Robert Spencer: Russell Brand and the Degeneration of the Public Discourse

In the American Thinker this morning I discuss what passes for debate and reasoned discussion on the Left and in the Left-dominated mainstream media:

President Obama's reelection was the result of forty years of work and more, as the hard Left took control not only of the government, but of the media, the educational system, and the entertainment industry. No one has been willing to admit it, or has much noticed, but we live now in essentially a one-party state, in which the loyal opposition hastens to assure the public that its positions are based on the same core philosophy as that of the majority, but it just has a cleverer or more effective or cheaper way of implementing the majority's will. Those who dare go so far as to question that core philosophy are immediately subjected to opprobrium designed to brand them as Enemies of the People, shunned as quickly and viciously as were the victims of Stalin's show trials.

And so it was that my colleague Pamela Geller appeared recently on Russell Brand's BrandX, in an appearance that clearly Brand, who is apparently a fashionable personality of some note, had designed to use as a teaching moment, so as to warn his dimwitted followers that they must not resist the global jihad and Islamic supremacism, on pain of being read out of polite company and subjected to the ridicule and derision to which he subjected Geller.

To be sure, ridicule is a prescribed Alinskyite tactic for dealing with ideological enemies, but it is more than that as well: it is a confession of intellectual bankruptcy. Brand had Geller on not to discuss issues with her, or to hear her out at all. He would not have a fair and open discussion with her because he could not do so; after all, he is an actor, a professional liar, and she tells the unvarnished and unwelcome truth. But even had he been as informed and committed as anyone on the Left, he could not refute her, since the facts are on her side. So her ideological deviancy, her straying from the straight path, had to be exposed in other ways.

Brand chose to illustrate Geller's heresy by planting a Muslim heckler in the audience with a printed sign reading, "Pamela's Racism KILLS" (what race is jihad terror and Islamic supremacism again)? He lauded the heckler and even brought him up onto the stage, while agitatedly ordering that a microphone be moved away from a woman in the audience who stood up to defend Geller. Then Brand's producer, Charles Davis, published a piece that supposedly showed how Geller, when she was allowed to speak on the show at all, had contradicted positions she had taken at her blog, AtlasShrugs.com. Davis could only establish this, of course, by willfully misreading and misrepresenting what Geller actually said, but, as in the old Soviet Union, ideological deviants are not to be accorded any greater courtesy than that in any case.

Geller fought back valiantly, challenging Brand to debate the issues rationally, explaining her positions, and responding to even the most vicious and unfair of Brand's (and the Muslim heckler's) assertions. But one gets no hint of this from the video that aired -- virtually everything that she said ended up on the cutting-room floor. If Brand had any integrity (ah, but there I am already setting the bar too high), he would release the full video of the Geller interview. But it is extremely unlikely that he will do that, as it would not serve his ideological purpose....

There is more.

Another big bucket of garbage from the American Stinker.

When descending into the pit of evil to preach to the demons, hire Ryback to go with you...
Brand would melt...

From the article: "He lauded the heckler and even brought him up onto the stage, while agitatedly ordering that a microphone be moved away from a woman in the audience who stood up to defend Geller."

Recommendation: A future interviewee such as Pamela or Robert could beforehand assign at least two (to achieve redundancy and geographical variation) friendly people in the audience to arrive with folded large-format signs stating in bold print,
"I wish to speak in support of Pamela. Please allow me to do so."
The moderator might choose to completely disregard the person sitting/standing and holding the sign, but the sign would be a calm, peaceful, non-disruptive way to state one's wish for fairness.

Recommendation: A future interviewee such as Pamela or Robert could beforehand assign at least two (to achieve redundancy and geographical variation) friendly people in the audience to each personally record the entire audio from the show using a quality, handheld, digital voice-recorder. Then the audio could afterward be compared against the edited, broadcasted audio and the audio gaps authoritatively explained in a follow-up article written by the interviewee. The interviewee could even publish her or his own, complete audio transcript in a followup article. If the legal, copyright rules of the show did not allow members of the audience to make personal audio recordings, then the interviewee herself or himself could carry a quality, handheld, digital voice-recorder onto the stage to ensure that all audio is captured for subsequent direct comparison with the edited, aired audio. Anyone who is being interviewed should have the legal right to record his or her own audio using his or her own personal voice recorder.

