Obama claims U.S. in Afghanistan has "come very close to achieving our central goal, which is to de-capacitate al Qaeda, to dismantle them"

Al-Qaeda is "carving out its own state" in Mali, is operating with apparent impunity in Libya, and its friends and allies the Taliban are on the offense in Afghanistan itself, as well as in Pakistan, and this clown is claiming victory.

"Obama, Karzai accelerate end of U.S. combat role in Afghanistan," by Matt Spetalnick for Reuters, January 12:

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai agreed on Friday to speed up the handover of combat operations in Afghanistan to Afghan forces, raising the prospect of an accelerated U.S. withdrawal from the country and underscoring Obama's determination to wind down a long, unpopular war.

Signaling a narrowing of differences, Karzai appeared to give ground in talks at the White House on U.S. demands for immunity from prosecution for any American troops who stay in Afghanistan beyond 2014, a concession that could allow Obama to keep at least a small residual force there....

Asked whether the cost of the war in lives and money was worth it, Obama said: "We achieved our central goal ... or have come very close to achieving our central goal, which is to de-capacitate al Qaeda, to dismantle them, to make sure that they can't attack us again."...

"One of the reasons the United States will continue a limited presence in Afghanistan after 2014 in certain facilities in Afghanistan is because we have decided together to continue to fight against al Qaeda," Karzai said. "So there will be no respite in that."...

Obama claims U.S. in Afghanistan has "come very close to achieving our central goal, which is to de-capacitate al Qaeda, to dismantle them"

De-capacitate this, jug-ears.

O'bungle lost his glasses, and threw away his hearing aids, so now he is just "eye candy" for the view.

Fine, so bring them home already. Osama is dead, fighting Islam was never a stated goal, so what are we doing there? Bring them home and call it a victory, if that's what you prefer.

Somehow, the Leftists are all for supporting the counter-Jihad in Mali - which totally shocks me. Just b'cos the Mali Jihadis weren't careful enough to put off desecration of heritage sites until after they seized complete power?

'De-capacitate' is an odd choice of word, indeed. . Rather unsettling. Hmm

We are being lied to about Afghanistan. Lara Logan, an investigated journalist, the same one who was attacked in Egypt, gave a talk which everyone should see. http://www.humanevents.com/2012/10/13/lara-logan-on-al-qaeda-in-afghanistan-i-knew-we-were-being-lied-i-knew-american-people-were-being-misled-video/

Two points
1. In a another transparent attempt to denigrate the POTUS, RS neglected to include the following words spoken by Obama, words which would tend to contradict RS's suggestion that Obama considers that there has been am Obama redux of the absurd George Bush victory cry "mission accomplished."
Obama added: "Have we achieved everything that some might have imagined us achieving in the best of scenarios? Probably not. This is a human enterprise, and you fall short of the ideal."
The omission of just this one qualifying Presidential sentence when otherwise quoting from the Reuters article at great length again reveals a willingness by RS to engage in slanted editorializing to bash Obama.

2. I am not sure I would agree with RS's assessment of the situations in Mali or Libya, but I tend to agree that after NATO/US ground troops leave it is likely that Afghanistan will be overrun by the Taliban or some other Islamic analogue. Like RS, I think the US foreign policy vis a vis Afghanistan has been flawed from before 9/11 when we supported and armed the Taliban antecedents, the Islamic jihadis fighting Soviet colonialism, through to post 9/11 when we failed to bomb back to the stone age all potential military Afghanistan installations and facilities...along with any of the actual Taliban governmental political leaders, the aiders and abbetors of 9/11, whether in their office, mosque or home. I trust I have my myself clear on that issue.

More importantly, whether or not you agree with RS on the inaccuracy of these Obama remarks assessing the US achievements on the war against Al Qaida, the Taliban, or creeping Islam in general, do they have any real significance in comparison to the desirability of the actual foreign policy Obama is executing, i.e. the rapid US troop withdrawl from Afghanistan? To his credit Obama is terminating a horrible foreign policy instituted by his predecessors (Dick Cheney and his puppets).

The bottom line is that the US is finally putting an end to the waste of human lives and taxpayer money in Afghanistan by getting the US out of that hellhole (as much as realistically possible and/or practicable and/or sensible). This is a policy that RS has continuously advocated for a long time. What I don't understand is why RS would now vilify the Obama administration for doing exactly what RS has advocated be done?
Can someone help me understand this seeming contradiction?
