'One of them fired a gun into the air and ordered everyone to stay put in Yawi [a Malay dialect spoken by Muslims in the South] and then asked if there were any Buddhist Thais working here,” Mr Abdulwaha said.

“I told him there were none, and the outlaw was upset and said I had lied to him.”

Mr Abdulwaha then explained there was a female Buddhist Thai civil servant identified as Suchada sae Li working at the TAO as a community development officer, level 3, but she was on leave.'

The million-dollar question is this. Suppose Ms Suchada sae Li had *not* been on leave. Suppose she had been present at the office, or suppose she had merely been out to lunch.

Would, or would not Mr Abdulwahi have made the smallest attempt to warn her or - were she somewhere on the premises - to conceal her presence and protect her from the assassins?

Or...would he and the other Muslim employees have handed her over without a blink, and then stood by and watched and enjoyed and even participated in whatever violence was visited upon her - very likely not simply a shooting or throat-slitting, but rape, mutilation, and, finally, the burning of the body?

That is the question that the Thai Buddhists have to begin asking themselves, in cases like this.

Ms Suchada sae Li, the one and only Buddhist (and a woman, furthermore) in an office full of Muslims, in a region where jihad is growing ever more violent and open, is in great danger.

Here is that telling paragraph:

''There is a saying among insurgents: 'Get Buddhists, gain merit,"' says Khru Ya, a retired Muslim teacher in Pattani province. "They believe that if they kill Buddhists, they will go to heaven."'

How useful to have at least one Muslim prepared to spill *some* of the beans.

That line' 'Get Buddhists, get merit', and the explanation, 'they believe that if they kill Buddhists, they will go to heaven', recalls the statement made by a North African Muslim in Paris, one Adel Amastaibou, just after he had ambushed and murdered his Jewish colleague, Sebastien Selam, "I killed a Jew; I will go to Paradise".

And here is something from a very, very popular Hadith collection, one you can probably find in any standard Islamic bookshop; it is certainly readily available online.

"When judgment day arrives, Allah will give every Muslim a Jew or Christian to kill so that the Muslim will not enter into hell fire." -- Mohammed (Mishkat Al-Messabih, vol. 2, no. 5552.)

It seems that Buddhists - or quite possibly any kind of Infidel - will do as the sacrificial victim, if a Jew or a Christian is not available.

Mr Khru Ya, of course, hopes that we and the Thai journalist interviewing him don't realize that this belief that killing a non-Muslim is the way to get into paradise, is not some weird aberration held by 'insurgents' (the Tiny Minority of Extremists), but is present within...Islam as such.

Montaigne put it succinctly, in the 16th century:

"The Assassins, a people dependent on Phoenicia, are considered among Mohammedans as being of supreme devoutness and purity of morals.

"They hold that the most certain way to deserve Paradise is to kill someone of a different religion."

It's a long, long way from the suburbs of Paris to the rubber plantations of southern Thailand, or from either, to the Levant of the 16th century. Yet in all three we find exactly the same principle: declared by Muslim 'insurgents' in Thailand, by a Muslim murderer of a Jew, in Paris, and observed and acerbly summarised by a sceptical Frenchman, in the Levant.
