Syria: "Our first goal is to get rid of Assad. Then we want a state where the Quran is the only source of law."

They want to make Syria a Sharia state, which means no alcohol or tobacco, or "immoral" movies and TV shows. No one seems to be offering any other vision of Sharia, despite claims in the West that it is so multifarious as to defy easy characterization.

"Jabhat Al Nusra's new Syria," by Balint Szlanko for The National, December 15 (thanks to Lachlan):

The man wearing the balaclava had eyes that never stopped smiling.

Reclining on a pillow in an otherwise empty room, this burly, 41-year-old commander of Jabhat Al Nusra - the most fearsome jihadi group in Syria - exuded an almost disturbing calm, in marked contrast to the loud, chatty air that often characterises more mainstream groups of the Free Syrian Army.

The man, who calls himself Sheikh Abu Ahmed and said he was the military commander of Jabhat Al Nusra in the Hasakah governorate of eastern Syria, spoke to The National in the north-eastern town of Ras el Ayn, where fighting between Islamist rebels and the Kurdish PYD party has killed dozens of militants in recent weeks.

Dressed in plain clothes, Abu Ahmed outlined his group's vision for a new Syria.

"Our first goal is to get rid of Assad. Then we want a state where the Quran is the only source of law," he said. "Sharia is the right path for all humanity - all other laws make people unhappy."

Jabhat Al Nusra has emerged this year as the most powerful and high-profile Salafist group in the Syrian conflict, openly embracing suicide bombing as an important weapon against a technologically superior enemy. It has claimed several successful attacks, many of which have killed civilians, on major government targets such as the Damascus headquarters of the elite air force intelligence service....

Sitting in an unheated room furnished with only a carpet and a few pillows, Abu Ahmed described a new Syria, where alcohol and tobacco would be banned.

"These rules will be introduced gradually. We will advise people at first," he said when this journalist pointed out that enforcing such a law would be difficult in a country where smoking is so widespread.

Cinema and "immoral" TV shows would also be banned. "They corrupt the morals, especially of young people. Just look at the West," he said, adding that he had recently read in a magazine that in Germany, only 10 per cent of women were virgins by the time they got married.

Wouldn't the young be angry at such measures? "Perhaps they will be. But they will get used to it eventually," Abu Ahmed said....

But he didn't think this was a danger. "We don't want to leave modernity behind. We will not get out of our cars and ride donkeys from now on. We simply want our judges to apply Sharia [law] and not the civil code," he said. He also argued that in earlier eras Islam achieved great technological progress. "We are underdeveloped now because we left the path of Allah. Perhaps this is why this war is so cruel: as a punishment for our sins."...

Jabhat Al Nusra has parallels with Al Qaeda and has been endorsed by it as the purest Islamist group in Syria. Abu Ahmed claimed his group had no links to Al Qaeda and stressed that their goals were purely Syrian. "We will respect everybody who respects us," he said.

But he also expressed sympathy with Al Qaeda.

"I like them because they are mujaheddin who want to apply Sharia," he said. He added that the killing of civilians is acceptable as long as it's a response to a similar attack. Jabhat Al Nusra is also linked to at least one execution of captured Syrian soldiers, a probable war crime, and beheadings of suspected spies.

The emergence of such extremist groups has greatly concerned some of Syria's minorities, such as the Christians and the Alawites, many of whom still support the Assad government as a result. Abu Ahmed said the minorities had nothing to fear, pointing to a long history of Christian presence in Muslim countries. "As for the Kurds, they will have no need for autonomy - they are Muslims, too, so we can live together," he said.

Yet in its communications, Jabhat al Nusra has embraced a fierce sectarian message. According to an analysis by the International Crisis Group (ICG), the group routinely refers in derogatory terms to "the Alawite enemy" - the main support base of the regime - and its "Shiite agents"....

Abu Ahmed admitted that there were foreign fighters in his group - mostly from other Arab countries - but he said they were only a very small minority.

Analysts say that many of its fighters are veterans of wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere. He said they took no financing from external powers and that their weapons were either self-purchased or ghanima - war spoils. The ICG report suggests that they probably receive money from private donors with jihadist sympathies, mainly in the region.

Abu Ahmed worked as a bus driver before the war. He said he'd always been very religious and as a result had problems with the security services.

"We joined the demonstrations in the very beginning but only took up arms when they started shooting at us," he said. "Our faith is very strong and we're not afraid of death, of becoming martyrs. This is what drives us, what makes us brave. We will not stop until the regime falls. And I advise all my people to be good Muslims to help win this war."

