Syrian General: "Don't they understand that we are the last dam that is holding back the flood of Islamists in Europe? What blindness."

Any Western analyst who takes notice of this at all will scoff at it, but actually the General is probably right. After Assad falls and an Islamic supremacist, pro-Sharia regime takes power in Egypt, the Islamic supremacists will control a huge expanse stretching from Tunisia to Syria and into Iraq. What could be next but Europe?

The Assad regime has been thoroughly detestable; however, the coming Islamic supremacist regime will be even worse for the nation's Christians, as has been abundantly established by repeated rebel actions against them, and will ultimately bode even worse for the U.S., Europe and Israel than the Assads.

"Syrian General: We're Protecting Europe from Islamists," from AFP, September 6 (thanks to Block Ness):

A Syrian general in charge of operations in west Aleppo has told AFP that Europeans are exhibiting "blindness" in supporting the rebels against President Bashar Assad's regime. Assad's forces are "the last dam that is holding back the flood of Islamists in Europe," he said....

The general, a member of the army's elite Republican Guard, is running the regime's operations in some of the most brutal battles in the city.

"We must take the terrorist-held areas, while minimizing the destruction to the city and keep the civilian population on our side," said the 53-year-old, using the regime's standard term for the rebels....

"We have in front of us terrorists who occupy land with gunmen carrying out ambushes, or bombings," said the colonel. "We should therefore first check the buildings, and then defuse the bombs to ensure that the area is safe."

Since early August, the army has deployed is elite units to Aleppo. The Republican Guard is responsible for retaking the west of the city and special forces have been tasked with the centre.

Over the past two weeks, they have wrested control of the Christian neighborhood of Judeidah, in Aleppo's old city, and are advancing on Sayyed Ali....

"There are some Syrians from the north and the countryside near Aleppo (among the rebels), but many are foreigners -- Chechens, Turks, Afghans, Libyans and Tunisians," he claimed, holding out identity papers that appeared to be Turkish.

Of Western, and particularly European, attitudes to the battles, he voiced disbelief.

"Don't they understand that we are the last dam that is holding back the flood of Islamists in Europe," he asked. "What blindness."

The 'last dam'??

Not the last.

The other - and more reliable - 'dam' is...ISRAEL.

I am sorry to hear Mr. Robert Spencer, whose work I really respect, fall into the trap of the Syrian regime. I am Lebanese Christian and no regime has supported Islamists and jihadists more than the Assad regime, from Fath al-Islam, to Hezbollah, to the al-Quaeda in Iraq, to Jund el Sham, etc etc...

yes there are jihadists in Syria, but there weren't any in the first three months of the uprising when it was peacefull and Assad was murdering the protesters at will. the jihadists in syria will be much easier to deal with after Assad is gone than when he is using them in a cynical way.

Syria is Shia ruling majority Sunnis. It is an ally of Iran, which is on way to be a nuclear nation. Syria could be trifurcated into Sunni, Shia and Joint Christian/Druze area. Then we already have Bosnia, Kosovo etc in Europe. Serbia is dam there.

What we have in Syria is a war between Hizbollah and its umbrellas and Al-Qaeda and its umbrellas, let them kill each other. The west should help non-muslims escape Syria, but of course... that's not happening, most of the west is supporting the sunnies, Al-Qaeda and its allies and non-muslims are getting the worst part from all this, what a surprise!.

I happen to agree with you on this. If RR is genuin in what he/she is saying, she has mixed up state sponsor of terrosim with the Jihadists and Islamists who are 100% for suppressing minorities in any country that they rule. minorities are so squeezed in islamic countries. I can tell you with 100% as I was just in Iran a month ago. minorities in iran are marginalized to say the least and some of them Bahais are often arrested, executed and are not allowed to attend school of any kind. they live in fear day in and day out. the fact that Iran had the largest population of jews out side of the middle east before the revulution and it is down to 20000 or so speaks volume.
M

Robert, I can understand why RR dislikes the Baathist Syrian regime, they occupied Lebanon and supported various jihadist groups there. However I do agree with you that the Syrian rebels are worse than Assad.

This is a war between sunni islamic supremacists vs shiite islamic supremacists. You cannot forget who is backing and helping Assad and his henchmen: Iran and Hizboallah. And remember what Wafa Sultan and other Syrians(non-muslims and apostates) have always said about living in Syria, even under Assad rule. You cannot support either group, just think about non-muslims, those are the only one who need help.

@lanastaslem

Not only did they occupied Lebanon but thanks to Syria -and Iran- now Hizboallah runs that country, they own that place completely.

Bottom line: The Assad regime is despicable but those who would replace the Assad regime are even more despicable. Ah, again can be seen the wonderful choices the Islamic world offers up. For the ultimate reason here look no further than Islam itself why this is so.

"jihadists in syria will be much easier to deal with after Assad is gone"
History is littered with people who thought they could "deal with" Jihadists.
This reminds me of Winston Churcill's "You cannot negotiate with Herr Hitler".
There are those who "get it" and those who don't.
It would seem this Syrian General has insight lacking to US Admin. (And Europe).

From the novel 'Exodus', by Leon Uris.

