Turkey's Foreign Minister at UN: Islamophobia "can no longer be tolerated under the guise of freedom of expression"

We saw at the UN this week a concerted effort by Muslim leaders from around the world to compel the West to criminalize criticism of Islam. The objective of this effort is to stop those who point out the motives and goals of the jihadists, as these are rooted in Islamic texts and teachings. That will render the West mute and hence defenseless before the advancing jihad and the tyranny of Sharia.

"At U.N., Muslim world questions Western freedom of speech," by John Irish for Reuters, September 28 (thanks to Clayton):

(Reuters) - Muslim leaders were in unison at the United Nations this week arguing that the West was hiding behind its defense of freedom of speech and ignoring cultural sensitivities in the aftermath of anti-Islam slurs that have raised fears of a widening East-West cultural divide.

A video made in California depicting the Prophet Mohammad as a fool sparked the storming of U.S. and other Western embassies in many Islamic countries and a deadly suicide bombing in Afghanistan this month. The crisis deepened when a French magazine published caricatures of the Prophet.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said it was time to put an end to the protection of Islamophobia masquerading as the freedom to speak freely.

"Unfortunately, Islamophobia has also become a new form of racism like anti-Semitism. It can no longer be tolerated under the guise of freedom of expression. Freedom does not mean anarchy," he told the 193-nation U.N. General Assembly on Friday.

Egypt's newly elected Islamist president, Mohamed Mursi, voiced similar sentiments in his speech on Wednesday.

"Egypt respects freedom of expression, freedom of expression that is not used to incite hatred against anyone," he said. "We expect from others, as they expect from us, that they respect our cultural specifics and religious references, and not impose concepts or cultures that are unacceptable to us."...

While repeating his condemnations of the video, U.S. President Barack Obama staunchly defended free speech, riling some of those leaders.

"The strongest weapon against hateful speech is not repression, it is more speech - the voices of tolerance that rally against bigotry and blasphemy," Obama said in a 30-minute speech dominated by this theme.

'CLASH OF CIVILIZATIONS'

Speaking after Obama, President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan, where more than a dozen people were killed in protests against the anti-Islam film, demanded insults to religion be criminalized.

"The international community must not become silent observers and should criminalize such acts that destroy the peace of the world and endanger world security by misusing freedom of expression," he said.

Highlighting the anger of some, about 150 protesters demanded "justice" and chanted "there is no god but Allah" outside the U.N. building on Thursday. One placard read: "Blaspheming my Prophet must be made a crime at the U.N."

Foreign ministers from the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation met on Friday. The film topped the agenda.

"This incident demonstrates the serious consequences of abusing the principle of freedom of expression on one side and the freedom of demonstration on the other side," OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu told reporters.

Human Rights First and Muslim Public Affairs Council, two U.S.-based advocacy groups, warned of the risks of regulating such freedoms.

"Countless incidents show that when governments or religious movements seek to punish offences in the name of combating religious bigotry, violence then ensues and real violations of human rights are perpetrated against targeted individuals," they said in a joint statement.

The 47-member U.N. Human Rights Council, dominated by developing states, has passed non-binding resolutions against defamation of religion for over a decade. Similar ones were endorsed in the U.N. General Assembly.

European countries, the United States and several Latin American nations in the council opposed the resolutions, arguing that while individual people have human rights, religions do not, and that existing U.N. pacts - if enforced - were sufficient to curb incitement to hatred and violence.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle attempted to dampen talk of a clash of civilizations on Thursday.

"Some would have us believe that the burning embassy buildings are proof of a clash of civilizations," Westerwelle said in his U.N. address. "We must not allow ourselves to be deluded by such arguments. This is not a clash of civilizations. It is a clash within civilizations. It is also a struggle for the soul of the movement for change in the Arab world."

Yeah? Where is the other side in this clash?

Bigotry and denial of genocide can no longer be tolerated under the guise of piety and concern for the poor and oppressed.

Brave Turks: (1) The soldiers my uncle observed in the Korean War. (2) Some recent scholars who have said that Turkey was indeed guilty of the Armenian genocide.