"Sharia is the right path for all humanity...

No it's not...

- all other laws make people unhappy...

No they don't...

I hope I have made myself perfectly clear...Any questions?

"We are underdeveloped now because we left the path of Allah. Perhaps this is why this war is so cruel: as a punishment for our sins."

Ahahaha, that's rich!

"...Jabhat Al Nusra - the most fearsome jihadi group in Syria..."

"Jabhat Al Nusra has emerged this year as the most powerful and high-profile Salafist group in the Syrian conflict, openly embracing suicide bombing..."

One important detail this report doesn't tell the reader is supplied by a vitally informative article which Diana West published eleven days ago who, as usual, ties together many disparate but alarming facts about the ongoing Syrian jihad against Assad -- the detail, namely, that the "diverse" pastiche of various Syrian opposition rebel groups all support and admire Jabhat-Al-Nusra.

She quotes from the New York Times:

...a growing number of anti-government groups — including fighters in the loose-knit Free Syrian Army that the United States is trying to bolster — have signed petitions or posted statements online in recent days expressing support for the Nusra Front... many called for this Friday’s title [note: to coincide with Friday prayers] to be “No to American intervention — we are all Jabhet al-Nusra.”

(What they mean by "American intervention, of course, is any possible intervention in support of Assad. Surely, they won't mind Obama's assistance in money and materiel.)

Then Diana West quotes from The Daily Mail:

A total of 29 opposition groups, including fighting "brigades" and civilian committees, have signed a petition calling for mass demonstrations in support of Jabhat al-Nusra...

And in the midst of all this, Obama has officially declared his support for the "Syrian opposition".

@ LL,

you are off the mark this time. While declaring support for the syrian rebels,Obama has singled out al-Nasra & designated it as a 'terrorrist organisatin' owing to its links with Al-Qaeda.

check your facts again.

@LL
you are off the mark this time. While declaring(unsolicited) support to the syrian rebels,Obama designated al-Nusra as a 'terrorist organisation'owing to its allegiance to al-Qaeda.

check your facts again.

This guy's beliefs and general world view are so far from reality he is clinically insane.

Dangerously insane.

and insane man with a gun...
m

he said. "Sharia is the right path for all humanity - all other laws make people unhappy."

Sorry to disagree with you *oh clueless one* but sharia law would make me most UNhappy ...

He is right: All other laws make people unhappy.
Sharia makes imams happy because they sodomize kids at madrasses. When I was there, Many Muslim men told they wish they had prostitues. They took me duck hunting, but they didn't bring any gun. They paid a duck shepherd for killing his ducks after having sex with them.

They don't want their children be born with feathers, or duck head or webbed feet or left and right wings.

"the most fearsome jihadi group in Syria - exuded an almost disturbing calm"

an "almost" disturbing calm? ...okay just say that it WAS disturbing and creepy to boot.

"Jabhat Al Nusra is also linked to at least one execution of captured Syrian soldiers, a probable war crime, and beheadings of suspected spies."

Nothing these murderers are doing is "unislamic", since their prophet did exactly the same:

http://www.faithfreedom.org/debates/PaymanSaqib.htm

Therefore what they are doing is "halal"......

How sweet it will be, the text of pure shear searing hatred is to dictate the law, and be the be-all and end-all legal reference.

Imagine the perfect justice to be meeted out, especially to women, those disposable possesions of the left and right hands, even better than the Roman spectacles of bloodshed in the arenas! Won't that be a party in the park?

Gee, guess I'm not even impressed by the idea, huh?

And the "most brilliant POTUS ever" wishes to align US policy with these soulsmates to the folks who brought us 9/11.

"Our first goal is to get rid of Assad. Then we want a state where the Quran is the only source of law," he said. "Sharia is the right path for all humanity - all other laws make people unhappy."

*Grimly laughable*. I he thinks Syria is underdeveloped now, how does he imagine a few years of Shari'ah will improve matters? We see just this process in Egypt, where investers are pulling out in droves, and many liberals and Christians are already looking for a way out, which will become even more pronounced when full Shari'ah is imposed.

With respect, I don't see how this really makes much of a difference, Lookman. If the West does wind up materially supporting the Syrian rebels, how will it matter whether how we officially designate Jabhat Al Nusra?

They will benefit from our aiding in the fall of Assad, just as the "Islamists" have in Libya with the fall of Gadaffi.

And when they impose Shari'ah law in Syria, will anyone really care how the US designated them? Once they are in power, we will likely deal with them, in any case—just like with the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, and try to convince ourselves that Jabhat Al Nusra, now that they are in power, will be concerned with 'good governance'.

