Did Obama write anti-Semitic poetry?

Sure looks like it. "Did Obama Write Anti-Semitic Poetry?," by Jack Cashill in the American Thinker, October 31 (thanks to Anne Crockett):

As a 19-year-old sophomore, Barack Obama had two poems -- "Underground" and "Pop" -- published under his name in the spring 1981 edition of Occidental College's literary magazine, Feast.  If Obama wrote any other poems after that, they have not emerged.

"Pop," the more sophisticated of the two poems, has attracted the most attention.  As I argued in my book, Deconstructing Obama, "Pop" dissects Obama's relationship with his communist mentor, Frank Marshall Davis, and was most likely written by Davis himself, a skilled poet.

"Underground" struck me as Obama's own handiwork.  It is as different in style and substance from "Pop" as Obama's early published essays are from his memoir, Dreams from My Father, with which he also had help.  "Republishing this poem may have been the cruelest swipe an otherwise friendly media took at Obama during the campaign," I wrote dismissively in my book.

Jim O'Hagan, who has made a study of the poem, believes that I may have been too hasty in my dismissal.  He may well be right.

First, the poem:

UNDERGROUND
Under water grottos, caverns
Filled with apes
That eat figs.
Stepping on the figs
That the apes
Eat, they crunch.
The apes howl, bare
Their fangs, dance,
Tumble in the
Rushing water,
Musty, wet pelts
Glistening in the blue.

One friendly critic described the poem as a "vivid if obscurely symbolic description of a tribe of submarine primates."  I countered, "Although arguably the best poem ever written about submarine primates, most of Obama's literary acolytes have largely -- and charitably -- chosen not to notice it."

O'Hagan, however, chose to notice.  He points out that both of the poem's most conspicuous symbols, apes and figs, are mentioned in the Qur'an.  Middle Eastern scholar Bernard Lewis has argued that although Muslims were relatively tolerant of Jews, there are at least three passages in the Qur'an in which Jews are denounced as "apes."  In sura 5.60, for instance, the Quran reads, "[Worse is he] whom Allah has cursed and brought His wrath upon, and of whom He made apes and swine."  "Swine" is apparently the epithet of choice for Christians, but "Underground" is not about swine.  It is about apes -- belligerent, boastful apes at that.

In 1981, when Obama submitted this poem, he was plotting his forthcoming summer trip to Pakistan, a Muslim country.  By all accounts, given his education in Indonesia and his choice of friends in America, he was a knowledgeable fellow-traveler in the world of Islam.  By 1981, too, Israel had emerged as a source of evil in the eyes of both radical Muslims and the international left.

The reference to "figs" strengthens O'Hagan's case that the "apes" refer to Jews, or at least to Israeli Jews.  He cites the 95th sura of the Quran, "At-Tin," which translates as "fig" or "fig tree."  It reads in part: "[I Swear] By the fig and [by] the olive/ And [I Swear by] Mount Sinai/ And [I Swear by] this secure land [of the city of Makkah]."

Writes Muhammad Asad, author of The Message of The Qur'an, "The 'fig' and the 'olive' symbolize, in this context, the lands in which these trees predominate: i.e., the countries bordering on the eastern part of the Mediterranean, especially Palestine and Syria."

Readers of "Underground" are left with only two real choices.  They can write it off as a silly undergraduate poem about apes that step on figs, as I originally did, or they can interpret it as an allegory.  If the latter, it seems altogether possible that the poet believes that these warlike apes, the Jews of Israel, are exploiting, even despoiling the land in which they have settled.  Note that the apes both "eat" the figs and are "stepping on" them.

O'Hagan make a case that the "grottos" in question refer to the famous Rosh HaNikra grottos in Israel, located on the Mediterranean just south of the Lebanese border.  The grottos are known for their startlingly blue waters, but blue is also the traditional color of Israel as manifested in the Israeli flag.  In 1981, the year the poem was written, Israel was almost continuously involved in repelling PLO attacks from Lebanon, a country it invaded in 1978 and would invade again in 1982.

