Multiculturalists are supposed to be supportive of music from other lands. In fact, for some time now, all music appreciation courses have required the appreciation of non-Western music.

The death of music was inevitable.

For the WaPo to state the above is surreal and would have been laughed out of the room were it not for the fact that Islam is involved.

It is not surreal that the WaPo would try to pin the blame on the West. For decades now, almost all institutions of higher learning have taught that Western civilization is the root cause of all the world's problems.

The West is destroying itself -- and at a very rapid rate now.

In the Sudanese sufi music tradition, only drums were allowed as background to the singing, which was more like chanting than singing; wouldn't want to upset Allah with too much melody. But as the Sudan opened up to the West and all its temptations, other instruments crept in one by one, and the chanting became more musical, then a few foreign riffs came in - reggae, jazz, etc - until lo, cheerful sufi music took its place in the great African diversity of sound.Pity about the lyrics, of course.

Naturally, the zealots frown. I guess in time it will be a case of "back to the drums".

Let's just repeat that sentence - "one Islamist grabbed the guitar and smashed it to bits".

Now, let's reflect on that Horrible Hadith which Mr Spencer quoted, in his introduction to the article -

to always on watch: about western culture, seen from Indonesia. Western culture is so evil. But what I don't understand why moslems from all over are moving the west... THere to complain. Yusuf Islami came to Indonesia and visited the Salman Mosque in Bandung. There they asked him to tell his story about how he as a Moslem was oppressed in Brittain. He told his story--and when I heard about it it made me mad. I have been in the west and also in Brittain. I didn't hear about and YI couldn't tell how many mosques burnt down, how many imams stabbed, how often a Moslem congregation gathering for prayer is beaten up and dispersed by crowds. On account that they have no permit... Still his listeners where moved to tears by what happened to Moslems in the West. But where come multiculturalism comes from? Or the conviction that refugees should be accepted, housed, fed, given jobs, social security, civil rights? Which is expected, Vietnamese boat people where towed out back to sea by the Malaysians and kept in camps by the Indonesian, on condition that third countries would take them. And some official said you know, they have another culture... But the west has to take them, it is their duty. And if they shirk this duty, they are racist. But what about Moslem refugees? In short, western culture is trying to be Christian without God, because: "God can't be an old authoritarian white male with a beard. Therefore, I do not believe in God!"

At the same time, they have overshot Christ, who was crucified by the Romans, the radical god and Christless Christians of the secular PC west crucify themselves, and they not only forgive their enemies, they invite them to crucify them. They want to be the Lamb of God, and shoulder the sins of mankind. However, they believe that The Other has no sin, they only want to atone for their own sins. And are as fanatical as any Salafi, only, textless. So in their eyes, being balanced is heretical.

Let have an experiment. In one western country, GB for example, do away with western culture, all should convert to Islam. Then let's see whether in ten years, society is able and willing to take in Moslem migrants like what is happening now. THen ask again, where did multiculturalism go, and democracy, and all the other goodies that self loathing westerners think they have to offer the Other to pay for the sin being western.

David, I don't know the answers to your questions. I would just apply my rule of thumb concerning explaining seemingly baffling aspects of Islamic culture. I.e., whenever you see things that seem to show "diversity" and "tolerance" in Islamic culture, first try to figure out an explanation that is unfavorable to Islam. For your questions, Islam probably retained some forms of chanting from pre-Islamic Arabic culture. As you may know, Arabia at the time of the birth of Islam (7th century) had a thriving culture of poets who did public recitals -- all the poetry was oral, and it involved telling stories about society, about politics, and about the gods: i.e., about all of life (and many of the poets were females, who thus played an important role in society -- another black eye for the Islamic apologists who claim that they "raised the status of Arabic women"). I don't know much beyond that, but I'd assume the recitation wasn't just dry monotone, but involved chanting, modulation of notes, etc. Why the Muslims did not utterly reject that, but rather incorporated aspects of it I would chalk up to incoherent self-contradictory hypocrisy -- not to "diversity" and "tolerance" and appreciation for jahilliya.

One is forced to conclude that Michael Jackson now resides in Hell having his skin burned off and drinking molten brass, along with Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Satchmo etc. My, My, Tom Jones, the Rolling stones and all the others must be worried.

And what is interesting is just how few of the commenters (including the minority who are exhibiting a degree of awareness of what Islam is about) are able to face head on, let alone zero in on and discuss, the thing that jumped right out at me when I read the article - the fact that these jihad mobsters in Mali have declared Jihad not only against musicians within Mali, but "against all the musicians of the **world**".

I didn't see any commenter (that is, anyone who had got past the moderators...) citing the Hadiths that condemn music and are the basis of the sharia ban on music.

*Nobody* - not even the most Islamosavvy - was coming right out and saying, 'but perfectly bog-standard ordinary Islam, Islam-by-the-book, forbids music, just as it forbids alcohol and pork, and the persistence of some forms of music in nominally or not-quite-orthodox Muslim societies, is not because of Islam, but *in spite of Islam*, and is therefore always in danger of being pounced upon and repressed, as music in Mali is currently being repressed."
