Afghanistan National Police murder six more of their NATO "allies"

I'm eagerly awaiting the presser by Gen Allen or that ISAF German Brig Gen on this matter. For a soldier on his 3rd or 4th tour in Iraq/Afghan, this is no way to go. I mean the lifer/NCO's.

The British soldiers were of 3rd Battalion, the Yorkshire Regiment (Duke of Wellington's).

The four killed at the checkpoint are reported to be US soldiers.

Afghanistan has killed the soldiers and wiped out the treasuries of multiple great powers that had the idiocy to try to occupy it: the Greece of Alexander the Great, Britain of Queen Victoria, USSR, and now the United States.

It's not like there wasn't ample historical precedence when George Bush, one of the most ignorant and shallow of US Presidents, sent troops to topple the Afghan government and install a puppet regime. As detailed in books like Cobra II on Iraq, the Bush administration systematically ignored any opposing views within the military, and systematically denigrated any external critics like Joe Wilson.

As a result, in both Iraq and Afghanistan, the option of a quick attack to topple the government, and then pulling out, was not considered. It is likely that Saddam and the Taliban would both have eventually made their ways back to power, but much more sensitive to the displeasure of the United States government.

Machiavelli in the 16th century wrote that occupying a foreign country was and would be the ruin of countless princes (rulers). There is virtually nothing you can do to satisfy an angry, occupied territory. Stalin had one solution, which was to deport or wipe out the entire native populations. A far better, much more ethical solution is to simply neutralize the government that happens to be in place through the implicit, or explicit, threat of attack. Germany successfully kept Switzerland and Sweden, major potential threats, neutral during World War II.

The only possible threat that Afghanistan holds to a modern country is by serving as a base of conspirators, such as al-Qaeda. The initial attack by US forces cost the Taliban the majority of their soldiers. It is likely the Taliban would not have continued to play host to al Qaeda if they had regained power after US withdrawal. If China or Pakistan or Iran wants to occupy Afghanistan, they should be encouraged to do so.

My biggest fear is that Romney will choose to extend the US occupation of Afghanistan. Other than that, I would pretty much support him. If he gave even a hint that he would extend the occupation, I would unhappily not only vote for Obama, but send him contributions.

And yes. I know Obama is going to appoint Supreme Court justices likely to continue the corruption of the US Constitution. One has to choose one's evil. I think the mindless military involvement of the US in the Muslim world is by far the biggest threat.

During the Viet Nam conflict the VC feared the Korean forces because they just came out of their war and knew that you can't re-educate a Communist.
The Korean troops had no mercy when torturing a commie and didn't care about killing one in the field because
allow them to live was one more chance for a VC to come back to battle and kill them .

This is what I expect from Obama, but I still can't believe it!
Under Obama, all of our military missions are suicide missions - how very Muslim of him.

Addressing anyone here who knows a soldier serving in Afghanistan, or who knows a returned soldier (home on leave, or invalided out, or who has left the army but is, perhaps, in the Veterans' Association).

And get it into the hands of your soldier son/ brother/ cousin/ nephew/ uncle/ father/ husband/ fiance/ colleague/ neighbour or co-religionist (that is, the returned or on-leave soldier who worships at your church/ temple/ synagogue).

The knowledge in that essay, taken to heart even by a humble private or sergeant, could save their own lives and/ or the lives of others.

Pull our troops out. Afghanistan is Viet Nam all over. The desk bound idiots in Washington are governing how the war is being fought. Politicians in charge of war, they can't even govern themselves without scandal let alone a shooting war, where our military are getting wounded and killed. War is HELL, but why change a people who want no change. Leave the Afghans alone to suffer their own self prescribed abuse at the hands of backward thinking lunatics and despots. Spray "Agent Orange" on their poppy fields so they can't pollute the world with their dope.
