These cartoons are a celebration of Western freedom. They are a muscular assertion of the fact that in the West, it is an absolute right of the individual to express whatever he wishes, however offensive it is. The presence of such cartoons pushes the boundaries, and thus extends the boundaries, of the right to free speech.

They serve the same function as the "Piss Christ" "art" that appeared several years ago. Except that the "art" was sponsored by a government grant. If someone wants to be offensive, he should do it on his own dime. There is nothing just about making people pay, in taxes, for the denigration of their beliefs.

As an aside, I do find the cartoons gross, and would prefer to not have them on the main blog page. I could then choose to see them or not see them, most not.

Islam's religious leaders must be caught between rage and despair now. Rage for all the obvious reasons, but despair also because there are no lightening bolts from the sky, no army of angelic hosts sent to avenge Muhammad's honor, not even a good flood, earthquake, or plague to teach those nasty infidels a lesson. All Islam has now are impotent old men who rely on their semi-literate thugs to threaten violence on others who dare criticise them.

At this point we should keep hammering home this message and maybe, just maybe, Muslims will begin to realize that raving like lunatics and destroying everything around them is not exactly the best way to respond.

They're pretty crude, but, I don't think there's anything needlessly nasty in saying that every magazine in the free world should publish these cartoons as soon as possible. Every newspaper. Every website. Not to be insulting - simply to get on board the solidarity train en route to the preservation of freedom of expression in the face of violent intimidation aimed at censoring, and muzzling, and silencing.

Let's keep the poor offended darlings rioting 24/7, till they get all tuckered out and can't threaten and kill anymore.

Anyone fluent in both French and English who can translate the other cartoons?

Well...I must say that the French cartoonist has a pair. This looks like redneck humor. Wish I could still read French.

I don't think they're objectionable. They're hilarious. The first one about the 9-year-old prostitute is making fun of the filmmaker's crappy, low-budget movie while still dissing Mohammad.

The 2nd to last one has the caption something like "The Arab world revolts over a film about Muhmmad." The Arab guy watching what one supposes is a clip of the movie, says (close too), "Naw, that's just the evening news."

The one with the Frankenstein-looking character picking his nose has the mother exclaiming, "He doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke, he doesn't do drugs, he doesn't kiss. My son is a Salafi!"

They're in no way comparable to Piss Christ. These have biting, mature humor and show unrelenting ridicule toward Islam. Wonderful.

Translations:

No 3: Caption: the film that embarasses the Muslim world. Muhammad says: "And my bum, do you like my bum?"

No 5: Salafi scam: every pretext will do. The Salafi says: and there is another insulting depiction of our prophet! (pointing at Bugs Bunny)

No 6: Unrest in the Arab world... (The French magazine Closer recently published topless pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge) ... after the publication of photos of Mrs. Muhammad.

No 7.: An idiotic film about Muhammad leads to a break out of Fundamentalist rage. The man says: Show us an intelligent film (as opposed to an idiotic film) and we are going to start the third world war.

No 8: Ado has problems: he doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke, he doesn't take drugs, he doesn't f**k. (shocked mother:) My son is a Salafi!

No 9: Muhammad reduces youth unemployment. (over each of the three Islamists with a lighter, it says "Cinema critic")

No 10: Caption: Innocence of Muslims. (One Islamist to another) With my brandnew iPhone 5, four inch screen, one sees perfectly clear that they have insulted the prophet.

No 11: Caption: Unrest in the Arab world: a risk to Obamas campaign? (the Islamists say) Yes we "crame". (the French word cramer means to burn, torch, something like "yes we set fire")

No 12: Caption: The Arab world revolts because of images from a film about Muhammad (a man has his hand amputated on television. The man sitting in front of his telly says) Actually not, this is just the evening news (i.e. business as usual).

No 13: century XX: Sartre or Aron? XXI: (something like "beavis or butthead", referring to Terry Jones, pictured next to a Bible, and an Islamist next to a Quran).

Most of this stuff is rather stupid and tasteless, but not more so than many other cartoons, and certainly no reason for curtailing free speech.

Some translations would have been nice.

Thanks Robert, for posting these cartoons, at least the reader of this site can judge by themselves whether embassies deserve to be attacked, property destroyed and people killed for these cartoons.
