OIC top dog says they won't try again at UN for ban on criticism of Islam

This is fine news indeed, especially since he says he is giving up in the face of immovable opposition from the U.S. and Europe. But with so many recent calls for the imposition of Islamic blasphemy laws in the West under the guise of "hate speech" laws, and with many of them coming from Western journalists, we're not quite out of the woods yet in regard to Islamic supremacist assaults upon the freedom of speech.

"West's free speech stand bars blasphemy ban - OIC," by Tom Heneghan for Reuters, October 15 (thanks to David):

(Reuters) - Western opposition has made it impossible for Muslim states to obtain a ban on blasphemy, including anti-Islamic videos and cartoons that have touched off deadly riots, the Islamic world's top diplomat said.

Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary general of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), said his 57-nation body would not try again for United Nations support to ban insults to religion, but appealed for states to apply hate-speech laws concerning Islam.

"We could not convince them," said the Turkish head of the 57-member organisation which had tried from 1998 until 2011 to get a United Nations-backed ban on blasphemy.

"The European countries don't vote with us, the United States doesn't vote with us."

Western countries see the publication of such images and materials as a matter of free speech....

Ihsanoglu told a conference in Istanbul at the weekend that the OIC had failed to win a ban at the United Nations and would not revive its long diplomatic campaign for one.

Asked about recent media reports that the OIC wanted to resume the campaign for a blasphemy ban, he said: "I never said this and I know this will never happen."...

Ihsanoglu's statement clarified the OIC stand at a time when Muslim religious leaders have stepped up demands for an international blasphemy law and politicians have accused Western states of spreading anti-Muslim hatred under the protection of their free-speech laws.

Starting in 1998, the 57-nation OIC won majorities in U.N. rights bodies and at the U.N. General Assembly every year for non-binding resolutions on "combating defamation of religions" that Western states opposed as potential threats to free speech.

But support for these texts steadily fell to just over 50 percent by 2010, because of strong Western and growing Latin American opposition, and the OIC opted for a weaker resolution against intolerance towards all religions last year.

That more general resolution, drawn up with the United States and the European Union, passed unanimously.

The long dispute highlighted differing views of free speech in Western and Muslim countries. Ihsanoglu said Western states had a "strange understanding" of free speech if it could be abused to hurt and insult others....

Muslim politicians have stepped up their denunciations of Western free speech policies following the video and cartoons lampooning Prophet Mohammad. Muslims consider any criticism of him as highly offensive and beyond free speech protection.

"We cannot accept insults to Islam under the guise of freedom of thought," Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan told the Istanbul conference.

"We Muslims want the same respect shown to Jewish culture, which we support," Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said.

But while editorialists and religious leaders have renewed calls for a worldwide blasphemy ban, few national leaders have actually ended their rhetorical reactions with that demand.

One who did at the United Nations last month was President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan, whose own national blasphemy law has come under increasing criticism at home and abroad as open to widespread abuse against minority Christians.

Ihsanoglu, speaking at the conference on a panel with Pakistani opposition leader Imran Khan, encouraged countries with blasphemy laws to apply against insults to Islam, and then quickly added: "not particularly the one in Pakistan".

The Westerner may choose to believe a Muslim, but such is done at his/her own peril. Hudna is an Islamic concept of truce. "Lets all just say we stop fighting for a spell of, lets say, 10 years." [Why 10 years? To the surprise of no one who knows Islam: Because Mohammed, Islam's "perfect man," set the example in terms of his (Mo's) fighting with the Quraysh tribe. (Ever notice how Mohammed was always fighting with someone?) "If Muslims are weak, a truce may be made for ten years if necessary, for the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) made a truce with the Quraysh for that long, as is related by Abu Dawud" ('Umdat al-Salik, o9.16).]

Muslims aren't going away, either quietly or noisily, on the freedom of speech issue. They're seething about it. It will come up again, and again, etc.

For us, our course is clear: Stay on the ramparts and stay alert. "It is the common fate of the indolent to see their rights become a prey to the active. The condition upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal vigilance; which condition if he break, servitude is at once the consequence of his crime and the punishment of his guilt." John Philpot Curran (1750–1817).

