France: Muslim groups sue magazine over Muhammad cartoons

SpencerSept282012CharlieSavage.jpgNot everyone was offended

The freedom of speech once again under fire from Islamic supremacists. If they win this suit, then Islam would be above criticism in France, and Muslims a protected class who must be sheltered from speech they dislike. A victory for these two Muslim groups, in short, would amount to the establishment of the hegemony of Islam in France. If Muslims or any group is able to sue for damages over things that offend them, and collect, then that group has the power to control the public discourse, and has a license to establish tyrannical rule, for it would be forbidden to challenge them.

"French Muslim groups sue magazine over cartoons," from France 24, December 7:

Two Muslim groups are suing the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo after it published inflammatory cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

In a law suit that will revive the debate between freedom of speech and dangerous provocation, the weekly magazine’s director along with two cartoonists are accused of inciting racial hatred and defamation.

The allegations concern cartoons that caricatured the Prophet, including two drawings which show him naked, published at a time, on September 19, when violent anti-Western protests were flaring across the Muslim world in response to an US anti-Islam amateur film.

“Cartoons stigmatised Islam”

Two organisations - the Algerian Democratic Union for Peace and Progress (RDAP) and the Organisation of Arab Union - are claiming a total of €780,000 in costs and damages, according to AFP.

The organisations say the court action is to “defend and support Islamic and/or Arabic people”.

According to the complainants’, the drawings were “damaging to the honour and reputation of the Prophet Mohammed and the Muslim community”.

“They stigmatised Muslims and provoked hatred,” their lawyer Anthony Bem told AFP, adding that "caricatures does not mean anything goes”.

Bem accused Charlie Hebdo of using the backdrop of Muslim protests against the West to boost its sales.

Thousands of extra copies of the weekly had to be ordered after the publications usual print-run of 75,000 sold out within hours of going on sale.

But Richard Malka, lawyer for Charlie Hebdo, hit back, slamming the “exorbitant” charges.

The “accusations” do not take into account the fact the cartoons were made by a satirical magazine, Malka said.

Once again they are trying to create fear to inhibit the French tradition of satirising religions,” Malka added.

Free speech versus provocation

Charlie Hebdo’s decision to publish the cartoons at the height of anti-West protests across the Muslim world forced the French government to take drastic action to protect the safety of its citizens worldwide.

French embassies and cultural centres were conseqently closed in around 20 Muslim countries.

The publication provoked a heated debate in France with several ministers criticising the magazine’s decision to publish the provocative cartoons, but at the same time making it clear they supported the paper’s right to freedom of speech.

At the time, Charlie Hebdo's editor, Stephane Charbonnier, described those getting irate over the cartoons as "ridiculous clowns" and accused the government of pandering to them by criticising him for being provocative.

September’s publication of the cartoons was not the first time Charlie Hebdo had provoked Muslim ire. In 2011 its offices were firebombed after it published an edition "guest-edited by Mohammed", which the satirical weekly called Sharia Hebdo....

"racial hatred... "---

And what race is islam again?. Oh, the pedohammedan buffoonery. Will it ever end?.

I assume the French Jewish community is now planning to sue Islam for the appalling and deeply insulting way in which they are being insulted on a daily basis?

I'm having the Koran reprinted in The Onion. I'm also working on a board game version with a concept that might work as a TV game show.

Tip:
Always back your anti islamic cartoons with islamic "holy" texts, links and screenshots.

Charlie Hebdo should do a 'run' of suitably illustrated 'famous quotes' about Islam, spoken or written by famous Frenchmen of the past.

Here is Voltaire.

"But that a camel-merchant should stir up insurrection in his village;

"that in league with some miserable followers he persuades them that he talks with the angel Gabriel;

" that he boasts of having been carried to heaven, where he received in part this unintelligible book, each page of which makes common sense shudder;

"that, to pay homage to this book, he delivers his country to iron and flame;

"that he cuts the throats of fathers and kidnaps daughters;

"that he gives to the defeated the choice of his religion or death:

" this is assuredly nothing any man can excuse, at least if he was not born a Turk [sic: or any other kind of Muslim - dda], or if superstition has not extinguished all natural light in him."

-Voltaire, Letter to Frederick II of Prussia, December 1740

And here is Montaigne:

"The Assassins, a people dependent on Phoenicia, are considered among Mohammedans as being of supreme devoutness and purity of morals.

"They hold that the most certain way to deserve Paradise is to kill someone of a different religion."

and:

"When Mohammed promises his followers a paradise tapestried, adorned with gold and precious stones, peopled with wenches of surpassing beauty, with rare wines and foods, I can easily see that they are mockers stooping to our folly to honey us and attract us by these ideas and hopes appropriate to our moral appetites"

Found in Chapters 12 (Apology for Raymond Sebond) and 31 (Of Anger), pp. 384 and 538, in "The Complete Essays of Montaigne" translated by Donald M. Frame, Stanford University Press, 1958.

And here is Montesquieu:

"It is a misfortune for human nature when a religion is granted by a conqueror.

"The Mahometan religion, which refers only to the sword, is more likely to motivate those with the same destructive spirit that founded it."
Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de Montesqieu (1689-1755)

"De l’Esprit de Lois," Chapter IV, p. 403, from "Ouvres Completes de Montesquieu," compiled by J. Ravenal, L. de Bure Libraire, 2002.

(My hearty appreciation to a years-ago jihadwatcher who did some sleuthing in a good University library and tracked down these Quotable Quotes).

