Reza Aslan refuses to speak out for Islamic "moderation," says bin Laden's version of Islam is valid

In this revealing video clip, interview Cameron Kash presses noted "moderate" Muslim Reza Aslan on why there is no visible and organized movement of moderate Muslims working against the jihadist understanding of Islam. Aslan, arrogant as ever, first trots out the tired line that those who think that peaceful Muslims aren't speaking out against jihadists and Islamic supremacists just aren't paying attention, dismissing those who think otherwise as "stupid." Kash, however, to his credit, won't be placated by nonsense, and presses him further.

Late in the clip Aslan clearly starts folding under a line of questioning that was far harder than the usual fawning he gets from interviewers, even though Kash is unflaggingly respectful and supportive. He says that because there is no central authority in Islam, no one can say that Osama bin Laden's version of the religion is invalid, or that he is not a Muslim. This is actually true as far as it goes: there is no central authority in Islam. But in reality, the practice of takfir, or declaring that some individual or group has so deviated from the faith that it can no longer be called Muslim, is a time-honored principle of Islamic theology; that Aslan will not employ it against those Muslims who believe the way bin Laden did is revealing.

Also, Aslan makes no mention of the fact that jihadists make recruits among peaceful Muslims and justify their actions by reference to Islamic texts and teachings, and consistently portray themselves as the exponents of authentic Islam. It is perfectly reasonable for Cameron Kash to ask Aslan and his fellow "moderates" to fight that claim. Instead, Aslan makes fey gestures, bloviates and obfuscates.

Another interesting feature of this interview is the point where Aslan names some of those he contends are leading moderate Muslim spokesmen: Eboo Patel, Amina Wadud, Faisal Abdul Rauf and Daisy Khan.

Eboo Patel dissembles about Muhammad's behavior and Islamic teaching; Amina Wadud, the only possibly genuine reformer in this group, aroused Muslim anger by having the temerity to lead prayers as a woman; Rauf has refused to denounce Hamas; lied about his commitment to religious dialogue; lied about whether the Islamic center planned for the Ground Zero site will contain a mosque or not; lied about whether or not the project is getting foreign funding; and was involved with a group that helped fund the jihad flotilla against Israel. Daisy Khan has likewise engaged in lies about and defamation of freedom fighters.

That Aslan would try to pass off such an unsavory gang as "moderates" is not suprising, since he himself has recently been unmasked as a Board member of a front group for Iran's bloody Islamic regime. Aslan is also a Left-fascist who has called for obstruction of our freedom of speech by means of vandalism of our pro-freedom ads. He has tried to pass off Iran's genocidally-minded President Ahmadinejad as a liberal reformer. He has called on the U.S. Government to negotiate with Ahmadinejad himself, as well as with Hamas -- that is, with two of the most barbaric and murderous adherents of Sharia. Aslan has even praised the jihad terror group Hizballah as "the most dynamic political and social organization in Lebanon," as well as the Jew-hating, women-hating, kuffar-hating Muslim Brotherhood, which is dedicated in its own words to "eliminating and destroying Western civilization from within." Aslan wrote: "The Muslim Brotherhood will have a significant role to play in post-Mubarak Egypt. And that is good thing." We see now just how "good" things are becoming for non-Muslims and women in Egypt under Brotherhood rule.

But what do you expect from an "expert" who claims, in the video below, that Turkey is the second most populous Muslim country, and that Pakistan is third? He is only about 100 million people off. Though lionized by a corrupt and compromised mainstream media, Reza Aslan is -- to use one of his own most favorite words -- quite simply and obviously stupid.

I don't think there is any doubt that Reza is educated beyond his intelligence...

Spencer writes:

"Late in the clip Aslan clearly starts folding under a line of questioning that was far harder than the usual fawning he gets from interviewers, even though Kash is unflaggingly respectful and supportive."

Or, it could be that Kash's style (whether intended or not) sufficiently massaged Aslan to get his guard down, where a more confrontational approach would not have elicited the glimmers of the Mohammedan beneath Aslan's mask, as ill-fitting as any cheap plastic Halloween mask.