The problem with any state that says stuff like this is that the religious book is open to interpretation. Those who are not authorized to interpret the holy book are usually labeled heretics by the regime.

Why the hell are we helping these Fascists?!

"Our first goal is to get rid of Assad. Then we want a state where the Quran is the only source of law,"--Abu Ahmed

He's a Quran-only Muslim. How reassuring.

(I know, I know, he's not really a Quran-only Muslim. In his enthusiasm to spew a lot of grandiose b.s. to the journalists, he is merely getting carried away in laying it on thick and is not talking precisely. And yes, I know, being a Quran-only Muslim is not a good thing anyway...I was being sarcastic).

"They paid a duck shepherd for killing his ducks after having sex with them."

So what? In Islam it's OK to have sex with ducks!

"There is no punishment for having intercourse with a dead woman or with an animal."

lookmann, I went to the trouble of supplying links for my claims.

You supplied none.

P.S.: lookmann,

As I proved with my links, the entire Syrian opposition is tainted with support for Al-Nusra. So how can Obama support the "Syrian opposition" without supporting Al-Nusra?

I noticed it too...That would mean that none of Mahounds edicts have any standing...A Quran only Mahoundian told me that the Mahound of the Quran is not the Mahound of hadith...

Strange, looks like Hamas is going to join in the Syrian pile on. Strange in the fact that of all idiot groups in the ME they get their weaponry from both Wahabi Sunni Saudi's and Shia' Persian's.

Okay let me try an html link to Arutz Sheva, English version:

Hamas preparing for war against Abbas?

Hamas is preparing to duplicate its 2007 civil war in Gaza and has instructed terror cells in Judea and Samaria to get ready for a military coup to oust Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, according to a London Sunday Times based on Israeli intelligence sources.

The orders reportedly came from Hamas’ supreme leader Khaled Mashaal, who recently visited Gaza to celebrate what the terrorist organization claimed was a victory over Israel in last month’s missile war.

Citing unnamed officials in the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet), the London newspaper said that Iran is behind the plan for a coup. According to the Sunday Times, Iran wants to have an allied militia in Judea and Samaria, parallel to Hamas in Gaza and Hizbullah in Lebanon.

Tawfik Tirawi, a former PA intelligence director and now a senior member of Abbas’ Fatah party, told the newspaper, "Hamas wants intifada and will take over the West Bank.

“We’re on the verge of catastrophe,” he said.

“Bibi [Netanyahu] understands the geopolitical changes in the Middle East. No way would [he] give up an inch of the West Bank - he is convinced that the intelligence assessment about a Muslim Brotherhood [Hamas] takeover is solid,” according to the London newspaper.

The report provides evidence that Prime Minister Netanyahu is making it clear that Israel is not to be shown as being weak. The intelligence information may have been one of the reasons, if not the major cause, for his recent and unusually solid nationalist statements for building new homes for Jews in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria.

It also contradicts mainstream media claims that Netanyahu's statements were part of an election campaign to attract nationalists away from the Jewish Home party.

The information published in London totally eliminates the idea promoted by leftist commentators that Netanyahu’s’ policies are designed to strengthen Hamas at the expense of Abbas, who has advertised himself as a “peace partner.” Abbas has won international support for demands that preclude negotiations on future borders while at the same time promoting unity with Hamas.

@LL,

here are the links;

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/syria/9725166/US-to-ban-Islamists-leading-the-rebel-fight-in-Syria.html

The idea that syrian rebels
are'angels of democracy'comes from US state dept,.It is not mine. The ban on al-Nusra is an escape-route, apart from hoodwinking US public, who are forced to think only Al-Qaeda is bad and all other Islamists [like MB] are
peace-loving liberals.

The hyper-brains at state dept,.got a slap when syrian rebels exposed their
'umbilical cord' relationship with al-Nusra,calling for the revocation of ban on it.

"The ban on al-Nusra is an escape-route, apart from hoodwinking US public"

It's a brazenly and blatantly untenable escape route since the entire Syrian opposition supports al-Nusra, as my post's link (above) to the Diana West article proved.

Thanks for that story, and for the links.

None of this surprises me in the least. Muslims have always been utterly unprincipled about switching sides. Whichever Jihad group seems to be in ascendancy, many local Muslims will pile on and abandon their former allies without blinking. As long as it's Islamic, Muslims will mostly just "back the strong horse".

Just one of many lovely Muslim traits...