'"..You know that even when I was a little girl in Denmark I asked myself why I was born a Jew.

"I know the answer now.

"God didn't pick us because we were weak or would run from danger.

"We've taken murder and sorrow and humiliation for six thousand years and we have kept faith.

""We have outlived everyone who has tried to destroy us...

"...this little land was chosen for us because it is the crossroads of the world, on the edge of man's wilderness.

"This is where God wants His people to be...on the frontiers, to stand and guard His laws which are the cornerstones of man's moral existence.

Where else is there for us to be?"

"Israel stands with its back to the wall", Kitty cried. "It has always stood that way and it always will...with savages trying to destroy you".

"Oh no, Kitty, no! Israel is the bridge between darkness and light".'

My posting with the Leon Uris quote is intended as a follow-on to my initial posting on this thread at 2.22 pm, above.

Leon Uris certainly understood Islam, as shown by his novel The Haj.

A desperate futile plea. Syria, like Egypt and Libya, will soon fall into the hands of Islamic fundamentalists. Unlike Europe, we have two great oceanic devides and a lesson well learned, on liberal European immigration.

Syria stood too close to Iran - they might have thought they were out front - but they were mostly eclipsed.

It's this versus the Islamic Sunni faction that's moved in.

It's a proxy war that could go on for years - it's too risky to stop [with western forces] and too problematic to ignore completely.

"Syrian General: We're Protecting Europe from Islamists,"

Is this guy SERIOUS? Nothing that happens in Syria will prevent Europe from being flooded with Islamists. That was set in motion decades ago. Whether Assad is replaced or not, whether the terrorists win or not, will have no effect on Europe's future. Islamists are already in Europe.

Yep.

The devil's bargain by a bunch of gutless - and Jew-hating - cowards was made in the early-mid 1970s.

Bat Ye'or: New Evidence on Eurabia

I decided over a year ago to follow Israel's lead on Syria.
If anyone knows the right course to follow with respect to Syria it is Israel.

RR should know better. With Muslims, the only choice we have is, not so much the title of the Jack Nicholson movie (As Good As It Gets), but a play on the Farrelly brothers movie: Bad and Badderer.

That's our only choice: Do we choose to keep uppropped the Islamic tyrant du jour who tortures his own people, hates the West and America (and, of course, hates Christian and Jews), winks at jihadists now and then, but for the most part is more afraid of jihadists toppling him than he is of being a less-than-pure Muslim and thus of courting the favor of the superior West?

Or do we choose to jump out of the frying pan of tin-pot Islamic "nationalist" dictators and into the far worse fire of the more pathologically, fanatically serious Muslims who want to topple all these tyrants in favor of a Revival of Islam after its 300-year nadir of global weakness, with dreams of a restored Caliphate, following the murderous maddness of the Original Original Gangster of them all -- Mohammed, and the totalitarian rule he imposes on the hearts and minds of hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world, with an internal disc drive and software scripted for hatred of the non-Muslim Other and imperialistic expansion to take their land and booty, by hook (violence) or by crook (stealth jihad, immigration) -- or, of course, a combination of both?

If there were a third choice, an actual Muslim ruler who was relatively democratic and pro-Western, of course, we would want to choose to support him. But there aren't any. Not one from among all 50-something Islamic hell-holes of various flavors of Islamic hell. (The best the West ever had, were the two Pahlavis -- but, of course, they were tyrants too: because with a disease demos like a Muslim people, the only way you can even manage to create a bit of breathing space for humanity in sociopolitics is with an iron fist through harsh laws curtailing and curbing, wherever possible, the natural appetite for more Islam among Muslims under one's rule.)

So our only choice, insofar as we choose to favor one over the other, is between Bad and Worse. Assad is the former. The deadly serious fanatics toppling him are the latter.

If by 2012 an "RR" who claims to be Lebanese Christian and implies he's anti-Islam can't see this, it just shows why the West at large is waking up at the pace of an elephant rousing from deep slumbers induced by a thousand elephant gun stun bullets. I mean, if even people in the counter-jihad are spouting nonsense like "RR" this late in the game, no wonder the West at large is an Idiot on Stilts with regard to the problem of Islam.

They are all muslims and they would not keep Jihadists at bay under any regime.

Spencer says:

"Any Western analyst who takes notice of this at all will scoff at it, but actually the General is probably right."

Leaving aside for a moment that Spencer - because his hatred for every Muslim man, woman and child is so pronounced he wants them all to live under the torture kleptocracies of the Middle East forever - is a supporter of the Assad regime, the idea what this butcher is 'probably right' is laughable.

In what way has Assad protected the West from Islamism? Would Islamists being queuing at Syria's ports to go to Europe if Assad fell? It's a ludicrous image and shows Spencer's desperation to paint the Syrian uprising as a terrorist event. The desire to oust Assad is legitimate.

Second, he says to the Lebanese Christian commenter 'I don't believe you'. Why on earth not? On what basis do you not believe this person, Robert? Because, I imagine, their opinion doesn't live up to your cruel imaginings for the Arabs.

