Robert Spencer: New York Review of Books calls for criminalizing of criticism of Islam

Over at Atlas Shrugs I discuss yet another example of a Leftist mainstream media outlet asking that its own throat be cut:

A piece published last week in the New York Review of Books and written by the formerly respectable Islamic scholar Malise Ruthven is so full of errors, false claims, and inaccuracies that it is surprising that the New York Review of Books published it at all. On the other hand, as the mainstream media increasingly abandons all pretense of objective reporting and becomes ever more a propaganda arm for the Left and Islamic supremacists, it isn’t all that surprising after all.

In it Ruthven expatiates at length about what he thinks is “hate speech” directed at Muslims. Invoking Salman Rushdie’s criticism of the crude video of Muhammad that was recently blamed for riots and murders all over the Islamic world, Ruthven says: “On the motives behind the film Rushdie is surely right: researchers have revealed close connections between Nakoula, a militant Coptic separatist, and out-and-out Islamophobes such as Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer. (Indeed, even as people in the Middle East were rioting against the film in late September, Geller was sponsoring a controversial anti-Muslim advertising campaign in the New York subway, raising questions about hate speech in the United States.)”

This is actually false in every respect. Pamela Geller and I have no connections whatsoever, close or otherwise, to Nakoula, who may not be a "militant Coptic separatist" or a Copt at all. Geller's advertising was not "anti-Muslim," but against jihad attacks against innocent civilians. Ruthven's use of the manipulative and inaccurate media slogans "anti-Muslim" and "Islamophobe" is unworthy of him as a scholar, as is his willing propagation of the spurious concept of "Islamophobia," which Islamic supremacist groups use nowadays to intimidate people into thinking that there is something wrong and "racist" about resisting jihad.

After that, Ruthven’s piece gets really risible. “Matthew Feldman, a political scientist,” Ruthven notes, “has used the term “Christianism” to describe ultra-right-wing anti-Muslim polemicists such as Geller and the Quran-burning pastor Terry Jones, who also supported the film, in order to highlight their similarities to their Islamist enemies. Both rely on religious feelings to mobilize much larger groups because of the esteem for their respective religions in the broader cultures in which they reside.”

This is even more of a howler than Ruthven's claim that we were behind the Muhammad movie: Pamela Geller, who is deeply proud of her Jewish identity, is now a "Christianist" who is relying on "religious feelings" to "mobilize larger groups"? It is astonishing that Ruthven would have the audacity to write about people that he clearly knows nothing about. In reality, the American Freedom Defense Initiative that Pamela Geller and I head up is not a religious organization, but is dedicated to defending the freedom of speech, the freedom of conscience, and the equality of rights of all people before the law. Clearly these are "ultra-right-wing anti-Muslim" goals!

Ultimately, after a great deal of long-winded chatter that doesn’t get much of anywhere, Ruthven calls for the criminalization of criticism of Islam as “hate speech”: “These contrasting responses suggest the possibility of a two-pronged approach to the free speech issues raised by images of the Prophet. ‘Insulting’ the Prophet with the intent of stirring up hatred might be categorized as a form of ‘hate speech’ comparable to anti-Semitism, racism, flag desecration, or Holocaust denial, which are forbidden by law in many countries (though not the US, where a proposed amendment protecting the US flag failed to pass by a single Senate vote in 2006), because the sacred image of the Prophet has become a fundamental part of how Muslim communities have come to define themselves. While in practice it may be difficult to draw the line between ‘insult’ and ‘criticism,’ if there is a distinction it must lie in intention.”

Who will judge intentions, once Ruthven's authoritarian law is passed? What will Malise Ruthven do if someone in power decides that something he has written about Islam was actually intended to “insult” Muslims, rather than to provide reasonable “criticism”? And why is the New York Review of Books publishing this invitation to the suicide of the free press?

So now we learn why the Obama administration has been supporting the Muslim Brotherhood revolutions throughout the Mid-East: it's to install regimes willing and able to deal with the threat from these Christianists and militant Coptics! Well done, BHO! You and your gang were on top of this all along.

NOW AN ORDER BANNING A BOOK READS

MALAYSIA GOVERNMENT ORDER BANNING MY BOOK PUNISHABLE BY 3 YEARS IN JAIL\
To understand what an order banning a book is read the order banning my book ISLAM EVIL IN THE NAME OF GOD™ in Malaysia and attempt to ban it in London.

MALAYSIA TYRANNY

Islamic tyranny on display in modern, moderate Malaysia. Malaysian government has banned the book, "Islam: Evil in the Name of God". One can be jail for three years, plus fined, for possessing, publishing or distributing the book.
Those of you who think that censorship regarding Islam will not happen in the USA because of the First Amendment – dream on. The code words for banning ALL examination of Islam, the teachings of the Quran and Prophet Muhammad are given in this order namely: “evil effort, sow hate, negative sentiments, falsehoods about character of Muhammad and sanctity of Islam, could threaten the peace.” Its just a matter of time before a lawsuit is filed in the USA stating that all those who oppose Islam are spreading hatred against Muslims and by doing so are threatening the peace.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - The Home Ministry has gazetted a prohibitory order against the publishing of a book entitled Islam Evil in the Name of God on July 7 for containing false narrative facts.

