Boston Globe does victory dance after engineering cancellation of Robert Spencer talk

Here is the Boston Globe's story today, with my comments interspersed. You can see my exchanges with Globe reporter Lisa Wangsness, who (I'm told) exhorted people to call the diocese to get my talk canceled, here.

Please contact the diocese of Worcester and let them know, politely and courteously, that you disapprove of their capitulation to Islamic supremacists and refusal to give me an opportunity to answer their charges or get a fair hearing.

"Catholic event cancels talk by Islam critic," by Lisa Wangsness for the Boston Globe, January 31:

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester rescinded an invitation Wednesday to Robert Spencer, a Catholic whose work depicts Islam as an inherently violent religion, to speak at its annual Catholic Men’s Conference in March.

My work depicts Islam the way Islam is depicted in the Qur'an and Sunnah, and by Muslim leaders around the world. I just report on what they say. If they say Islam is inherently violent, and they do, in hundreds of ways, every day, in all parts of the globe, then I report on that. This is a very common Islamic supremacist tactic to try to deflect attention away from the numerous calls to hatred of and violence against Infidels by Muslim clerics: to claim that non-Muslim foes of jihad and Islamic supremacism are "linking Islam to terrorism" in some unacceptable and illegitimate way when they report on how Muslim clerics link Islam to terrorism. And here we have a Boston Globe reporter using their tactic.

The invitation was withdrawn after Muslims in Massachusetts expressed concerns to the diocese about the appearance of Spencer, scheduled to be a featured speaker at the DCU Center on March 16.

They "expressed concerns," all right. They "expressed concerns" in a highly defamatory screed that you can read here. No one in the diocese of Worcester made any attempt to verify its charges. They just fell in line without question, like good dhimmis.

Note also that I have been told that Lisa Wangsness herself, the Boston Globe reporter, exhorted people to call the diocese of Worcester and ask that my talk be canceled. She denies this, but I don't know why my sources would invent such a story if it weren't true. It's extraordinarily irresponsible behavior from a "journalist," of course, but journalistic integrity is pretty much a thing of the past these days, and virtually all mainstream media journalists are propagandists for causes rather than objective reporters, so I am not all that surprised.

Spencer is director of the blog Jihad Watch and a leader of the American Freedom Defense Initiative and Stop Islamization of America, both of which are seen as anti-Muslim groups by some organizations that monitor extremism.

I expect that Lisa Wangsness did not mention by name the "organizations that monitor extremism" because even Boston Globe readers would recognize that the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Center for American Progress are hard-Left propaganda groups that smear conservatives for cash, rather than engage in genuine and impartial analysis.

His books include “Stealth Jihad: How Radical Islam is Subverting America without Guns or Bombs,” “The Truth About Muhammad: Founder of the World’s Most Intolerant Religion,” and “Inside Islam: A Guide for Catholics.” On his blog, he has argued that jihad is a central tenet of the faith.

No honest Muslim would deny that jihad is a central tenet of the faith. Many in the West argue that it is solely a spiritual struggle to improve oneself, as we see in Hamas-linked CAIR's cynical and deceptive #MyJihad campaign. However, all too many of their coreligionists around the world daily confirm that they regard jihad as involving warfare against Infidels. Classic Islamic theology holds that both meanings are correct -- thus to declare that it is a spiritual struggle alone is inaccurate and deceptive, as is claiming that it is not a central tenet of Islam.

After the Globe sought comment on his scheduled appearance from the diocese and from Muslim organizations Wednesday, the Islamic Council of New England sent an e-mail urging Catholic leaders to cancel Spencer’s appearance. The diocese agreed to do so shortly after receiving the e-mail.

“Although the intention of the conference organizers was to have a presenter on Islam from a Catholic’s perspective, we are asking Robert Spencer to not come to the Worcester Catholic Men’s Conference, given that his presence is being seen as harmful to Catholic–Islamic relations both locally and nationally,” Raymond Delisle, a spokesman for the diocese, said in a statement issued to the Globe.

Raymond Delisle never asked me not to come. He never communicated with me at all. He never sought my response to the Islamic Council's libelous letter. In any case, I am thinking going to the Worcester Catholic Men's Conference anyway. I am told that many of the organizers and attendees wanted to hear my presentation, so maybe I will give it in a hallway, or on the sidewalk outside.

The conference is a religious and social gathering for Catholic men, as well as their male friends and relatives, that typically includes talks from prominent Catholic men, a Mass said by the bishop, and the opportunity to attend confession.

Dr. Abdul Cader Asmal, cochairman of communications for the Islamic Council of New England, called the cancellation of Spencer’s speech “very reassuring” and said it was consistent with longstanding good relations between the Muslim and Catholic communities in Massachusetts.

“Somebody may have been blindsided by Robert Spencer, not knowing exactly what kind of hatemonger he was,” he said.

Blindsided by me? I was the only one blindsided here -- as I said last night, tried, convicted and executed without any chance to tell my side of the story or clear my name. Neither Lisa Wangsness nor Raymond Delisle had the wit to ask Abdul Asmal who among critics of jihad and Islamic supremacism he does not regard as a "hatemonger" -- this kind of defamation is also a tactic, one that is used against everyone who dares speak out against Sharia-justified warfare against and persecution of non-Muslims, oppression of women, etc.

Spencer, in an e-mail late Wednesday afternoon, said the diocese had not notified him of the cancellation.

