Iranian ayatollahs condemn internet provider for undermining Islam and encouraging immorality

How do you put an internet provider to death? Still more evidence of the desperate insecurity and authoritarian mindset of Islamic supremacism. "Iranian ayatollahs issue fatwa against 3G internet provider," by Adi Robertson for The Verge, February 20 (thanks to Twostellas):

Four Iranian ayatollahs have condemned mobile internet provider RightTel for undermining the country's religious foundation and encouraging immorality. Al Monitor reports that RighTel, which holds exclusive rights to 3G coverage in Iran, has been the subject of a fatwa by each ayatollah. "The decadence and corruption associated with [Rightel’s] use outweighs its benefits," writes Ayatollah Nasser Makarem-Shirazi, previously known for issuing a fatwa against domesticated dogs that led Iran to ban pet advertisements. A site whose name translates to "RighTel Mirage" has also posted notices from Grand Ayatollahs Ja'far Sobhani, Hosein Noori Hamadani, and Seyyed Muhammad Ali Alavi Gorgani.
The site, which also includes comments from other hardliners who oppose RighTel, says it's not anti-technology, just decrying the company's application of it. Political cartoons hosted there suggest that access to mobile internet will encourage pornography viewing, and Ghorgani has said it will "jeopardize the public chastity." A particular concern is video calling, which could allow men and women to speak to each other without oversight. Iran, however, has also gone to great lengths to stop online speech that could threaten its legitimacy or offend citizens. Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei previously ran afoul of filtering measures while trying to condemn anti-filtering tools, and the country is said to be launching its own domestic internet this year.

When you read an article like this, it tends to reinforce the argument that Islam is not headed for the trash heap of history first and foremost because it's heinous (though it is of course) but rather, coming in at #1, because it's ridiculous, e.g., the contention by this Ghorgani turkey that RightTel will "jeopardize the public chastity." WTF!

Personally, I'm not all that partial one way or another what will eventually prove to be the top reason why Islam becomes an ideological corpse, a cul-de-sac dead end, but the absurdity of Islam as reason number one for its demise simply can't be dismissed out of hand, I would contend.

Well, if Islam is laughed out of existence, rather than being "terminated" for other reasons, who of those who prize liberty and other good things that Islam stands against, e.g., equality under the law between Muslims and non-Muslims, should care all that much? I don't, but I'm still intrigued, just for betting reasons, intellectual curiosity and all that.

That's a great point, Traeh, but I have to take issue with Miriam Rove's constant inputs that the "average" Iranian is fed-up with islam and the mullahs:

I would like to believe in MR's optimism that islam is a dieing creed in Iran (as he reports from his family in Iran), but the facts tell us otherwise.

So what is the truth, Miriam, are the Persians going to stand up and retake their nation from the zombie mullahs and the yoke of islam, or continue to be the sheep to the slaughter?

I'm not trying to bust your balzz, MR, I just want a straight up analysis of the situation in Iran.

My bet is laughed out of existence. I'm a big believer in the power of mockery and satire. When you poke fun at the weak points in anything, be it a philosophy or political or religious ideology, it's difficult to ignore, and impossible to "counter punch".

If someone says "Islam is evil, Christianity is the way", or "American values are superior to Islamic", then possible angry counter-arguments spring to every mind, arguments that sound pretty damn good! But a little mockery? Cartoons like the smoking martyrs being turned away from paradise because they're "all out of virgins"? How can a Muslim "counter-punch" that? IMO they can't, and the demonstrated anger is precisely because such mockery is so effective. It makes Muslims sitting on the fence sit up and really think, "This IS kinda stupid, isn't it?"

When someone chooses to make comedy out of something instead of "angrily" attacking it, it makes the "comedian" look more secure and calm and knowledgeable, and hard to ignore. And those who put out fatwas on such satirists can't help but look like scared violent jerks.

I'm afraid I have to agree with you, Boneshack.

Much as respect miriam otherwise—and I really do—and much as I'd love to credit his vision of a largely secular Iran ready to laugh the Mullahs out of power, I just don't see it.

Right now, Iran is not only horribly abusing its own people under Shari'ah, but is waging a vicious proxy war against Israel with their backing of Hizb'allah and Hamas.

And they are poised to become a nuclear power. Will the Iranian people protest when they make good their threat to "wipe Israel off the map"?

Even the opposition in 2009 was not exactly opposed to Islam—they chose green as their rallying color and screamed "Allahu Akbar" at rallies, just like the Revolutionary Guard.

But even if we choose to see them as some sort of genuine democratic counter movement, they were swiftly crushed by the Mullahs, and there has been no sign of unrest since.

I do believe that members of the well-educated urban middle class there—especially in places like Tehran—gripe about the Mullahs and flout bans on alcohol and that sort of thing. But this is light years from actually opposing the Islamic Republic of Iran on ideological terms.

So—while I believe miriam and others who claim the Iranian people are going to send the Mullahs packing any day now are being quite honest as they see it, I've also come to believe that this is nothing more than wishful thinking.

God knows, I wish that I was wrong.

Do these Grand Ayatollahs Ja'far Sobhani, Hosein Noori Hamadani, and Seyyed Muhammad Ali Alavi Gorgani. Practice what they preach, or just condem what others do?

My Bible tells me that immorality is evil in nature whether by thoughts or actions. And what we eat or eat with is not immorality.

I quote:

Matthew 15:19-20
For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.”

I ask if Islam defiles God regularly, but because they concider themselves so special it is able to forgive itself? If so then Islam must concider itself Godly.

Should I also give the defination of blasphemy?

Above, Miriam said that many trendy young folks in Iran sneak off to orgies.

It should be noted that there are also others - in their late teens, twenties, thirties, middle aged - who are ...converting to Christianity, listening in to Farsi-language Christian radio broadcasts, and sneaking off to secret meetings of the Underground Church.

The mullahs have been arresting them and throwing them in prison, but this doesn't seem to have deterred them much.
