Egyptian jihad leader calls for destruction of Sphinx, Pyramids

“All Muslims are charged with applying the teachings of Islam to remove such idols, as we did in Afghanistan when we destroyed the Buddha statues.”

"‘Destroy the idols,’ Egyptian jihadist calls for removal of Sphinx, Pyramids," from Al Arabiya, November 12 (thanks to Voice of the Copts):

An Egyptian jihad leader, with self-professed links to the Taliban, called for the “destruction of the Sphinx and the Giza Pyramids in Egypt,” drawing ties between the Egyptian relics and Buddha statues, local media reported this week.

Murgan Salem al-Gohary, an Islamist leader twice-sentenced under former President Hosni Mubarak for advocating violence, called on Muslims to remove such “idols.”

“All Muslims are charged with applying the teachings of Islam to remove such idols, as we did in Afghanistan when we destroyed the Buddha statues,” he said on Saturday during a television interview on an Egyptian private channel, widely watched by Egyptian and Arab audiences.

“God ordered Prophet Mohammed to destroy idols,” he added. “When I was with the Taliban we destroyed the statue of Buddha, something the government failed to do.”

His comments came a day after thousands of ultraconservative Islamists gathered in Tahrir Square to call for the strict application of Sharia law in the new constitution.

But in retaliation to Gohary’s remarks, the vice president of Tunisia’s Ennahda party, Sheikh Abdel Fattah Moro, called the live program and told Gohary that famous historic military commander Amr ibn al-Aas did not destroy statues when he conquered Egypt.

“So who are you to do it?” he wondered. “The Prophet destroyed the idols because people worshiped them, but the Sphinx and the Pyramids are not worshiped.”

Gohary, 50, is well-known in Egypt for his advocacy of violence, Egypt Independent reported.

“He was sentenced twice, one of the two sentences being life imprisonment. He subsequently fled Egypt to Afghanistan, where he was badly injured in the American invasion. In 2007, he traveled from Pakistan to Syria, which then handed him over to Egypt. After Mubarak's fall in early 2011, he was released from prison by a judicial ruling,” the newspaper added.

In recent months, fears have surfaced that the ultra-conservative Salafi political powers may soon wish to debate new guidelines over Egyptian antiquities.

Islamists have swept the recent presidential and parliamentary elections in the country’s post-revolutionary stage, with the Muslim Brotherhood and the ultra-conservative Salafi Islamists rising to political power.

“The fundamental Salafis have demanded to cover Pharaonic statues, because they regard them to be idols,” Egyptian author on ancient history Ahmed Osman told Al Arabiya English, explaining that Salafi Muslims follow conservative religious principles which view statues and sculptures as prohibited in Islam.

“But so far the government has done nothing to indicate what is the future of Egyptian antiquities,” adds Osman....

Big surprise.

Oh, this makes me want to weep! Those are on my list of 'Things I wish I could see one day, but probably won't.'

How can we have a world without these beautiful icons? It's simply unimaginable!

The two 6th century monumental statues of a standing Buddha had been carved into the side of a cliff in the Bamyan valley in the Hazarajat region of central Afghanistan. Even if done today, with our laser levels, pneumatic tools, and lifting equipment, the creation of these statues was no mean accomplishment. But these, these magnificent artifacts, were done 1500 years ago.

In short order Muslims destroyed them in March 2001 using weapons of war. Thus, works of art that no Islamic society could ever, ever create (you've heard of a Muslim Beethoven perhaps?) were blown to smithereens with equipment that no Islamic society could ever, ever invent (you've seen Muslim-crafted spaceships perhaps?).

Now these statues, sited in obscure Afghanistan, were not well known to the public at large. But the pyramids, the Shpnix? These are well within the purview of even the dullest-minded public school union-controlled teacher; knowledge of these fantastic creations have seeped out (damn you, Mark Twain and Agatha Christie), even if they are not as beautiful today as they once were upon their original completion (having suffered Muslim vandalism in the past).

Destroying these? Now there's a public relations task that might even knock off Don Draper.

Muslims should address their own blatant idolatry before they concern themselves with archeological remnants of past civilizations. Muslims around the world pray toward the Black Stone in the Kaaba. When performing the hajj pilgrimage they must touch or kiss the Black Stone 21 times. By any definition of the word, that is idolatry. The Pyramids and the Sphinx are merely artifacts of an ancient culture which have priceless historical value but serve no religious purpose today. By contrast, the Black Stone is an idol worshipped by over a billion people daily. Muslims should destroy that idol to show their true devotion to God and only God.