“If it does turn out to be true,” he said in another e-mail, “it is new evidence of the cowardice of Roman Catholic officials in confronting the reality of Muslim persecution of Christians and their inability to grasp the importance [of] basing genuine dialogue between religions on truth, however unpleasant, rather than on wishful thinking and comforting fictions.”

In an earlier e-mail, he defended his work.

“There is nothing hateful or bigoted about what I say,” he said. “My work is in defense of the freedom of speech, the freedom of conscience, and the equality of rights of all people before the law.”

In September, the American Freedom Defense Initiative posted ads in the New York subway system that referred to Islamists who opposed the state of Israel as “savages.” The group is now running a second series of ads featuring photographs of the burning World Trade Center alongside a quotation attributed to the Koran: “Soon we shall cast terror into the hearts of unbelievers.”

Sheesh. The Qur'an is online in multiple places, and the ad gives the chapter and verse number: 3:151. Wangsness could have looked it up. Instead, she implies that I made it up. That's "journalism" for you. In any case, those who destroyed the World Trade Center were, by their own account, motivated by verses of the Qur'an like that one. So what exactly is the problem with the ad? And this fact is denied and obfuscated everywhere today, while Islamic supremacists advance the same Sharia agenda of the 9/11 hijackers by different means -- hence the need for the ad in the first place.

In any case, at least Wangsness had the integrity to note that our other ad referred to "Islamists who opposed the state of Israel" as “savages” -- many of her "journalist" colleagues made the false claim that the ad referred to all Muslims as "savages." As she stated it, who could have any problem with our assertion? The "Islamists who opposed the state of Israel” passed out candies to celebrate the brutal murders of the Fogel family, including small children. That's not savage?

Spencer was a leading opponent of the Park51 project to build a mosque and Islamic cultural center in lower Manhattan, which he has referred to on his blog as the “Islamist supremacist mega-mosque at Ground Zero.”

Never once did I refer to it by this phrase. Not once. I did refer to it as an "Islamic supremacist mega-mosque at Ground Zero," which is close to what Wangsness said, but not the same thing. Again, that's "journalism" for you. Anyway, the phrase was apt. The people behind the mosque had ties to Palestinian jihadis and the Muslim Brotherhood -- hence "Islamic supremacist." It was slated to be a 16-story structure that aped the architecture of the destroyed World Trade Center towers -- hence "mega-mosque." And it was to be built on the site of a building that was extensively damaged in the 9/11 attacks -- hence "at Ground Zero."

He has also raised alarms about multiculturalism and what he believes to be the threat of Sharia, Islamic religious law, undermining American courts and civil rights across the world.

It isn't just what I believe: Sharia has already been used as a determining factor in court cases in 23 states. And if Wangsness doesn't believe that Sharia undermines civil rights across the world, let her go to Riyadh or Tehran and venture outside with her head uncovered. Let her go to Khartoum or Islamabad and publicly criticize Muhammad. Let her go to Cairo or Karachi and ask the local Christians how they're faring.

Oren Segal, codirector of the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism, called Spencer “the godfather of the anti-Muslim movement in this country.”

The Godfather. I love it. The offer I make is truth, but unfortunately they can and do refuse it.

Anyway, the "anti-Muslim" part is just a smear. My work is dedicated to the defense of the freedom of speech, the freedom of conscience, and the equality of rights of all people before the law. To characterize it as "anti-Muslim" is to imply that I want to deprive Muslims of due process or have them victimized by vigilantes, or worse. It is another tactic to try to turn people of good will away not just from my work, but from that of anyone resisting the jihad; the "anti-Muslim" label is designed to intimidate people into thinking that there's something wrong with opposing jihadists and Islamic supremacists.

Segal said there are legitimate concerns about people motivated by radical interpretations of Islam, which he said his organization has spoken out about forcefully. But Spencer, he said, is part of “a cottage industry . . . that under the guise of fighting radical Islam is actually demonizing an entire religion.”

Spencer, in another e-mail, said that the Anti-Defamation League “has unwisely ventured into leftist advocacy politics, spending more time combating friends of Israel on the right rather than enemies of Israel on the left. Its record in this is nothing short of shameful.”

Spencer says on his blog, Jihad Watch, where he posts many times a day, that he does not believe all Muslims espouse violence or that Islam is a monolithic faith.

But he calls violent jihad a “central element of Islamic theology,” citing a Koranic verse that says, in part, “Slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them [captive] and besiege them and prepare for them each ambush.”

Omid Safi, an Islamic studies scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said that there are indeed references like that to holy war in the Koran and that some Muslims in different periods of history have used them to justify their actions.

That does not mean, he said, that most modern Muslims accept them literally.

“If we go flipping through each other’s scriptures to persuade ourselves that other people’s scriptures contain violent elements, then that’s a losing game for all of us,” Safi said. “The question is: How do we make sense of them, and which ones do we call upon to live our lives today?”

In the Gospel of Matthew, he notes, Jesus says, “I come not to bring peace, but the sword.”

Yeah, that's why we see armed Christian groups making war against non-Christians worldwide, and quoting this verse. Of course, we don't see any such thing, and yet we do see armed jihadis all around the world making war against non-Muslims and justifying their actions by reference to the Qur'an. The difference is stark, and shows up the dishonesty of Safi's remarks.