I would love Spencer to explain his comment that Syrian Christians are 'generally opposed' to what he calls the 'Islamic supremacist rebels'. Where did you get that idea? What is your familiarity with Christians in Syria? What sort of research have you done? We all know, of course, that you don't do field research in the Islamic world because learning Arabic is too difficult (or too much work - hence why you became a blogger rather than a serious academic). Aren't you at all embarrassed to use a lazy cop-out word like 'generally'?

You might also want to consider that the butcher general is speaking out of desperation. His words translate as 'protect my regime or Al Qaeda will get you!' Well, Gaddafi said something similar when his regime's days were numbered. He did, in fact, attempt to suggest that he was protecting Israel and that if his torture regime fell, Israel's security would be imperiled. Sadly for him - and no doubt for you too - the Libyans voted for the secular National Front (yes indeed! The National Front!) and the Jewish State remains. Gaddafi's other threat that Europe would be flooded with Africans coming via Libya also came to naught. He said all of this in Arabic though. And you are locked out of the field of Middle Eastern politics because acquiring the tools of the trade is too much like hard work.

Another note on the Christians: Do you seriously believe that they want to be what you hope they are? Do you really think they want to live under Assad 'safely' (whatever that means under the Assad regime) while their Muslim neighbours are tortured and raped? People like you and Raymond Ibrahim are dangerous to the region's Christians. You attempt to show them as willing accomplices to crimes against humanity. You attempt to peddle the idea that the Christians must climb into bed with any dictator. Surely they should side with the Muslims, as fellow Syrians (and Egyptians). The Christians are part of our region. And I take offense on their behalf that you should desire that they live in disgrace as whores for Assad or Mubarak.

You pose as a Catholic. But you are a man who hates the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You have no regard for His message. You spit on the Beatitudes.

It's like WWII never ended, the battle just went underground.

And if WWII is still going on maybe Bat Ye'or's "new evidence on Eurabia" helps explain Russia's extreme vigilance towards Europe (Eurabia) and NATO?

You wrote:

"But you are a man who hates the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You have no regard for His message. You spit on the Beatitudes."

You have leveled several false charges against Robert Spencer--most notably the one's listed above. Yet you offer no proof to support them, hmm ...

But before you elaborate on these false charges, you must first explain what the Gospel message of Jesus Christ is. Do you really know what it is?

Yes, this is a test. Are you up for it? ..and you will be graded according to what is written in the Four Gospels of the Bible: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Champ, I'm going to see how ArabNationalist replies to you. And I'd like to see how AN documents instances where our host has actually "spit" (I understand the metaphor) on the Beatitudes.

But, back to the topic of the posting.

I think Daniel Pipes called it correctly when he called for the USA to keep its hands off the Syrian conflict. As for the Assad regime being Europe's last bulwark, I believe that Europe (and, alas, North America) are crumbling from within because of the PeeCee/EmCee disease.

Further, while I hold no candle for the Syrian rebels (they've already shown their true colors to the Syrian Christian minority, and who knows what awaits the Alawis and Druze), the one thing I can say with confidence about them is that their regime will probably prove inept and incompetent, and then turn utterly corrupt. It will quickly enough find the people it proposed to "liberate" disappointed and then angry with it.

ArabNationalist,

The U.S. did in Egypt what you want us to do in Syria: we got rid of a dictator who held Islamic supremacists more or less in check. In part because of the U.S., Egypt's Mubarak is out of power now, and Egypt is turning into something worse: a Muslim Brotherhood-ruled State. Morsi is a Muslim Brotherhood man. Sharia is rising in Egypt. That is what you want for Syria, ArabNationalist?

One of the tragedies of Islam is that it gives only poor choices: between bad dictators or terrible dictators. Islamic culture is fundamentally totalitarian, as Bernard Lewis pointed out. Until Muslims destroy their totalitarianism root and branch, the U.S. will sometimes have to make tragic alliances with some Muslim dictators against other Muslim dictators -- as we allied with Stalin in order to defeat Hitler.

>ArabNationalist

Stopped reading right there.

Remember, don't feed the pedohammedan communicational sicarii.

So the general is probably right says Robert. C'mon mate - get real! Are you seriously suggesting that ANYTHING claimed by a commander of Assad's despicable Republican Guard is credible? Really? Because when you think about it - it's EXACTLY the sort of half-arsed claim that any murderous Alawite Shia general with his neck on the line would say, with just enough 'truth' in it to give it much, much more credibility than it deserves. Don't fall for it!

I'm one of those 'Western analysts' you suggest would scoff at this remark - but not for the reasons you state. In fact I agree that having Islamist governments across the north of Africa and the Middle East will only exponentially increase the threat posed by Islam and the Muslim infiltration of Europe. But Syria being a major part of this is still not a done deal just yet.

For starters what RR claimed about the start of the uprising against the Assad regime is true - jihadis and AQ affiliates we NOT involved. That they HAVE become involved as the uprising drags on has become apparent to any observer.

The truth of the matter is - for now at least - that the main armed opposition is the Free Syrian Army, a hotch-potch of of opposition groups which includes just about everyone but two conspicuous groups: the Shia Alawite minority and the (Sunni) Syrian Muslim Brotherhood. The former of course form the current ruling clique represented by the Assad family but the latter are Sunni fundamentalists who were at the heart of the last (failed) rebellion against the Assad regime in the 1980s.