Rasool Obama has to protect freedom of speech if he wants to get re-elected...After the elections, if he wins, he may punk out in favor of criminalizing speech...
Otherwise, these Mahoundians are a joke if they think they can dictate from Turkey or Egypt, how we are going to live, ...they are delusional...but what's new about that?
I'm keeping my free speech no matter how much jumping up and down they do...All these demands have threats of more mob violence if we don't comply in the background...If they want to do it over there, have at it lunar-ticks...If you want to do it here, we know how to deal with it...

Westerwelle is a moron. Islam has no civilisation, so there can be no clash of or within civilisations. Just a clash between the civilised world and barbarians.

Muslims have to understand two issues: firstly freedom of speech includes saying things that are utterly wrong. For example, if I say "the second law of thermodynamics is wrong" I won't be taken seriously but nobody will punish me, or even reprimand me for that. People will laugh at me, that's all that can happen.

Secondly they have to understand that there's a big gap between their ideas of right and wrong, true and false, and ours. From our point of view the message of the film and the new French motoons is true, albeit you can argue about artistic value. But that lies in the eye of the beholder. From their point of view it's all wrong and blasphemy. They have to learn how to cope with other people's different opinions.

First and foremost they have to abandon the idea, that only Islam holds the truth, that the Koran is the only book of revelation and everything else belongs into the rubbish bin. They have to realise that they're arrogant and intolerant, as they don't respect other people's point of view, even if they deem it wrong. That's what tolerance is about.

But I'm afraid they have to learn it the hard way. Tant pis.

The UN is no place to be at this point in history. Why would we subject ourselves to a vote by countries whose concept of freedom is totally different from our own?

The US can be in a group with shared regional interests, such as NATO, but participating in the UN is a lose-lose proposition. We should deal with them on the basis of negotiations, not in terms of shared legislative interests. We damage ourselves by pretending there is any common interest or shared values that justify subjecting ourselves to a democratic vote with these countries in the UN.

Any business men on this board who may know the approximate price range per month of ads on the newer digital signs on roadways in a small to mid size town?

I think quoting "factual quotes" from the Qur'an would be a start.

Also for those considering Shariah - quotes from "Reliance of the Traveler"

The Qur'an is their "devine" book - straight from Allah..

More should know..

Saying that Islamophobia "can no longer be tolerated under the guise of freedom of expression" as a way to advance the cause of the most brutal and flawed belief system in the world can no longer be tolerated.

Clown!

He is saying that the Muslims in the US are hostile foreign agents of Turkey, or the OIC. Take him at his word. Accept it. Then expel the hostile foreign agents.

A chief irony in all this is that Islam is one of the most hateful and intolerant ideologies ever created by man. Its track record with Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, etc. is deplorable, and we're not just talking here about Islamic denigration of these religions but the debasement and even murder of non-Muslim religious believers in huge numbers and massive amounts of destruction of non-Muslim religious structures. So Muslims going into hysterics about mere insults directed to their beliefs reeks of hypocrisy and the ultimate in double standards, irrespective of perhaps the largest issue of all which is that one can have Islam or freedom but not both.

"...Freedom does not mean anarchy," he [Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu] told the 193-nation U.N. General Assembly on Friday.

"Anarchy" would be a perfectly suitable translation for either fitna or fasad:

Fasad – Most commonly translated “disorder in the land”. It appears in Koran 5:32-33. In verse 33, the punishment prescribed by Allah for it includes the death penalty.

Fitna – More or less a synonym for Fasad. Koran 8:39, for example (to pluck one verse of many from a turban) is a good place to start to grasp what Fitna means:

“And fight and kill them [those who disobey Islam] until there is no more Fitna [disobedience to Islam]“.

After all, "anarchy" strictly speaking means a constant state of disobeying the law; and Islam is all about laws -- sharia laws, that is. So those humans who persist in disobeying sharia, and furthermore go so far as to criticize and mock sharia and the very Font of all sharia, Mohammed, are perpetuating an anarchy that every Muslim has a duty to try to stop.

(For more, see Does Islam Foment Fitna and Fasad?.)

and if the Turks have their way, talking about the Armenian genocide will not be tolerated either. In fact, we as a country, seemed to have backed off from using the term genocide for this great crime against humanity.