Omid Safi is no stranger to dishonesty. He's an extremely dishonest pseudo-academic of extraordinarily low character. He has falsely claimed that I threatened to kill him and his family. He has a long-standing hatred of me based on my daring to challenge his dismissal of me with the manipulative Muslim Brotherhood neologism of "Islamophobe" and my outrageous offer to come to the class where he was discussing my work and engage in discussion and debate with him and his students.

Threatening to kill someone is a felony offense. Yet Omid Safi has never brought charges against me. Why? Because he is lying. I never threatened him or anyone. He is merely engaging in defamation. I complained to officials at the University of North Carolina about his highly unethical behavior, but got no action, of course, because his opinions are politically correct and mine aren't. So now we have an academic liar being cited as a source by a highly biased advocacy "journalist."

Also, this is more evidence of Wangsness's relentless bias. I want to know how she dug Safi up. Why did a Boston Globe reporter writing about a Massachusetts conference go to an academic in North Carolina to get comment on me? Why not someone from Harvard or Boston University or Tufts or any number of local universities? Was it because someone tipped her off that Safi would reliably provide negative comment on Spencer? Who did the tipping off?

Safi also said that Spencer has no formal training in Islamic studies or Arabic.

The Arabic charge is just a dodge. Does Safi really expect us to believe that "slay the idolaters" becomes "give the idolaters a hug" when rendered in Arabic?

Asked about his credentials, Spencer replied that his critics’ real problem is not his training.

“What I say about Islam is not unusual or eccentric,” he said. “Numerous scholars who have the credentials that those you have spoken with require, and many ex-Muslims, have made the same observations about Islamic doctrine that I have.”

Amjad Bahnassi, a member and occasional spokesman for the Worcester Islamic Center, said the Muslim community in the city generally has an excellent relationship with the Catholic Church.

Bahnassi said he counts a number of priests as friends and regularly speaks at Catholic churches about Islam. Next month he is scheduled to speak at Anna Maria College and Assumption College.

“I would have liked for them if they wanted to know about Islam’s view of Christianity to ask a Muslim,” he said of the organizers of the Catholic Men’s Conference.

Yes, they are sure to get an honest answer from the likes of the people who wrote the letter quoted here.

You can see my exchanges with Globe reporter Lisa Wangsness...

Why do all these female Leftist journalists all have weird names?

Here is the email I sent to the Bishop, with copies to Delisle, Smith, Wangsness, and Robert:

Dear Bishop McManus:

It has come to my attention that you have dis-invited Robert Spencer as a participant in the Worchester Catholic Men's Conference on the alleged grounds that he is "harmful to Catholic–Islamic relations both locally and nationally." I am writing to voice my dismay at this action, and to ask you to at a minimum extend to Mr. Spencer the courtesy of knowing what SPECIFIC writings or speeches of his caused you to reach this conclusion. I have read several hundred thousand of Mr. Spencer's words, including several of his New York Times' best-selling books, his articles published on third-party web sites, and of course his daily entries on his blog "jihadwatch.org".

For all that, I have NEVER seen any utterance that is in any way racist, hateful, or inciteful of any illegal or even anti-social or unpleasant action with regards to Muslims. Mr. Spencer takes great pains to repeatedly point out that sweeping generalizations about Muslims can never be accurate or enlightening, and therefore he never makes such blanket characterizations. Any criticisms he makes are directed either at specific individuals in response to things that they have said or done, or to Islam as a whole based on direct passages from the Koran and life of Muhammad. Mr. Spencer is meticulous in citing his sources, and they are therefore readily verified as accurate and in context by anyone so inclined. He has never advocated, as some have, sweeping or arbitrary actions (such as deportation, special security measures at airports, etc) against Muslims, or even any merely unpleasant actions such as shunning or harassing. His critique is of Islam, not of innocent Muslims. I hope you are not confusing the two, as many of Mr. Spencer's critics seem to.

I ask you to demand of Mr. Spencer's accusers **SPECIFIC** citations of what they find objectionable. Then you can be the judge, rather than basing judgement on the general and unsubstantiated allegations of people with the agenda of shutting down any and all informed debate on Islam and Muhammad. The spirit of honest inquiry that is so strong in the Catholic tradition (the Jesuits, etc) demands nothing less.

I look forward to your review of this case, and to your reversal of this lamentable decision.

Regards,

Liam M

Islamists, not just Muslims mind you, call the shots for every religion and everyone(including Muslims who wish for freedom and secularism). Every journalist, every artist, every politician, every citizen, everywhere.

And their leftist allies help them along at every step.Shame on them. Shame on them for the ones murdered in the name of Islamic supremacy yesterday, today, and surely tomorrow. They are accomplices and help them indirectly in those murders. There's no way around it.

I hope Lisa Wangsness makes it a mission to visit Jihad Watch, even for a week, and see those murders played out, around the globe, daily. Reported not by Robert Spencer, but by the AP, Reuters, and news orgs around the world. Yet, because Mr. Spencer COMPILES them together in one place and explains the Islamic reasoning used by the Islamists who use Koran and Sunnah for their attacks and oppression somehow HE is the bad guy?? What an upside down world we live in. (and this daily compilation is nowhere near the true amount of attacks and acts of theocratic oppression and supremacism, not even close!)