The problem is that when people say they want to see "moderate Muslims", what they really mean is "liberal Muslims", which means applying liberal theology to Islam. And I'm afraid that I don't consider liberal theology to be tenable for any religion.

Reza in second vid laughably trying to convince people that, in his words, “Islam is by far the most eclectic, most diverse religion in the world,” as exemplified by Islam’s supposed leaderlessness, as opposed to Catholics, who, according to him, are uniform under the Pope :

“Now imagine 1.6 billion people but without a Pope, without a Vatican. Without any single authority who gets to define who is a Muslim, who is not a Muslim, what is proper Muslim behavior, what is not proper Muslim behavior…what you have is a cacophony of voices…”

Pfft. Um, Reza, Muzzies do have such an authority – pedophilic warlord Muhammad.

I suspect that Douglas Hale of the Mercersburg Academy will not be available for comment.

There's certainly no shortage of false teachers within islam is there? ...beginning with false prophet muhammad, and now guys like Reza offering us his idiotic insights.

Reza hasn't read the quran, and it shows ...

(1) This man is rich resource for a class in propaganda and fallacy identification, Level Two. Shifting focus, mention only mildnesses which are irrelevant anyhow, and much more. It would be entertaining to watch if not disgusting and dangerous. Do not think he is dumb or non-educated...

(2) I heard him speak at a Wisconsin university. Asked about sharia, he repled, "Oh, that is only either some 7th century things nobody follows any more, or else courts set up to settle family disputes by religion." This enormity tells all--BUT EVERYONE BOUGHT HIS EVERY WORD...

This clown likes the sound of his voice a way too much. He is lying every inch of the way - he states the Muslims are the most successful, most educated, most integrated, most bla bla.. in the States. The fact shows the opposite - they are the least successful, least educated, least integrated but most bla bla .. throughout the Western world.

He stated the second largest religion is Catholicism - implying after Islam - he obviously imagined to split Christianity but ignored the fact that 1.2 Billion muslims (not 1.6 bill as he is harping about) are split between Sunnies and Shiats and what have you.

The guy is a classic masturbatory - he loves the sound of his voice, he thinks he is a king shit.

"I'm afraid that I don't consider liberal theology to be tenable for any religion."

The problem with Islam is not in its "theology" but in its ability to allow for any recognition of a separation of religion and state, where the fusion of those two regimes is sought obsessively through a gnostic militarism electrically powered by a rabidly immanentizing eschatology.

AAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!

Major typo in my previous post:

"The problem with Islam is not in its "theology" but in its ability to..."

should read:

"The problem with Islam is not in its "theology" but in its inability to..."

This nose-picker Reza has boogers for brains ...

Did he say with the exception of a few hundred Muslims in the world that are killing people??? Somehow I think it's more than a few hundred...

I agree. He doesn't seem to have a logical mind probably because he is so busy avoiding the big questions such as, why do so many Muslim majority countries have so much repression and so much violence? Why are they so backwards? Why do countries in Europe with large Muslim populations have major problems with Muslims not integrating? Why does Islam produce violent extremists in far greater numbers than what is happening in other religions and their fundamentalists in the present? We are all living in the same century, yet Islam seems like Christianity hundreds of years ago. Why is that Christianity and Judaism are making an effort to embrace modernity, or at least cope with it, while Islam makes a point of rejecting it? Is it the Koran or something else?

You wrote: 'And I'm afraid that I don't consider liberal theology to be tenable for any religion.'

So, that makes them all the same, does it?

Then, can you tell me where in the world there are religions stoning women to death, amputating hands for theft, murdering people for insulting their prophet -- other than Islam, that is!

Clown!

What we need to focus on is that there are interpreters of Islam and they come out of Egypt from the Center of Islamic study there. They are the foremost interpreters and Islamic Law and it is from there that Imams form their instruction. Robert many of times have spoken of this institute and unfortunately their interpretations call for the annihilation of the unbelievers without question. We need to heed the dangers of this ideology and stop the influx of these people migrating here. They already have problems in Michigan, Maine, and Tennessee.
We already have seventy or so court cases involving Sharia incidences and they are growing. Our government has been behind bringing these people here because of the OIC (Organization of Islamic Co-operation) and written codes that call for the west to take them in. It is suicide and it needs to stop. If you think it is bad here check out the Netherlands, Dutch-lands, England, Germany. These governments have a big big problem and they are just beginning to get push back from the indigent populaces but political correctness has these governments at each others throats and don't know what to do.

