No. The US had fought back against Japan's military for four long years by 1945, and Japan would not stop attacking us.

Your positing that it is possible to wage defensive war while only targeting the exact perpetrators sets a completely impossible standard, by which no one could ever fight back against aggressive attack—which, no doubt, is your intent here.