These journalists think they are the only thing that stands in the way of the treatment Muslims generally give non-Muslims being done back to them. What a joke and a God-like status they give themselves. So ridiculous. The left thinks they hold the tide back of pogroms against Muslims. LOL No, darling, that doesnt happen, not because of you, but because of our values on life and liberty.

"or on the sidewalk outside"

I was thinking the very same thing--although a different location.

But the sidewalk is even better.

He could have a few signs next to him pointing to "THE EVIL ROBERT SPENCER--RIGHT HERE" (or some such).

He SHOULD go there!

How embarrased would the diocese be to have attendees be able to hear him on their way out.

Excellent, IMF.

"I ask you to demand of Mr. Spencer's accusers **SPECIFIC** citations of what they find objectionable. "

Yes, this is the curious thing. Spencer is charged as an intolerant, hatemongering Islamophobe, who doesn't know anything about Islam. They also acknowledge that he's quite a prolific writer, both of books and of posts on his website. Yet, for all his voluminous writing, there seems to be an inexplicable lack of specific quotations from Spencer which would actually demonstrate that he's making broad, hateful statements, of that he's interpreting Islam in any way that's out of the mainstream of Islam both historically and currently. Funny how that is.

What strikes me is that this journalist didn't bother to return Robert's communication, yet found time to do another piece on him. If she were a real journalist she would have to produce a article where Robert could provide his opinions and how they are formed. But that's probably too much work for her, compared to copy-paste.

Dear Robert Spencer,

the Bishop and other people in the Diocese of Worcester and in the Boston Globe responsible for this cowardly act have only brought shame on themselves.

I am not a Catholic, or even a Christian, but in my humble opinion, assuming you are one, you deserve to be declared a Saint for your courageous defense of people's freedom from Islamic tyranny all round the world.

Please do not allow yourself to feel bad about this temporary setback in your just battle. Just remember that the people you are fighting against are basically very stupid and conventional people.

In the long run, God will certainly help a saintly man like you overcome all obstacles.

These people are political/religious prostitutes...The ignorant Catholics included...They deserve everything Allah has planned for them...

This story pretty much tells us where we are in this country in dealing with islam. The cast of characters stayed true to the script:

Lisa Wangsness ("Journalist") Not only was it clear from her questioning that she was setting Spencer up--but then she apparently actively participated in the manufacture of her own story. This way she could not just defame Spencer, but also get his speech cancelled. And she gets credit for the story, too, how about that! Then, in the story itself, those mysterious "people I've spoken to" who defamed Spencer turn out to be...MUSLIMS! Did she speak to any friendly witnesses for Spencer? Of course not! She came with an agenda and stuck with only those
"sources" that supported her agenda. If it weren't so transparent, it'd be damned clever.
And, how about that, "Gee, Mr. Spencer, while we're at it how about your address and phone number?" (Does she have Nathan Lean on speed-dial?) That the people with whom she colludes in this hit-piece are are of a cloth with those making death-threats to Spencer never crosses her liberally-addled mind...

The Diocese of Worcester? (Fat, Dumb, and Happy) Do you suppose that ANYONE in the diocese has EVER asked their muslim "friends" about muslims murdering Christians (and all others, too) around the world, every day? Golly, that would upset those "good relations" they have with their "co-religionists." That's so important to them, they're so proud of it! See, if you just mind your P's and Q's and don't upset the muslims, if you just go along, you can get along. Those Christians (and all others) who are murdered daily by muslims aren't important to the diocese; that's all happening far away, not affecting them. Hey, if the parking lots and the plates are full, they can't be bothered with these unpleasant truths. And, I notice that the imam gets around to speak in the diocese churches; wonder how many priests get to speak in the local mosques? Maybe Ms. Wangsness could investigate that and get back to us?

I think the bottom line here is that Mr. Spencer is a victim of his own success. Muslims are scared shitless of him--for the truth he tells-- and will stop at nothing to discredit and silence him. And, they have the active support of yellow journalists like Wangsness and ignorant, lazy, cowardly clergy like that in Worcester. All in all, not a pretty picture; but as Walter Cronkhite was wont to say, "That's the way it is..."

Lead me not into temptation but deliver me from evil...

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester, has flunked the test...They have allowed a Jezebel, to lead them into evil...Condemnation without a credible cause, and demonizing is evil, your Graces...You have been tainted...I'm not sure it will wash off...

I tried leaving a comment on the Globe's website but my username box would not open so I sent it directly to Ms. Wangsness. One of the points I made is that Robert would never petition anyone or any group to dis-invite any Islamic speaker. Yet Islamic groups do this all the time. All they have to do is send a letter and right away up goes the white flag.

Nearly seven years ago, I resigned my position as assistant editorial page editor at the East Valley Tribune of Mesa, Arizona, in protest over my putative superiors' refusal to print any of the Danish Muhammad cartoons with an op-ed piece I had written about the "cartoon jihad" -- which, it is now clear, was the opening salvo of Islam against free speech in the West. In one of my last pieces, I noted "radical Islam's chilling effect on free expression outside the Muslim world" and concluded that:

That chilling effect is already much in evidence among the mainstream American news media, which have made a near-unanimous capitulation to Muslim intimidation in deciding whether to run the Danish cartoons -- despite their centrality to what has been one of the most important stories of the year. With their willingness to yield on the bedrock issue of free expression, they have set a dreadful precedent; one certain to haunt us all in the years ahead.

