Muhammad filmmaker, now a U.S. political prisoner, says he did not violate parole

Nakoula, or Youssef, or whatever his name is, apparently deceived many people in order to get his crude movie made. It has even been suggested that he is a jihadist who made the movie in order to provide a provocation that Islamic supremacists could use to push for destruction of the freedom of speech. But no matter who he really is, no matter how terrible of a man he may be, no matter how checkered his past or present or both may be, make no mistake: he is a political prisoner. He has been arrested not for the technicality of the probation violation, but for insulting Muhammad. His arrest is a symbol of America's capitulation to the Sharia.

The protests were not about the film. The protests were attempts to intimidate the U.S. into criminalizing criticism of Islam. Youssef is nothing more than the fall guy who became the first offender against the new federal crime of blasphemy against Islam.

"Anti-Muslim filmmaker says he did not violate parole," from the Associated Press, October 10:

LOS ANGELES — A California man who was behind an anti-Muslim film that sparked violence in the Middle East denied on Wednesday he violated his probation stemming from a 2010 bank fraud conviction.

U.S. District Judge Christina Snyder scheduled an evidentiary hearing for Nov. 9 for Mark Basseley Youssef.

Youssef, 55, has been in a federal detention center since Sept. 28 after he was arrested for eight probation violations and deemed a flight risk by another judge. Prosecutors said Youssef lied to his probation officers about his real name and used aliases.

Youssef fled his home in the Los Angeles suburb of Cerritos and went into hiding when violence erupted in Egypt on Sept. 11 over a 14-minute trailer of "Innocence of Muslims" that was posted on YouTube. The trailer depicts Mohammad as a religious fraud, womanizer and pedophile.

The violence spread, killing dozens, and enraged Muslims have demanded severe punishment for Youssef, with a Pakistani cabinet minister offering $100,000 to anyone who kills him.

Youssef was arrested on Sept. 28. Federal authorities have stressed he was taken into custody for probation violations and not because of the content of the film, which is protected by the First Amendment....

They're lying. He would never have been picked up again had it not been for the film.

I don't believe this. Anyone who watches this trailer can see that the framing device is a segment on the violent oppression of the Copts by Muslims in Egypt. No Jihadist would ever do this.

While this thing is very poorly made, it is otherwise a pretty straight-forward indictment of Islamic violence and its link to the model of the "Prophet".

As for the claims by the actors that they had no idea what the subject of the movie was, this has never seemed credible to me. The entire basis of this claim is that the film's dialogue is dubbed—but movies, especially low-budget movies like this, almost never use ambient sound. It's just that the post-production dubbing is much more obvious when something is this clunky. Dubbing *does not* necessarily indicate that the dialogue was altered.

I believe the actors became terrified when they saw the homicidal Muslim reaction to the trailer, and wanted to distance themselves from the project as much as possible.

This is understandable. Throwing the director under the bus in the process, not so much.

Yes—just as the riots against Rushdie's "Satanic Verses" and against the Danish MoToons and all the rest have always been about shutting down freedom of speech when it comes to Islam—either through "blasphemy" laws, or just by terrifying critics into censoring themselves.

There are one or two references I haven't been able to verify, but virtually all the scenes in the "Innocence of Muslims" are straight from the canonical texts of Islam—the Qur'an, the Hadith, and the Sira. This trailer may have poorly made, but it is actually far more accurate in its depiction of its subject than is the average big budget Hollywood biopic.

More passive sentence construction from the Associated Press. Funny how that violence just "spreads" in Dar-al-Islam, seemingly without human—or Muslim—agency...sarc/off

This is absolutely true. And this is absolutely *shameful*. It might be easy—if not necessarily fair or accurate—to impugn the character of Youssef, but that doesn't mean his case is not a test of our commitment to freedom of speech—and one that our "leaders" are failing miserably.

It would be one thing if the film was inaccurate. But it isn't. Mohammed did those things. Muslims get upset when kafirs tell the truth about Islam. How is this the fault of unbelievers?

Could it be the fault of Islam?

A civilisation is judged on how it treats its weakest members.

Nakoula maybe a crook, but he has a right to be heard, he has a right to criticise any religion or religious figure without fear of retribution in any manner.