Probably due to their experience then (where they were virtually wiped out) they have generally been keeping their heads down in the current rebellion while at the same time constantly trying to infiltrate, influence and ultimately control the Syrian opposition, in particular the most powerful bit, the FSA. The FSA is mainly lead at the moment by secular Sunnis (plus a few Christians & Druze) - most if not all of the FSA's military commanders are officers defected from Assad's army.

The rest of the armed opposition is, as suggested, various Islamic militias, a among the most effective of which are associated with - you guessed it - the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood AND the largely Iraqi version of al-Qa'ida.

The longer the uprising continues and the more the FSA gets hammered by the Syrian army the greater the role and control of the armed opposition will fall into the hands of the Brotherhood and AQ.

The Syrian army is itself still majority Sunnis but the most effective bits for Assad are the Alawite-led and dominated Republican Guard and 4th Brigade - including the Special Forces - and not forgetting Syrian Air Force Intelligence, also largely Alawite led and composed. So in fact it is better off for all the Sunni and Christian officers in the Syrian army to defect to the opposition FSA sooner rather than later.

Virtually every analyst - Western and Middle Eastern - agrees that the Assad regime will eventually fall, its just a matter of when. The longer it takes and the bloodier the process, the worse the mess AND thus the easier for the jihadis to take control of what comes afterwards. That is one scenario and is by no means an assured outcome.

Syria's Sunni majority form a very tribal society and the leaders of all the major tribes met recently in Cairo to discuss how they were going to get rid of Assad. Although they argue endlessly among themselves they all agreed on two things: they hate the Shia Alawites with a vengeance and they decided to join with the Syrian opposition FSA based in Turkey. This is quite crucial as they are very opposed to AQ and generally distrustful of the Brotherhood. If the latter were to seize power in a post-Assad Syria, as you suggest, they would first have to win over all the Sunni (and Druze for that matter) tribal chiefs. The Druze hate the Brotherhood only second to AQ and are at best ambivalent to other Sunni fundamentalists (OK - mostly hating!) There will be no Islamic government in Syria without the support of the tribal leaders AND the Druze. At this stage that is not a realistic possibility.

If the Assad regime survives for another six-twelve months (unlikely, but possible) that will change things for the worse. In fact it would only really benefit the Islamists and in THAT case, what the Syrian general suggests may well come to pass. But there is a long, long way to go before then.

Just and OT head-up, people, but look what turns out to have a connection to You-Know-What:

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2012/09/06/4-year-old-girl-found-alive-after-hiding-under-corpses-for-8-hours-in-french/#ixzz25frOKchE?test=latestnews

It takes 8 paragraphs for the payoff, but at least FOX is ahead of CNN, which is still identifying the victims as "Britons".

(My suspicions were aroused upon reading that a traumatized 4-year-old hid under the skirt of one of the victims for 8 hours. How many women wear skirts that long and concealing in late-summer Switzerland?)

Long before anyone else I pointed out on your blogs that Christians in Syria lived in Peace under Assad and the west should support Assad as a bulwark against the much more massive Sunni threat.

But the truth lies somewhere between RR and you. Assad supported Shia extremists such as Hezbollah but not the Al Qaida and other Sunni extremists.

Christians also lived in peace under Sunni Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

The fact of the matter is that an Islamic country demands a ruthless head to control it. There is no other way.

But just like the US stepped in when Saddam Hussein stared getting a drubbing from Iran its in the wests interests not to let the Salafists get control of Syria.

This has more pictures and details. The people shot dead were Muslims, Iraqis "known to the intelligence services" - Oh well.

Suddenly someone named "Doc" appears out of nowhere, with no JW comments track record that I recall, and delivers a long rebuttal of Spencer's elementary thesis? Who said this House needed a doctor?

Hey lemonslime you self-appointed guardian of opinions over here - you ever heard of freedom of speech slime?

I'm not curtailing, nor trying to curtail the free speech of "Doc". Just pointing out areas of concern. Surely, if "Doc" has free speech to spew his bile, I have free speech to object?

And who are you, "Rich", to police what I can, or cannot object to here?

RR and other Lebanese Christians which they rely blindly on Samir jeajea who is a Lebanese Christian politician a pathetic man who never learned for more than 30 years of a political career the origin of the real danger to the region and specially for the Christians of Lebanon “it’s the Quran you stupid”!

So, who do we believe?

Who-ever or what-ever the source du jour is...... has his(its) agenda, invariably being their ascendency.

Here's where the most sensible straddling-strategy appears yet again:

Isolation and containment of this troublesome cauldron calling itself Muslim-Islam or Islamic-Muslim-ism. The labels we attach are in themselves just labels....the reality is that these Muslims are trouble wherever they penetrate and infiltrate to the point where they become a pressure group.

Stop our politically correct hand-wringing....isolate these malignant cells.

Dear Mr Spencer,

If you don't believe me that's your right.

