Jihadist Millennium Bomber gets 37 years of prison dawah

This jihadist was caught plotting mass murder for Allah in December 1999. Since then, the courts have been wrangling over his sentence. U.S. District Court Judge John Coughenour refused the government's request that he get 65 years to life, saying that we shouldn't be guided by fear. So if this jihadist gets out of prison and succeeds in murdering Infidels, Judge Coughenour can congratulate himself that he didn't give in to fear.

"Ressam sentenced to 37 years in prison," by Mike Carter for the Seattle Times, October 24 (thanks to all who sent this in):

Algerian Ahmed Ressam, the would-be "millennium bomber" who was arrested with bomb-making materials in Port Angeles in December 1999, was sentenced Wednesday morning in U.S. District Court in Seattle to 37 years in prison.

The government had sought a sentence of 65 years to life, much longer than the previous two 22-year sentences Ressam had been received. However, in sentencing Ressam on terrorism and bomb-related charges, U.S. District Court Judge John Coughenour said "this case evokes our greatest fears. ... But fear is not, nor has it ever been, a guide for a sentencing judge. It is a foul ingredient ... "

The government sought the longer sentence because, federal prosecutors said, Ressam reneged on an agreement to cooperate with investigators. But Coughenour took the government to task, noting Ressam's refusal to cooperate was likely a "deranged protest" resulting from his poor treatment by authorities, including years in solitary confinement in the government's "supermax" prison in Florence, Colo.

"I will not sentence a man to 50 lashes with a whip and then 50 more for getting blood on the whip," said Coughenour. He called Ressam's deterioration in the past 13 years he's spent behind bars "marked and stunning."

"Judge me as you wish"

Ressam did not speak, but in a written statement submitted earlier he said his agreement to cooperate with the government was made under duress.

"I have no power to stop this injustice but only exonerate myself from it," the statement read. "You can judge me as you wish, I will not object to any of your sentences."

It marked the third time Ressam has come before Coughenour for sentencing. On two previous occasions, Coughenour sentenced Ressam to 22 years in prison, but both sentences were overturned.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Helen Brunner argued that a life sentence was appropriate, given Ressam's refusal to cooperate, his efforts to undo the prosecutions he had been involved in, and the temerity shown in his letter where he suggests that if the U.S. looked "truthfully at yourselves you will see how many innocent people have been killed under the guise of various slogans."

Brunner suggested that this statement proved Ressam would continue to be a threat to the American people if ever let out of prison.

As far as the government was concerned, she said, Ressam was back in the same position he was when the jury convicted him as a terrorist in 2001.

Convicted, cooperated

Ressam was arrested Dec. 14, 1999, in Port Angeles after coming off the ferry from Victoria, B.C. Inspectors found electronic timers, powders and liquids in the trunk of his rental car that turned out to be the makings of a powerful bomb. The investigation that followed showed Ressam had been recruited by a radical Islamic cell in Montreal and had trained in Osama bin Laden-sponsored terrorism camps in Afghanistan. His target was Los Angeles International Airport....

And it has taken 13 years to calculate a 37 year sentence? WTF?

Judge Coughenour (what a name!) sounds like he wears a powdered wig and Louis XIV robe. He's one of those people who fetishizes the law above Reason; let alone common sense.

fear? justice. and 65 to life is weak in their eyes.
why 13 years ?? that's a victory for them too. convicted, sentenced and vilified. wow. speechless.

Will the 13 years be counted towards the 37 years?

37 years instead of 65? What a fearless judge. Maybe he should have been totally fearless and set him free. Or allowed him to sue the US Govt, after all he will need money to build his bombs.

Should this man be given the Victoria Cross or whatever you guys have there? Medal of Honour?

Good God. Of course, the greatest toll Jihad takes is in human lives. But what has this insanity cost us in time, energy, expertise, and money? There weren't many cases of Jihad back in '99, yet it has still taken *thirteen years* to decide this sentence. What utter madness.

I remember how shocked I was by this case at the time, that we would face a terrorist threat from Canada. (Of course, not really from Canada, per se...). I also remember that I was both surprised and grateful that an inspector at Port Angeles even would have picked up on the threat. At the time, the worst thing you were likely to find coming from north of the border was a shipment of meth.