These words were more prescient than I could possibly have imagined -- or dreaded. What I foresaw for American journalism was intimidation and silence, what has transpired is active collaboration and propaganda. It is utterly monstrous.

I sent them an e-mail also. I am not a Christian but these people,Diocese of Worcester group, can not be Christians either. Even if Robert Spencer were wrong on Islam, why would you not defeat him in an open debate with
the help of their muslim "scholars". This act of refusal of Robert by a Christian organization can be called, traison, suicide, ignorance, and very many other things all bad. Unbelievable.

Boston Globe does victory dance after engineering cancellation of Robert Spencer talk

Here is the Boston Globe's story today, with my comments interspersed. You can see my exchanges with Globe reporter Lisa Wangsness, who (I'm told) exhorted people to call the diocese to get my talk canceled, here.
.............................

If Lisa Wangsness is indeed a reporter and not a pundit, then this goes against every principle of professional journalism.

Not that I'm surprised.

More:

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester rescinded an invitation Wednesday to Robert Spencer, a Catholic whose work depicts Islam as an inherently violent religion, to speak at its annual Catholic Men’s Conference in March.

.............................

Yes. And it's so much easier to "shoot the messenger" than to have to take a look at the actual message—which is, of course, existentially alarming.

More:

“Although the intention of the conference organizers was to have a presenter on Islam from a Catholic’s perspective, we are asking Robert Spencer to not come to the Worcester Catholic Men’s Conference, given that his presence is being seen as harmful to Catholic–Islamic relations both locally and nationally..."
.............................

Robert Spencer's views are only "harmful to Catholic-Islamic relations" if you believe those relations should entail abject dhimmitude on the part of Catholics.

More:

Dr. Abdul Cader Asmal, cochairman of communications for the Islamic Council of New England, called the cancellation of Spencer’s speech “very reassuring”...
.............................

Of course he did. Here's Abdul Asmal, railing against "Islamophobes" and lying thorough his teeth about Jihad and Shari'ah:

"Plain Truths That Islamophobes Hate"

http://www.newageislam.com/muslims-and-islamophobia/plain-truths-that-islamophobes-hate/d/7490

He condemns the "War on Terror", and describes 9/11 as "mayhem", as though it was sort of Superbowl celebration that got out of hand. He also acts as though 9/11 were *the* act of Jihad terror, and that there have been no others. Instead, of course, there have been over 20,000 acts of Islamic savagery worldwide since 9/11 alone.

Most grimly hilariously of all, under the heading of "Islamophobia", he says *this*:

"There is currently a tsunami of Islamophobia that is swamping the country. Muslims recognize that the First Amendment grants all citizens freedom of speech, even if that speech is ‘hateful speech’. American Muslims have strongly defended freedom of speech."

I guess he was defending Mr. Spencer's freedom of speech, above. sarc/off

But of course I jest. In fact, he mentions Robert Spencer by name, and specifically urges Jihad enablers to mau-mau any group that asks him to speak, specifically to get him dis-invited, as here.

He also laments that "while government agencies may not be able to control the malevolence of Islamophobes like Robert Spencer..."—in other words, he laments the fact that we have a First Amendment at all. In other words, he is *no* champion of freedom of speech. What a surprise. sarc/off

those mysterious "people I've spoken to" who defamed Spencer turn out to be...MUSLIMS!

Did she ask to see the Mahoundians scholastic credentials, and further ask if they were authorized to speak for Islam, and who authorized them? All that is highly unlikely...Most likely she already had a 'thing' for Spencer and just assumed her Mahoundian
accomplices were experts because they are shahada addicts...

Hey, God-faudder, fa-ged about it! You gotta do what ya gotta do!! We know that "facts are denied and everythings ob-fussy-cated" BECAUSE of "wishful thinking and comforting fictions". Go ahead and whack em wid the truth!

Thank you for standing up for what is right, even though sometimes it hurts to do so...

This move by the Catholic organisation is not surprising, the core canonical texts of their creed contains beliefs that are only dissimilar to a certain degree with the Islamic injuctions, it is true that the Muslims follow their religious diktats literally while Christians largely disregard the difficult parts of their doctrines.

However, Islam thrives on this planet as a religion due to the presence of the other religions, if you argue that Islam is destructive, many would argue that Christianity was once destructive, this means that Islam stands a chance of some sort of reformation. Whether this reformation is tenable or not.

The similarity which made possible the continuous respect for Islam will always be there to support the Islamic presence in the west, thus, the Catholics would prefer to point fingers only at the 'terrorists in Islam' not the religion of Islam, granted, a few Christians aimed their criticisms on the Quranic verses, but the majority are silent.

The talk could still be given at a private location, could it not? The diocese only has the authority to refuse their own facilities...

Hi Mr. Swami,

It's clear to me that Wangsness charged into this with one agenda: To hurt--by public defamation--Robert Spencer and prevent his message from being heard. And the diocese?
Hey, life is good, they couldn't care less...

But I'm truly curious about this Abdul Cater Asmal character! Did he really get disbarred from practicing medicine? If so, does he still get to sign his name with the "MD" qualifier? The diocese cancelled Spencer on HIS protest?
Now, there's something the "crusading journalist" Wangsness should be looking into!

G

'Christianity' was never destructive...There is nothing Islamic similar...Anything that seems similar is a hallucination...The Quran is a dark fairy tale whispered into the ear of a psychotic Arab, by an incoherent angel named Gabriel...Christianity has nothing like that...

