New book explores whether Muhammad was myth or fact

Did Muhammad Exist?.jpg

This morning UPI has a story about my last book, Did Muhammad Exist?: "New book explores whether Muhammad was myth or fact," from United Press International, September 3:

Author Robert Spencer is a bit puzzled: Why has there been so little effort to verify the historicity of the life of Muhammad and the events surrounding the creation of the Koran?

Could it be Muhammad was not a single individual but a composite of several people and the Koran more of a political manifesto made up of warmed-over older religious tracts?

"I think that it is certain there was nobody who was like the prophet of Islam we read about in the hadiths [the collective body of traditions relating to Muhammad and the Koran]," said Spencer, who wrote the recently published "Did Muhammad Exist?"

"There is no way to tell who or what was really done. Muhammad was supposed to have lived and united Arabia but there's no historical evidence," he told UPI in a telephone interview.

The book highlights anomalies in the historical record kept by non-Muslims of the 7th and 8th centuries.

Chief among Spencer's concerns are the contradictions about the Koran's compilation, the relative importance of Muhammad's tribe, the Quraysh, and whether Mecca really was the center of trade Islamic tradition makes it out to be.

Spencer is not alone in doubting the canonical account.

The BBC last week broadcast "Islam, the Untold Story," in which historian Tom Holland cast doubt on the traditional story. Holland's examination of whether Islam was handed down whole or evolved over time brought immediate reaction from the Muslim youth organization the Ramadhan Foundation in London, which called the broadcast a mockery.

"There is a desire amongst some people trying to change or discredit Islam, whether it's politicians, commentators or broadcasters like Channel 4. The British Muslim community will not allow Channel 4 to distort our faith and our history," Ramadhan Foundation chief executive Mohammed Shafiq said in a news release, demanding an apology.

Spencer, who wrote an earlier book about the life of Muhammad, "The Truth About Muhammad," said Muslims also have dismissed his work as an attack on Islam and threatened him with violence, although no formal fatwas have been issued.

Spencer suggests Islam could have been founded by Christian heretics who rejected Jesus' divinity and wanted to turn back the clock to a time before Judaism and Christianity became established religions.

There is a story in Jewish lore that says a rabbinical decision denying a proposal to make camel meat kosher is what prompted an angry Muhammad to create a new religion in the early 600s.

"I'd never heard that one," Spencer said. "But there no doubt was antagonism between [early Muslims] and the rabbis. Whatever happened, there were some bitter disputes with Jewish groups. ... It does seem clear there was some attempt [by early Muslims] to identify themselves with Judaism, as an extension of Judaism, an offshoot. When they were rejected by the Jews, they [Muslims] turned against them."...

There is more.

. .''brought immediate reaction from the chief executive of the Ramadhan Foundation, Mohammed Shafiq, DEMANDING AN APOLOGY ''. .

What a characteristic reaction.

Robert, it looks as if they're taking notice of your work. Congratulations!

However, I wouldn't put much stock in historical criticism of a sacred story getting Islam to reject violence. Developments in Christianity that culminated in such things as political contract, rule of law, respect for individual liberty, and eschewal of compulsion are present in the Bible itself. Deuteronomy 17, the development of Israelite history from the conquest of Canaan to the Babylonian exile, and the writings of the prophets all inculcate the idea that divine law is higher than the will of the king. Samuel's warning against the "manner of a king" (mishpat hammelek--I Sam. 8) suggests that kingship is not necessary for and possibly inimical to the people of God. That David must make a covenant with the elders of Israel as well as receive anointing from Samuel (cf. II Sam. 5) is the germ of political compact. Further, the whole history of Israel in exile and the primitive church is one that reassures us that Christianity (and Judaism) can survive without political power.

Also, speaking as a Christian about Christianity, I cannot help but note that the way Jesus Christ brought salvation through his obedience unto death, even that of the cross (somewhere in Philippians, off the top of my head) and his resurrection from the dead indicate that for Christians, the enemies to be overcome are far bigger than those unbelieving people over the next hill or even the Roman Empire. Paul is clear that it is against the principalities and powers of the spiritual realm against whom Jesus Christ triumphed. The ending of Matthew, the flow of the New Testament narrative, and the teachings of the Apostles are all clear that our victory lies not in the humiliation or death of the unbeliever, but in his conversion.

The sacred story for Christians exalts peace and warns us to refrain from putting our confidence in princes (Psalm 146). Hence, liberalism of the original, Locke-to-Acton type grew up on Christian ground and took its nourishment from Christian Scripture itself--NOT from 19th century German criticism thereof (much of which went into the narrative of 20th century totalitarianism).

