasion, so I have learnt to recognise this particular gesture; it is unmistakeable).