"anyway. I am told that many of the organizers and attendees wanted to hear my presentation, so maybe.."
Robert, tell them to hire a hall!

Wangsness is a coward and a WHIMP!! ...and a liar, as well; she lied to Robert. Also, she doesn't represent the Truth, which is suppose to be front and center in good journalism. And this whole thing doesn't speak well of the Boston Globe, either.

Robert Spencer's work doesn't "depict" anything. Robert merely documents the inherent violence in word and murderous actions by Muslims, committed daily, globally and in accordance with traditional Islamic interpretation by respected Muslim scholars.

End of story. Simply wishing for something otherwise to be true, will never make it so.

"Dr. Abdul Cader Asmal, cochairman of communications for the Islamic Council of New England, called the cancellation of Spencer’s speech “very reassuring” "
Well of course he would find the cancellation "reassuring"! Just like Goebbels found the Brown Shirts reassuring when they broke up the meetings of opposition parties.
Why does the Diocese listen to this Abdul Goebbels Asmal anyway?

That does not mean, he said, that most modern Muslims accept them literally.

If a Mahoundian does not take Allah's words literally, he is denying that the Quran and Allah's word are valid forever...That is what apostasy is made of, also blasphemy......

The following is a copy of the e-mail that I sent...

Raymond Delisle and Bishop Robert McManus

Dear Sir(s)

It is my understanding that an appearance by Robert Spencer at Worcester Catholic Men’s Conference in Worcester, Massachusetts on March 16 has been canceled. This is troubling news to me. Troubling news in deed. I understand this cancellation is due to the chance that it might cause bad Catholic-Islamic relations. If this is the case, sir, I must ask you if you have been paying any attention to what is, and has been going on in the middle-east and north Africa for centuries. Or for that matter, any where on earth. The persecution of those who believe in Christ is happening at an unbelievable rate world wide. And there seems to be no end in site. It is my feeling that this is happening simply because it is allowed to happen. By not allowing humans all over the world to be informed of what is taking place in places like Egypt, Iran, Indonesia, Malaysia...etc, nothing is being done to stop this persecution. Even in Europe the creeping persecution is rising. That is how it always starts. This is where Mr. Spencer plays into the equation.

Mr. Spencer isn't behind any of the persecutions going on in the world. He simply spreads the word of it. While doing so, he always gives the sources of his information so that any readers of his can check on its authenticity. What Mr. Spencer does is precisely what needs to be done in order to expose this horrible persecution. I would hate to think that you would hinder Mr. Spencers' efforts by caving in to any threats or misleading information from the very establishments that are, in part, responsible for said persecutions. I realize that it could be difficult to not be politically correct at times like these, but imagine how difficult it is living in the middle east or north Africa as a believer in Christ.

Please, sir. I ask that you reconsider your decision to cancel Robert Spencers' appearance at Worcester, Massachusetts on March 16. For the sake of your brothers in the middle east and north Africa if not for the sake of mankind in general. The truth will set us all free.

Thank you for your time, and may God bless you and keep you safe.

Sincerely,

My Name

"....virtually all mainstream media journalists are propagandists for causes rather than objective reporters, so I am not all that surprised."

Isn't that the truth.

"is actually demonizing an entire religion."
Robert never said this but I'm saying it: Islam IS demonic.
I get very tired of that ploy: "You can't condemn an entire religion"! Why not? When the teachings and deeds of a religion are evil it must be condemned.

"“I would have liked for them if they wanted to know about Islam’s view of Christianity to ask a Muslim,” he said of the organizers of the Catholic Men’s Conference."
Of course you would! Just like you'd rather Joseph Goebbels to speak on Nazism rather that Dietrich Bonhoeffer!

As Christians, we're supposed to be "gentle as a lamb, wise as a serpent." Unfortunately, it seems that too many Christians today only get that half right.

The Boston Globe and Diocese of Worcester will both lose credibility with stunts like this.

It was a set-up, a frame-up.

The reporter is obviously witless about Islam. Doesn't know the first thing, but takes this as a 'human rights' issue. The fact that Islam is one of the world's greatest violators of human rights has not crossed her mind.

Islam needs to be denounced, not appeased.

I wrote also:

Gentlemen,

I am writing to urge you to reconsider a recent decision to deny Robert Spencer the opportunity to speak at the annual Catholic Men's Conference in March.

Robert Spencer has dedicated his time and considerable intelligence to studying Islam and teaching the facts about what is written in the Qur'an to those of us who want to know, but have no interest in becoming Muslims. He is an extraordinarily intelligent and principled man, and a credit to his faith. I say that as a Jewish woman who appreciates the spiritual path we all share and the absolute requirement of honesty and integrity.

I have read his blog, Jihadwatch.org, for over two years now and several of his books. In fact, I have learned a tremendous amount from him which has informed my understanding of larger world events.

From what I have seen, he has done this not out of bigotry nor any desire to promote bigotry towards Muslims. Ultimately he is motivated by a desire to see our American freedoms preserved. Yet he is attacked by forces who do not wish us to have an honest conversation about Islam and wish to deny him freedom of expression.

Unfortunately the fact is that there are elements within Islam which conflict frankly with our ideals of equality and freedom. While I appreciate the sensitivities of American Muslims, there are aspects of Islam which many people, even Muslims, agree must be reformed. Nothing will change if you and friends of Muslims don't even know what those things are.