This could or should speak volumes when it comes to our inalienable rights and the determination to defend them.

We should never kowtow to the Islamists, that goes for Google and The New York review of Books among many others when it comes to our cherished freedoms.

Now's the time to take advantage before they try some other way of banning criticism of Islam.
We should make as many Mohammed cartoons and movies as possible. As many facts about the real nature of Islam and the real sordid character of Mohammed must be distributed anywhere and everywhere, by every means possible: books, flyers, leaflets, TV, radio, email, cinema, websites, blogs, forums, semaphore, smoke signals, morse code, carrier pigeon, theatre, animation, puppet shows, song and dance, telepathy, the list goes on and on.
We must spread the truth, harder, faster and more furious than ever.

Ah, the West is still alive. Must be a great disappointment to Obama.

and, if I may continue - do it in every language possible: English, French, Arabic, Farsi, Urdu, Malay and so forth.

Fly planes over Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan, Somalia and drop DVDs and books, showing every great work written including not-so-great works, books by Shakespeare, George Orwell, Mark Twain, Voltaire, books by Robert Spencer, Nonie Darwish, Ali Sina and so on, and of course, especially of course, the Holy Bible.
Movies that show western life and music including old classics - the Wizard of Oz, Singing in the Rain, James Bond films, CDs of jazz, heavy metal, soft pop music.
Really hit them hard with information overload!

Yes, but also, schools in the West MUST teach the true history of islam/jihad/sharia: invasions, enslavement, dhimmitude, religious 'cleansing', and so on. Until then, too many muhammad followers will keep on demonizing western civilisation, while too many of us will keep on agreeing with them.

In the West we do not have a "strange understanding" of free speech, we have a "non-sharia" understanding of free speech.

Furthermore, in the west we not have strange understanding of the separation of church and state. What we have is an understanding that the laws and imposition of same should be managed by the "state" part, and not sharia-made-and-imposed by the "church" part.

islam is the opposite of everything we stand for.

Freedom of speech is everything and it is the foundation of the USA. No freedom of speech, no freedom of any sort. This is not subject to negociation. It is a right given to us not to give away but to give it to our children and grandchildren.

That is why I left Turkey where now Erdogan is doing his best to convert the country to an Islamic state. What a waste and shame of taking back a country which had some chance to get truely westernized! I don't know it for sure but I bet that Erdogan knows much, much , much less about Islam than any member of this blog. This is also true for most of the muslims in Turkey as they cant read the Koran but pray in Arabic without knowing what they are saying.

We have to fight against Islam on all fronts to protect our freedom.

"schools in the West MUST teach the true history of islam/jihad/sharia: invasions, enslavement, dhimmitude, religious 'cleansing', and so on."

Wishful thinking.

The teachers themselves are already too befuddled with revisionist history and for the most part too intimidated to teach the real history.

Some have been attacked and physically assaulted. Unless the directive comes from above there will be nothing but cowardice and dhimmitude on the other end.

The OIC just gave up because it realized it could only hope to get a ban on criticizing religion in general, rather than just Islam. That kind of ban would mean much of Islam itself would have to be banned.

Guess the future belongs to those who have the freedom to slander or tell the truth about any religion they choose, including Islam.

Obama: ‘The Future Must Not Belong To Those Who Slander the Prophet of Islam’--only a Constitutional expert of the stupidest kind would say that.

Did everyone see *this*?

"...support for these texts [that is the demands for a blasphemy law, put forward by the Islamintern at the UN - dda] steadily fell to just over 50 percent by 2010, because of strong Western **and growing Latin American** (my emphasis - dda) opposition"..

**Latin American** opposition to something promoted by the Islamintern.

If this is so, it is most encouraging, and I hope the trend continues.

Where are the Portuguese translations of Mr Spencer's books? The Spanish translations?

The Portuguese and Spanish translations of Mark Durie's two books - 'Revelation?' and "The Third Choice'?

Has anyone had a go at dubbing or subtitling 'Innocence of Muslims' - in all its classic awfulness - into Spanish, accompanied by notes, also in Spanish, identifying the Islamic scriptural basis of all the major incidents?