Nothing could possible demonstrate more perfectly the savage and destructive core of Islam that must totally erase every trace of a subject people's cultural identity and replace it with insect-like mental regimentation. For Egypt to destroy the labor of ages, the crown glory of its ancestors, simply because it was created before Islam conquered the minds of Egyptians... That this was even suggested in seriousness says all that can be said about Islam and its ultimate aims. Imagine a world without art, music; the soaring esthetic creations of humanity's greatest intellects reduced to ashes and rubble. That is Islam.

We can't stop them from destroying their own history. But we can point at the hateful folly that they use as an excuse for a "religion of peace".

And when school children learn of the antiquities of ancient Egypt, make sure they learn what became of those irreplaceable artifacts. Yes, we learn of many things that Islamic society conveyed to those who started the Renaissance. But we never learn of the burning of the library of Alexandria.

And while they're at it, why not blow up the Aswan dam. It was built by the Kuffar.

Well we knew that was coming...It may be harder to destroy the pyramids than they think...Maybe they will uncover the space ship rumored to be buried under it...

For the benefit of DDA, Graven Image I will re-post this with out the sarcasm,

The massive creature gazes with large and almost scary eyes eastward toward the equinox. While the face is intact, the nose is missing. A large gash across the face appears to have been caused by an explosive device, possibly a shell, that removed the nose. Was that an accidental strike, or was it done on purpose? :Louis Farrakhan once said he believed the damage had racial undertones, and that the nose was blown away by whites who were angry that the nose of the Sphinx was Negroid.
Napolean has been blamed, as have British and German forces during the great wars, although there is no record of this being true.

Yet historical record notes that both Arab conquerors and Sa'im al-dahr damaged the Sphinx. Writings of Sa'im al-dahr specifically mention the nose.

The one-meter-wide nose on the face is missing. Examination of the Sphinx's face shows that long rods or chisels were hammered into the nose, one down from the bridge and one beneath the nostril, then used to pry the nose off towards the south.

The Egyptian Arab historian al-Maqrīzī, writing in the 15th century AD, attributes the loss of the nose to iconoclasm by Muhammad Sa'im al-Dahr, a Sufi Muslim from the khanqah of Sa'id al-Su'ada. In AD 1378, upon finding the Egyptian peasants making offerings to the Sphinx in the hope of increasing their harvest, Sa'im al-Dahr was so outraged that he destroyed the nose, and was hanged for vandalism. Al-Maqrīzī describes the Sphinx as the "talisman of the Nile" on which the locals believed the flood cycle depended.

It will be spectacular and exemplary Islamic Democracy. Raze the tourist income flat to the ground. Destroy all the highrises and asphalt road, and return to nomadic like.

I do want to see all Muslim countries return to its natural state as before the civilization.

Just in case you haven't been paying attention and think humankind is not too stupid to survive as Earth's nascent species, kindly reread the above article.

“So who are you to do it?” he wondered. “The Prophet destroyed the idols because people worshiped them, but the Sphinx and the Pyramids are not worshiped.”

Oh ...only idols that are worshiped are to be destroyed. Wow, this is very reassuring to those religions who do have statues and pictures of their holiest of holies. Rather a lot, come to think of it. But Islam so orders it and so it must be. Gotcha. And to believe otherwise is probably some kind of hatemongering islamophobic bigotry.
The Ennahda party are said to be some kind of moderates, right?

They won't find the treasure, that has already been taken, and much of it can now be found in British museums.

Personally I do not think they will destroy then, but rename them with islam name, like they did here.

Abu Simbel (Arabic أبو سنبل or أبو سمبل) an archaeological site comprising two massive rock temples in southern Egypt on the western bank of Lake Nasser about 290 km southwest of Aswan. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the "Nubian Monuments", which run from Abu Simbel downriver to Philae (near Aswan).

The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II in the 13th century BC, as a lasting monument to himself and his queen Nefertari, to commemorate his alleged victory at the Battle of Kadesh, and to intimidate his Nubian neighbors. However, the complex was relocated in its entirety in the 1960s, on an artificial hill made from a domed structure, high above the Aswan dam reservoir.

The relocation of the temples was necessary to avoid their being submerged during the creation of Lake Nasser, the massive artificial water reservoir formed after the building of the Aswan dam on the Nile River.

