China: Three Muslims sentenced to death for misunderstanding Islam, trying to hijack and blow up plane

The high cost of misunderstanding Islam affects even Muslims in China. Yet still no Muslim groups anywhere devote even a single program to try to prevent young Muslims from misunderstanding their peaceful religion. Now, why is that?

"Death for three Xinjiang plane hijackers: China media," by Neil Connor for AFP, December 11:

A court in China's restive Muslim-majority region of Xinjiang sentenced three men to death on Tuesday after they were found guilty of trying to hijack an aircraft and detonate explosives, state media said.

The men, along with a fourth who received a life prison term, were among a group of six that tried to seize the aircraft after it had taken off from Hotan in the northwestern region and were thwarted by passengers and crew, the official Xinhua news agency said, citing a court statement.

The other two gang members died in the struggle, which also resulted in injuries to 24 crew members and passengers, the statement said.

They were confronted after they tried to "detonate explosive devices", the statement from the Intermediate People's Court in Hotan Prefecture said, adding that "converted metal crutches and explosives" were used in the hijacking.

The men attempted to commandeer the Tianjin Airlines flight 1,400km away from its destination, the regional capital city of Urumqi.

They were influenced by religious extremists and "loudly shouted religious extremist cries" on board the aircraft, the Xinhua report said, citing court testimonies.

Zowie! Which religion, Xinhua? Were these Buddhist extremists again?

"They decided to blow up the aircraft and die along with all the other passengers," it added.

Ringleaders Musa Yvsup and Arxidikali Yimin, along with Eyumer Yimin, who played a major part in the attempted hijack, were sentenced to death.

Alem Musa received a life sentence as he played a minor role in the incident and showed "a good attitude" after being arrested, according to the statement.

"All the defendants confessed the above crimes at the court," the report added.

In China Islamic supremacists play the victimhood card, too:

However, Dilxat Raxit, a spokesman for the exiled World Uyghur Congress, disputed the official version of events, claiming that a fight over seating broke out on board the aircraft between a group of Uighurs and Han Chinese, the country's majority ethnic group.

"The men who were sentenced were not allowed their own lawyers, only those that were given to them by the government," he said.

"The Xinjiang people believe this has been arranged for the Chinese authorities' political purposes. They could use this to step up suppression of the Uighur people. We believe the whole thing has no transparency."

Xinjiang is home to around nine million Uighurs, many of whom complain of religious and cultural repression by Chinese authorities -- a claim the government denies.

The vast resource-rich region, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, has been under heavy security since July 2009, when bloody ethnic riots in Urumqi killed 197 people and injured around 1,700.

Rights groups say the violence in the region stems from long-held grievances among Uighurs, who complain that an influx of Han is eroding their culture.

Beijing says it has provided much-needed development in the region, and blames much of the violence there on what it calls the three "evil forces" of religious extremism, separatism and terrorism.

The attempted hijack resulted in an 'economic loss' of 28.58 million yuan (4.58 million U.S. dollars), the court statement said.

Such incidents on Chinese planes are rare, although in October a man was arrested for allegedly making a hoax threat that forced a plane into an emergency landing, state media said.

The China Southern Airlines flight had originally taken off from Istanbul in Turkey and landed in Urumqi. It was en route for Beijing when the alert happened.

Last year a plane bound for Urumqi was forced into an emergency landing after a passenger claimed there was a bomb on board.

Police detained the 27-year-old woman passenger after she threatened to detonate explosives during the China United Airlines flight from Beijing to Urumqi.

The terrorists' lawyers are trying to pull the wool over our eyes. Not all Uighurs are Muslim, and Christian Uighurs find themselves effectively discriminated against because their Muslim counterparts shout the loudest and get the best treatment. Perhaps the Chinese legal system is now seeing the error of its ways, and that sometimes it's entirely appropriate to fight fire with fire.

Islamists respond to force. Dialougue is out of the question.

Well, I hold no candle for Islam, but the Chinese government's take on things is always suspect to me. One of the ugly things I've noticed about Sinitic Asia (even if I am a Sinophile) is that the minority and those outside the Han circle, whether Muslim or not, are always in the wrong.

From the article: "China's restive Muslim-majority region of Xinjiang"..

Ah, yes. Isn't it peculiar how, world-wide, majority neighbourhoods, suburbs, districts, provinces, regions and nations tend to be 'restive'.

Or, 'troubled'. Or, 'volatile'. Or, 'turbulent'. Or 'flashpoint'. Etc etc etc.

