The report said those killed had previously served sentences for crimes including murder, extortion, theft and robbery.

Aaah, just the kind of 'companions' to hang out with a desert bandit describing himself as a prophet.

I notice that word 'restive' cropping up again, as though it was some geographical description of a region, like arid or mountainous.

Further observations.

From the article - "Rights activists say the insurgency [sic: JIHAD - dda] is also driven by poverty and anger at the heavy-handed tactics of the Russian security forces."

This sort of thing is also said routinely of the Muslim jihad in southern Thailand, and of the Muslim jihad in the southern Philippines.

Mr Spencer has already remarked, appositely, that '"Rights activists" always ascribe jihad activity to the alleged wrongdoing of the non-Muslim party.'

When one encounters the proposition that the heavyhandedness of the Russian (infidels) or of the Thai or Filipino or even for that matter Chinese or Indian (in Kashmir) Infidels, is the 'cause' of the Jihad, one may legitimately engage in a hypothetical.

Suppose that the Russian Federation gave the Muslims what they say they want: turned them loose from the Federation as autonomous Muslim-majority republics.

Would jihad attacks within what remained of Russia cease? Would people in Moscow or on the Moscow-St Petersburg train be any safer?

Would the border between the Russian Federation and these new-born Muslim states settle down to be as boringly peaceful as the border between the US and Canada?

Or, in fact, would not jihad raids and jihad plots resume, sooner or later and probably sooner, waged by Muslims from the Caucasus and also by Muslims still resident within Russia proper? Would not jihad terror raids not continue to be conducted from across the borders of the newly Muslim-controlled 'turf', into the as-yet-unislamised turf of Russia proper?

The partition of India and the carving off of a large chunk of India to form Muslim-dominated Muslim-ruled states for Muslim benefit (and wherein the remnant non-Muslims have been and are being treated like sh*t by the Muslims) did not sate Muslim appetites in the slightest; it did not bring an end to Jihad. The Muslims were not content with Bangladesh and Pakistan; they want nothing less than the whole of India, and they have continued to plot and to plan and to wage jihad - sometimes openly, as in 1971, and sometimes by the transparent use of proxies, such as the Mumbai jihad raid from Pakistan in 2008, which blind freddie could see was in fact an act of war by Muslim Pakistan against India.

And as for the nonsense about the jihad being caused by poverty; no, it is Islam that causes both the poverty *and* the Jihad (and of course Jihad, with its continual agitation and destruction of people and property, *causes* - and *worsens* poverty). Muslim zones within broader entities that are non-Muslim, are *always* poorer than the predominantly non-Muslim zones, because Islam produces poverty more consistently than any other belief system. The suspicion and aggression fostered by Islam reduce people's ability to work together to build and to fix things; while inshallah fatalism and the suppression of thinking and innovation paralyse the will to work and the impetus to create new stuff. Result: crushing, abject POVERTY.

I just looked up my new copy (2010 edition) of my Christian factbook, 'Operation World' to see what it says about Dagestan.

And lo and behold: "Dagestan is more than 90 % Muslim ...It is the poorest republic in the Russian Federation and has 50 % unemployment".

'more than 90 % Muslim' and 'the poorest republic in the RF' are not discrete and unrelated items; the latter condition, rather, is the direct, logical result of the former.

Furthermore, the same sourcebook states, of the 'southern federal district', comprising all the Russian Caucasus republics, that "Islam predominates in all the indigenous peoples except the Ossetians, a majority of whom are nominal Orthodox [it was Ossetian Christians who were the victims at Beslan - dda]' and that 'these regions are not only the least stable but also the poorest, with the highest unemployment and the highest birthrates as well as widespread corruption'.

In other words: bog standard dar al Islam (though I would *bet* my bottom dollar that the one island of Infideldom in this sea of Islam, the republic of North Ossetia-Alania, 2/3 Christian and about 20 % Muslim, is doing rather better than the Islamised republics around it).