The ministry's Publication Control Section and Al-Quran Text secretary Abd Aziz Md Nor said the narrative facts in the book were totally false, especially those involving the character of Prophet Muhammad and the sanctity of Islam.

* "The publication is the evil effort of certain quarters to sow hatred and negative sentiments against Islam among non-Muslims. If the publishing is allowed, it could threaten peace."

* He said the ban was in accordance with Section 7 (1) of the Printing Presses and Publication.

PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION OF BRITAIN

UK’s Daily Mail reports that the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) has demanded banning my new book “Prophet Muhammad: Monster of History”, which is distributed by Amazon.com in the UK. Saying that ‘Freedom of expression should not be unlimited, and publications that cause anti-Muslim hatred, anti-Jewish hatred or homophobic hatred should not be allowed’, the Muslim Council of Britain called on Amazon to ‘take proper responsibility’ for the content of the books on its site.

Adding support to the MCB’s demand for censorship, Richard Mollet, chief executive of the Publishers Association, said: ‘It’s time internet companies did start to take a better look at their practices and behaved more responsibly.’

Labour MP Paul Flynn also jumped in to support MCB’s call for censorship by saying: ‘If Amazon is providing the platform for books that wouldn’t be published otherwise, it is responsible.’

Commentator Chris Core just called Pamela Geller's subway ads the moral equivalent of shouting "Fire" in a crowded building. Hence, I wrote him the following:

********************

Dear Mr. Core:

Generally, I welcome hearing your commentary on my drive home from work (I'm a teacher, and my 8 hours are a bit earlier than most). However, I take exception to your attack on the ads calling on people to support Israel as the equivalent of yelling "Fire!" in a crowded building.

I've done a bit of thinking about the ferment in the Islamic world since the killing of Ambassador Stevens. First of all, I believe that even though the film _Innocence of Muslims_ probably was only a pretext (the film had been out for months before the attacks; the attacks happened 9/11; and you don't bring RPG's to a 'spontaneous' mob event). However, maybe it behooves the Muslim 'Ummah to consider if its own nasty treatment of the Dhimmi peoples (Armenian, Syriac, and Coptic Christians among others; Mizrahi Jews as well) over the centuries as one reason why someone like Nakhoula Bassiley Nakhoula makes a film critical of Islam once he's in the USA.

In our own times, the world of Islam has thoroughly uprooted and expelled the ancient Jewish communities of Yemen, Syria, Egypt, and Iraq. The last-mentioned had roughly 150-160,000 Jews in the 1940's, with one in four urban Iraqis a Jew. This community went all the way back to the 8th century B.C. (14 centuries before Muhammad), produced the Talmud Bavli, and indeed was the "Second Homeland" of Jewry after 'Eretz Yisroel. The Jewish community of Egypt was roughly of the same antiquity. That of Yemen may even have begun before the First Temple was destroyed. Yet these communities are gone because of the furor islamicus. The Jewish communities of the Maghreb are dwindling, and, in the wake of the much-ballyhooed "Arab Spring", the last Jews of Tunisia have come under pressure.

The Muslim Brotherhood in its wonderful "moderation" (of which our administration assures us) has created a climate in which the Coptic Christian minority is living in fear. Our wonderful Syrian rebels, in their righteous anger at the Assad regime, is forcing Christians out of their villages and taking them hostage. This is all the more poignant when you consider that as late as the French Mandate, one in five Syrians and more than half the Lebanese were Christian and that Saladin ruled an Egypt whose population probably still had a slight Christian majority.

And what ever gave Muslims the right to think that any real or imagined grievance gives them the right to riot, burn, murder diplomats, and try to force a worldwide anti-blasphemy law (designed to protect the good name of Islam alone) down the throats of the rest of us? It's nothing but ta kind of bald-faced, shameless supremacism. What besides a sense of entitlement and unabashed supremacism? Do we dare curtail our freedom of expression, speech, and the exercise of non-Islamic religions simply because the Muslim temper s are so easily offended? This is only an invitation for the kind of Islamic bullying under which the Dhimmi peoples of the Middle East have lived for 1400 years.

