BEIRUT (AP) — Israel conducted a rare airstrike on a military target inside Syria, foreign officials and Syrian state TV said Wednesday, amid fears President Bashar Assad's regime is providing weapons to the Islamic militant group Hezbollah.
A statement from the Syrian military read aloud on state TV confirmed the strike, saying the jets bombed a military research center in the area of Jamraya, northwest of the capital, Damascus.

The statement said the center was responsible for "raising the level of resistance and self-defense" of Syria's military. It said the strike destroyed the center and a nearby building, killing two workers and wounding five others.

U.S. and regional security officials reported the strike earlier Wednesday but did not say exactly where it took place.

Regional security officials said Israel had been planning in the days leading up to the airstrike to hit a shipment of weapons bound for Hezbollah, Lebanon's most powerful military force. Among Israeli officials' chief fears is that Assad will pass chemical weapons or sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles to Hezbollah — something that could change the balance of power in the region and greatly hinder Israel's ability to conduct air sorties in Lebanon.

The regional officials said the shipment Israel was planning to strike included Russian-made SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles, which would be strategically "game-changing" in the hands of Hezbollah by enabling the group to carry out fiercer attacks on Israel and shoot down Israeli jets, helicopters and surveillance drones.

Hezbollah has committed to Israel's destruction and has gone to war against the Jewish state in the past.

A U.S. official confirmed the strike, saying it hit a convoy of trucks....

Unbelievable. Assad's regime is fight for its life against "Islamist" rebels, but here they are taking time out to ensure that Hizb'allah can continue to kill Jews.

This reminds me of fanatical Nazis, who were continuing to kill Jews even when they could hear the approaching allied tanks.

Of course, it may be that Assad is acting to counter rebel claims that he is "weak" on slaughtering Jews, and that they'd do a much better job of it...

Bravo, Israel! Doing what needs to be done to safeguard her people.

And some of those chemical weapons may be those that were seen spirited into Syria from Saddam Hussein's Iraq at the beginning of the Second Gulf War ten years ago.

Actually, Syria—and their "patron", Iran—have been supplying weapons to Hizb'allah since the beginning. Hizb'allah is a creature of Iran and Syria.

But I presume Syria was shipping heavier weaponry to Hizb'allah this toime, which represented a greater than usual threat to Israel and her people.

Notice that the Lebanese army is no longer "Lebanon's most powerful military force"—nor has it been so for some time. Poor Lebanon—formerly the most civilized country in the Middle East after Israel—has long since become Syria's "bitch", and little more than a launching ground for violent Jihad against Israel.

It's interesting to note here the kinetic [that currently trendy word now used for "force"] interest by the Israeli's in seeking out WMD's in Syria.

It should be pointed out, yet again, that these WMD's inside Syria are probably directly related, developmentally related, physically related to those WMD's [gasp!] "not found" in Iraq and so gleefully seized upon and amplified at every opportunity by the liberal media to fortify their propaganda that there were none inside Iraq to begin with.

What arrant, spun nonsense.

Saddam had used these poison gas WMD's against the Kurds; had made open acknowledgements of his wanting to acquire nuclear WMD's and.....interestingly, vehicle convoys were spotted heading towards the Iraqi/Syrian border across those vast open sandy reaches of desert. [...pretty neat hiding opportunities for those WMD's not able to make it across that Syrian border, n'est-ce pas?]

Now that we have a different administration ensconced in Washington, lo!.....we notice interest in Israeli attacks against supplies of WMD's inside Syria?

Hmmmm.
