Your post pretends that the Islamic system of 'zero interest' actually exists. It doesn't! Interest *is* payable on loans in Islam, it's just that it's not called interest, as such. It's called 'bank charges', or some other name.
Bank charges in Islamic banking are far higher than in the traditional banking system to accommodate the hidden 'interest' payments!

A simple example: Let's say a Muslim wants to buy a car. The Muslim bank buys the car on behalf of the customer and then the customer is milked by repayments to the bank that far exceed the price of the car. These payments include 'admin charges' or 'bank charges' or some other neutral name. However, the final price paid by the customer to a Muslim bank is strangely similar to the payments with interest *and* bank charges paid by any other customer of a traditional bank.

Islamic banking is a con. Just another mirage from the spiritual dust bowl of Islam.

Your post is an implicit criticism of Robert Spencer through your comment that he is aligned '...rather snuggly with the Islamic viewpoint.'

You suggest, then, that his position is contradictory.

However, among the luminaries you name-drop, you include G K Chesterton. Chesterton certainly felt sorry for the working man who he believed was being exploited, but his feelings were a result of the empathy/sympathy he felt for his fellow man.
Islam's position on interest payable on loans, however, arises from racist hatred of the Jews.

So, lining up Islam alongside your list of luminaries is a tad bizarre, to say the least.

With respect, Yaffle, I believe you are somewhat missing the point here. I probably wouldn't deal with Wonga.com myself, from everything I've heard. But Shari'ah bars *all* lending with interest; including mortgages, business loans, and student loans—not just such sketchy lending as "sub prime" mortgages, paycheck advances, or out-and-out loansharking.

This—along with other forms of Islamic law—means that social mobility virtually grinds to a halt—we see the results of this in the terrible schlerotic economies and grinding poverty of the Muslin world. *This* is what they want to impose on the West.

What *absolute crap*. The vulnerable and needy are oppressed, exploited, and abused under Islam. In fact, pious Muslims want to revive *open slavery* in Dar-al-Islam.

The idea that the poor in Britain are more exploited than in the Muslim world simply could not be more grotesque.

I rose from growing up on welfare and living on the street to becoming a home-owner and business owner, and I did it in part through access to student loans and a good fixed-rate mortgage—things that are utterly Haram under Islam. We have always been very careful with credit—for instance, neither my husband nor I use credit cards—but having access to credit for certain key uses has made a great difference in the quality of our lives.

The "Islamic system" is based on bullsh*t and sleight-of-hand—the interest is simply hidden in other fees. But mostly, it ensures that most people have no access to credit at all. Starting a business or buying property in Dar-al-Islam is extraordinarily difficult, and out of reach for many ordinary people who lack connections.

But more than the issue of "Shari'ah finance", even—this gives Shari'ah norms a foot in the door in the civilized West, and entré for greater Shari'ah horrors, like oppression of women and Infidels.

And we all know where Shari'ah norms lead—to amputations for petty theft and stonings of women in the streets. *Any* move towards Shari'ah norms has to be staunchly opposed.

When the West finally allowed the charging of reasonable interest—we see this first with the rise of the great Italian banks during the Renaissance—the West flowered.

Standard of living, life expectancy, education, the arts all flourished.

You may want us to believe that a return to the dark ages is in line with "classical Western values", but what else would one expect from a Muslim apologist such as yourself?

And, as already noted, "Shari'ah finance" is just the camel's nose under the tent here—Shari'ah in general would destroy every decent aspect of the West, and all the freedoms we have spent centuries establishing and defending.