Why do we have so many bloody idiots on the bench? (This is a rhetorical question—clearly, they are infused with the same moronic "political correctness" and willful denial that so much of the rest of the culture is).

As though giving a would-be mass-murdering Jihadist a life sentence would be indicative of "fear". Sounds more like common sense to me...

You could only *possibly* make a case for a lesser sentence if there was some mitigating circumstance—if the prisoner showed great remorse, or rendered some service to the authorities—and even the former could be nothing but Taqiyya.

But instead, Ressam has refused to cooperate. Why does the foolish Coughenour assume this is due to *anything* rather than Ressam being *a Jihadist*?

Moreover, the assertion that this vile Jihadist was being mistreated in prison is utter bullsh*t.

The *only* reason prisoners wind up in these expensive "supermax" prisons is because they have repeatedly attacked staff or fellow prisoners, or repeatedly tried to escape. These prisons are for the "worst of the worst" not only in terms of their crimes, but of their conduct in prison, as well. And we're not just talking about prisoners involved in a few shoving matches in the exercise yard here.

...........................

**Appalling**. This is "justice" in Dar-al-Islam, *not* in the civilized United States. Ressam may have "deteriorated" in prison in some manner, but it doesn't sound as though he is any less bent on violent Jihad.

...........................

Oh, *boo hoo*. Poor Jihadist, subjected to the terrible "injustice" of the filthy Infidels—and just because he wanted to wage violent Jihad! Of course, Ressam would consider *any* Infidel court to be "unjust", simply for considering Jihad a crime.

"Innocent people" here means Muslims—especially violent Jihadists like himself.

...........................

*Hell yes*. Sanity from Ms. Brunner. From the judge, not so much...

Fear means you are losing...We don't need to fear Islam, we just need to deal with it...Fear gets in the way and causes irrational behavior, or no behavior, as in 'paralyzed with fear'...Appeasement and jizya payments to Islam, or parts of it, are the result of fear...It's motto is, 'Please don't hurt me'...While the judge gets philosophical about fear, he pays jizya of sorts, by sympathizing with the terrorist...Still 37 years in the slammer is a long time, especially if they can't put you into the mainstream population...The judge said ...'Ressam's deterioration in the past 13 years he's spent behind bars "marked and stunning."...So Judge John sentences him to 37 years more of it...If you think he is 'stunning' now, check in with him in twenty years...By then he should be 'stunning plus'...

Should this man be given the Victoria Cross or whatever you guys have there? Medal of Honour?

I think you mean the Order of Canada. It's been given to lots of questionable people so it's become kind of a joke.

Anyway, this irredeemable unrepentant criminal and terrorist wanna-be scumbucket (I think most, like me, prefer that he swung) should be locked up till he croaks, in strict solitary, no koran, no imam visits, no prayer rug, no compass to mekka, the cheapest pork and beans three times a day, and a 200 watt bulb burning overhead 24/7. If he complains of boredom, give him a Bible.

I believe you're thinking of the Congressional Medal of Honor, although this award is only for military personnel.

The highest civilian award is the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Receiving this award is not limited to American citizens.

While past recipients have included Mother Teresa, Lech Wałęsa, Ronald Reagan, Stephen Hawking, and Margaret Thatcher, Barack Obama awarded the medal to...uh...Chita Rivera. She's a perfectly lovely person, I'm sure, but she's an actress, singer, and dancer—not exactly a great avatar of human freedom. But she's—y'know—Hispanic. And she started at a time when there were fewer movie parts available. So that's enough...

Still, I'm not sure even Obama will go so far as to present this medal to an actual Jihadist. Still, you never know—he might just declare them a "freedom fighter" and go with it...

And I suppose they could award him the Congressional Medal of Honor, after all. I mean, isn't he in the "Army of Allah"?

j not a and graven image - I meant the judge for being so fearless and giving him just 37 years and not 65.

He should get some medal for his "bravery".

Ressam was the first orthodox Muslim terrorist to affect me directly...in 1989 12 families signed a contract to rent the Seattle space needle for the 1999 milineum eve for themselves and 30 of each of their friends. We paid into a fund for 10 years and on December 1999 the party at the space needle was cancelled after the arrest and response to the would-be terrorist! The lesson i took home was we capitulate to fear... I hated that!