And as for the Falastin Arabs, over whose plight the state-owned media of the Arab and Muslim countries incites the mobs to violence against America on a daily basis, how is it that our own many-times-accursed America has given passport-holding, voting rights, property-holding, public office-eligible citizenship to more victims of an-Nakhbar and their descendants than any seven members of the Arab league put together? Indeed, apart from Jordan, the PA, and Israel itself, the Falastin Arabs are stateless refugees even now in their fourth and fifth generations. The PA has even suggested that families who originated in land that became pre-1967 Israel would not enjoy full citizen in the West Bank and Gaza! How can this possibly be countenanced by the world in a generation that has seen Delhi-born Pervez Musharaf sit down with Lahore-born Manmohan Singh to try to defuse tensions between India and Pakistan, two countries that in 1947 absorbed refugees in the tens of millions without a dime of UN money? It is utterly shameful that the civilized world has not called the Arab world to question over this, considering that more than half of the Israelis descend from Muslim-majority countries (especially Arabic-speaking ones).

Now, I am not for insulting people, and I'm not for burning books. I wouldn't even burn _Mein Kampf_ and the Little Red Book. But why did the Obama administration choose to give celebrity to the justly obscure Terry Jones in the wake of the Qur'an burning and the equally obscure Nakhoula Nakhoula in the wake of the September riots? Why couldn't it have taken a "teaching moment" to explain to the world that we have such a thing as the First Amendment in this country, and we won't apologize for it? Worst of all when Hillary Clinton did get around to mentioning the First Amendment a few days after the riots and killings, she sounded tinny, and a bit as if she were speaking a poorly mastered second language (I teach ESOL and elementary Chinese, among other things). It seems as if we're living with an administration that, to please political clients (the sexually liberated with the HHS order that religious employers must provide contraceptive and abortion coverage; the abject apology to the foreign crowds chanting "Obama, Obama, we are all Osama"), it will suggest that the First Amendment is too dangerous a thing to be left where the yokels can use it. This is one reason why I believe that Obama and his party deserve to lose in a landslide (although I think they'll probably win).

Asking the Obama administration to remember its oath to uphold the Constitution (including the First Amendment) and reminding the Muslim world that it is high time it shed its shameless supremacism, bullying, and hair-trigger temper are heart values for me.

Sincerely,

[Uncle Kepha, contact info]

P.S.: I did some reading in the Qur'an and Hadith after 9/11, and came out of it utterly appalled, but with a little more understanding of why both Mr. Bush and Mr. Obama got their hands bitten when they proffered them to the world of Islam.

This Ruthven is only doing what moslemites have done throughout history vis-a-vis non-moslemites. Picking and choosing among the sometimes most miniscule data available to create a promoslem picture. This is what I read in all proislamic literature especially that written by moslemites themselves. The problem is that thinking Americans and Europeans can find the truth for themselves when they chose.

Ruthven says: “On the motives behind the film Rushdie is surely right...
.......................

Doesn't Ruthven realize that one of the most absurd aspects of quoting Salman Rushdie here—even more than what he gets wrong—is that Rushdie *himself* is under a death Fatwa?

Rushdie may posit himself a "non-Islamophobic", but that hasn't stopped pious Muslims from murdering his colleagues and gunning for him, as well.

More:

...researchers have revealed close connections between Nakoula, a militant Coptic separatist, and out-and-out Islamophobes such as Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer. (Indeed, even as people in the Middle East were rioting against the film in late September, Geller was sponsoring a controversial anti-Muslim advertising campaign in the New York subway, raising questions about hate speech in the United States.)
.......................

Note this phrasing—this implies that Pamela Geller should have backed off pointing out how violent Islam is, *precisely because Muslims were being violent*.

Also, note his sly implication that Geller's "hate speech" was—somehow—*responsible* for Muslims rioting in the streets and murdering our diplomats.

The implication would be the same if you posited that no one should criticize Fascism, lest Nazis react violently. Moreover, that his sympathy would be with the "offended" Nazis.

More:

After that, Ruthven’s piece gets really risible. “Matthew Feldman, a political scientist,” Ruthven notes, “has used the term “Christianism” to describe ultra-right-wing anti-Muslim polemicists such as Geller and the Quran-burning pastor Terry Jones, who also supported the film, in order to highlight their similarities to their Islamist enemies. Both rely on religious feelings to mobilize much larger groups because of the esteem for their respective religions in the broader cultures in which they reside.”
.......................

More sly implication. Not only is it—as noted—to refer to Ms. Geller, who is both Jewish and an atheist Objectivist as "Chistianist", but the implication here is that these "Christianists" are as dangerous as "Islamists"—even though the violence is all on the part of Muslims.

More:

While in practice it may be difficult to draw the line between ‘insult’ and ‘criticism,’ if there is a distinction it must lie in intention.”
.......................

So what? If someone—say Ruthven himself—finds that Rushdie's "Satanic Verses" constitutes 'criticism', while Nakoula's "Innocence of Muslims" trailer and Geller's subway ads constitute 'insult', what difference will that make to violent Muslims? None whatsoever.

It will, however, erode American—and, by extension—Western freedoms considerably.

In the end, that may well be Malise Ruthven's goal...