"When descending into the pit of evil to preach to the demons..."

Preaching to the demons? Funny, but..

He (the Holy Prophet) said: There came to me an inviter on behalf of the Jinn (demons) and I went along with him and recited to them the Qur'an. (Sahih Muslim 4.903)

''Not only is Russell Brand vile, he is a bloody idiot. How long would a foul-mouthed dhimmi comic last in a Shari'ah state?''

Precisely. But all part of the cognitive dissonance of the left.

Pamela Geller is courageous, and full of integrity, but if she ever agrees to appear with any more leftist morons like Brand, I hope she **records the proceedings herself**.

And wouldn't it be nice to dump him into the middle of Somalia, and tell him to produce a one-man show ...

Now it comes back to me

This is how truly sick he and the left are in Britain

One day Gritty asked me once if he could bring Edwin, his eight-year-old son, into MTV (studio) to have a bit of a look round. I said, "Sure, why not?" What could possibly go wrong? We could call it Bring Your Drug Dealer to Work Day.

The date that the inaugural BYDDTWD happened to fall upon was September 12 2001, the day after the destruction of the World Trade Centre. With typical restraint, I decided to go into work dressed in a camouflage flak jacket, a false beard and a tea towel on my head, held in place by a shoelace.

I had been aware of Osama bin Laden for about a year. He wasn't someone people of my age group generally knew about, but he'd been involved with some other bombings and he was top of the FBI's most wanted list, and I was fascinated by that sort of stuff. That day, I was going to present this programme called Select, where kids phoned in and chose videos for us to play, and pop stars would come on to flog their records. Our guest was to be Kylie Minogue. Me, Gritty and Edwin went into the toilet and the two older members of our party smoked some crack. Edwin didn't have any. He was just a little boy, and seemed quite upbeat about life anyway. Children don't need drugs, because they have sweets.

We blearily swaggered out of the disabled toilet. On the other side of the foyer - with its round console, banks of TVs, trendy turnstile and endless parade of beautiful young people of both genders and every sexual persuasion trundling in and out - I saw Kylie Minogue, all famous and everything.

Somewhere in my mind, the artist within me - the situationist within me - thought: "I can create a moment here. When am I ever going to get an opportunity like this again?" Before I knew it, I'd walked across that foyer, made a kind of "Woo-ooh" noise - in a mum-across-a-neighbour's-fence sort of way - and said: "Kylie, meet Gritty." Then I just stood back to watch it unfold.

What were these two going to talk about? It's the day after 9/11, and Kylie and Gritty are having a sort of awkward chat, with Gritty trying to be polite and Kylie asking, "What do you do?" sort of like the Queen would. And there's me standing beside them, still dressed as Osama bin Laden.

I thought: "It don't get any better than this."

Russell, if you should happen to wander in here and read some of these comments; listen up:

I know you are not a moron; I heard you give evidence to a parliamentary committee. You were witty, acute, eloquent and sincere. Intelligent to boot.

Consider this though: Robert, Pamela and many other good people are daily enduring death threats from members of the 'religion of peace'.

Your stunt on the show plays into the hands of people who really do 'kill people'.

We are targetting (metaphorically) an ideology of totalitarian designs with a violent enforcement system.

Would you tolerate an ideology called 'the religion of re-jackbooted fascist lies and massacre of Jews'? If you knew that that is what Islam really is? Of course not.

So why be fooled? Find out for yourself what the real story is. Robert and Pamela can explain it all better than I can. So ask them; or read their books, and learn to recognize the slurs against them for the lies that they are.

Please read the sira by Ibn Ishaq if you want to know more. Of course Pamela makes no sense until you learn more. Give her a chance to speak on the record. She is actually a good person who helps a lot of people. Including children of muslim families who are in fear for their lives. Why? Because of Islam.