The banlieues of Paris and other big French towns.

Malmo and Rosengard suburbs in Scandinavia.

Islamised areas of London and the North Midlands of the UK...

Sydney's western suburbs, heavily Islamised, with drive-by shootings and so much organised crime indulged in by the Mohammedan 'community' that we've had to create 'the Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad'.

Southern Russia.

Southern Thailand.

Arakan, in western Burma/ Myanmar.

Southern Philippines.

Kashmir, and West Bengal.

Northern Nigeria.

*Within* Muslim countries, the most heavily and zealously Islamic areas - e.g. Aceh in Indonesia, and the North-West Provinces (Swat Valley) of Pakistan.

Got Muslims? You got ...Jihad.

We'll know we're getting somewhere when, instead of reading "[Country X's' restive Muslim-majority [suburb/town or city/ region/ state/ province of X], we read '[X's] **jihad-wracked** Muslim-majority [suburb/ town or city/ district/ region/ state/ province of X]."

Uncle Kepha.

Here's a hypothetical. In fact, two hypotheticals.

Suppose that the Chinese in Xinjiang/ Sinkiang, and in other regions largely inhabited by Muslims, changed their behaviour.

Suppose they started treating the Muslim Uighur, and other Muslim minorities, with exactly the same degree of scrupulous restraint, and respect for religious and civil and personal liberties, as Israel employs toward the Arab Muslims who live within Israel proper.

Do you think that the Uighur Muslims would wage more or less jihad, with more or less vigour, against the non-Muslims in Sinkiang (and elsewhere in China)? Do you think that the Uighur Muslim complaints about 'discrimination' and 'oppression' and demands for special consideration, and for more and greater autonomy, would cease, or grow even louder?

Further: suppose the Chinese (which they won't, but this is a hypothetical, for purpose of argument) decided to give the Uighur exactly what the Uighur say they want. Suppose the Chinese left Sinkiang, and all non-Muslims went with them, and Sinkiang was cut loose from China, to become an independent Uighur Islamic Republic.

Do you or do you not believe that this would satisfy Uighur Muslims, and bring about a complete cessation of all jihad plots and jihad raids against China and the non-Muslim Chinese? Or would it not, rather, like everywhere else in the world where the Ummah manages to expand its territory, whet rather than sate Muslim appetites?

Would it or would it not be followed - in due time, at whatever moment the Muslims deemed opportune, the *instant* that they thought they could get away with it, by the use of the expanded Ummah turf as a jumping-off point for continuing Jihad against the *rest* of China?

I get your point, DDA, but there's a sense in which Sharki Turkistan is a case of chickens coming home to roost.

Nobody in China's history ever encouraged the building of "minority" consciousness more than the Communists, nobody shouted the anti-colonialist line more loudly than the Communists, and yet they are dismayed that the Uighurs (and Lamaist Tibetans) want out of the "embrace of the Socialist Motherland". Eastern Turkistan, like Tibet, involves a great deal of anti-colonial ethnic nationalism as well.

Further, about Islam in China, where is the separatism in Ningxia, Gansu, and Qinghai, where there is also a large Muslim population--only one that thought it was such a part of the Chinese nation that the Mullah Hu Songshan declared China's resistance to Japan a jihad back in the late 1930's?

Further, places like Arakhan (which once stretched up to the Chittagong Tract in Bangladesh) and Patthani (S. Thailand) represent not only the problems with Islam's view of the world, but the intractability of the non-Western world when it is expected to conform to and institutionalize an alien Westphalian system of boundaries and states. Unlike Western states, which were traditionally defined by boundaries, most of Monsoon Asia's states were defined by core areas and their cultures--the valleys of the Huang, Chang, and Xi Rivers in China; that of the Chao Phraya in Thailand; that of the Irrawady in Burma; the coastal region and Red River Delta of Viet Nam. Places like Arakhan and Patthani were generally left alone, as long as they paid the agreed tribute to the center; while large upland areas basically cultivated the art of going ungoverned. To move away from Eastern Turkistan, even Wei Jingsheng, in his critique of the Communist regime in China, noted the difference between China's traditional relationship with Tibet and the official line that it had "always" been part and parcel of China.

Essentially, the Chinese Communists, in trying to make themselves a good, Westphalian system state with accommodated minorities, ended up being a bad colonial/imperial system in parts of its patrimony.

This being said, rest assured that I hold no candle for Islam per se.