I don't give this interviewer any kudos at all. It almost looks like he came totally unprepared. He sure as hell didn't ask any of the questions I would have asked. And I don't see where Azlan "caved" anywhere. As a matter of fact it seemed like that "interviewer" was struck dumb by Azlan's "brilliance" or whatever in the hell it was that assinine reply at the end. Personally I would have asked him how he thought Americans should react to tripping over a foot bathe in a public urinal. Has he read Raymond Ibrahim and where exactly is he off the mark, or any other critic for that matter. When is he going to debate Ibrahim or Spencer. I'd ask him how EXACTLY and WHERE do you and terrorists differ in Islamic scripture. What about the part about Apostacy in Reliance of the Traveller. Or Sheikh bin Humaids article on Jihad found in millions of Summarized Korans and Bukharis....and on and on. Man, as far as I'm concerned this guy choked..big time. He just let Azlan spew his worthless shit. It was pathetic.

AND I'd ask him why Muslims are scared shitless of Christian missionaries.

Wow, I haven't seen that level of arrogance from someone in a while.

He said the majority of Americans are stupid for allegedly believing the Earth is 6000 years old. And what do Muslims believe? Is Reza Aslan a closet apostate?

Kash says he's never met a Muslim radical. Has he seen the statistics on Muslim support for sharia, Bin Laden, Hamas, etc? I've never met a neo-nazi, but that doesn't mean they don't have a negative impact on society, and I'm quite sure there are vastly more radical Muslims than neo-nazis in this world. Plus, the radical Muslims have most Islamic theology on their side.

There is no such thing as a 'moderate' Mahoundian because Allah won't allow it...
Didn't Reza read his book?

Haarrgh Haarrgh Haarrgh, LL !!! You trod go dogs**t.
Oh well, it's suppository lucky. :-)

I find it very hard to listen to this Aslan. His rethoric is dishonest and aggressive. You can't even ask him a simple question without being on the receiving end of innumerable ad hominem attacks.

"When it comes to religion .... there is no right and wrong interpretation!"

Wow, so there is no right and wrong, when it comes to religion?

If you reject right and wrong, true or false, then you reject logical reasoning. But, he thinks that he is an "intellectual"? He thinks that he can argue or reason? He can't! He doesn't even understand what reasoning is!

The image he has of himself is so far removed from reality, ... This man is an imbecile who cannot think clearly.

Why do these triple-talking Muslims... of whatever sect or variation..... keep thinking that we'll continue to buy their convoluted theological bulls**t in the face of so much evidence to the contrary?

We should not waste time in such dialogue with these creatures. Words out of the mouths of Muslims are continually demonstrated to have no meaning or value.....mere vapor....but we seem to persist in seeking "dialogues" and "negotiations".

Who can answer this?

He is hardcore I.S. (islamic sympathizer).Radical muslims I get. They want to take over the world, by RAPE,MAIM,and MURDER.They say so and they do it! Liberal muslims, moderate muslims, muslims, and others I don't get. Where are THE VOICES against the ACTS of SAVAGERY of the religion of peace?

"And I don't see where Azlan "caved" anywhere."

"Why do these triple-talking Muslims... of whatever sect or variation..... keep thinking that we'll continue to buy their convoluted theological bulls**t in the face of so much evidence to the contrary?"

-- two commenters above.

We shouldn't be expecting anything honest from Muslims -- except for those who seem to be assigned the role of "Bad Cop" and so can be relegated to the TMOE (Tiny Minority of Extremists), thereby automatically and logically salvaging the vast majority of Muslims from blame.

The point for us is not to elicit honest answers through direct questions from a Muslim (particularly a Muslim in taqiyya mode, which constitutes the real vast majority); the point is to elicit involuntary candor from them through various tactics that will cause their mask to slip. As Spencer noted, this interviewer got Aslan to do it on the one point about bin Laden (whether this interviewer did this intentionally or not, is not clear). We should always gear our interactions with Muslims with only that goal in mind -- to expose their real Mohammedan feelings for public display.