But you are being FOOLED by the lies of the Syrian regime. All successful lies have an element of truth and you are focusing on that small truth and then swallowing the big lie hook line and sinker. YES there are jihadists. But that fact is being used by Assad to deceive the world.

Case in point:

In Lebanon, all of Syria's allies have for months been screaming on the airwaves that Sunni Jihadists are about to target the christians in northern Lebanon. There were anti-christian flyers distributed at churches signed by Sunni jihadists.

Then suddenly, a Lebanese intelligence branch (that is anti-syrian) captured ON VIDEO a pro-syrian terrorist who smuggled bombs from Syria, with orders from Ali Mamluk, to bomb targets in the north. His name is Michel Samaha, a Christian. He used to be on TV all the time screaming and warning that the Sunni Jihadists are about to attack the north. It turned out to be a Syrian trick, which he was part of.

Question for you: What would you have said if that plot succeeded? Wouldn't you be writing "i tried to tell you, i tried to tell you" on this blog?

DON"T BE FOOLED BY THE SYRIAN REGIME. it knows your weakness and uses them agaisnt you.

Random reading of these news accounts of that van of family members murdered have referred to the dead as "Britons" or "British".

I wish that this attaching of an automatic blood-hereditary-nationality to anyone depending upon the officially issued travel documents in their possession, would stop, but I realize it's unavoidable....I only ask that it be clarified where possible.

Why do I feel this way?

Because I used to work for a commercial airline at that famous crossroads Kai Tak airport where we saw a real concentration of varying Identity Papers carried by the very widespread Chinese Diasphora.

They themselves considered themselves eternally Chinese. The passports or certificates of identity were merely travel documents because few governments recognized the passports issued by the Republic of China (Taiwan) and few recognized the passports of the Peoples' Republic of China (Beijing).

So if one wanted to move about at all, there was a genuine need to carry a "foreign" Passport, American preferred, British if they were Hong Kong Residents. The Brits in those days granted very, very few passports to their Colonials. So they applied for citizenship overseas in great numbers, American if they could wait out the long delays due to the large numbers of applicants.

To those readers here who are rolling their eyes at these split-hair complications, this was no doubt a matter of life and death in many, many cases. Apparently it was such for this Iraqi family who emmigrated from Saddam's Iraq to the safety of Britain.

I wish that more detail could be shown as early as possible, but that maybe unrealistic in the rush for "scooping" the media competition.

It's a safe bet that that surviving girls will always inwardly consider themselves to be Iraqis, not "British".

Those Muslims legally resident here in America in our emerging "-istans" and carrying United States Passports are no more "American" than are those computer parts from Taiwan. Those Muslims born here, the so called "anchor babies" are "American" by birth, but it appears that they seldom assimilate.

This then, is the apparent newly fluid meaning of "citizenship" and "nationality".

I very forcefully agree with Robert Spencer here

The writer above:

"DON"T BE FOOLED BY THE SYRIAN REGIME. it knows your weakness and uses them agaisnt you"

Nobody is being fooled by the Assad regime. The Assad regime has been in the forefront of spreading Antisemitism. On that basis it created an alliance with the Iranian Mullahs, even though that conflicted with its relative Secularism. In other words Antisemitism was stronger than its Secularism.

But I think you are wrong and Robert Spencer is correct. I go a step further. I say that Assad must be defended against the Muslim Brotherhood. I also said that Mubarak, Gadhafi, Gaghbo and Saleh plus others also must be defended against the Muslim Brotherhood, because the latter was the Islamist origin for even Al Qaida.

It is a temporary and tactical alliance. It does not entail political agreement with Assad's programme, just that it is necessary to stop the extreme Islamists as a matter of extreme priority. It does not entail dropping the defensive guard of Jews against Assad etc.

It was a similar situation against Hitler in Germany 1933

Especially considering...in the case of Mubarak the Christian Copts were in jeopardy, in Libya the black African Workers were in jeopardy, and in Syria the Christian Churches in extreme jeopardy.

This paste from the title here seems to be a self serving gross-overstatement.

"Syrian General: "Don't they understand that we are the last dam that is holding back the flood of Islamists in Europe? What blindness."

These Muslims rebelling inside Syria can't really be that "last dam" at all, as the flow of Muslims into Europe and America is sloshing around, underneath, and over the top of any "dam" of a Syria.

If readers here will forgive a terrible pun, let's say that that Syrian General has "chutzpah".

[....I'm ducking under the table, avoiding all those shoes...]

Good points, Felixquigley6, but nothing, really, trumps my pet advocacy of "Containment, Isolation, Containment, Isolation" of these Muslim/Islamic countries.

Let these emerging rebels, wherever they may be, slice away at each other. Each of these rebelling groups has their own agenda.... so the Muslim Brotherhood is apparently, for now, pursuing just their own version of two-faced taqiyya by making awkward scenes in Teheran and then smiling benignly at Hillary.

Don't buy a bit of it. These Muslims' long term plan is to kill me because I'm an infidel and they keep saying so repeatedly. I take them at their word, and I think that all of us Westerners should listen and stop accommodating their demands inside our societies.

I have no doubt that the Syrian regime would want to incite Sectarian discord in Lebanon, God knows they've interfered in her affairs many times. Let us remember that Bashir Gemayel himself was assasinated by a pro-Syrian Christian who belonged to his own (Maronite) sect.

