The petition is really not necessary - punitive measures for "speech" that Islam finds offensive is already in effect, in this country. A quick check with Molly Norris or Nakoula's family, will confirm as much.

Free speech should be limited only when creating havoc which is understandably immediate, for instance yelling "fire" in a crowded theatre when there is no fire. Free speech should never be limited because those offended by it are ready to maim or kill. Maybe we need more mockery of Muhammad & Islam, not less.

This is just the sort of petition that the O and his court would welcome, given their apparent problems with the First Amendment. It suggests that limits on free speech go beyond yelling "fire" in a crowded building, and strike at the very heart of the citizen's right to exercise a critical judgment towards various political and ideological positions. It would mesh very nicely with proposed "hate speech" legislation and jurisprudence, and i n so doing, spell the end of meaningful citizenship for large sections of the American population.

As a Christian who hears insults towards and misrepresentations of his religion on a nearly daily basis, I would much prefer to have the right to give an account of the hope I have, even if it means angering the hearer. Granted, if this sort of legislation might pass, I could conceivably make a mint were I to comb through Hollywood's recent productions and sue, sue, sue ever company that ever made anything less than respectful (and I'll include sappy and smarmy in the less-than-respectful category) towards my religion. However,this would invite counter-suit and tie up courts forever in cases that seek to define ever more precise limits on free speech and free exercise all while ignoring serious matters of public peace and justice.

Further, such limits on free speech would further erode our ability to be frank and honest with each other. Imagine the trouble that would arise if an employer had to sack an employee who just happened to fit some negative stereotype of his demographic! We would become a nation whose language dripped with euphemism, tongue-in-cheek expressions, and insincerity.

Is this a surprise? Hardly

In a core Islamic text, Muhammad says there is to be no punishment for murdering someone who insults him

From Sunan Abu-Dawud, a canonical hadith collection:

Narrated Abdullah Ibn Abbas:

A blind man had a slave-mother [a slave who bore children for him] who used to abuse the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) and disparage him. He [the blind man] forbade her but she did not stop. He rebuked her but she did not give up her habit. One night she began to slander the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) and abuse him. So he [the blind man] took a dagger, placed it on her belly, pressed it, and killed her. A child who came between her legs was smeared with the blood that was there. When the morning came, the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) was informed about it.

He assembled the people and said: I adjure by Allah the man who has done this action and I adjure him by my right to him that he should stand up. Jumping over the necks of the people and trembling the man stood up.

He sat before the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) and said: Apostle of Allah! I am her master; she used to abuse you and disparage you. I forbade her, but she did not stop, and I rebuked her, but she did not abandon her habit. I have two sons like pearls from her, and she was my companion. Last night she began to abuse and disparage you. So I took a dagger, put it on her belly and pressed it till I killed her.

Thereupon the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Oh be witness, no retaliation is payable for her blood.

A Jewess used to abuse the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) and disparage him. A man strangled her till she died. The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) declared that no recompense was payable for her blood.

The hadith links in my above comment do not seem to work. It appears that the University of Southern California website hosting the hadith has yet again changed the web addresses for each hadith.

Perhaps it's paranoia on my part, but I can't help thinking they do this because of all the Islam-critical websites that link to the USC hadith database. Now all those links no longer work. If one is a little bit computer-code savvy, it's not that hard to update all the links, but it takes a little time.

Actually there's quite a lot that the petitioners don't understand, beginning with their own ignorance.

(1) They don't understand that the President of the U.S.A. can't change the constitution by making a public announcement. (After all, Mohammed changed the "world's first constitution" in Medina the first minute it didn't suit him - which took less than two years.)

(2) They don't understand that "protecting freedom of speech" means protecting unpopular and offensive speech.

(3) They don't understand the difference between speech that incites violence in its supporters and speech that elicits violence from its opponents.

(4) They don't understand that people who threaten violence every time they are "offended" are bullies and that bullies are the exact people who should never be allowed to make the rules. (After all, Mohammed was a very big bully.)

I'm not at this stage worried about the petition because its folly is clear to any thinking person. So far there are only 155 signatures.

For one, I don't believe that 'everyone' does respect freedom of speech, certainly not the ppl who signed this petition. If they did, they wouldn't make such a ridiculous claim that freedom of speech should only be upheld as long as Muslims aren't being insulted. And yet, I don't ever see any Muslims or Muslim apologists becoming incensed when their imams incite violence against Jews. The ONLY limit to Free Speech, should be the Truth!

As even Aristotle noted long ago, slander is only pre-judice, and vice-versa; presenting accusatory opinions as if they were facts (making accusations against someone else, BEFORE having the facts straight)! And that breaks the Golden Rule of Law (to not attack first)!

Of course, aggressively chanting or yelling a truth at someone in a threatening manner ALSO breaks the Golden Rule, because all threats are psychological attacks (aka: coercion, duress, extortion, “terrorism”) and all non-defensive attacks are crimes.

But ‘threatening’ a criminal with his just punishments, after he’s already committed his crimes, isn’t a theat so much as a promise!

The only other way speech should be limited, is if it incites un-just violence against innocent others (as opposed to legislators and police chiefs calling for violence against those who have already attacked innocent others, as in if they call for the death-penalty, for instance).

The Defense of Truth should always apply.

And all religions are lies. Here’s the most simple, obvious differences between philosophy, science, and religion:

1). Philosophy is speculation, presented AS speculation.
2). Science is tested speculation, presented AS tested speculation.
3). Religion is speculation, presented AS fact.

So all religions are lies, and thus crimes (lying is only the most basic form of theft – it’s the theft of the Truth, and theft IS crime)!

BUT, that being said, there’s still a VAST difference between what islam and all the other indoctrinating ‘religious’ cultures tell to their people, and the obvious, predictable results:

We obey the Golden Rule of Law, by simply defining all situational morality as: “Do Not Attack First!” (and “THOU SHALT NOT KILL!”) which enables trust, progress, and Civilization.

So, while at best religions offer advice based on metaphysical speculations and observations of human psychology, and all ‘real’ religions, at WORST, only say:
