Syriac Catholic Patriarch: EU doesn't care about fate of Christians in the Middle East

"Otherwise they would advocate equality before the law and the observance of human rights for all." But no one particularly cares about such principles anymore.

"Beirut Patriarch: EU Doesn't Care About the Fate of Christians in the Middle East," by Jurgen Liminski for Aid to the Church via AINA, August 27:

The west's attitude to the Syrian conflict was described as "hypocrisy" and sharply criticised by the Patriarch of the Syriac Catholic Church in Beirut, Ignatius Ephrem Joseph III. "For many governments it's merely a matter of economic interests. They don't really care about the fate of the Christians in the Middle East. Otherwise they would advocate equality before the law and the observance of human rights for all, including in those countries where the so-called Arab Spring has not taken place", the Beirut Patriarch claims in an interview with the international Catholic charity "Aid to the Church in Need". It's primarily a matter of safeguarding freedom of conscience and religion for all. But this equality before the law does not exist. "It is this that seriously threatens our survival throughout the region", the head of the Syriac Catholic Church stressed.

Below we publish the interview with His Beatitude Ignatius Ephrem Joseph III., Patriarch of the Syriac Catholic Church in the Middle East and one of the seven Patriarchs in this region.

Interview with His Beatitude Ignatius Ephrem Joseph III., Patriarch of the Syriac Catholic Church in the Middle East and one of the seven Patriarchs in this region. The Syriac Catholic Church is one of the 18 faith communities in Lebanon recognised in the Lebanese constitution. The interview was conducted by Jürgen Liminski.

Q) Your Beatitude, we hear a lot about the situation of the Christian refugees and the tensions in Lebanon. That's one side of the picture. The other is the political aspect of the Christian presence in Lebanon and in the Middle East. Is this presence at risk?

A) Patriarch Ignatius Ephrem Joseph III.: "The situation of the Christians in Lebanon differs fundamentally from that of the Christians in the other countries of the Middle East. The constitution recognises 18 official religious communities, eleven of which are Christian. But the main concern everywhere is that of human rights. There's no lack of money and also no lack of vocations. We are being put under pressure by those who wish to recognise only one single religion. We Christians do not demand any special rights; we only want the same rights as everybody else. We want freedom of conscience, we want freedom of religious worship, and we also want freedom for those who don't believe anything. This equality before the law does not exist. It is this that seriously threatens our survival throughout the region."

Q) If only it were merely a matter of legal questions, that would be tolerable. But what is the practical situation?

A) Patriarch Ignatius Ephrem Joseph III.: "No. The legal questions determine our practical life. They are the framework for human dignity. Our young people don't want to beg for the right to work and live in their own country. In Iraq they ask me: What should we do? Where are we still safe? And it terms of practical living it's like this: When a young man, a Christian, falls in love with a Muslim woman and she loves him, he has to become a Muslim in order to marry her. Where is the freedom of faith there? Another example: We now have a family from Iran here and they want to be baptised. But in doing this they are risking their lives. Where is the freedom of religion there? Islam does not tolerate a change of faith. There is a similar situation in Turkey. There you can see what follows when freedom only exists on paper. The goods of Christians have been confiscated and many churches have been destroyed. But the Christians were in Asia Minor before the Muslims. Rights are also officially recognised in Iraq, but nobody protects them, nobody does anything against the persecution of Christians. And now Syria. Our presence is also under threat there."

Q) Are you on Assad's side?

A) Patriarch Ignatius Ephrem Joseph III.: "We're on nobody's side. I repeat: We only want the same rights as everybody else. If anything, we're on the side of the Syrian people. But if one doesn't speak out against Assad nowadays it's taken to mean that one's on his side. Do you know who they all are on the other side and whether these forces will recognise civil rights and the Charter of the United Nations?"

Q) Is the European Union wrong in supporting the rebels?

A) Patriarch Ignatius Ephrem Joseph III.: "Permit me to speak quite frankly. There's a lot of hypocrisy in all this. For many governments it's merely a matter of economic interests. They don't really care about the fate of the Christians in the Middle East. Otherwise they would advocate equality before the law and the observance of human rights for all, including in those countries where the so-called Arab Spring has not taken place. More than a year ago we said that the Arab Spring would result in chaos and civil war. This is not a matter of taking sides for or against Assad or some other potentate in the region. It's a matter of equal rights for all. It's a matter of the primacy of human rights and not the primacy of one religion. Integration and living side-by-side are only possible if this primacy is respected. I said it to the government in Paris and I'll say it to you: Fundamental Islam does not want a dialogue on equal terms in the long run. If the EU were serious about its human rights principles they would openly take up the cause of the future of younger generations in the region. Let's put it like this: there's a lot of economic opportunism around."

Q) Is it any different in the Middle East?

A) Patriarch Ignatius Ephrem Joseph III.: "No. The refugees who are turning up now are telling us: We trust only the Church. They come mainly from the large towns, Aleppo, Homs and Damascus. That's where they are in danger. Most of them want to move on to America, Greece, Australia or Europe. Especially the middle class who still have some reserves. They're looking for countries where they are equal before the law."

Those are rapidly vanishing.

They don't care about non-muslims -atheists, hindus, christians, sikhs, jews... etc -, they only care about intolerant, racist, bigoted... etc. muslims. Just look what happened with Safarov.

The EU is a predominantly leftist club dedicated to sabotaging and destroying the West's miserable little house from within. They are the Non-Muslim Brotherhood. Most appropriate on their flag would be a picture of a termite.

Non-Muslim Brotherhood--

Good one!

Most appropriate on their flag would be a picture of a termite---

The appropiate logo, flag would be a swastika, eagle & fasces, hammer & sickle and a star and crescent. All of these in front of a black background a la Al-Qaeda, black for synonym of obscurantism/darkness.

He's right. In the European union, Muslims = good, Christians = bad.

He's right. In the European union, Muslims = good, Christians = bad.

Dear Ignatius Ephrem Joseph III:

Speaking as one Christian (albeit Evangelical Protestant) to another, the EU is most emphatically NOT the Res Publica Christiana. It is dominated by Social Democrats and lightly chastened Communists whose attitude towards Christianity has always been "Ecrassez L'Infame!" (after Voltaire). Look for international concern and support elsewhere than in the EU and Obama's America.

Kepha

This is all considered 'Islamophobic' now!!

They will let that place empty of Christians before they offend Islam's values - or laws that put Muslims above all others under the law.

Equality under the law - is in defiance of Islam's basic principles. [Koran 9:29 - spells it out pretty clearly!]

It's God's will that non-Muslims should not enjoy equality with Muslims.

If it was a colour thing - such as in South Africa - the same people who would called for equality for all there - would run 10 miles - in the path of oncoming traffic - not to deal with similar challenges - in the Muslim world with - those who are non-Muslim.

+++

The restrictions on marriage in Syria - are designed to eliminate all other religious groups.

Video: 2 different Christians try to marry - would be forced to convert to Islam first:

http://youtu.be/739E3Z78V6E

+++

The idea there could be some suggestion - that this is how Islam has traditionally maintained its dominance - would require an acknowledgement of actually events - they would need to get in a Muslim interpretor - as they would feel they could not fully comprehend this on their own.

- But first and foremost any advocacy for ME Christian rights would be weighed against offending Islam - and even the Universal Declaration of Human Rights couldn't stand in the way of the task at hand.

::

They made a mistake - they supported a religion - when what they should have done is supported people - regardless of race or religion. Now they find themselves hemmed in - by their own rhetoric - with a religion - that has no interest in equality and respect for the fundamental rights of man - except where it is a Muslim and the advancement of Islamic interests are concerned.

People actively supporting oppressed Christians in the Mohammedan nations are a tiny group -- and a group that doesn't include any gov'ts I know of.

The world doesn't change very much.

The grandchildren of the people who ignored the plight of Jews in Nazi Germany are now ignoring the plight of Israel, and more to the point, the plight of oppressed Christians and other minorities across the Mohammedan region of influence.

The only reason Israel even gets mentioned in the news is because they cause trouble by hanging together and fighting back. Otherwise they'd be forgotten too.

The Maronite Christians in Lebanon, right next door to Israel, have been forgotten since they stopped fighting back as a united group. But they haven't stopped suffering and disappearing. It's just that most people don't care. And they'll ignore the situation as long as there isn't much noise of gunfire.

Hell. Most churches won't even raise a prayer for the sake of Christians suffering just for being Christian.

Indeed, Israel was there, in Beirut exactly 30 years ago, having just liberated Lebanon's Christians. And it was a true Liberation, not the bloody travesty that our United States of America has visited on the misfortunate Christians of Iraq. Euphoria was in the air. The ecstatic surviving Christians of Damour held a thanksgiving Mass in the rubble of their church, safe for the first time in years, after thousands of their neighbors had been torture-murdered by the Palestinians. Thousands of wartime romances had blossomed between beautiful Lebanese women and brave Israeli soldiers. But the American Degenerate just wouldn't be the American Degenerate if he didn't do his damnest to ruin it all. The Christian President of Lebanon was assassinated by terrorists on Sep. 14, 1982, exactly 30 years ago in 11 days, and IMMEDIATELY the unholy crew of Reagan's puppeteers had sent the God-accursed Morris Draper to the surviving government of Lebanon to persuade them that Israel has already done all the work for them and is no longer needed. That Israel is now a LIABILITY to them. That any association with it "harms their prestige with the rest of the Arab countries". And so, the American advice to them: DISTANCE YOURSELVES FROM ISRAEL. DUMP ISRAEL. END THE RELATIONSHIP. RELY ON US. WE ARE IN, ISRAEL IS OUT.
Not knowing what their American "friends" were doing behind their backs, the Israelis called on the Lebanese government to send regular Lebanese Army troops to disarm the terrorists in the so-called "refugee camps" Sabra and Shatilla where the emboldened heavily armed terrorists were already renewing jihad and shooting at the Israeli soldiers with hundreds of weapons. In the past, such cooperation worked like dream. On Aug. 23, just 3 weeks earlier, Israel surrounded another "refugee camp", Burj el-Barajneh, the Lebanese Army went in and took it over without a shot fired. Hundreds of terrorists were arrested and hundreds of tons of advanced weaponry captured in huge underground weapons depos.
But this time, to Israel's shock, the Lebanese government was uncooperative and even hostile. Not knowing who were behind this inexplicable change of attitude, Israel tried again and again, to no avail. Meanwhile, the Lebanese Chrisian Phalangist militia had inserted themselves into the vacuum and went into the "camps". Now, 30 years after the explosion of the shrill hysteria over the massacre, all the facts of the incident are known. 460 people were killed in the chaotic night fighting, including 20 women and 15 children. Most of the rest were terrorists. Most of the worst terrorists fled to another "camp", Fakahani. On their way, they invaded residences and murdered hundreds of Lebanese civilians, and took their ID's in order to hide.
The religious-felonious Reagan cult seized on this incident to get rid of Israel, blaming it for the "massacre". Our abominable American media exploded in a shrill anti-Israeli hysteria. And the European media were even worse, far worse. Whenever our American media sink to their lowest, the European media drop 10 degrees of abomination lower. You cannot out-lousy those people. You can't.
Next, the Reagan cult had sent us marines to expell Israel from Beirut, to let all the terrorists back in, and to be blown up by the very same terrorists whom they had benefited so tremendously by expelling Israel from Beirut. Reagan then ordered the surviving marines to just run away. Lebanon fell under the reign of the Muslims who had renewed jihad on the much-suffered Christians of Lebanon, mass-murdering 50,000 more of them and forcing tens of thousands of others to flee the country.
It is horrible how a total catastrophe befalls Christians everywhere our us military set foot to "set things right", be it Lebanon in 1982, the Balkans in the 1990's or Iraq now. The severe imbecility of all our us presidents, republican and democrat. The cowardice. The amorality.
We, the Resistance, should organize into a third party, people of various religions and ethnicities united under the glorious Blue Star of Zionism and drive both rotten parties out of power.
Zionism, and only Zionism can save this country.
Zionism, and only Zionism can save Western civilization.

Ruslan Tokhchukov, EnragedSince1999.

What the Beirut Patriarch says about the EU CAN ALSO BE SAID ABOUT THE US. The West simply no longer care what happens to Christians in the Middle East, or anywhere else!

You are right to be enraged. The West has stabbed Middle East Christians in the back again and again. The West is at it again, supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafis gaining power in multiple countries in the Middle East. This is the biggest strategic miscalculation by the West since the 1500's, along with Europe’s Euro-Arab Dialog which over the past 40 years has opened Europe to mass Muslim invasion. I spent most of my life believing in Western civilization but near the end of my life I see the West for what it has become — ignorant, deceptive, propelled by self-hatred, digging its own grave. It is no longer worthy of its inheritance.

Just because it may look that way *now*, doesn't necessarily mean that things have to stay that way.

Despair is one of the Seven Deadly Sins.

Christendom has had people reading the burial rites over it for centuries.

Do you believe in a God who raises the dead, or don't you?

Me, I prefer to pray: for each of the cities of Europe; and specifically, as an act of filial piety, and also as a defiant act of faith, for the countries my ancestors came from: Scotland, Ireland, England, Germany, Denmark. I will pray for the churches and the cities; for rebirth and renewal, for the rediscovery of grace, for the affirmation of life.

Then, too, I will pray for fruit from the seed-sowing of Francis Schaeffer's L'Abri community, and Brother Roger's Taize, and I will, especially, pray for the Barnabas Fund's 'Operation Nehemiah'.