And what is antisemitism and anti-christian hate if not the CORE of islam? Don't you know that everything else is negotiable including the veil and the alcohol etc...? So Assad is satisfying the CORE of islam while having a great camouflage while the Jihadists are the same but WITHOUT the camouflage. it is obvious to me which is easier to defend against.

the Jihadists without oil wealth will be their own worst enemy. just wait and see what will happen in Egypt and Syria if they gain power. they are not saudi arabia or iran. they cannot hide the effects of their failed ideologies by pouring money. and for your information, the most virulent anti-USA and Christian-haters in Lebanon were in PANIC when the MB came to power in Egypt.. because they KNOW THAT FACT. and also for your information, during the Lebanese civil war, all the anti-christian killings were done by the so-called "seculars" (PSP, SSNP, Baath, NM, Fatah, etc etc). NEVER by jihadists, who don't stand a chance against the christians in Lebanon or Europe or the USA and they know it. It's all a game of camouflage and deception and Robert Spencer has fallen victim to it.

Robert Spencer is not a war strategist. He is an islam expert. he knows everything there is to know about the quoran and hadiths etc. he knows about taqiyya, but HE HAS NEVER SEEN IT FACE TO FACE IN A WAR SETTING like i have. taqiyya is very effective. it even succeeded in fooling Robert Spencer. the fall of the syrian regime will cause the collapse of the iran regime. the fall of the syrian and iraninan regimes will be the biggest blow to jihadism ever, EVEN if the jihadists will rule syria, which will be basketcase of a country.

but nooooo, some cheap syrian regime propaganda that any lebanese kid would laugh at has succeeded in fooling Mr Spencer who is now ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that those anti-semitic terrorists who murdered the Lebanese christians and blew up the US marines barracks in 1983 killing 243 american soldiers and who have been the number 1 iran allies for 30 years are "protecting Europe from Islam".. and why?... becuase the dhimmi syrian christians "support assad" (and how does he know that? did the Pew organization conduct a poll on syrian christians?) this is just PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I say leave these muslims along and let them kill themselves.

To all the trolls and doubters who have posted here against Robert Spencer's view that "The Christians in Syria are generally opposed to the Islamic supremacist rebels."

Morsi supports the 'rebels' in Syria. And when the Syrian 'rebels' yell Allahu Akbar every time you see them on a video, isn't that enough to tell you whose side they're on, and whose side they're not!

The 'rebels' read the same Al Qur'an as Morsi and his Brotherhood supporters and so think in exactly the same way. They share the same world view.

So, what's Morsi doing to Christians in Egypt? Killing and kidnapping. So, what d'you think is happening in Syria to Christians?

It's not rocket science, guys!

Lemonlime "I'm not curtailing, nor trying to curtail the free speech of "Doc". Just pointing out areas of concern. Surely, if "Doc" has free speech to spew his bile, I have free speech to object?"

What you said was "Suddenly someone named "Doc" appears out of nowhere, with no JW comments track record that I recall, and delivers a long rebuttal of Spencer's elementary thesis? Who said this House needed a doctor?"

You have pointed out NO "areas of concern" regarding his opinion. What greatly concerns you is the fact that someone who calls himself "Doc", which is so very much worse than "LemonLime", and has no "Track record", unlike the "Track record" of Lemonlime, "suddenly" has the temerity to express an opinion.

To refer to his post as "bile" is not addressing his "rebuttal". You are just unhappy that the old boys choir arent just singing their traditional song with Hallelujah as the standard refrain. That anyone other than your small clique of small minded brain-dead old boys dont keep voicing the same old thing like a broken record.

RR you have a point. I have met an Iranian Christian in my country, (a convert from Islam) who has voiced much the same thing as you have. He said that the free Syrian Army though composed mostly of Sunnis were and are are largely secular as the Assad regime, like the Saddam regime in Iraq, produced are large number of secular citizens.

But here is my point. Islamists will quickly take over the and hijack the revolt as they have in Egypt.

In this war it is in the wests interests that Assad eventually wins, not for the ridiculous notion that "Syria is the last dam that is holding back the flood of Islamists in Europe", but to maintain the balance of power in the region and prevent a salafist hegemony.

Islamists enter Europe from may directions and not through Syria as is suggested. The only way to prevent them from entering is to prevent Muslim migration to Europe and have deportation. Thats when we have leaders with the guts to do that.

I wish to take very strong--even rankled--exception to your comments about those of us who have varying amounts of family connection to the Hua-Xia culture (aka Sinophone East Asian); especially "computer parts" from Taiwan. One does not have to belong to the mostly European ethnic lineup of the old WWII films to be politically American, and patriotically so.

