Modern, moderate, Turkey: Muslim protesters burn flag, demand expulsion of U.S. troops from Turkey over rumor of Qur'an desecration

Turksirked.jpgThe Turks are irked, the Turks are irked -- what kind of jerk would irk the Turks?

Thought this kind of thing only happened in strongholds of Islamic supremacist fury such as Pakistan and Afghanistan? Think again. Anyway, as for the expulsion of U.S. troops from Turkey, sounds like a great idea to me.

"Turkish protesters condemn US forces over mosque attack," from Islamic Invitation Turkey, January 13 (thanks to Joshua):

People have taken to the streets in southern Turkey to condemn US forces based in the country over reports that the soldiers desecrated Islam.

The protest was held on Saturday in the province of Adana, home to the Incirlik Air Base, where US troops are stationed.

The demonstrators demanded that the culprits be identified and punished. They also called for the expulsion of the US troops from Turkey.

The rally came after reports that a group of drunk US soldiers broke the windows of a mosque and destroyed copies of the Qur’an on New Year’s Eve.

Yeah, that's about as likely to have happened as a visit from Santa Claus to the same mosque.

The Adana Governor’s office is said to have launched an investigation into the allegations.

The Turkish military denies the sacrilegious move was committed by US troops.

Not sure why Robert thinks it so impossible that a few troops could have gone off the rails. Perhaps he knows something about how U.S. troops are supervised in Turkey that I don't. But given the fact that many soldiers are Christian and will have learned about the horrors Islam is perpetrating today against Christians around the globe, and given that many soldiers are young men and a little wild still, and that among the hundreds of troops it would only take a few prone to go off the rails, and given the hostility to the troops from some Turks, it doesn't seem impossible that a few U.S. troops could have managed to get drunk on a night off and mess with Qur'ans or a mosque. Granted, it seems more likely that Muslims are inventing crimes. But why should it be impossible that a few U.S. troops misbehaved?

Drunk American soldiers always break into mosques and destroy Qurans...Happens all the time...The Mahoundians don't need to get upset, it was just a bunch of wild and crazy guys having fun...

Miriam Rove, we're the people whom everyone loves to hate. Today, it's Islamicists in Turkey; yesterday it was Marxists all over Western Europe (including all those "independent" Marxists from Saxony, East Berlin, Mecklenburg, and the rump of Silesia whom West Germany allowed in after they fell afoul of the dominant brand of Communists).

This is why I hope your son gets to come home permanently soon and take up a useful life. I've seen Turkey sucker us into backing the Syrian rebels, just as Italy and France suckered us into backing the Libyan ones (and are now in the process of getting us involved up to our armpits in Mali). This is no "great game" against some major, exisential threat, but a bunch of inherently unstable countries falling back into a Hobbesian state of nature.

America's messianic foreign policy has failed, failed, failed, and its time we simply re-assessed our place in a world in which history is bound to happen, whether we like it or not.

Kepha, you said

America's messianic foreign policy has failed, failed, failed,

I take it you mean our foreign policy in the Muslim world. Because elsewhere we have had tremendous successes -- as in turning Germany and Japan into liberal democracies after World War II.

Our foreign policy in the Islamic world has failed, because we have not understood Islamic culture quickly enough. Thus too many leaders do not understand that Islam is a totalitarian system. Many thus thought we could liberalize Iraq and Afghanistan in a sustained way, even after allowing Sharia law a central place in the new constitutions of those countries. Once we allowed sharia into those constitutions, nation-building became a huge waste of blood and treasure. But we could not keep sharia out of the Islamic world in any event -- it's not a small nation like Germany or Japan; it's vast, and there is not the political will or consensus to attempt it at this time. Even if there were, Islam would of course be a far more difficult dragon to tame than Shinto in Japan.

Kepha, the U.S. will not be ' up to its armpits in Mali '. It will likely barely get its toes wet.
France will provide its troops, the U.K. and Canada are providing heavy air transport, other African nations are providing troops to support the Malians and the French etc.
It is critical to stop the islamist fanatics from taking over Mali; Mali is a traditional French area of influence, and they are doing the heavy lifting.
The U.S. will barely be involved, if at all.