As I might remind you, the Catholic Church has faced controversy from scandals when the Catholic Church sought to deny sad facts. The solutions to these problems came from confronting the very real problems, not from denying they exist.

Silencing Robert Spencer will do nothing to encourage true peace or necessary reform within Islam. I urge you to listen and learn from him.

Sincerely,

How have these so called journalists from MSM become so stupid that they consider quoting from Quaran, Sira and hadith as demonizing to them. Don't Muslims regard these books as their holy books and follow them to no end - upto the poinbt of killing non-Muslims??? Duh!!

Robert,

I know you are busy, and it may or may not be a fruitless trip, but I think you are right - you should just go; seeings how you were never told by them to not come anyway.

And you are right - you may meet some supporters there who invite you to another locale to speak. That would be so cool for you to be speaking on the sidewalk.

Heck - Id invite you to my house - Id love to hear you guys speak. Dont think I can cover the travel expenses - plus my wife gets nervous if we have company over and we haven't cleaned the house well enough :)

Good for you for not backing down. The sad thing is, if this were reversed (a radical Muslim was asked not to speak) they would show up in force, and then launch a lawsuit.

I sent earnest and courteous please to both the Bishop and Mr Delisle and I"m sending a hard copy letter to the bishop. I'll leave Lisa to the American readership....
The Christians churches are a disaster. They collude with the enemy against their own people, slaughtered in the millions all over the Islamic world -- in Nigeria, Algeria, Indonesia, Saudi, Eygypt etc Supporting the Barnabas Fund helps a little.
Where is Pope Leo when you need him? "There is a wild boar in my vineyard!'

This has been one my darkest days of my 71 years as a Roman Catholic. Though some canonist might suggest it's not a matter of 'faith and morals', I would differ. Faith- that upon which we rely; Morals - was Judas' action a virtue? That a pastoral leader would yield to secular influence on behalf of a violence-prone religion is hardly a way to confort an already scandal-ridden community. (Dante would place him where?)
After receiving minor orders, I left my intention of priestly vocation, realizing my homosexuality could well be a future issue.
It's not that I acted out, nor, do I believe - even now - I would. Though, I am 'out' and, a practicing (maybe scrimmaging) Roman Catholic, I was right in my retreat.
Realizing that eventually I, of divided heart, would stand before a community was an 'ethical' breach I could not allow myself. A few years ago, as scandals were amplified, I only thought how glad I am for my decision.
Today we witness a bishop manifest disdain for Vienna, LePanto, Malta,....Jews, Copts, Nestorians, Melchites and those Christian coffessions who still hold highly a regard the "Church".
So, as in the case of old Kosovo's "Field of Crows', Christianity has surrendered again. But this time we succumbed to Islam led by an force of vicioius secullarists.

The German View of Islam

This is by far the best explanation of the Muslim terrorist situation I have ever read. The author of this email is said to be Dr. Emanuel Tanya, a well-known and well-respected psychiatrist. His references to past history are accurate and clear. Not long, easy to understand, and well worth the read.

A German's View on Islam

A man, whose family was German aristocracy prior to World War II, owned a number of large industries and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism. 'Very few people were true Nazis,' he said, 'but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost control, and the end of the world had come. My family lost everything. I ended up in a concentration camp and the Allies destroyed my factories.'

We are told again and again by 'experts' and 'talking heads' that Islam is the religion of peace and that the vast majority of Muslims just want to live in peace. Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to make us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish the specter of fanatics rampaging across the globe in the name of Islam.

The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history. It is the fanatics who march. It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50 shooting wars worldwide. It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter Christian or tribal groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking over the entire continent in an Islamic wave. It is the fanatics who bomb, behead, murder, or honor-kill. It is the fanatics who take over mosque after mosque. It is the fanatics who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals. It is the fanatics who teach their young to kill and to become suicide bombers.

The hard, quantifiable fact is that the peaceful Muslim majority, the 'silent majority,' is cowed and extraneous.

Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant. China 's huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people.

The average Japanese individual prior to World War II was not a warmongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians -- most killed by sword, shovel, and bayonet.
And who can forget Rwanda , which collapsed into butchery. Could it not be said that the majority of Rwandans were 'peace loving'?

History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt, yet for all our powers of reason, we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of points:

#1 -- Peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant by their silence.

#2 -- Peace-loving Muslims will become our enemy if they don't speak up, because like my friend from Germany , they will awaken one day and find that the fanatics own them, and the end of their world will have begun.

#3 -- Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghans, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many others have died because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it was too late. As for us who watch it all unfold, we must pay attention to the only group that counts--the fanatics who threaten our way of life.

#4 -- Lastly, anyone who doubts that the issue is serious, is contributing to the passiveness that allows the problems to expand.

"Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway" - Regan

When a post-modern light-weight like Wangsness reads a verbatim quote, she will respond with 'That's just YOUR OPINION!'

But this is the point, mademoiselle, A VERBATIM QUOTE from the Koran or any other A-1 Islamic source text is NOT 'just my opinion'...it is a the EXACT WORDS OF AUTHORITATIVE ISLAM.

When you put dozens of these texts together along with the authentic, canonical interpretations of major Islamic authorities, you have a CONSENSUS. When the leading Islamic authorities agree on a point, it is no longer open to interpretation.