The area in the USA where I live is full of people not too long removed from Mainland China, Taiwan (我贤妻是台湾新竹县人;本人不但讲北方话,也讲客家话), and the Nanyang. They are good, decent, industrious, hospitable, and often God-fearing (我信耶稣基督) people. Their sons signed up for our military after 9/11 just like many others. Quite a few who have seen first-hand what Communism is all about are quite grateful for what America has given them. And, BTW, they also get along just fine with the Euro-Americans, African-Americans, recent immigrants from Latin America, Russia, and elsewhere. I knew one professor, originally from northern Shaanxi, who had been raised being warned that Mao Zedong would get him if he didn't behave, reduced to sputtering, uncomprehending horror that blue-eyed, blond-haired, native-born American students made that fat, bloodthirsty old marmot an icon (a little like the Jewish Shoah survivors who see American Nazis march?).

One of my grandfathers, when told to go back to where he had come from, answered that he, unlike his interlocutor, had been given a choice of allegiances by the circumstances of his life, and had made his (American).

Come to think of it, I've known good Americans in the Pennsylvania and Maryland Piedmont who still call Ash Wednesday "Faschung" after seven or eight generations on these shores; and I was told as a youngster not too grow up to be a "bummler" even though our family had absolutely no love for Hitler (or for Walter Ulbricht, to get down to the days of my own youth). I've eaten knishes, matzoh, bagels, lox, kishka, baklava, and fatiman. I eat "wonton" even though my Chinese connections are not Yue (粤语) speakers. Our quintessentially American cowboy is called a "Buckaroo" after the Spanish Vaquero, and the words rodeo, corral, and lariat are unchanged from the Spanish.

As an old consular officer and current ESOL teacher, I'm very much aware that there are bad eggs in any community, immigrant or other, and have no objections to applying our laws concerning deportation, or to police surveillance of those engaged in suspicious activities. Heck, in my former line of work, when in Guangzhou, I used my own checkered background to deny a case in which I thought someone was using malafide fiance and spouse petitions to help an alien-smuggling gang import its enforcers (after all, being Sicilian didn't exactly make Rudy Giuliani a sympathizer with La Cosa Nostra). But I'm also very much aware that most of our immigrants are positive contributors to our society in various large and small capacities. And I am very much aware that a lot of immigrants are American wannabes, and I will sincerely congratulate them on getting their wish once they've had their dates with the naturalization judge.

And, while we're at it, while I am in full sympathy with the anti-Jihad movement, I wince, for reasons which now ought to be clear, when people start using "South Asian" or "Middle Eastern" as euphemisms for "Islamic". It isn't just the Sikhs and Hindus who give us the Bobby Jindals of our country. And, it isn't just the Copts, Maronites, Mizrahis, and Church of the East types who warn of Islamic bloody-mindedness. I note, for example, that of Iranian-Americans, one-third identify as Muslims, one-third as members of minority religions of Iran, and one-third as non-religious--even if 90% were Muslim when they moved here. It would be a tragedy of the first order if the route out of Islam used by many would be choked off because we on our side have decided to see swarthy looks and preference for eating naan and kebap as marks of "the enemy".

Take a deeper breath, Kepha.

What you've posted seems to indicate a seeking of perceived slights where none were intended. I meant no offense. I was speaking from first-hand experience with travel documentation....no intention to be perceived as being abrasive with any ethnic belittling. Your verbose response indicates an over-sensitive, unwarranted vulnerability and a very, very large chip on your shoulder.

Relax, you'll be fine.

"And the darkness comprehends it not". The Bible

If you had read my original comment before "Doc" popped up, you'd see you and I are roughly on the same page on the larger more important issues re: this article.

Let's just say I was talking from first hand experience of dealing with travel documentation, teaching, and life in a heavily immigrant community, too. And, BTW, I have also been, at times, spoken of as "un-American"--although not necessarily here.

John 1:5, to be exact.

The pin to which your Muslim Prez was referring to was the American Flag pin and was worn by all main American political leaders following 9/11...

Now look carefully what America under Obama is doing in Syria, and sadly history teaches us that it could well be the Republican party too.

In Yugoslavia America made a big pretence of being reluctant to intervene against the Serbs. It appeared that it was Germany, Britain and France that wanted oh so badly to intervene on behalf of Islam against Christianity as represented by the Serbs

However within 20 minutes of the ITN picture being flashed across the screens of a skinny Muslim in Bosnia (The “picture that fooled the world”...google that and “Penny Marshall”) Bush Snr. had launched American jets to bomb the Christians on behalf of Islam.

Over recent months one would have been forgiven for thinking that America was not going to intervene militarily against Assad on behalf of the Muslim Brotherhood Fascist Christian haters. Once again it seemed that those nasty Europeans were alone wanting to bomb Assad.

But wait! Quel surprise!

Debkafile today has this amazing couple of paragraphs:

“Despite fairly large-scale defections, the bulk of the Syrian army still maintains its allegiance to the Syrian ruler and doesn’t appear ready to turn against him. The rebels therefore face a long, arduous and hazardous haul before they can secure a substantial safe haven – unless it can be shortened by a step now under consideration in Washington, London, Paris, Ankara and at least two Arab capitals: aerial bombardment of the Syrian army’s toughest backbone, the 9th Division commanded by the Syrian ruler’s brother, Gen. Maher Assad. .

The same treatment could be meted out to smash Hizballah bases and strategic centers.