Read it all.

Another poem has surfaced from his Occidental years, an Oriental love poem written to his Pakistani Muslim roommate, "Hal" Siddiqi:

I die of love for him, perfect in every way,
Lost in the strains of wafting music.
My eyes are fixed upon his delightful body
And I do not wonder at his beauty.
His waist is a sapling, his face a moon,
And loveliness rolls off his rosy cheek
I die of love for you, but keep this secret:
The tie that binds us is an unbreakable rope.
How much time did your creation take, O angel?
So what! All I want is to sing your praises.

"Middle Eastern scholar Bernard Lewis has argued that although Muslims were relatively tolerant of Jews..."

Yes, just as the Sun can be said to be "relatively" cold -- when you're billions of light years distant from it...

As a somewhat established poet myself, I can first say that "Underground" is a pretty bad poem. It is both poorly written and quite distasteful in tone.

But I believe Jack Cashill is correct in his analysis—to read this as being about "a tribe of submarine primates" is obviously silly. The piece is clearly symbolic—the question is, symbolic of what?

Certainly, it could be seen as a critique of man's lower nature—but I believe reading this as antisemitic seems more likely.

The symbolism is straight out of the Qur'an—Suras 7:166, 2:65, and 5:60. It would also imply that Obama picked up a lot more in those childhood Qur'an classes than he has led us to believe...

Figs, as a Middle Eastern fruit, are closely linked in the popular imagination with the Muslim world. That the apes (Jews) are wantonly destroying the figs may be seen as symbolic of Jews destroying both the "Palestinians" and the fruit (wealth) of the Muslim world by the very existence of Israel. Never mind that this view is utter bullsh*t—it is very common among Muslims and Muslim apologists.

Caves are symbolic in Islam, as well. One Sura of the Qur'an is Sura Al-Kahf (The Cave). It tells the story of Muslims who fled to a cave because they were threatened with stoning by the unbelievers (talk about projection!). Allah causes them to sleep for centuries; they reaffirm their faith in Islam when they are awakened.

This same Sura goes on to recount how Allah destroys the fruit of unbelievers.

Verse 18:41 provides the likely reference for the title of Obama's poem:

"Or the water thereof (of the gardens) becomes deep-sunken *underground* so that you will never be able to seek it." [emphasis mine—GI]

In other words, that Allah withdraws his favor from the filthy unbelievers who have rejected Islam.

This Sura also contains the disturbing story of Al-Kidr, the "green man". "Musa" (Moses) travels with him, while he does such edifying things as murdering young boys. Al-Kidr notes before they begin traveling together that Musa will not proper "patience" with Al-Kidr's brutality. (He murdered the boy because he would eventually become an apostate, which would upset his parents. So much better just to slaughter the child, as pious Muslims see it).

Even though "Musa" is posited here as a "prophet of Islam", he is nonetheless so linked to the history of the Jews that he is presented as a doubter of the wisdom of Islam's savagery—which is considered a grave failing.

The whole Sura is a excoriation of unbelief and the doomed state of unbelievers, and that their success in this world should not lead Muslims to believe that they are not essentially debased, or that Allah won't have his "revenge" on them.

This fits well with Obama's unpleasant bit of verse.

Excellent catch by Mr. Cashill.

Where did this poem come from Lemonlime? Was it written by Obama or by somebody else? I wouldn't be surprised if he plagiarised it.

The poem you found reads like an overture for a gay Sorrows of Young Wherther story. In this case though, life did not imitate art. Obama didn't die of love for anybody.

A Google search turned up this:

http://www.gay-art-history.org/gay-history/gay-literature/gay-mythology-folktales/arab-gay-folktales/abu-nuwas-gay/abu-nuwas-gay-biography.html

The poem's title is Love in Bloom and was apparently written by someone called Abu Nuwas who gets the sobriquet, "Father of Curls."

If President Obama is also gay, not that we ought to care about that, it's just another one of his deceptions.

