Iran reiterated Saturday its threats that any attack on Syria would be perceived as one on the Islamic Republic and will meet "a harsh response."
Tehran's IRNA news agency quoted Defense Minister Brigadier-General Ahmad Vahidi as saying that Syrian Army, which is "the vanguard of campaign against Zionist regime should not be weakened."

Iran has been Syrian President Bashar Assad's strongest allay since Syria plunged into civil war.

Tehran has supplied Damascus with funds, weapons and training; and has repeatedly vowed to send its army to Assad's aid should any attempt be made by the West to topple his regime.

The threats have become more strident following NATO's decision to send Patriot missile batteries to Turkey, which fears the civil war tearing its neighbor apart may morph into a war between them.

The first of six Patriot missile batteries placed near the Turkish-Syrian border went operational on Saturday.

Vahidi told reporters that "The Syrian crisis should be resolved through peaceful means and national dialogue between the warring parties."

He denounced any attempt to hasten said solution by the West, saying that "Any alien interference has so far brought only harmful consequences for the Syrian people.

"The Syrian problems have roots in covert and overt interference of the Zionists," he said adding that "Iran has always adopted a rational stand toward Syria."

Commenting on the Patriot deployment in Turkey, Vahidi said that "The move is not useful. We believe it will create misunderstanding among countries in the region.

"Enemies try to sow discord among Islamic states through masterminding various scenarios," he said....

It might not work out so well for Iran's Shi'ite jockeying in the region if they were to blame the pious Sunnis.

Grimly hilarious. Why blame the pious Sunnis when it is so much more convenient to blame da Joooooos?

Also grimly laughable, since one of the complaints of the Mujihadeen opposition is that Syria hasn't gone after Israel enough.

The "roots" are the same as in the rest of the "Arab Spring" countries—a massive Islamic revival—in this case, of the Sunni variety.

And the idea that the repulsive "Islamic Republic of Iran" has always adopted a "rational" stand toward Syria is ludicrous—unless what they mean by that is treating Syria like its "bitch" in exchange for some support and using it to launch Hizb'allah against Isreal.

Really, this is just "Jihadist vs. Jihadist" at this point.

Well, I certainly hope so, someone needs to keep Islam in check lest it runs amuck...
What the enemies of Islam need are more and better scenarios...Islam should be pummeled and battered by never ending scenarios, until it retreats into it's cage and the final scenario slams shut the door...after that, it's just maintenance...

Y'know, it occurs to me to wonder whether he's projecting.

I cannot give a reference, but somewhere I recall reading, or hearing, that one of the main Mohammedan tactics against the Infidels is 'split the camp'.

What happens if we rewrite the above statement?

"Muslims try to sow discord among non-Muslim states [or, alternatively
simply 'among non-Muslims'] through masterminding various scenarios..."?

It might be worth some historian's while to look very, very closely at, say, the type and mode of Mohammedan involvement with/ influence upon all non-Muslim parties in the Cold War ['Free World', 'Communist bloc' 'Non-Aligned Bloc'], and Mohammedan involvement with/ influence upon the various non-Muslim participants in the two World Wars, with one question in mind: in what way were Mohammedans, by participating in those conflicts/ allying themselves with this or that side of the conflict (and in all three conflicts there were Mohammedans on *either* side), seeking to further the Cause of Islam and foment / exacerbate/ profit from division/s within the Camp of the Infidels? And how far did they succeed?