The thinking in some circles in Washington is that Russia’s disengagement from its support of the Assad regime and cutoff of essential weapons, have opened the way to severing the military bonds tying Assad, Hizballah and Tehran together. As long as those bonds are viable, it will be that much harder to bring Assad to heel and subjugate his armed forces.

http://www.debka.com/article/22344/Chemical-threat-is-back-Hizballah-Israel-close-to-clash-

Repeat and focus: “ unless it can be shortened by a step now under consideration in Washington...”

WOW...those reluctant Americans, trying so valiantly to keep to “keep the peace!”

Note also how Debka spots some of this additional thinking going on in Washington. "Sever the ties between Assad and Iran." In other words destroy Assad but conserve Iran. Ah you really think like the Fascist Leftist Dullards it is destroy Assad to destroy Iran and Hamas? Start growing up!

But we all know, or should know, that the Iranian Fascist regime was cultivated by the US CIA and France from the earliest stage to overthrow the Shah.

And we all know or should know that the American Governments have nourished the Iranian Fascist regime which the American Government (of Carter but followed on by Reagan) created in the first place.

Why though? The answer is very, very simple. America, and I mean not American people but American Governments, are in alliance with The Muslim Brotherhood and with all forms of authentic Islam, that is Islamic Jihad, violence the only real quality of Islam, in order to subjugate the Muslim poor and hungry, becoming hungrier as the crisis deepens.

And American power elite stir up Antisemitism as a weapon to use against the working class and progressives like Spencer who even at this early stage is having to employ guards.

Israel is on its own. The Muslim Obama has engineered a situation that if Israel defends itself against Iran Israel will be seen by the world as a basket case.

America wants dominance and it cannot have dominance in the world without the Jews stripped of their defensive Nuclear weapons. THAT is what the US is after.

Note also that Russia and China opened the way for the Muslim Brotherhood before...in Libya with the UN Resolution of 2011 which opened the door to the bombing of Libya. Now have they done it once more. The collaborationist with Imperialism Joseph Stalin would be proud of these Stalinists.

There is a long history to this issue and I refer to a comment I made on the Caroline Glick website a year and a half ago. Caroline unfortunately did not understand my point then and still does not.

We were discussing Mubarak and Egypt:

{http://www.carolineglick.com/e/2011/03/the-new-middle-east.php}

“They seem unable to see that if you do not defend Milosevic against Fascism then there are results. Similarly if you do not defend the outstanding propagandist Glenn Beck against the charge of antisemitism there are results. If you do not defend Mubarak in time, the same. And now of course we have Gadaffi.
This is a principled tactical position. You maintain your independence in every situation. Against the main enemy the defence is unconditional but it does not imply agreement with the person or thing in question.

I am always drawn to the reworking of the Aesop fable by Leon Trotsky. In this he expressed the essence of the 1933 period which laid the basis for the Holocaust which so damaged your people:

AN AESOP FABLE
From What Next? Vital Question for the German Proletariat, 1932
* * *
A cattle dealer once drove some bulls to the slaughterhouse. And the butcher came night with his sharp knife.
"Let us close ranks and jack up this executioner on our horns," suggested one of the bulls.

"If you please, in what way is the butcher any worse than the dealer who drove us hither with his cudgel?" replied the bulls, who had received their political education in Manuilsky's institute. [The Comintern.]

"But we shall be able to attend to the dealer as well afterwards!"

"Nothing doing," replied the bulls firm in their principles, to the counselor. "You are trying, from the left, to shield our enemies -- you are a social-butcher yourself."

And they refused to close ranks.

"Champ, I'm going to see how ArabNationalist replies to you."

Hi, Kepha,

Well, his silence speaks volumes, doesn't it? ..and yet the Gospel message is so simple, really. Strange that he leveled these false charges against Robert, but he offers no proof or explanation to support them, even when asked. Strange, but not surprising; especially from one so arrogant and conceited as he.

It always strikes me how ready post-Christians (whether Muslims or Western worshipers of Science and the State) who have hardly ever cracked open the Bible in their lives are so quick to accuse Christians who know their Bibles (and Robert seems to know his enough) of going against "Christ".

I agree, damn Israel. If we didn't allow Israel to claim an area for their own that was already inhabited by Muslims for one THOUSAND three hundred and something years, we wouldn't have the twin towers attack, we wouldn't have had the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, we wouldn't have pissed off the whole muslim war into a friggin Jihad. Let's stop sending apache hellicopters to Israel, cut off all support and start on the road for peace for the REST of the world.

If your worried about Jihads, let's look at the source of the problem, Israel. We send arms and full support(more money/weapons than to any other country) to a zionist extremist group that conquered an area in 1948 that was previously Muslim for one thousand three hundred and something years. That's why the twin towers were blown up, that's why we had the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. I for one don't like seeing americans die for Israel's sins. Let's cut all support off from Israel and let them pay the price ALONE holocaust they've made on Palestinians. The Jews left "Israel" nearly 2,000 years ago. That's when it stopped being "Israel". Just letting them have it is like letting saddam Hussein take Quwait because his people used to rule it in biblical times. The most militant, extremist religious fanatics in the middle east with the least legitimate claim to the land are the zionists. Israel=your Jihad.
