Obama White House opposed new Iran sanctions

Remember the Obama of the debates? The one who aggressively touted strong sanctions as the way to stop Iran's nuclear program? Well, that was just as much of an act to get votes as was his pose as a Zionist.

"White House opposed new Iran sanctions," by Josh Rogin in Foreign Policy, November 30 (thanks to Kenneth):

The White House announced its opposition to a new round of Iran sanctions that the Senate unanimously approved Friday, in the latest instance of Congress pushing for more aggressive punitive measures on Iran than the administration deems prudent.

On Thursday, Sens. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Mark Kirk (R-IL) introduced the amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, which the Senate passed 94-0. The new legislative language would blacklist Iran's energy, port, shipping, and shipbuilding sectors, while also placing new restrictions on Iran's ability to get insurance for all these industries. The legislation would also vastly expand U.S. support for human rights inside Iran and impose new sanctions on Iranians who divert humanitarian assistance from its intended purpose.

"The window is closing. The time for the waiting game is over," Menendez said on the Senate floor Thursday night. "Yes, our sanctions are having a demonstrable effect on the Iranian economy, but Iran is still working just as hard to develop nuclear weapons."

But the White House told several Senate offices Thursday evening that the administration was opposed to the amendment. National Security Spokesman Tommy Vietor sent The Cable the administration's official position, explaining the White House's view the sanctions aren't needed and aren't helpful at this time....

"We do not believe additional authority to apply more sanctions on Iran is necessary at this time," read the e-mail, which the NSC legislative affairs office said represented the entire administration's view. "At the same time, we are concerned that this amendment is duplicative and threatens to confuse and undermine some of the TRA provisions."...

Finally, the White House doesn't want to implement the part of the new legislation that would require reports to Congress on the thousands of boats that dock at Iranian ports and the dozens of Iranian planes that make stops at airports around the world. Those reporting requirements "will impose serious time burdens on the Intelligence Community and sanctions officers," the White House said in the e-mail.

The Obama administration often touts the Iran sanctions it once opposed. In the final presidential debate Oct. 22, President Barack Obama said his administration had "organized the strongest coalition and the strongest sanctions against Iran in history, and it is crippling their economy."...

Who in the intelligence community said they could not handle the additional burden of of more reporting requirements? The senate voted 94-0 on these increased sanctions and Obama is against them because of an added effort. If we are to take the threat of a nuclear threat serious then there is no viable excuse to not increase the sanctions. If it take an increase of personal in the intelligence community, then so be it. Other alternatives will be much more expensive.

Mr. Bean, the guy with no character save malevolent incompetence.

From the article - "On Thursday, Sens. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Mark Kirk (R-IL) introduced the amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, which the Senate passed 94-0."

More:

"The window is closing. The time for the waiting game is over," Menendez said on the Senate floor Thursday night. "Yes, our sanctions are having a demonstrable effect on the Iranian economy, but Iran is still working just as hard to develop nuclear weapons."

Looks like Menendez is getting the wind up about Iran and its little nuke project. **Excellent**.

Jihadwatchers: Senators Menendez and Kirk require to be congratulated and commended forthwith. And indeed, all the Senators who passed the Act.

Send them formal, snailmail letters. And in every letter, place - for their further information - printed-off copies of either Jacques Ellul's min-essay on Jihad, which formed the foreword to Bat Yeor's 'The Decline of Eastern Christianity Under Islam',

http://www.dhimmi.org/Foreword.html

or of Patrick L Moore's classic essay on the same topic, 'From Cold War to Guerra Fria', which was first published in 1994, seven years before September 11.

"Hugh Fitzgerald', formidably erudite former frequent contributor here, tracked it down two years ago, and flagged it at his current hangout:

From The Annals Of Serendip: Patrick L. Moore

"I just took a brief detour through Googleland, seeking more about what the late, insufficiently-recognized Adda Bozemam [Bozeman]. wrote about the inexorable conflict between Islam and the West (or as I prefer to put it: "Islam and the Rest").

"One of the articles summoned up for me was an article on Jihad by Patrick L. Moore, written in [June 30] 1994."

"I thought it was so remarkably lucid -- one of the best pieces on Jihad and the failures of American and Western policy -- that I have reprinted it below:...". (Click on the link and read).