There is, for us -- before the day we can openly declare war on them through Operation EIFE -- no other useful communication with a Muslim.

Wow! 1.6 billion Muslims and only 200 extremists!

Who knew!

dont take this guy lightly. he is very smart and dangerous at the same time
m

he listed imam rauf feisal among muslim advocates aver preaching against extremism.

imam rauf feisal refused to denounce shariah (islamic inhuman draconian laws which are complete violation of human rights)on michael coren show.

"There is no such thing as a 'moderate' Mahoundian because Allah won't allow it...
Didn't Reza read his book?"

Exactly, Duh_Swami! ...obviously he hasn't read the unholy quran.

with that thesis of his there is no correct or incorrect interpretation of islamic scriptures
bin laden is right about his interpretation and he is right about his... reinforcing legitimation to monitor muslims in whole including him.

that's playing a russian roulette with only one chamber empty.

in conclusion: "moderate muslims" a myth.

What I found amusing about the first 'interview', was while aslan was burbling about 'moderate' muslims, 'peaceful muslims' etc, etc, smack bang in the middle of the screen was the picture on his wall of a woman in a burka, clutching a gun.

Don't be silly. I'm talking about general methods of interpreting a given religion's doctrinal core-- the accepted scriptures, traditions, whatever. The conservative theological mindset takes what is presented as ultimate truth, attempts to apply it as an ultimate standard, and either it works or it doesn't-- it is not subject to unlimited reinterpretation to 'make it work'. Whereas, the more liberal one's theological mindset is, the more flexible one is with reinterpretation. And I find this view to be inherently irrational. The problem with Islam is that conservative Islamic theology, which takes the Quran and hadiths straightforwardly, leads to a totalitarian system, whereas liberal Islamic theology may very well be benign but unfortunately it leads to some very muddled standards. Either Muhammad was a true prophet or he wasn't. It makes no sense to say that yes, he was a true prophet, but that most of the things he said should be interpreted to mean something other than what they seem to mean on their face.

the pic in the video is not visible enough which made me think same as you. to lower left letters say peace if the pic displayed in full you would've also notice a flower sprouting from the barrel.

He says that because there is no central authority in Islam, no one can say that Osama bin Laden's version of the religion is invalid, or that he is not a Muslim. This is actually true as far as it goes: there is no central authority in Islam.
........................

Is anyone else sick of this tired crap? The fact is that Islam as applied is amazingly consistent—and no surprise, since pious Muslims all work from the same vile texts of Islam.

This is why, for instance, you consistently find the imposition of Shari'ah leading to amputations and stoning.

Also, it is only Catholicism, certain types of Orthodoxy, and a handful of other Christian denominations that have a clear, central authority. Certainly, there is no central authority for Christianity as a whole.

And even with the most centralized denomination—Catholicism—you find many who disagree with the Pope on many issues who nonetheless consider themselves good Catholics. This is especially true with American Catholics. (Whether this is always a good thing or not I will leave to others to decide).

In any case, it never leads to the same savagery as one regularly finds in Islam.

And institutions like Al Azhar in Egypt has enormous influence in Sunni Islam, as do the Iranian Ayatollahs in Shi'ite Islam.

The thing is that rulings on both their parts are so frequently savage—and always on the model of the "Prophet" and the texts of Islam.

Aslan's implication that Islam is 'whatever one says it is' is *demonstrably false*.

Just look at the murderous response to someone like Irshad Manji.

Certainly, no Christian in the West is going to react in such a manner to some splinter-sect unorthodox follower of Christ, no matter how "out of left field" they may be.

More:

But in reality, the practice of takfir, or declaring that some individual or group has so deviated from the faith that it can no longer be called Muslim, is a time-honored principle of Islamic theology; that Aslan will not employ it against those Muslims who believe the way bin Laden did is revealing.
........................

Exactly so. But what you *do* find is pious Muslims who not only gleefully declare other Muslims to be "insufficiently Islamic", "non-Muslim" or "apostate", but also find that they are willing to slaughter these now "non-Muslims".

Of course, they would *never* target someone like bin Laden in this manner, but just "moderate", liberal, or lax Muslims.