Wangsness needs to study this basic point of CONSENSUS. Jihad is warfare against infidels to establish Sharia law.

Jihad does not mean working out at the gym.

Jihad is unfriendly.

OT

Hey, guys, I heard a good one last night. Commenting on the Iranians sending a monkey into space, and scoffing at their interest in space exploration, Dennis Miller said on The O'Reilly Factor:

"The muslims will be interested in going to the moon the day after the Jews set up Israel there."

I loved it!

Yeah Robert, please go to this thing anyway. I promise that if you do I will fly up there (not a long haul) and video whatever talk you give and re-start my youtube account and post the video.

Every single reader of this blog ought to write a letter to the diocese and to the Globe condeming the censorship of Robert Spencer's ideas.
Robert, I hope you do set up a speaking site in close proximity to the Conference locus. If you do I pledge to send you $50 to help defray expenses (even though I think your politics are sometimes silly).

It was like wetting one's pants in a dark suit: It gave me a warm feeling, but no one noticed.

Haha...You know how that goes, 'no matter how you shake________...' Well, you and a billion other men can fill in the blanks...

Exactly what part(s) of Robert's politics are 'silly'?

Go anyway, Robert. You owe it to your fellow infidels, i.e. uninformed Catholic men, to warn and advise them. Obviously, the Church cannot be relied upon to protect and defend its own. It is heroes like you who must shoulder that cross. It's a tough and perilous road, but the potential recompense is great.

This is what we call a "heckler's veto". I have heard Robert Spencer speak many times to audiences like the Worcester Catholic Men’s Conference. He is not "harmful". The problem isn't Spencer, the problem is that Islam as taught and practiced in most of the world is at "war" and not at "peace" with the West with both machine guns and media. Any speaker with the boldness to address the false impressions created by Islamic propagandists would likewise be labeled a "hater".

Thank you, Omid Safi. You have shown how a flippant, out-of-context quote is the best you can do to find a moral equivalence between Qur'an and Gospel.

"This not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me...and he that taketh not his cross and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. he that findeth ihs life ahll lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it." (Mt. 10:34-39).

How this works out we see in how the apostles and others who followed Jesus were persecuted. Hence, when Jesus uses the word "sword", he is giving a very vivid image of how he is the cause of division and controversy--not commanding that we strike off the heads of the unbelievers.

And, as for bearing the cross, as the readers of the Gospels know, this was something a condemned criminal was made to do."For he [Jesus] was reckoned with the transgressors", says Isaiah 53, and this is echoed in the Gospel accounts of the crucifixion. Further, Jesus being reckoned with the transgressors goes further in that he, the Just One, gave his life as the penal substitute for sinners, something we recall every time we receive communion.

Paul tells us that the death of Jesus Christ on the cross was "scandal to Jews and folly to Greeks [pagans]" in First Corinthians. Hence, the division of which Jesus spoke was evident in the first generation of his followers from among both Jews and Greeks (for Paul and the other apostles did have their followings).

So, too, will those who follow Jesus be [unfairly] "reckoned with the transgressors".

Finally, I will readily admit that it is passages such as Mt. 10:34ff. that lead me to conclude that Jesus was either a dangerous lunatic or God Incarnate (for, given the latter choice, no-one less would have the right to make such claims). I suppose most here know on which side of the debate I stand.

Shafi does nothing to refute Spencer's ample documentation of how Qur'an and Hadith are a manual for warlords, robbers, and supremacists.

Hawy wrote:

This move by the Catholic organisation is not surprising, the core canonical texts of their creed contains beliefs that are only dissimilar to a certain degree with the Islamic injuctions...
............................

Uh...right. And that's why Catholics are waging violent terror in the name of their faith everyday—oh, wait—they aren't. That would be pious Muslims waging violent Jihad.

Robert Spencer is himself a devout Melkite Catholic—that is, in fact, why he was originally slated to address a conference of Catholic men.

Papa Whiskey wrote:

Nearly seven years ago, I resigned my position as assistant editorial page editor at the East Valley Tribune of Mesa, Arizona, in protest over my putative superiors' refusal to print any of the Danish Muhammad cartoons with an op-ed piece I had written about the "cartoon jihad" -- which, it is now clear, was the opening salvo of Islam against free speech in the West...
..............................

I know you have written about this before, Papa Whiskey. You are a very principled man.

I just hope you have been able to remain in journalism in some capacity—we need, brave, well-informed voices like yours.

You are certainly entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts, pal. Good grief. Please educate yourself before posting or forever be known here as a complete dunce. Yea sites like Loonwatch or HuffPo may be more to your liking; since the Truth about islam and company are not what they're about. You'll have better luck promoting your garbage there, not here.

correction:

Please educate yourself before posting or forever be known here as a complete LIAR.

My email to the Globe newspaper:

Bigotry in Boston

Ms L Wangsness,

How clever of you to organise the cancellation of Robert Spencer’s visit.

I want to ask you if you carry out the same investigations on behalf of your newspaper with such zeal when radical Muslim clerics visit your area to proselytise at universities and other public gatherings or is your main agenda one of political correctness where Muslims must not be criticised and anyone who does is an Islamophobe?

Ever heard of free speech?

TG

London

I'll answer you if aand only if you match my pledge of $50 to defray RS's expenses.