And as for Obama's anti-Semitism, Underground is a damning bit of evidence - one of many.

Hope he loses big on Tuesday.

Please quote your source.

classicus and ImNoDhimmi,

Sorry, I guess I was being too subtly cheeky. The poem I used for my little satire is from the (in)famous gay Arab Muslim poet, Abu Nuwas:

http://www.gay-art-history.org/gay-history/gay-literature/gay-mythology-folktales/arab-gay-folktales/abu-nuwas-gay/abu-nuwas-gay-biography.html

Ummm, I'm not sure about this one.

Granted, I'm a Nobama '012 man to the bone, but the possibility that Obama's "apes" refer to Jews is only one possibility of many, and not necessarily a compelling one.

I too hope he loses big, classicus, for reasons related to wonderful things like the preservation of the Constitution and the uniqueness and greatness of America. Hope you're doing well, my friend.

LemonLime and Classicus—excellent stuff! I *thought* that poem seemed a bit familiar....

I'm always impressed by the sheer level of erudition of many posters here at Jihad Watch. Mostly on matters of Islam, of course, but on many other subjects, as well.

And Classicus, good to see you posting. Hope you are well.

Wellington,

Vale amice.

I admit to being biased. I didn’t like Obama from the beginning. He looked and sounded like an unctuous liar.

Even from the few details we had about his short time in elected office, one could see that he was more given to strutting and outlandish ambition, than to stepping forward to serve with the quiet confidence of solid accomplishments behind him.

He is nothing like some of the military people and people from the intelligence services I know – people who have worked hard for years in dangerous assignments to prepare for the difficulty of command, knowing that if they make a mistake, and they will, others will die and that there will no one to blame and no do overs.

Before earning the nomination in 2008, candidate Obama pledged that he would take only public money for his campaign. After he wrested the nomination from Hillary Clinton, - surprise - he made an announcement taking it back. He would be using private money for his presidential bid after all. It was lie number one with more dissembling to come.

Before he took office the pattern was set. One could tell that his would be a secretive administration focused on making him look good.

His books - which add nothing to general knowledge - are all about himself; and he has aligned his problems of personal identity with a leftist ideology. One of Gloria Steinem’s most famous sayings is probably, “the personal is political,” and President Obama has certainly proved that. His presidency is about his grievances squeezed through the leftist “school of resentment” idea and slapped together as his vision of hope and change.

When he announced the end of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” he said that gay military people ought to be able to commit themselves to a marriage and also, “ I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf...” He must have forgotten that when someone in the military recites the loyalty oath, it is to the U.S. Constitution that they give their allegiance, not to him. If Harvard still teaches constitutional law in their school, Barack Obama must have taken those classes stoned on weed.

It’s too bad we didn't take his poetry into account when deciding whether or not he was fit for office; for if we could have, he might still be a senator, if that. His poetry does not reach the level of even Rod Mckuen’s, that king of the twirling greeting card rack, and eyesore of every supermarket.

If Barack Obama is re-elected, the only the way the country can save itself from his narcissism, Islamophila, and the stupidity of his agenda, will be if the Benghazi scandal takes over his second term. I see that happening – particularly if Romney wins the popular vote. If Benghazi does take the president down, I hope the House impeaches him, and the Senate tries him and sends him home in shame.

Ok, rant over sir.

Good to see your posts. Hope you and all of yours are well.

Hello gravenimage. Good to hear from you.

Thank you for your kind comments, but compared to you, dumbledoresarmy, Wellington, Kepha, Dr. Dowse, and traeh, among others, I’m more wordy and long-winded than erudite.

A while back, I read that you will be voting for Romeny. I’m sure you know who I’m voting for by now. Hope we’re not disappointed.

Of course, I hope and yours are safe, dry, and happy.

I enjoyed your rant at least as much as you did, classicus. After all, some rants are justified, such as yours. Sure as hell hope Romney wins. And I also hope Benghazi eventually shames Obama for all time.

Ditto the same for Sec'y Hillary.