This temple was constructed nearly 2000 years before Islam ever existed, yet the cannot call it the Temple of Ramesses 11

Construction of the temple complex started in approximately 1284 BC and lasted for circa 20 years, until 1264 BC. Known as the "Temple of Ramses, beloved by Amun", it was one of six rock temples erected in Nubia during the long reign of Ramses II. Their purpose was to impress Egypt's southern neighbours, and also to reinforce the status of Egyptian religion in the region, and it was not Islam

With the passage of time, the temples fell into disuse and eventually became covered by sand. Already in the 6th century BC, the sand covered the statues of the main temple up to their knees. The temple was forgotten until 1813, when Swiss orientalist JL Burckhardt found the top frieze of the main temple. Burckhardt talked about his discovery with Italian explorer Giovanni Belzoni, who travelled to the site, but was unable to dig out an entry to the temple. Belzoni returned in 1817, this time succeeding in his attempt to enter the complex. He took everything valuable and portable with him. Tour guides at the site relate the legend that "Abu Simbel" was a young local boy who guided these early re-discoverers to the site of the buried temple which he had seen from time to time in the shifting sands. Eventually, they named the complex after him:

Abu Simbel.

Today, thousands of tourists visit the temples daily. Guarded convoys of buses and cars depart twice a day from Aswan, the nearest city. The convoys are guarded because moslems in the area have a nasty habit of murdering tourists who wish too see this non islamic wonder

Al-Gohary...called on Muslims to remove such “idols.”

Good idea, it will keep them busy for a while...

“God ordered Prophet Mohammed to destroy idols”

Mohammed showed no respect for other people's religions when he smashed idols in Mecca. Why should anyone respect Islam?

Dear Jihad Watch readers:

The destruction of those magnificent towering Buddha statues had at least a few in the pro-Islamic media horrified. However, in the years since their destruction... the more dhimmified the media has become. So much that when the historic shrines of Muslim saints from an offshoot Islamic sect were destroyed in Mali earlier this year... basically no one noticed.

Any time construction workers (almost always NON-MUSLIMS brought in from other nations)in Muslim lands come across pre-Islam archaeological sites, artifacts, etc... they are instructed to destroy them. When Islamists invaded Mali, Darfur and other African states... jewelery items, amulets, etc- representing different tribal cultures and animist beliefs... were ripped off the bodies of the owners.

Recently in Israel, muslims have ripped up timbers from an ancient Jewish temple and destroyed them.

Islamists in Europehave tried (so far unsuccesfully... once again "only so far") to remove, cover up or alter works of art from the medieval era and renaissance that have depicted Islamists in ways found offensive by Muslims. Did these Islamic Imbeciles really expected Christian artists who when learning of the blood lust of the Muslims during the Crusades to actually create paintings and art work praising "Allah", I mean PULLLEEEZZZEEE you stupid Islamic- #@*$"?## get a clue.

Why al these references to OTHER works of art, archaeological sites and even small objecs (amulets, etc) of non-Islam origin? Well, the Islamists if not successful in destroying all of the above... are hellbent on doing so. Don't think that global treasures like the Sphinx and Pyramids can be immune.

The muslims do this to re-write history and to re-enforce a belief that any time period before Islam arrived was inherently inferior.
If you don't destroy historic cathedrals, synagogues, shrines and temples... then take over those former places of Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Sihk and Hindu worship.... and tell Muslim children these buildings have always been Islamic.

Attempt to alter paintings which depict the truth about Islamic barbarism in the Crusades. Obliterate shrines of saints... to get rid of proof that another sect or Islam existed in a land before your own Muslim denomination arrived.

...and so it goes. On a similar note of re-writing history; as an American Indian I have had way too many discussions with muslims who believe that they- muslims are the "indigenous peoples" of America. Strange. I have friends who are Pawnee, Miami, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Sac & Fox, etc, etc... who would argue that point.

My gut reaction is the days of these ancient treasures, the Sphinx and Pyramids are numbered. Oh, and the reference in the article about the Sphinx... muslims centuries ago defaced the Sphinx and destroyed the nose.

Blangwort wrote:

With respect, Blangwort, this is *not* "their own history". The Bedouin Muslim hordes who swept out of Arabia and invaded Egypt in 639 AD had *no* links to the great civilization of Pharaonic Egypt whatsoever.

It is the oppressed Copts who are the native Egyptian remnant surviving there.