If Spain and Portugal's New World daughters join the Resistance to the Third Jihad, especially if enough of them vote *against* the Islamintern at the UN, then it would certainly help turn things around.

A word of advice to any Latin American non-Muslim who may be reading over my shoulder: start working on your governments *now*, to STOP Muslim immigration into your countries. Right now, you have very small Muslim colonies. DON'T let them get any bigger, because if they get any bigger, then they *will* Go Jihad on you.

*Don't* do what Venezuela has done, and get suckered into a 'relationship' with an Islamic state...because you *will* get screwed as a result, sooner or later.

Probe with the bayonet. If you meet steel, stop. If you meet mush, then push.

-- Vladimir Ilyich Lenin

"freedom of speech" should be taught in conjunction with "THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS".

when freedom of speech has gotten twisted and besmirched into "freedom of expression" which includes pervert parades in public and all sorts of media obsenity etc....well, that just ain't right.

i don't like the USA being represented abroad by hollyweird disgusting, violent movies and lady gaga etc. no wonder why "modest" people think the USA is a pit. just recently there was a man from another country who told about someone new to the USA who was so surprised to see a mother being kind to her child and they were having a good, playful time. well, the only impression of america before that was the movies. bang bang.

lot of hollyweird is an "insult" to america.

Yup - hudna their deceitful definition of peace to the muzz is retreating to live to fight another day when they know they've gotten as far as they could for the time being.

What a crying shame for the Filipinos they are a lovely hardworking peace loving people, their despicable government has sold them out in a deal with the devil - this is far from over, the muzz will use this opportunity to regroup militarily and the end result for the Phillipines will be far more ugly than they ever imagined - you can't make peace with those WHO WANT TO KILL YOU and establish their nasty sharia over all your land! Your ignorant and cowardly government has made a fatal mistake...

this "separation of church and state" stuff is just nonsense that got whipped up in the last few decades. take a few days off and go visit washington DC and read all the quotes from the BIBLE! check out the congress, and the capitol and see the statue of MOSES the lawgiver, read the inscriptions IN STONE. have a fine trip.

don't be like obama who compulsivly had to have the CHRISTIAN symbols covered, what gall, before he would speak. who remembers anything he said. we just remember the unmitigated GALL.

people from all over the world are clamoring and climbing over the walls to get into the CHRISTIAN USA! because of its JEWISH-CHRISTIAN BIBLICAL foundations.

the sad part is, that refugees that are racing away from their scary countries, and people who want to get a USA education, bring their discusting religions with them.

hopefully, the USA will draw the line before someone comes here and puts up a repulsive temple for the RATS. (take your shoes off before entering the temple...the RATS can crawl on you. that is an honor.eeeeeeeeeek.)

Sorry. I was pretty sure thatchurch and state "nonsense" (as you call it) was "whipped-up" in the Constitution.

Well, glad to see that they're backing off on this issue. However, I believe the far greater threat to free speech comes from the Western Left at this point in history.

You really should actually QUOTE someone, if you are going to disagree with them.

"I was pretty sure thatchurch and state "nonsense" (as you call it) was "whipped-up" in the Constitution."

This is NOT what SUFT posted. He or she referred to the 'separation of church and state'. which nowhere appears in the US constitution. The abuse of the constitution regarding church status is a serious problem in the US, and the sad fact that so many people believe that such is mandated in the constitution, is a very serious threat to your freedom.

Don't tell me they're upset with the U.N. too..The OIC should just leave then..They don't belong there (or ever should have) and nor does anybody else for that matter..

Somewhat off topic (though nothing is really off topic when talking about Islam, since all the different problems of its disease are tightly woven like the thousand threads of a Persian carpet): I'm not one of those who casually bandies about the idea that Obama is, or might be, a Muslim.

However, a story was reported today based on some persuasive examination of photographs over 30 years to the present, indicating that Obama's wedding ring (which he had Michelle "re-give" to him for their wedding, since he's documented to be wearing it years before he married her) has half of the Shahada in Arabic -- la ilaha illallah ("There is no God but Allah").