And they could cite this passage from Beaumarchais' 1784 stage comedy Marriage of Figaro (adapted by Mozart for the great opera), from the famous Freedom of Speech monologue in Act V, Scene 3:

"I cobble together a verse comedy about the customs of the harem, assuming that, as a Spanish writer, I can say what I like about Mohammed without drawing hostile fire.

"Next thing, some envoy from God knows where turns up and complains that in my play I have offended the Ottoman empire, Persia, a large slice of the Indian peninsula, the whole of Egypt, and the kingdoms of Barca {Ethiopia}, Tripoli, Tunisi, Algeria, and Morocco.

"And so my play sinks without trace, all to placate a bunch of Muslim princes, not one of whom, as far as I know, can read but who beat the living daylights out of us and say we are 'Christian dogs.'

"Since they can't stop a man thinking, they take it out on his hide instead...".

And more no-nonsense Frenchmen of the past, telling it like it is.

Diderot:

"When government is based absolutely [or completely] on religion, such as that of the Mahometans, then its fanaticism is turned outward, and turns these people into the common enemy of mankind."

The Encyclopédie (1751-1772) edited by Denis Diderot (1713-1784) "FANATISME, Page 6:393, Paragraph 42" http://colet.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/getobject_?a.43:84./projects/artflb//databases/artfl/encyclopedie/IMAGE/

"It is true that this book [the Quran - dda] abounds in contradictions, absurdities, and anachronisms, all found in great numbers.

"One sees clearly that there is [in this book] a profound ignorance of the simplest and best-known principles of physics, and that [surely] is the touchstone [for judging] those books which false religions claim have been written by the Divinity, for God is neither absurd nor ignorant, but the vulgar do not recognize these defects, in fact adore them, and the Imams employ torrents of words to cover them up."

The Encyclopédie (1751-1772) edited by Denis Diderot (1713-1784) "MAHOMÉTISME, Page 9:864, Paragraph 15" http://colet.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/getobject_?a.71:57./projects/artflb//databases/artfl/encyclopedie/IMAGE/

And from Gustave Flaubert, in a letter:

"Je demande, au nom de l'humanité, à ce qu'on broie la Pierre-Noire, pour en jeter les cendres au vent, à ce qu'on détruise La Mecque, et que l'on souille la tombe de Mahomet. Ce serait le moyen de démoraliser le Fanatisme."

(Gustave Flaubert / 1821-1880 / Lettre à Madame Roger des Genettes / 12 ou 19 janvier 1878)

The Charlie Hebdo illustrators might have some fun depicting Flaubert's suggestion..

And finally, there is Andre Servier:

“Islam was not a torch, as has been claimed, but an extinguisher.

"Conceived in a barbarous brain for the use of a barbarous people, it was - and it remains - incapable of adapting itself to civilization.

Wherever it has dominated, it has broken the impulse towards progress and checked the evolution of society.”

– Andre Servier, 1922

DDA, I can't help but note that a lot of those enlightened French wits you quote ended up unleashing a pretty pitiless fanaticism on their country when their disciples made their revolution.

Maybe the upshot is that a post-Christian faith tends to be a pretty ugly business?

Kepha

Flaubert and Servier are, of course, from the 19th and from the 20th century respectively, so cannot be blamed for the Revolution which occurred long before they were born.

I have no idea what they thought about Christianity; but even if they got *it* wrong, would you disagree with Servier's assessment of the fruit - or lack thereof - of Islam, or with Flaubert's exasperation - surely shared by many decent men down through the ages who have contemplated the monstrosity that is Islam - and his wish that the vile Black Stone in Arabia (a fetish centre if ever there was one, and I would describe it as a 'spiritual stronghold' of the worst kind) should be ground to powder and scattered to the four winds of heaven?

As for the rest.

I quoted them because what they said about *Islam* did seem to me to be bang on the nail.

Irrespective of anything else he said, Voltaire's summary of Mohammed's career reads like the plot-precis of 'Innocence of Muslims' - which film, despite its complete lack of artistic merit, is strictly based on the Islamic canon.

And would you say Diderot got Islam wrong, when he remarked upon the danger flowing from its refusal to separate religion from politics, or noted the gross ignorance visible in the Koran, and the 'torrents of words' with which Muslim imams cover up the deficiencies of that same Quran? ( 'Torrents of words' is a good way to describe the tactics of the Mohammedan sand-throwers who sometimes visit this very forum)?

A man may be wrong about *one* thing (in this case, Christianity; though so far as I know it's only Diderot and Voltaire who were actively and publicly hostile) and still be right about something else (Islam).

I cited these people because a/ if anyone from Charlie Hebdo happens perchance to lob in here via the magic of google, they may warm to a quotation from Voltaire or Montaigne or Beaumarchais, and b/ because I thought that what they said about *Islam* was, basically, correct.

If this case ever reaches court it should prove interesting if the contents of Quran, Sunnah and Sirah are revealed in court and become common knowledge. It will be difficult in court to do the old AL-insan al-Kamil and Uswa hasana trick. Furthermore, if the truth is revealed in court, there will be rioting in the streets in order to clearly establish Islam is tolerant and the Religion of Peace.

I must include this Quote I came across it sums up the situation in the U.K exactly.

"sadly the British so-called intelligentsia are so fearful of Islam that I am pretty sure that if a Muslim were to look at them, they would wet themselves for fear of being called a racist."

Hey, Robert, you look as great in a T-shirt as you do in business suits :)