What kind of organization kills its members for becoming 'ex' members?

Get her back on the show and do it right this time.

Not scared are you?

''I know you are not a moron; I heard you give evidence to a parliamentary committee. You were witty, acute, eloquent and sincere. Intelligent to boot.''

Really ? What was he giving evidence about ?

This is the same bloke who left messages on Andrew Sachs answering machine, about how, he, Brand, had fu**** Sach's granddaughter ?

Classy.

Hi Jan,
Brand was giving evidence to a Parliamentary Committee on the subject of addiction. As a celebrity ex-heroin addict, he was called to explain his ideas on rehab and prevention for other addicts, based on his own experiences:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_LHuII-jYQ

The chairman is the familiar Keith 'Oily' Vaz.

Yes it's the same bloke who left obscene messages on Sachs' answering machine.

You'll notice if you watch the clip that Brand is quite an effective performer as an advocate for a cause that he feels strongly about; despite his many faults.

It may be a long shot that he might ever join the anti-jihad movement, but who knows?
His conduct towards Ms Geller was I'm sure, an expression of his ignorance and false impressions of the nature of Islam. If he were to learn some of the truth, as we know it, he could become an asset for our endeavours to raise more public knowledge and awareness of the true islam and jihad.

A bit like Eric Allen Bell.

Unlikely but not impossible.

Remember, the moronic character he assumes on Brandx is an act. The Brand who gives speeches to the British Parliamentary Commission is another side of the bloke.

Classy?

Not really, but he could be.

Good post, Steve.

I never would have guessed, for instance, that the flippant Dennis Miller would become a fairly knowledgeable Anti-Jihadist, but so he has.

Of course, I imagine Russell Brand would be a *much* tougher sell given his history, but you never know...

Actually, I just watched some of "Brand X", and am reminded that comparing the immature, crude, and idiotic Russell Brand to the smart and funny Dennis Miller is a serious insult to the latter.

Just because they're both comedians doesn't mean they are of a piece...

Hi Gravenimage,

I was interested to learn that about Dennis Miller. I didn't know.

Of course, we are going to need many more like him in order to make a difference.

I think you nailed it when you mentioned maturity. Leftists and their causes are more attractive to the young. Maybe we should look to people like Billy Connolly or Joan Rivers. We know Jackie Mason is wise. What about Woody Allen?

Humour is a great way to get through to people. Did anyone see Eric Idle on Brandx? if so did he venture a comment on Islam or Pamela Geller?

Hi Steve. I don't want to overstate Dennis Miller's knowledge about Islam—for instance, I doubt he has read the Qur'an.

But he regularly and consistently condemns violent Jihad terrorism, and makes *no* excuses for its perpetrators—and he manages to be very funny while doing it, without making light of the threat in the process. He also seems to understand that violent Jihad is a phenomenon that goes way beyond 9/11.

This is more than the average American does, and *way* more than most actors and comedians would ever do.

In fact, if most Westerners were as savvy as Dennis Miller is, Robert Spencer and other Anti-Jihadists trying to educate the public would have a much easier job.

Dennis Miller covers issues of Jihad terrorism pretty often on both his radio show and on his appearances on the semi-Islamo-savvy Bill O'Reilly Show on FOX News. He has a regular appearance on O'Reilly's Wednesday show.

More:

............................

I'm not sure, Steve. I don't watch Brand X regularly—mostly just if my husband and I are flipping around and run across the show featuring a guest we are interested in.

For instance, I missed the Pamela Geller segment entirely.

I'd *love* to see more actors and comedians wake up to the Jihad threat—it certainly directly threatens them—but I fear most are too mired in "political correctness" to take a hard look at Jihad and Shari'ah.

And I very much agree with you about humor. Americans faced the threat of Fascism seriously, but this still left room for Spike Jones' "Der Fuehrer's Face" and Bugs Bunny facing off against Tojo. Good stuff.