This by itself is disquieting enough; but it's likely that elsewhere on the ring (or on its underside) not yet captured by photographers (since no one has ever bothered to ask him to submit his ring to examination -- fat chance, if we can't see his birth certificate or Harvard or other college transcripts!), the second half of the Shahada may be found -- the part about how "and Mohammed is His Prophet" (anna Muhammad-ar-Rasool Allah).

http://www.wnd.com/2012/10/obamas-ring-there-is-no-god-but-allah/

... and let me tell you, Robert, this OIC decision to back off, at least for now, did not go through the whole muslim community smoothly ... just look at this infighting, provided by Reuters:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ2tqah0PFc&feature=related

I had a look at that article you linked, about Burma saying no to an OIC office on its soil.

The Buddhist monks seem to have been doing some homework: they held a huge protest about the very idea of an OIC outpost.

The accompanying picture was very interesting: a monk holding up a large sign, in English, with these words "The World Is Not Only For Muslims".

True dat.

In other words: he's drawing attention to Islam's geopolitical megalomania, its demand that the entire planet should be Islamised, and dominated and domineered over by Muslims; perhaps whoever wrote that sign was even aware of the Islamic idea that the world belongs to allah ...that is, to the Muslim Ummah. which therefore feels wholly entitled to seize the property and persons of non-Muslims, whenever and wherever it is strong enough to do so.

And, seeing that megalomaniacal greed and sense of total entitlement, he is saying NO to it.

Good on him.

I think that little sign from the protest in Burma could go a long, long way.

"The world is not only for Muslims".

Since everyone else has spoken righteously about this subject, allow me to thank you for the choice of the tune/video. Old favorite to many.

Yes, very publicly saying "we're never coming back to this issue" - as if. Don't believe it for one second.

jews can laugh at themselves. thats why i respect and admire them. clever, contributing people with a culture and attitude that has enriched us all.

moslems generally weaken each other's stands as they grapple for the top amongst themselves. they couldn't organise a pissup in a brewery, theyre too 'proud' and sour to co operate. even with each other.

imagine the same claim from Christians. half of our authors, comedians, politicians and people in the street would be executed.

but its what they'd love to see, all of us afraid.

Turkey, stop mouthing off about imagined or even direct insults and BOMB SYRIA already. if we can count on moslems for one thing, they will never show a united front. we CAN count on them killing each other .. forever. allah be praised and hand out the candy!

So they are going to fold their tent and slip away in the night? A likely story...They will simply regroup and come at the idea in a slightly different manner...Allah does not give up that easily...

One more good reason to home school!
The ease of transmitting a family's worldview to the next generation is the main reason to homeschool, in my opinion. The other benefits are the icing on the cake. And from my experience it seems (at least in my area) the schools respond to the declining enrollment resulting from home/private schooling by smartening up and making an effort to fall in line with the wishes of the parents.
Also Romney is proposing education vouchers so parents can choose the schools that cater to their educational goals for their offspring.

From the First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

How's that Western Canadian?

Well said Softly. I was just thinking too that the critiquing of the Quran should take a variety of intonation. So, let the mockers mock and excoriate and let the meek give gentle humble pleading critique. Let the comedians point out the hilarious and let the human rights types hold up the tragedies for public viewing so by all means those who currently do not understand the threat may be convinced.

Making no law respecting the establishing of religion is not the same as'separation of church and state' which today has come to be understood to mean suppression of church and aggrandizing of state. It has come to mean that the state must be purged of all taint of the biblical culture which created the beautiful republic which you now enjoy. Funny to me that you need to be coaches on this from Western Canadian and me, another Canadian!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Lb8SLNMIBlM

Please do see it. A, however slight, sign that things just may have to change?
In FRANCE!
As it has always been clear to some of us: we are dhimmis of the Left and most of us can't even conceive of the fact.
Without revolting against the dhimmitude imposed on us by the left we can't stop sliding toward the dhimmitude of Islam.

Did you even read my first comment? I stated that in the "west" we have an understanding that laws and their imposition should be managed by the state. Perhaps you disagree with that as a principle, or perhaps you disagree with its execution. Which is it?

And my reference was to the "west", not just the United States. It was SUFT that took that diversion.

Furthermore, I also am a Canadian. But I hardly need any coaching from you.

I agree with J not A and Duh Swami.