All free people must defend that right. The silencing of free speech is the road to tyranny.

The American government should be ashamed of itself. It has lied to its people about the causes of the murder of its own diplomats and even hastened to call them "heroes".

This is freedoms darkest hour.

The questions to be asked are when did he violate his bail conditions? When did the authorities get to know this? What were these violations?

According to the reports:

"Placed under oath, Youssef quietly answered "deny" eight times when [Judge] Snyder asked him to respond to the allegations, which include lying to the probation officer about his role in the making of the controversial 14-minute "Innocence of Muslims" film clip.

Federal prosecutors allege Youssef lied when he told his probation officer that his role in the film was limited to scriptwriter.

http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/national-international/NATL-Anti-Islam-Filmmaker-Heads-to-Court-Wednesday-173460911.html

Then the federal authorities tell us that "he was taken into custody for probation violations and not because of the content of the film, which is protected by the First Amendment."

How then does his role in the making of the film have anything to do with his parole conditions?

Nakoula, or Youssef, or whatever your name is, THANK YOU for this crude but TRUE movie. Viewed by tens of millions, translated into arabic... you deserve an Oscar.

When he was arrested the Judge Suzanne H. Segal said Nakoula posed "some danger to the community" and had lied to probation officials.

"Lied to the probation officers" - about his role in making the film? Big deal.

Nakoula posed "some danger to the community"? Were bomb making ingredients found at his residence? Did he plan to fly planes into the pentagon? Was he planning murder? Gunning down unarmed recruits at an army camp?

The judge should have been arresting those that really did pose a danger to the community. Those that threatened or planned violence.

As to weather he is possibly a muslim provocateur:

Check kiting, which is what Mr.Youssef was arrested for, is a method used in the US to raise funds for Hizbollah.

A man found to be hiding with Hizbollah terrorists in Mexico had been arrested for the exact same crime. He had been engaging in that criminal activity around the time Mr. Youssef was. And he was also from California.*

It's not exactly evidence but I think it would be reason enough for a counter espionage specialist to take an extremely close look at Mr. Youssef's real identity and connections.

Mark Basseley Youssef is the third version of this man's name I've read about. The last time I read his name it was Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. The fact that his name is still changing is pretty interesting.

I am under the impression that Youssef is a muslim name. Cat Stephens took the name Yusuf when he converted.

* This is the story about the bay area "imam" who had been engaging in check kiting and was picked up with a Hizzbolah cell in Mexico.

Will you **please** stop double posting ? It's really annoying.

I have inadvertently posted twice, myself, as have others, but you seem to be making a habit of it.

Is it just me? I cannot fathom why the ACLU isn't all over this. The more they sit it out, the more convinced I become that if the US government abuse of individual rights is tied to a leftist or leftist/Islamic agenda, the ACLU will not challenge the abuse. Perhaps they support it? In any case, I am beginning to believe that if the government's exercise of power is leftist, the ACLU becomes a silent statist support organization -- an instrument of the destruction of individual rights and liberty in favor of the leftist or Islamic regime.

...............................

With just a few exceptions, this is generally the case with the ACLU. They are not defenders of free speech as an ideal, but generally just as leftist political tool.

We can't rely on the ACLU to challenge attempts to erode the First Amendment—certainly not if Islam is involved.

This is a case which I'm going to follow. I'd like to see how long the parole board knew that Nakoula Nakoula was playing around with film-making. And I join with those who think something's fishy when they busted him only after our wonderful Misadministration (hat's off to Diplomad 2.0, an interesting blog if ever there was one) needed a scapegoat on whom to pin the Middle Eastern riots.

Jan do you think I do this deliberately? This is something to do with the Jihadwatch site and not me.

I press the Publish button just once and there is no response. Doesnt happen every time, but most times. Eventually I get a message saying "Data not received please refresh" or some such thing.

I DONT refresh but when I next logon I find it has posted twice.

I have a fast connection but this could be because of the distance.

I have NEVER "inadvertently" posted twice.

You say "I have inadvertently posted twice, myself, as have others.." How can you "inadvertently" post twice?

Maybe Robert Spencer can confirm there is a problem.
