Egypt gives military the power to arrest civilians

Cementing the Muslim Brotherhood in power and moving to break all resistance to its Sharia tyranny. "BREAKING: Egypt army granted right to arrest civilians," by Joseph Mayton for Bikya News, January 28 (thanks to C. Cantoni):

CAIRO: The Egyptian government gave the armed forces the authority to arrest civilians on Monday, local media have reported a source from the cabinet as saying.

It comes as violence continues on Cairo’s Nile River corniche between police and protesters near Tahrir Square.

The move to grant the military the ability to arrest civilians is not likely to go over well with activists, especially after thousands of Egyptians were tried in military courts following the removal of Hosni Mubarak from power in February 2012 and the military rule of the country that lasted until President Mohamed Morsi was sworn into power in June last year.

The latest violence follows the announcement of a state of emergency by President Mohamed Morsi in all Suez Canal cities for 30 days after days of violence has left over 45 people dead in Port Said, Suez and Ismaileya.

“As you all know, I have previously affirmed I am against any exceptional measures but I also affirmed I will take action. And here I am taking action, to stop the bloodshed and maintain security, against rioters and law breakers,” Morsi stated, addressing the nation in a televised speech.

Morsi imposed curfew in Port Said, Suez, and Ismaileya from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. during the 30-day state of emergency.

The president said that the revolution has deviated from its peaceful course.

He saluted policemen and the Armed Forces and extended his condolences to all Egyptians for all the lives lost during the past few days.

On Monday, as Egypt awoke to the smell of tear gas across downtown Cairo, police and protesters were continuing to fight along the same bridge that marked the morning of January 28, 2011, as violence has overtaken the country in the past four days.

January 28 is expected to be another day of battles as Egyptians appear to be refusing to relent on their demands for change. With Muslim Brotherhood Morsi refusing to acquiesce, the country is bracing for days more of violence. In honor of January 28, 2011, which was dubbed “Friday of Rage” Egyptian activists have issued a statement that includes their demands.

"The Muslim Brotherhood will have a significant role to play in post-Mubarak Egypt. And that is good thing." -- U.S. clown Reza Aslan

Who is this Mohamadan Aslan? His published opinions strike me as eerily reminiscent of the evil Nazi party enablers and apparatchiks during the run-up to WW2. The type of cretin who then will claim “I was only following orders”. It was not the average German soldier of that period who was complicit of the “Crimes of the Century”. It was rather bottom feeders like this creep, the ideologues of insanity and evil. Max.

I read articles in that Aslan writes for the Was Post, usually he gets his Ass(lan) handed to him on a platter by the bloggers who are not as gullible and stupid as he thinks they are!

.................

And so, the slide towards the imposing of brutal Shari'ah continues in Egypt.

And the vicious Muslim Brotherhood will make Mubarak look like a cream puff in comparison.

This has happened many times before, where an authoritarian has been ousted, only to have a much greater tyranny set up in its place.

Tsarist brutality being replaced with Stalinist savagery is one example—the Chines Nationalists falling to Mao is another, and—most saliently in this context—the authoritarian Shah falling to the bloody and oppressive Ayatollahs.

As I've stated here before at JW, Mubarak is looking better and better. Understand, I wouldn't want to live under a Mubarak-type ruler, no way at all, but the fact that such an authoritarian looks good in comparison to what has replaced him serves as a very effective condemnation of what Islam unleashed can do to the population of any country.

Dictators and semi-dictators are not my cup of tea. Not by a long shot since I'm an American through and through and esteem what the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights stand for, three documents which are antithetical to Islam in its entirety even though Islam, in typical parasitic fashion, would use such documents to eventually eviscerate such documents. (Damn you for all time for this, Islam.)

Compared to Islam if it gets its way, the standard secular authoritarian looks pretty damn good. If this isn't a condemnation of the monstrosity which is Islam, I'd be most interested in what is. Any takers out there, including the trolls who post here at JW attempting in their mischievous, deceptive, profoundly ignorant kinds of way, who want to prove me wrong? Go ahead, give it a shot. I say you can't. Prove me wrong, turkeys. Dare ya'.

Islam or liberty. Can't have both. The choice is this stark. Guaranteed.

Trouble in an Islamic paradise? Quelle suprise! The Muslims will never have a caliphate because they are barbarians and by nature no more governable than feral dogs. And not nearly as noble.

Even der ol professor sees the writing on the wall.

" Morsi made himself highly unpopular with more centrist or secular-minded voters by rushing the completion of a constitution late last fall, then putting it to a referendum even though the judges went on strike in protest. The constitution is not a consensus document. Massive demonstrations were staged against him all over the country. Things had quietened down until last Friday’s two-year commemoration of the revolution.

It seems unlikely that the crowds can get rid of Morsi through street protests. He has lots of supporters, and he won the election fair and square last June.

On the other hand, many non-Brotherhood parties are beginning announce that they will boycott the parliamentary elections to be held this spring. They are calling on Morsi to call new presidential elections first and saying he has lost his legitimacy.
Egypt continues to ratchet toward polarization.