But the Qur'an is from beginning to end a manual for conquest, and the way both it and the Hadith make Muhammad, warts and all (from the perspective of Christians, and, I suppose, Jews as well) an exemplar. Hence, I continue to believe in the historicity of Muhammad as the uniter of Arabia (much as Qin Shi Huang was the uniter of ancient China), and the Qur'an, whether it borrows from earlier Christian texts or not, as propaganda for a successful warlord. Muhammad's very fallibility remains, for me, clear evidence of his historicity, and makes his own hand having a role in the shaping and composition of the Qur'an all the more likely.

Still, I respect your scholarship.

Dude, just a suggestion. Using words like eschewel, inculcate and inimical is counterproductive. It alienates the reader. You may sound intelligent, but you tend to lose your audience. Say what's on your mind in a succinct manner without the lavish lexicon. It's more honest that way. By the way, I believe that islam is the evil anti-religion that god warned us about in the biblical prophesies. Is that what you were trying to say?

OK, "Dude". Liberalism (of the Locke-to-Acton type) and social contract grew out of Christian soil, while nothing in Islam supports any kind of politics except for the higher gangsterism.

How's that?

Please have a little mercy on a gray-headed, wrinkled, slightly arthritic grandfather who sat under Mrs. Kosofsky in 11th grade English (if she is dead, alah hasholom; if she's still alive, may she enjoy as many more years in the absolute best of health). There, we were encouraged to build our vocabularies through reading and to use new words in writing. My love of the written word took off in those far-off, not-so-innocent days (it was the beginning of the Sillier 'Seventies, after all), and it has stuck with me.

May I make a suggestion? Buy a dictionary. You can use it with a flashlight when the power's out and you can't get online.

Besides, I was reacting to Robert's post, and while I've never met him face to face, I suspect he's a fairly literate type in more than one language.

I apologize. And I agree with your comments. I myself am an English teacher living and working in Volgograd (Stalingrad), Russia. I often discuss form verses content with my students. Sorry, I didn't mean to offend you.

I like your book Mr. Spencer. Your main argument against the historicity of Mohammed seems to be the lack of contemporary evidence and the long delay before stories about him arose. However, there may be a counter argument which you do not seem to have considered, and it was not advanced by Mr. Wood in your video debate.

Recently I came across another book, 'Mohammed and Charlemagne Revisited' by Emmet Scott. He points to the extreme paucity of archaeological evidence, throughout Europe, North Africa and the Middle East for the period from the mid seventh to the mid tenth centuries, and the resumption of very similar cultural forms after that gap. He refers to the radical idea suggested by Heribert Illig (and others) that the missing centuries simply did not exist. To quote from page 225, "According to him, the three centuries stretching from 614 to 911 never existed at all; they were phantom years inserted into the calender by the Emperor Otto around 1000. Thus for Illig all history after the tenth/eleventh century needs to be backdated by almost three centuries."

That would close the gap.

When I worked at both Purdue, my alum, and U od Minnesota and I had the opportunity to hire international students, I encouraged them to get a hold of Reader's Digest and learn the word power section. To my thinking this is a very good, low impact, method of growing words. The real stretch is to listen to William F. Buckley. Now, there's a guy who can talk English.
As a student of history I am amazed at the tenacity of life in Russia. What was done to the Russian people by, first the Nazis and also their own government under Stalin is worthy of study and remembrance by all of us alive today.

Apology accepted. But you're looking for "versus" rather than "verses" (the plural of "verse"). You see, I also teach ESOL. How's Volgograd?

Thanks Kepha. Your right, I can't spell. I majored in Molecular Biology 30 years ago and ended up working as a surgical nurse for 23 years before coming to Russia. Volgograd is Volgograd. The electricity goes off quite often by the way, and Russian grammar is a bitch. I suspect we will talk again. Next time I will try to stay on topic. I've always enjoyed the intellectual caliber of Robert Spencer and many of his commentators. Spelling aside, I hope to contribute some perspectives of my own. Tcs.

Historical aside: If you google “rodina mat zovyot” and click on images, you will see a statue that is approximately twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty. It's on the top of a hill in Volgograd (formally called Stalingrad). This particular hill was taken and retaken 13 times during the battle of Stalingrad by Russian and German troops. This hill is approximately 100,000 square meters in area. Approximately 100,000 soldiers died on this hill during the battles. That's one casualty of war for every square meter. Imagine.
