Syria accuses U.S., France of arming, funding "terrorists"

Everyone knows that the Assad regime is evil, and therefore the rebel groups must be wonderful, and that al-Moualem must be lying -- right? "Syria Accuses US, France of Arming, Funding 'Terrorists,'" by Michelle Nichols and Louis Charbonneau for Reuters, October 7:

(Reuters) -- Syria accused the United States, France, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey on Monday of hijacking the country's 18-month conflict between government forces and pro-democracy rebel groups by supporting "terrorism" with arms, money and foreign fighters.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem told the U.N. General Assembly that outside calls for President Bashar al-Assad to step down were a "blatant interference in the domestic affairs of Syria, and the unity of its people and its sovereignty."

Earlier on Monday, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with Moualem and strongly criticized the Syrian government for killings, rights abuses, aerial and artillery attacks, and expressed frustration that the conflict was worsening.

Speaking on the final day of the annual gathering of the 193-nation assembly, Moualem said that Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United States, and France "clearly induce and support terrorism in Syria with money, weapons and foreign fighters."

"Under the pretext of concepts such as the 'Responsibility to Protect,' drums of war are beaten, and sedition and unrest are spreading and damaging the structure of national societies," Moualem said.

He was referring to a concept about governments' responsibility to protect civilians that has become increasingly popular in Western diplomatic and academic circles. The concept was used to justify last year's military intervention in Libya.

"Worst of all is to see permanent members of the Security Council, who launched wars under the pretext of combating terrorism, now support terrorism in my country," Moualem said....

'Responsibility to protect' is selective...It is an excuse rather than a reason...Moualem has a point...

maybe true

look at Britain , France , etc , how they became a safe haven to terrorists not less US.
stop that rubbish

'Responsibility to Protect.'

Where does it begin, and where does it end? I feel fine with protecting myself and my closest supporters; but others might feel I have no such right to protect myself when I could as easily call 911 and get the police to do so for me sometime later in the event. Or, there might be interventionists who think they should "save" children from Christian parents, and so on. There will never be any agreement, no boundaries, no resolution, no real answer but the rule of guns and fire.

There is no right answer and no right, universal response; therefore, it is up to the individual to decide, and if he has the guns, the issue is then settled as well as it can be till next time.

We in the free Modern West are right. I say so. I fight for that position to be the only position. All opponents are wrong, and they must submit to freedom as I see it or resist and hope I never have the power to subdue them. There's little more to add to this Hobbesean world than that, I think so. We kill Islam, and we are right. Or we lose and we are dead.

Syria's correct. We aided Qaida sympathizers in Libya as they fought against Qaddafi (and I admit that Qaddafi was an unpalatable shmo, too). Now, we seem to be getting sucked into supporting one group of enemies against another group of enemies in Syria.

It seems a reasonable enough accusation, though that's irrelevant in a mad world going proudly madder.

We have thought that all along. As much as we dislike the regime, they ARE the legitimate rulers.

It is amazing to watch NPR and other leftist radicals spewing their misplaced compassion for the rebels ALL OVER the Arab world. They are stirring the pot, just as they do for OWS. They are after their utopia, and they can't have that until the hornets are swarming on Israel.

That is the objective.
Israel
Utopia

And when the elitists discover that the umma bows to no man, especially atheists,it will be too late, since there will be no guns, no armies, no money,no courage.

Thank you, Mr. Soros.

I'd say it's a tad ironic. In the 80s, the Syrians were busy supporting terrorism, be it Hizbullah & Hamas, and were next only to Iran, Iraq & Libya. It's only recently that they seem to have broken w/ Hamas, not b'cos they think Hamas is bad, but b'cos suddenly, the fact that the Assad regime is largely Alawite suddenly matters to Hamas. For the regime that backs Hizbullah, this is a funny case of 'pot, kettle, black'.

But I'm glad that w/ Russian and Chinese support, Syria has bucked the trend and kept the Sunni rebels @ bay. Hope the Saudis, Pakis, Iranians and Lebanese keep sending in more martyrs on either side.

Absolutely. Don't lose sight of the fact that depending on our ulterior motive the US has supported MANY genocidal dictators. Also don't lose sight of the fact that the US government is one of the most corrupt in the world and this is my mantra: Love your country; Hate the government.

Its a farce that Mr Romney "Israel best friend" wants to supply the "Syrian Opposition" with Arms according to the guardian. Are you kidding Mr Romney? It seems this guy does not have any idea of foreign policy ! A Jihadi Talibani State in Syria would be for "Israels Security" a blessing ! This guy is threat for the International Peace like his Master Netaniahoo! Wow what a a duette!

Yeah, well ... they're curiously selective about who they claim they have to "protect".

Somehow I don't think that Egyptian, Nigerian and Iraqi Christians are going to receive that sort of concern.

Help the Syrian Christians - whether Syriac Orthodox, Catholic or Armenian Orthodox - to get safely out. Many of them are actually refugees from *Iraq*, from which - mercilessly persecuted, robbed, raped, attacked, kidnapped, murdered by Muslim sharia thugs - they fled into Syria. **They** are the only people in that maelstrom that we should be worrying about and trying to help. Get them out! the West should not be helping the 'rebels'; it should be talking to Russia about ways and means of getting the Christians out to safety.

Then leave the Shiites and Alawites and Sunnis to fight and bite and devour each other; and for god's sake, don't let *any* Syrian Muslim (*OR* Alawite) 'refugees' into the West, they will only cause trouble.

For every Syrian Muslim that might - as our own dear 'fineliving' has done, and as the courageous Wafa Sultan has done - see the light and apostasise, there are thousands upon thousands that won't; best not to take the risk.