While I am thrilled to see the Islamic supremacist OIC back down in the face of opposition from the US and Europe and the rest of the West—including Latin America—I don't believe Ihsanoglu for one moment when he says, re continuing to seek blasphemy laws, that "I know this will never happen."

The West has generally been weak—or worse, actually accommodating—on cries for censorship, especially in the wake of the "Innocence of Muslims" film and resulting homicidal Muslim mayhem.

I'm thrilled to see that for once they are going nowhere at the UN—and we *should* celebrate—but we would be fools to suppose that this battle is won once and for all. They *will* try again—and likely soon.

"islam is the opposite of everything we stand for."

I agree completely. After reading the koran, hadith...etc. I can only conclude that islame is the anti-religion, and alla-de-da is satan.
And this from an atheist.

Softly bob:
"We should make as many Mohammed cartoons and movies as possible"

Anyone know where one can upload insulting cartoons for all the world to see? Even though I'm not an artist, I drew up a moham, that is a mohammad ham. It's kind of funny. I would draw more but not before I know where to show them.

I think OIC backed out is because, they understood very well, it will not be a prudent idea to be provoked by the right wing Zionist freeloading gang and their relentless campaign to spread ISLAMOPHOBIA and HATE will continue in the west under the pretext of free speech, particularly in the United States. Because, it is the resources of the United States that these right wing Zionist and their 100% subsidiaries wants to use along with their hidden pac's foot soldiers to blackmail any or all progressive intellectuals, politicians in the United States.

I am glad OIC made the right decision by not getting provoked now and later discovering they are under the trap of the Right wing Zionist dirty plot toward a grand scale violence in the middle-east. All these right wing Zionist are waiting is a new George W. Bush type Jesus freak in the white house to carry out their ultimate agenda of grand scale violence. Which will be much larger than the Iraq fiasco, under the name of false WMD.Which was in itself a right wing Zionist plan carried out under the flag of the United States.

These right wing Zionist groups are there to squelch any rational debate about freedom for Palestinian as unhealthy. Silencing skeptics by organizing blacklists and boycotts, blackmail—or by suggesting that critics are anti-Semites—violates the principle of open debate upon which democracy depends. For example total inability of the U.S. Congress to conduct a genuine debate on these vital issues paralyzes the entire process of democratic deliberation in the United States and Europe.

It is amazing to note that the right wing Zionist and their backers should always be free to make their case and to challenge those who disagree with them. But efforts to stifle debate by intimidation must be roundly condemned by those who believe in free speech and open discussion of important public issues.

Note "danny's" implication that "progressive intellectuals" would be in favor of Shari'ah censorship of "blasphemy". Of course, if he is here talking about the hard left, he may be correct. That doesn't make support for such tyranny any less shameful.

More of "danny's" usual crap. The violence in the Middle East right now is all on the part of pious Muslims, and all in the name of Islam.

Blatant projection—as though homicidal Muslims rioting in the streets and murdering our diplomatic staff are avatars of civilized debate.

The intimidation is all on the part of Muslims, and all on the basis of preventing any criticism—or even questioning—of Islam.

You're a lost cause defending an evil cause: islam.

Snap out of it!!

I am sure the first amendment was a responce to the tyranny of the state church of England. It prohibits the government from establishing anything like what they had just escaped. But this had to do with denominations within Christianity. These same founding fathers printed a congressional bible to be used as a text book in their public schools. They also held worship services at the Capitol building, and commissioned biblical murals there. If they had wanted to forbid government support of the Christian religion in general they wouldn't have done these things.

Let me quote one of the founding fathers.

"In my view, the Christian religion is the most important and one of the first things in which all children, under a free government ought to be instructed...No truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian religion must be the basis of any government intended to secure the rights and privileges of a free people."
- Noah Webster

A lot of us down here feel the same way you do, neighbor, and we're called evil Evangelical Rightists because of it.

Dude?

You are one, twisted individual. Do you proofread what you post before you post it?

Please tell me, "No", and I'll feel a lot better.

Oh yeah - I'll try again...

Are you a Muslim, or are you not?

If you're a Muslim, you should have no problem admitting it, right?