From wikipedia...
[He (Obama) has since backed off of those statements, stating only that his opinion has not changed and refusing to use the word genocide. Despite his previous public recognition and support of genocide bills, as well as the election campaign promises to formally recognize the Armenian Genocide,[108] the U.S. President, Barack Obama, although repeating that his views on the issue have not changed, has thus far abstained from using the term "genocide".[109] On April 24, 2009, the President of U.S. Barack Obama stated:

"I have consistently stated my own view of what occurred in 1915, and my view of that history has not changed. My interest remains the achievement of a full, frank and just acknowledgment of the facts."[110]

On April 24 commemoration speeches President Obama has yet referred to the Armenian Genocide only by the Armenian synonym Metz Eghern ("Mec Eġeṙn"). On April 24, 2010 President Obama stated:
“ On this solemn day of remembrance, we pause to recall that ninety-five years ago one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century began. In that dark moment of history, 1.5 million Armenians were massacred or marched to their death in the final days of the Ottoman Empire.

Today is a day to reflect upon and draw lessons from these terrible events. I have consistently stated my own view of what occurred in 1915, and my view of that history has not changed. It is in all of our interest to see the achievement a full, frank and just acknowledgment of the facts. The Meds Yeghern is a devastating chapter in the history of the Armenian people, and we must keep its memory alive in honor of those who were murdered and so that we do not repeat the grave mistakes of the past.[111][112][113][114]]

Excellent point, LemonLime. This line stood out for me also:

"...Freedom does not mean anarchy," he [Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu] told the 193-nation U.N. General Assembly on Friday.

It's stunning that Mr. Davutoglu doesn't see that the riots, violence, murder and destruction of private property seen all over the world in protest of what essentially is a rumor* is the definition of anarchy.

*(because you know those rioting haven't seen the film nor most likely read about it themselves)

With all the opinions on free speech in the media these few weeks it's more apparent than ever that Islam really shuts down the ability to think rationally. An educated journalist doesn't know the difference between free speech and vandalism; heads of state and diplomats tell us that we must respect their ways while disrespecting ours; clerics call for a worldwide ban on blasphemy not realizing that their holy book could be the first to be banned for blaspheming other religions.

It was heartening, however, to read commentary showing the intrinsic understanding of the right to free speech that we citizens of the U.S. really have. Here children get it - picture the classic scenario of the parent warning the two kids fighting in the back seat that they'll be punished if they don't cut it out. The kids know that "He started it" and "He made me do it" won't wash as excuses for their bad behavior even though they may try and get away with it. And of course 'Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never harm me.' is what parents remind us when we want to react with violence when we hear things we don't like. We have the impulse to blame someone else, of course, but the civilized thing to do is to take responsibility for our actions and not be provoked. This little bit of logic escapes the greatest Islamic minds.

"It's stunning that Mr. Davutoglu doesn't see that the riots, violence, murder and destruction of private property seen all over the world in protest of what essentially is a rumor* is the definition of anarchy. "

Actually not so stunning but perfectly logically consistent, once you consider the special opposite meaning of terms in the Islamic Lexicon.

It's not the first time that Davutoglugluglu the Arab-wannabe has shown such arrogance and contempt for Western values. When 57.5% of Swiss voters chose to ban the construction of minarets in their country, Davutoglugluglu demanded that Switzerland's leaders "correct" the decision of the electorate, as though they had done something wrong by standing up to the fascist cult of the black cube.

Guido Westerwelle is an imbecile. Whenever you come across his rants, just remember that the man is a dope. He's one of the Euro-elites who love to see new mosques spring up here and there.

Islam should no longer be tolerated under the guise of religious freedom.

Yes, Obama several times promised Armenian groups that he would support the Armenian genocide resolution, but once elected he didn't and no longer talks to Armenians.

You can probably guess that Armenians are very, very angry with Obama for lying to them multiple times.

Islam can no longer be tolerated under the guise of freedom of religion.

That's really good. Islam into the rubbish bin like Nazism

This is as united as the United Nations has ever been, with a deluge of leaders uniformly condemning Israel, the West and civilised values.

Excellent lexicon, Lemon Lime. Orwellian indeed.