If our politicians and diplomats could just be persuaded to take fifteen minutes out of their busy schedules and read those two essays - by Ellul, and by Moore - and **take them to heart and begin to shape domestic and foreign policy accordingly** - we would be a whole lot safer.

And it might be an idea to point congressmen and senators in the direction of Raymond Ibrahim's classic series of articles on the way in which Muslims have historically used and use deception to get the drop on Infidels.

A knowledge of taqiyya and other forms of sacralised Islamic deception is essential for *any* non-Muslim dealing with Muslims; it is especially necessary for dealing with Islamic Iran, for even among Muslims themselves Shiites are acknowledged as masters of the art.

First item by Mr Ibrahim, author of 'The Al Qaeda Reader':

Islam's doctrines of deception
by Raymond Ibrahim, in
Jane's Islamic Affairs Analyst
, October 2008

Excerpt:

"To better understand Islam, one must appreciate the thoroughly legalistic nature of the religion.

"According to sharia (Islamic law) every conceivable human act is categorised as being either forbidden, discouraged, permissible, recommended, or obligatory.

"Common sense" or "universal opinion" has little to do with Islam's notions of right and wrong.

"Only what Allah (through the Quran) and his prophet Muhammad (through the Hadith) have to say about any given issue matters; and how Islam's greatest theologians and jurists – collectively known as the ulema, literally, "they who know" – have articulated it.

"According to sharia, in certain situations, deception – also known as 'taqiyya', based on Quranic terminology, – is not only permitted but sometimes obligatory...".

"According to the authoritative Arabic text, Al-Taqiyya Fi Al-Islam:

"Taqiyya [deception] is of fundamental importance in Islam. Practically every Islamic sect agrees to it and practices it. We can go so far as to say that the practice of taqiyya is mainstream in Islam, and that those few sects not practicing it diverge from the mainstream...Taqiyya is very prevalent in Islamic politics, especially in the modern era."...

"If Islam must be in a constant state of war with the non-Muslim world – which need not be physical, as radicals among the ulema have classified several non-literal forms of jihad, such as "jihad-of-the-pen" (propaganda), and "money-jihad" (economic) – and if Muslims are permitted to lie and feign loyalty to the infidel to further their war efforts, offers of peace, tolerance or dialogue from extremist Muslim corners are called into question...".

Mr Ibrahim's second discussion of the subject:

War and Peace - and Deceit - in Islam
by Raymond Ibrahim

Editor's note: Substantial portions of the following essay made up part of Mr. Ibrahim's written testimony that was presented to Congress on February 12, 2009.

(Note: sounds as though all congresspersons who were present at that time, could do with being reminded).

"How Taqiyya Alters Islam's Rules of War: Defeating Jihadist Terrorism," by Raymond Ibrahim in the Middle East Quarterly, Winter 2010.

And fourthly, on another subspecies of Mohammed strategic deception, the tactic known as tawriyya:

Tawriya: New Islamic Doctrine Permits 'Creative Lying'

Of course, it isn't just our politicians that need to get this stuff through their heads. It's our diplomats, our financiers, our businessmen, our religious leaders, and our military (from the lowliest private to the shiniest of the top brass), and our law enforcement (from Sergeant Plod all the way on up to the Commissioners of Polcie).

They just have to 'get' that classical Islam pits all Muslims against all Infidels in a zero-sum-game, a war that is intended to have only one end - the entire world subject to Muslims, and to the sharia of Islam - and in that perpetual war between dar al Islam (where Muslims already dominate and rule) and dar al Harb (where Muslims do not yet rule the roost), deception will be used by Muslims just as readily as (and in some circumstances, more readily than) open violence.

And that therefore it is, alas, the most prudent course of action, in any unavoidable interaction with a Muslim person or entity, to assume the worst from the get-go, to assume that the Mohammedan is *not* acting or speaking in good faith, and to treat all Muslim propositions and protestations with extreme scepticism. And to *not* rely on *any* deal made with Muslims.

More sanctions "will impose serious time burdens on the Intelligence Community and sanctions officers." What kind of crummy rationale is that? Yeah, wouldn't want to burden the poor federal employees. Not like a nuclear armed sharia state poses a serious security threat or anything..

A better rationale for opposing the sanctions would be that no number of sanctions have impeded Iran from its nuclear progress. Let's focus on results.
