(One might add, by the by, that the word 'thug' is from Thuggee, a human sacrifice-cult-cum-organised-crime-gang that used to operate in India; I have sometimes wondered how much Thuggee may have owed to the influence of Islam, just as one can wonder how much the malign spiritual and cultural influence of Islam may have had to do with the rise of the Mafia in southern Italy, or how much Hitler in creating Nazism was influenced by his attentive and approving reading of at least two books written by an Indian Muslim fomenter of jihad. And the word 'amok' from 'to run amok' comes into English from bitter experience of a heavily Islamised society, Malaysia. Sudden Jihad Syndrome seems to happen not only where a Muslim colony has established itself amidst non-Muslims, but also *within* Islamised societies).

Muslims are only supposed to behave violently towards non-Muslims and not towards each other, but the trouble is, violence breeds violence so Muslims will find an excuse to be violent towards each other, often by using some form of scapegoating.
Mohammed made it easy for them to persecute each other by saying that any Muslim who doesn't follow the rules is not a true Muslim. Sunnis see Shia as being heretics and therefore not true Muslims. This is how they justify their hostility. Likewise, any Muslim who has a grievance against his neighbour can claim that his neighbour is a blasphemer or a shirker and in his own mind this will justify any animosity.
This is how the Muslim world operates. Muslims are exposed to bullying and intimidation from an early age and unfortunately they are addicted to it!

Of course, the black gangsters who shot their enemies dead in hospitals didn't think they were pleasing Allah by doing so and that such an action would guarantee a place in paradise with 72 virgins.

That fundamental difference blows apart the apparent similarity you appear to present!

The Thuggees were descended from Muslim tribes which came into India from the north.

It appears they might have "co-opted" Kali; the "slaves of Allah" became "servants of Kali". It was a kind of protection racket; "join us and you are safe". The loot was seen as Kali's "gift" and the killings were done "by Kali" through the Thugs. (cf Allah as killer, no need for guilt.)
Thuggee combined elements of Islam and Hinduism...the men lining up for pre-murder prayers, the goat sacrifice, the punishment for apostasy, the code language so like Islamic code-speak, seem pretty Islamic to me.
Some people believe Thuggee might have been a Hindu reaction to poverty and marginalisation as a result of Muslim invasion. I don't think so; there was too much "Islam" in it, and theft was not as important as the murder ritual. From what I read (some was fiction, but still...) the Muslim element was too strong, and there seemed to be manipulation of the Hindu Thugs by the Muslims, as we see here today sometimes in gangs.
I was fascinated by the film of John Masters' book "The Deceivers" made by the Muslim Ismael Merchant. He managed to persuade English dhimmis to distort the story such that it became anti-British, anti-Christian and maligning of Hinduism as well; for example the Englishman who broke the Thugs' society was portrayed as arrogantly saying "My God is stronger than yours" to a Muslim upon whom he pushes a cross, whereas in the book the Muslim ASKS for the cross, saying "Your God is stronger than mine", and offers to help destroy Thuggee with the help of the cross. And so on...relentless in its distortions (which no reviewer noticed!)