Wellington - You are correct. Despite the fact that there are decent Muslims, the inherent backwardness, intolerance and irrationality of Islam guarantees misery and cruelty for many for the foreseeable future.
I believe that the only thing that stopped an expansionist Islam in the past was Christendom. A reinvigorated Christendom is the only antidote now.
Puc Canada

This was always the problem w/ the Sharansky Doctrine, which was endorsed by both Bush & Netenyahu. Its underlying assumption is fallacious - that Muslims want the freedom to live peacefully with their neighbors. They want freedom all right, but since as Hugh used to point out, 'Live and let live' was never a central tenet in Islam, freedom for Muslims implies the freedom to be intolerant and hateful not just of Infidels, but also of other Muslims of different sects.

This explains why we see civil wars in all these Islamic countries. Normally, one would think everyone would be happy since Islam is being officially endorsed from top to bottom, and they are used to it micro-managing every aspect of their lives. But whenever a country declares itself an Islamic republic, what it means is that the Islam of the dominant sect is the one that is endorsed, and everything else is heresy. So in Saudi Arabia, the Wahabis define what is Islam, and all other Muslims fall by the wayside. In Syria, the Alawites, the Shia and Druze know this, which is why they are battling the Sunnis, who will wipe them out if they take power. If a country is more or less homogeneous, such as Egypt, Libya or Somalia, then there will be other pretexts for conflict, rather than this one.

I agree w/ you about Mubarak. Ironically, the same was true about the US enemies, such as Saddam, Gaddafi and Assad. Yeah, it didn't help that they were allies of the Soviets, but then, it also didn't help that the US befriended some of the worst jihadis out there, such as the Saudis and Afghans.

This IS Islam. Two years from the glorious spring and this is the progress. Economic disaster. Social chaos. Draconian state power. Collapse of the state.

Meanwhile those gratis F-16's keep on a comin'. Better than an Obama phone I guess.

Egypt's Defense Minister: Egypt could Collapse
by Annie Lubin & Gil Ronen Egypt's Defense Minister: Egypt could Collapse

Egyptian Defense Minister Gen. Abdel Fatah al-Sisi warned Tuesday that Egypt could be facing collapse.

Al-Sisi explained that military units have been stationed in cities next to the Suez Canal, where riots have broken out, in order to protect the canal.

"The continuing conflict between political forces and their differences concerning the management of the country could lead to a collapse of the state and threaten future generations," Al-Sisi said in a speech to army cadets that was also quoted on the Egyptian military spokesman's Facebook page. Sisi said the country's economic, political and social challenges signify "a real threat to the security of Egypt and the cohesiveness of the Egyptian state".

Some see Sisi's statement as an attempt to remind Egyptians about the power of the military and as a veiled threat to opposition forces.

"And so, the slide towards the imposing of brutal Shari'ah continues in Egypt."

Sure as rain, Egypt is on a long slide. Combine collapsed tourism, economic stagnation, and burgeoning population, and you have a hell of an Allah disaster looming. How many years, decades, will this last? With MB's Sharia, I'd say well into the next century. Egypt's 'golden age' ended with Pharaonic, and later Christian, Egypt overrun by Islam. It's been a long slide since, accelerating down a black hole vortex. Now it gets really ugly. But obviously it is Allah's will, to destroy civilizations.

................................

True, BoT. One of the most absurd canards of the "Arab Spring" was that the revolution was all about improving the Egyptian economy and improving opportunities for youth.

Of course, the tourism industry and foreign investment collapsed almost immediately. If post-revolution Egypt had been any sort of even vaguely sane polity, they could have turned that around by now—instead, every step toward Shari'ah just makes Westerners stay away in droves.

Egypt is much, much worse off economically than it was before the revolution.

But then, that is true of every Muslim state that imposes Shari'ah—with small exceptions for states swimming in unearned oil wealth, such as Saudi Arabia.

Don't be surprised if there is pressure for the US and other Western nations to increase their "foreign aid" because Egypt has screwed things up so badly, and we wouldn't want them to have to suffer any of the predictable consequences...

................................

And the only reason that Egypt had even a vague gloss of civilization in recent decades was the faint, lingering effects of British and French influence.

But the last vestiges of such influence have been swept away with the "Arab Spring", which is starting to smell anything but springlike two years in...

"But the last vestiges of such influence have been swept away with the "Arab Spring", which is starting to smell anything but springlike two years in..."

The only positive from this 'Arab Spring' is it's self-canceling dynamics. Revolution in Islam means more Islam, which means Sharia, which further degrades social developments, which further aggravates the polity, which further disappoints the people, which then calls for more severe Islam, which means total Sharia, etc. It's a death spiral, which taken to final conclusion means the death of Islam. How long will it take? What form will this death take? Only Allah knows, as in their minds it's all his will anyway, so no effort will be made to reverse the death spiral. What lies in its wake is death and destruction, until total self induced extinction. Maybe that's how this primitive regressive theo-ideology is meant to die... We'll just have to wait and see. But in the end, it all cancels out into "check mate", and Islam dies. We can wait, no worries. But it will be ugly, as it won't die easy.