Moreover, I consider the monuments and artifacts of Ancient Egypt to be part of mankind's heritage—not merely Egypt's.

After all, the overwhelming majority of Muslim Egyptians have—at best—cared little for their country's rich archeological heritage.

Virtually all of the serious archeology and curating of ancient Egyptian work—as well as almost all of the popular interest in it—have come from Infidels, and not from Egyptians themselves.

Excellent post, Arjay.

Arjay

be sure to spread the news among all your First Nations contacts, that the sharia of Islam forbids sculpture/ carving and visual representations of living beings (human, animal or mythical).

Make sure they know that the Mohammedans who destroyed the Bamiyan Buddhas, and destroyed *thousands* of art-and-sculpture-rich Hindu temples in India, and are now threatening to destroy the Sphinx (and presumably other pre-Islamic Egyptian works of art) would do exactly the same to things like *this*:

And what would Muslims do to these haunting, ancient paintings and rock engravings?

I agree with the extremeist muslims, there needs to be a clensing, and we should help all those who want to see ahla...to do just that! It should start with the turning of two keys at the same time...and literally end with a blast!!! (GOT NUKES?????)as all those who spread hate throught the world we live in. Seem to hate it so much, then lets help them get out of the cazy place!!!!!

I say may they have their forty virgins, and may they all be ugly, hairy, toothless, bacon eating bitches!!!!

Dear Jihad Watch readers:

Shout outs to the following... Gravenimage, for pointing out that the Arabic-Islamic destroyers had nothing to do with the Egypt of the Pharoahs...

Dumblesdorearmy for some amazing museum links...

Gunung Semeru, I didn't know about the "renaming of those antiquities" and for reminding all of us that Islamic murderers are always trying to target tourists who visit historic sites...

and the posts from other JW readers were great too, especially the quote about insect-like mental regimentation.

Awesome guys and gals!

If this piece of pig shit gets to demolish the pyramids, then we should get to demolish the Kaaba stone in Mecca, IN ALL FAIRNESS.

You know who wanted to destroy the Black Rock?

Gustave Flaubert, he who is most famous for having written Madame Bovary.

Here's the quote, in the original French, as presented by 'Hugh Fitzgerald', formerly a most energetic contributor to this forum.

More Mots Justes From Flaubert

"Je demande, au nom de l'humanité, à ce qu'on broie la Pierre-Noire, pour en jeter les cendres au vent, à ce qu'on détruise La Mecque, et que l'on souille la tombe de Mahomet. Ce serait le moyen de démoraliser le Fanatisme."

(Gustave Flaubert / 1821-1880 / Lettre à Madame Roger des Genettes / 12 ou 19 janvier 1878)

'I demand, in the name of Humanity, that someone should burn the Black Stone so as to fling its ashes to the winds, that someone destroy Mecca, and that someone obliterate the tomb of Mohammed. That would be the way to demoralise Fanaticism".

"The Egyptian Arab historian al-Maqrīzī, writing in the 15th century AD, attributes the loss of the nose to iconoclasm by Muhammad Sa'im al-Dahr, a Sufi Muslim ..."

That iconoclasm is a solidly mainstream tenet of ordinary Islam; not the crotchet of some egregiously fanatical Sultan or Sheikh or whatever.

It is nice to have one more datum (out of hundreds that could be cited) to demonstrate that a Sufi Muslim manifested fanaticism, rather than harmless new-agey mysticism as people continue to think (even, for example, Prof. Frizt Wagner, emeritus professor of philosophy from LSU, a conservative and not a Leftist by any stretch of the imagination, swallows this tripe, among many others concerning Islam).

I know I've mentioned this before, but my mother-in-law is a docent at a prominent collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts here in the United States.

She was peripherally involved with the discovery and repatriation of the mummy of Ramses I to Egypt. She was thrilled to meet the charming Zahi Hawass, who would soon become the Egyptian Minister of State for Antiquities Affairs.

Of course, that was a few years ago.

I was rather leery of the whole thing at the time, and now repatriations like this one have never looked more foolish.

Zahi Hawass is history, and there has been, from everything I have been able to ascertain, no new appointee to the position—nor do I expect there to be one under the Muslim Brotherhood.
...

