Robert Spencer on Egypt: Free People Not Going Quietly Into the Night

EgyptNotGoingQuietly.jpg

Over at FrontPage I discuss the ongoing demonstrations in Egypt, and the consistency that runs through Obama's responses to all the uprisings we have seen in Muslim countries in recent years:

Survey after survey, as well as the election results that put the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohammed Morsi in the presidential palace, show that most Egyptians want Islamic law. But those who do not are not submitting quietly to Sharia tyranny.

Morsi has declared a state of emergency and given the military the power to arrest civilian protesters, yet still the anti-Morsi demonstrations continue. And while he quickly endorsed the demonstrations against Hosni Mubarak that ultimately led to the Muslim Brotherhood’s ascent to power, Barack Obama has been reticent about supporting these demonstrations, as he was in 2009 when thousands of Iranians took to the streets to protest against the mullahcracy.

But aren’t these “pro-democracy” protesters? After all, Morsi has been notably inhospitable to dissent, arresting his critics and overseeing the adoption of a constitution that Egyptian Christians fear will be used to deny them basic rights, in accord with Sharia provisions institutionalizing discrimination against non-Muslims. Videos have come to light in which he lashed out against Jews with venomous hatred, referring to Qur’anic curses of them as “apes and pigs” and declaring that there could be no negotiations with Israel.

Those who are protesting against his regime, on the other hand, are in favor of genuine democratic rule, without Sharia restrictions on the freedom of speech and its denial of equality of rights to large segments of the popular.

Yet Obama is silent. The only two mass popular uprisings in Muslim countries that he has not supported have one thing in common: both have been against pro-Sharia Islamic supremacist regimes. All the popular uprisings he has supported, meanwhile, have resulted in the installation of pro-Sharia Islamic supremacist regimes.

One might be pardoned for thinking that Obama is in favor of pro-Sharia Islamic supremacist regimes. In any case, so are most Egyptians: a Pew Research Center survey conducted in Spring 2010, before the chimerical “Arab Spring” and the toppling of Mubarak, found that no fewer than eighty-five percent of Egyptians thought that Islam was a positive influence in politics. Fifty-nine percent said they identified with “Islamic fundamentalists” in their struggle against “groups who want to modernize the country,” who had the support of only twenty-seven percent of Egyptians. Only twenty percent were “very concerned” about “Islamic extremism” within Egypt.

Another survey in May 2012 found little difference. 61 percent of Egyptians stated that they wanted to see Egypt abandon its peace treaty with Israel, and the same number identified the hardline Islamic kingdom of Saudi Arabia as the country that should serve as Egypt’s model for the role Islam should play in government. 60 percent said that Egypt’s laws should hew closely to the directives of the Qur’an.

Yet these surveys show that a substantial minority in Egypt does not want Sharia, and the demonstrations this week demonstrate that they’re determined to make a stand. They oppose the new Egyptian constitution that, as the Associated Press reported, “largely reflects the conservative vision of the Islamists, with articles that rights activists, liberals and Christians fear will lead to restrictions on the rights of women and minorities and civil liberties in general.” They have every reason to be concerned, for the constitution reflects in numerous particulars Sharia restrictions on their rights. AP noted that the constitution’s wording “could give Islamists the tool for insisting on stricter implementation of rulings of Shariah.”

Also, “the draft contains no article specifically establishing equality between men and women because of disputes over the phrasing. However, it maintains that a woman must balance her duties toward family and outside work, suggesting that she can be held accountable if her public role conflicts with her family duties. No such article is mentioned for men.”

The implications for women’s rights are as obvious as they are unsurprising in light of Sharia’s reduction of women to the status of little more than commodities, slaves of the men who own them.

There is more.

This will seem by some to be a harsh and unfair indictment of President Obama. Truth be known, Obama subscribes to the Qur'anic observation or injunction that the Jews are the sons of apes and pigs. Obama can tolerate (what I call) Jewish traitors, but not proud Jews. That is why Obama despises moderate prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Can you imagine how Obama would conduct himself were he dealing with someone to the right of Netanyahu?

It's nice to know what many ordinary Egyptian people think of Sharia. It's clear that they don't want it. I suspect that they have cottoned on to something that Obama and his like are either ignorant of or couldn't care less about, the simple facts. Sharia does no favours to Men or women, and especially women.
On this same subject, have you ever wondered what goes through the mind of Muslimas who defend Sharia? Why do these women support Islam? What do they get out of it, either in this life or the next?
Well one female would-be suicide bomber had this to say about it:

And I'm glad to see it. I believe that these resisters of Shari'ah are tragically outnumbered, but I salute them. *No one* should submit to the oppression and savagery of Shari'ah without a fight.

This is something I've really taken sharp note of, as well.

While Obama has appeared quick to praise—and even aid, as in Libya—those fighting *for* Shari'ah, he has been utterly silent about those fighting *against* it.

Now, it is true that many clueless Westerners at least initially praised the "Arab Spring", believing to be a genuine fight against tyranny.

But if Obama were of this well-meaning if clueless ilk, then surely he would have supported those standing against the oppression of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and against the Mullahs in Iran.

Now many here—myself among them—have noted that the "Green Revolution" in Iran was not quite the pro-democracy movement that we might have hoped. But even given that, it made sense for any supporter of freedom to at least cautiously endorse the protests.

And there is *no* reason to suppose that this is the reason Obama was silent while protesters there were imprisoned, tortured, and killed.

After all, he was more than happy to "reach out" to the Mullahs himself after he was first elected to the presidency.

Yes—and this is very, very troubling. It goes far beyond the standard cluelessness of many in the West, and strongly suggests deliberate support of Shari'ah states, and an opposition to any who resist that vile barbarism.

I'm really not getting what the 'Free People' of Egypt are. We saw that the overwhelming majority of them voted for the Muslim Brotherhood, and if elections were held again, the latter would win again.

Also, those who don't support the Muslim Brotherhood, who are they? They are Nasserites - Baathists w/o a sectarian pretext (unlike Syria and previously Iraq). It's not like if they came to power, Israel's Western borders would be secure, or that the new regime would cut off support to the PA and support Israel itself. That's something that almost all Egyptians - including the Copts - would oppose. Both in Egypt and abroad, the Copts have shown themselves to be virulently Judeophobic.

So no, just like we didn't support the democracy movements in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia or Syria, we shouldn't support this uprising either - it'll be no better as far as Western interests go. All it is is a turf war fighting for control on who runs things in Cairo.

And one thing Obama, on paper, would be right about - since the current regime came to power in a free & fair election, they should not be opposed on those grounds. The right reason to oppose the regime not only in Egypt, but also in Libya, Pakistan, Tunisia, Syria and elsewhere is that they are all pro-Jihad regimes out there to advance the cause of Islam. If the Obama administration does not recognize that, then don't bother supporting or opposing this regime on the 'democracy' pretext, since it won't be there in Egypt, no matter who comes to power. In fact, the best thing that the US can do, given the ignorance of everybody in DC about Islam, is to have no policy on that region, and simply not interfere. That will be less damaging than the policies of every president since Bush 41.