Here's Raymond Ibrahim with the Front Page Magazine's coverage of the ridiculous Huffington Post dismissing the threat to Egypt's pyramids as a "hoax".

http://frontpagemag.com/2012/raymond-ibrahim/huffington-post-msm-facilitate-destruction-of-egypt%E2%80%99s-pyramids/

In the comments, you can find my exchange with notorious Muslim troll "Mensch Keymelon", where he openly calls for the destruction of Egypt's ancient heritage. He wants to see the great pyramid razed to the ground, because they are a "symbol of idol worship"—and a giant mega-Mosque erected on the site using the pyramid's stones as building materials. Typical Muslim destructiveness and supremacism.

He also crows over the Taliban's destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas, and sets his sights on the treasures of the West, as well.

I suspect this is far more common in Muslim countries than we think.

In an essay on my blog, I noted a curious detail about archeology in Turkey.

It began with my reading a recent news story about the discovery in Turkey of a couple of ancient statues of life-sized lions, dating back to the Hittite Empire (approximately the 2nd millennium B.C.).

The news report tells us:

The story of the discovery of the massive lions began in 2001...

The Karakiz lion was found dynamited in two, likely in the mistaken belief that it contained hidden treasure.

As I wrote on my blog:

["likely" means you don't know, you're just guessing this must be the motive -- I mean in a country full of Muslims, there couldn't possibly be another motive for destroying the artifacts of another culture, right...?]

The news story continued:

"There's this belief that monuments like this contain treasure," said Summers, explaining that the dynamiting of monuments is a problem in Turkey. "It makes the Turkish newspapers every month or so."

BOING!!!!

There's that buried remark in a buried paragraph of a story about a Muslim country (indeed, a "modern moderate" Muslim country like Turkey), revealing some maggots under the rock we happened, by pure change, to overturn. Of course the archeologists and the reporter assume, without giving any evidence, that it must be purely for motives of theft.

The news story goes on:

The second lion, found to the northeast of the village, had also been split in two. As a result of this destruction both lion sculptures, which originally were paired with another, now mainly have one lion intact. The danger of new looting loomed over the researchers while they went about their work.

"Looting"? Or something more... Islamic?

In the summer of 2008 evidence of "fresh treasure hunting" was found at the ancient quarry along with damage to a drum-shaped rock that, in antiquity, was in the process of being carved.

"Treasure hunting"? Or "Jahilliya vandalism"?

I choose door (or should I say, bronze portal) #2.

LemonLime wrote:

.................................

*Very* important points, LemonLime.

The attack on the museum in Cairo, where display cases were smashed open and two mummies were *beheaded*, was described as "looting".

There was even some completely spurious speculation that the looting was due to Egyptians' fear of destitution because of the revolution, with the implication that the poor dears had to loot the museum due to the impending starvation of their families.

But when museum staff were able to venture back into the galleries, they discovered something strange—while there was enormous destruction, *nothing was actually missing*.

This, when mentioned at all, was chalked up to general confusion. But you'd think even the most inept and undiscerning looter would be able to make off with an armful of stuff.

I am *no* fan of looting—especially of art and antiquities. The chance of loss, damage and even destruction of the work is very high.

But give me an "honest" looter any day—even if they understand nothing specific about the work or the care it needs, they know it is valuable, and they have a vested interest in getting the objects into the hands of buyers in a more or less intact condition.

Not so the destroyers of "Jahillya".

I believe this *is* what we're seeing—in Egypt, in Turkey, in Iraq, in Mali, in the Maldives, and all over Dsr-al-Islam with the further rabid Islamization of the Muslim world.

Yes indeed, gravenimage. Characterizing such spoliation as "looting" is analogous to thinking of jihad(ism) as in the "criminal" category -- even "terrorist" seems inadequate, as it too often lends itself to be largely (mis)understood in the old fashioned guerilla sense, with the ever-lurking tendency by PC MC Westerners to see them as "freedom fighters" fighting "tyrants" (ultimately "propped up" by the evil us -- i.e., U.S.).

Pyramids are a reminder of when 'Abids' weren't 'Abids' and had a civilization as great if not greater than the Greeks and Romans.

...'Abids' and had a civilization as great if not greater than the Greeks and Romans.

Is "Abid" an Arabic word?

At any rate, let's not get carried away. Egypt had a great civilization, to be sure; but the Greeks and Romans, though they were "young" (as Plato said), came along to become "old" and wise themselves, in their turn. That's true history. Muslims don't belong to the history of Mankind. They are renegade scoundrels, criminals, rapists, dogs, vermin, insects (I'd add more, but my Roget's Thesaurus is currently off-line...).
